The Best Holiday Party Shoes, From Crystal Pumps to Flats You Can Stand In

The best party shoes for the holidays are a satin or velvet pump on a 70 to 90mm heel for most invitations, a crystal-embellished pump or sandal when the dress is plain, and a kitten heel, a low slingback or a jeweled flat for any party where you will stand for three hours or more. Metallic sandals belong to warm rooms. Ankle straps, Mary Janes and platforms are for dancing and floor-length gowns. Choose the heel for the hours you will stand, not for the dress.

Below, this season's holiday party shoes by type, each with an edit to shop, then tights, long dresses, New Year's Eve, fit and care.

How to choose party shoes: heel height, hours on your feet and the floor

Party shoes fail for three reasons: the heel is too high for the hours you stand, the shoe slips off when you walk or dance, or the sole slides on a polished floor. After casual everyday dressing, parties, cocktails and birthdays are the occasion the most users ask Vêtir's AI stylist to dress them for, and among the body and fit conditions they set, comfort or walkability ("no heels", "flat shoes") comes first: 34 users in the 12 months to September 26. So start with the hours.

The heights below are our editors' working guide, not an industry standard. Houses give heel height in millimeters; 25.4mm make an inch, so 50mm is about 2 inches, 70mm about 2.75 and 100mm about 4.

Three details decide the rest. Pitch: a platform under the toe lowers the angle of your foot, so a 120mm heel on a 30mm platform sits at roughly the slope of a 90mm heel. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons says high heels put tremendous pressure on the ball of the foot, that a pointed toe adds more, and that a platform under the toe box decreases the overall stress. The heel tip: a stiletto puts your weight on one small point, so it sinks into lawns, catches in grates and skids on marble; a flared or block heel spreads it. The sole: new leather soles are slick on stone and parquet, so scuff them on a rough sidewalk first or have a cobbler fit a thin rubber sole protector.

The AAOS advises buying shoes toward the end of the day, because feet swell, and standing while your feet are measured. We would add one step: try them in the tights you plan to wear, because a sheer layer changes how a pump grips the heel. Most December calendars need two pairs: one you can stand in for the office and cocktail parties, and a statement pair for the night you will be seated or photographed. For the clothes, see our holiday party outfits and our guide to dressing for black-tie events.

Crystal and embellished heels

Crystal does for a shoe what diamond studs do for a face: it makes a plain dress festive without changing anything else. Where the crystals sit decides how loud the shoe is.

  • A buckle at the toe. The quietest way to wear crystal, and the one that works with tailoring. Manolo Blahnik's Hangisi, a satin pump with a crystal buckle, is the reference: buy the black 70mm first and the emerald 90mm second. Roger Vivier's Flower Strass sets crystal on ivory satin.
  • All-over crystal. The shoe becomes the jewelry. Loewe's Toy is encrusted in crystals of different sizes on a sculptural heel that flares at the base, and Christian Louboutin's Doria traces a diamond pattern in crystals across black suede. Keep everything else matte.
  • Crystal on mesh. Louboutin's Miss Z, Gianvito Rossi's Burma and Aquazzura's Dream Girl scatter crystals over sheer mesh. They read lighter, and over sheer black tights they look deliberate.

Crystals catch. A buckle on the inner side of the foot can ladder the other stocking when you cross your ankles, and all-over crystal can pull a tulle or chiffon hem, so check where the stones meet the fabric before the night.

  • Black column, black buckle. A black crepe column, black crystal-buckle satin pumps and diamond studs: the buckle does a necklace's job.
  • Emerald at the feet. Emerald crystal-buckle pumps with a black tuxedo suit and a white silk shirt.
  • Silver on burgundy. All-over silver crystal pumps with a burgundy velvet slip dress and nothing else that shines.

All-over crystal earns its price if you already know of three parties this season you will wear it to.

Jeweled and crystal sandals

A jeweled sandal is for a warm room and a dress that shows the foot: a gown with a slit, a slip midi, a short dress with bare legs. The straps are the decoration, so they also have to hold the shoe on. René Caovilla's snake-wrap sandal coils a crystal-studded strap up the ankle and its Eva wraps it in crystal flowers; both are held at the ankle, the strap that keeps a sandal on when you dance. Aquazzura's Memoire holds the heel with an elastic halter strap. Gianvito Rossi's black satin sandal swirls feathers at the toe, which suits a seated dinner more than a crowded bar.

Think twice about a thong sandal, like Magda Butrym's embellished satin pair, for a long standing party: the post between the toes takes the pressure as your foot slides forward.

