Vintage Mid-Century El Dia de los Muertos Color Intaglio by Harry Brorby; Circa 1953. This striking original intaglio print on paper features a tight palette of black; white; green and gold. Geometric and abstract patterns fill the majority of the print; with four figures and a skeleton occupying the left side and lower portions of the work. Titled and numbered “3/35 in the lower left. Signed and dated “1953 in the lower right. A partially intact paper label on the reverse shows this work was sent from the University of Iowa; to the Brooklyn Museum for consideration in 1953 National Print Exhibition. Brorby received his BFA at Harvard University and later his MFA at the University of lowa; where he studied under Mauricio Lasansky. His works are in the permanent collection of the MoMA; Walker Art Center in Minneapolis; The Art Institute of Chicago; and The Detroit Institute of Art. Brorby's work was selected for the Annual Exhibition by Artists of Chicago and Vicinity at The Art Institute of Chicago eleven times between 1951 and 1971.