  • One coil. Black snake-wrap sandals with a black satin slip dress slit to the knee.
  • Bordeaux and black. Bordeaux crystal-flower sandals with a black velvet column gown.

Satin pumps: the party shoe to buy first

If you buy one pair this season, make it a satin pump, which reads as evening in any room. Black is the pair to own; a strong color such as crimson, emerald or fuchsia does more with black, navy and gray clothes than a second black pair would. Satin is also the least forgiving material here: it shows water marks and scuffs and cannot be polished back, so a dark color is safer than ivory or pastel if you will walk outdoors.

The shapes differ more than the fabric. Manolo Blahnik's BB is the plainest, a pointed 90mm pump. Roger Vivier's Trompette squares the toe in emerald satin, Valentino Garavani's Annine trims fuchsia satin with leather, and Versace's Gianni, which revisits the house archives according to its listing, sets the Medusa on the heel. Gianvito Rossi cuts a raspberry crepe-satin pump as a d'Orsay with a slim ankle strap, and Louboutin's Cassia ties satin ribbons around the ankle like a ballet shoe. For more heights, browse all designer pumps.

  • Crimson with black. Crimson satin pumps with a black tuxedo jacket worn as a dress and sheer black tights.
  • Fuchsia at the office. Fuchsia satin pumps with a gray flannel trouser suit and a black silk shell.

Velvet party shoes

Velvet is a fabric of the season: Tagwalk's fall/winter 2026 womenswear trends list it alongside red, fur and animal prints. On a shoe, the pile soaks up light, so velvet looks rich rather than shiny, at a holiday lunch or at night. Deep colors suit it: purple, merlot, navy, black.

Let velvet shoes meet a smooth surface, such as silk, crepe, fine wool or sheer black tights. A velvet dress over velvet shoes in a different color looks heavy; the same color looks intentional. Velvet crushes where the toe flexes and marks when wet, so brush it in the direction of the pile and hold a steamer a few inches away to lift crushed areas. Gianvito Rossi's deep purple pump is the purest shape here; Amina Muaddi's burgundy Camelia slingback adds a jeweled brooch at the toe, and Alaïa's fuchsia square-toe pump has an ankle strap.

  • Purple and gray. Deep purple velvet pumps with a charcoal knit dress and sheer black tights.
  • Red and black. Black velvet slingbacks with a red satin midi skirt and a fine black cashmere sweater.

Metallic sandals in winter, and the tights question

After the black pump, a metallic sandal is the most useful party shoe, because silver and gold behave as neutrals: they go with black, navy, burgundy, emerald, ivory and every sequined dress. Match the metal to your jewelry and keep the shape minimal, two or three straps, so the sandal works with a gown as well as a mini.

Can you wear sandals with tights? For most December parties our stylists say no: with tights, wear a closed pump, and keep sandals for bare legs, as in our holiday party outfits guide and our edit of the best holiday dresses.

The one exception is a deliberate look, not a way to keep warm: sheer black tights under a minimal sandal. It works only when all four of these hold; if one is missing, wear the pump.

  1. The tights are sheer black with no reinforced toe, the kind sold as sandalfoot or toeless.
  2. The sandal is one strap across the toes and one at the ankle, not a cage.
  3. The sandal is silver, gold or black. Skip nude tights in an open toe: they almost always show a seam or a darker toe.
  4. The dress is short or midi and dark, so the black leg reads as part of the outfit.

For a sandal with bare legs, plan the route, car to door to a warm room, or wear boots outside and change at the door. Manolo Blahnik's Chaos is the minimal silver sandal with an ankle buckle; Saint Laurent's platinum Tribute puts a platform sole under a heel its listing gives as 75mm; Louboutin's silver Jane, on an 85mm block heel, is the steadiest; and Jimmy Choo's Heloise is the gold platform with knotted straps. The full range is in our heeled sandals.

Comfortable party heels: kitten heels and low slingbacks

The honest answer to "comfortable party heels" is a lower heel. A kitten heel, roughly 30 to 55mm, keeps the foot nearly level, and the AAOS calls a heel under 2 inches with a square or wide toe box an ideal choice. Most evening kitten heels are pointed, which adds forefoot pressure, so if your toes ache by midnight, choose an almond or square toe. Choose an evening material, satin, velvet, crystal, organza or metallic leather, so the low heel reads as a decision rather than a compromise.

Manolo Blahnik's Hangisli is the Hangisi as a 50mm slingback with a stretch strap, and the red velvet Bequila, a 30mm slingback, has a jeweled fringe across the toe. Gianvito Rossi's strass organza slingback is 55mm, and Roger Vivier's Très Vivier, a low-heeled patent Mary Jane with a crystal buckle, takes its cue from 1960s Mary Janes, according to its listing. A kitten heel in an evening material is formal enough for black tie with a gown hemmed for it, and it is the better office-party shoe, because you can wear it from 9 a.m.

  • Red velvet, black silk. Red velvet kitten slingbacks with a black silk shirtdress and sheer black tights.
  • Silver and navy. Silver strass kitten slingbacks with a navy sequined midi skirt and a navy cashmere sweater.

Slingbacks for the party season

The Victoria and Albert Museum dates Chanel's two-tone shoe to 1957, when the shoemaker Raymond Massaro designed a beige pump with a black toecap and heel for the house; the museum's own example, a cotton pair from 2015, is a slingback. Chanel's current version, from the Fall-Winter 2026 collection according to its listing, is black and white, in suede kidskin and patent calfskin.

A slingback gives you the polish of a closed toe with a lighter, open back, and its strap holds the foot better than a mule. The strap should sit just above the bony back of the heel and stay there on stairs. With tights it slides, because nylon gives leather little grip, so choose an elasticated strap, like the one on Saint Laurent's crystal-studded Folie, or a buckle you can tighten. A cobbler can shorten a loose strap. This edit leans to crystal, from Tom Ford's 105mm Thea to Dolce & Gabbana's 60mm lace pair; plainer pairs are among our designer slingbacks.

  • Crystal and tailoring. Black crystal slingbacks, black wide-leg trousers and a white silk shirt with the collar open.

Bow pumps and slingbacks

The bow came back to shoes in spring: Marie Claire named the "little bow pump" among spring 2026's biggest shoe trends, singling out Prada's white kitten heels and Dior's ballet-slipper peep-toe heels from the runways, and the bow has carried into this season's party shoes. Where the bow sits changes the shoe.

  • At the toe. Saint Laurent's Tea sets a satin bow over a pointed open toe, and Manolo Blahnik's Apidosa sets crystals into an ivory satin bow. A toe bow reads sweet, so balance it with sharp tailoring or a severe black dress.
  • At the back. Aquazzura's Bow Tie has a wired bow at the back of the heel that shows when you walk away. Wear it with a mini or a midi; a long hem hides it.
  • As the shoe itself. Givenchy's champagne mule is knotted from crinkled metallic leather, and Dior's Bow slingback, designed under Jonathan Anderson according to its listing, sits on a sole shaped like a D.

Wear one bow per outfit: if the shoe has it, the dress, the bag and the hair do not.

Shoes for long dresses and dancing: ankle straps, Mary Janes and platforms

With a long dress, the shoe and the hem are one decision. Hem a gown in the shoes you will wear longest that night, so it just clears the floor: a gown hemmed for 100mm heels drags at midnight in flats, and one hemmed for flats looks short in heels.

Under a floor-length hem, a platform is the comfortable choice. Only the toe shows, so its bulk disappears, and it gives height with less pitch than a stiletto. Gianvito Rossi's velvet platform pump in a deep Syrah red and Aquazzura's open-toe Cupid in black velvet both buckle at the ankle, and Fendi's After 9 puts a grosgrain bow on a black velvet platform.

For dancing, choose a strap across the instep or around the ankle, like the bowed one on Givenchy's black satin Naked sandal, which keeps the shoe on through a turn; save mules for seated evenings. Jimmy Choo's Marene is a 120mm platform Mary Jane with a crystal buckle, Manolo Blahnik's Campari the slim patent classic on 90mm, and Roger Vivier's Belle Vivier puts a jeweled strap on black velvet with a low heel. If ankle straps shorten your legs, choose a thin strap in the shoe's color, or a Mary Jane bar, which cuts the line less.

  • Velvet under satin. Burgundy velvet platform pumps under a black satin gown hemmed to clear the floor.
  • Sequins and a bar. Black velvet Mary Janes with a short black sequined dress and sheer black tights.

New Year's Eve shoes

New Year's Eve falls on a Thursday this year: the longest party of the season, and the likeliest to end outdoors at midnight. Plan three things: a heel you can still stand in after the countdown, 85mm or lower and only that high with a strap; flats in your bag or at the coat check; and boots for the street, with the party shoes in their dust bag.

Patent and metallic leather wipe clean, while satin and velvet mark if a glass tips over your foot, so silver or patent is the safer choice for a crowded countdown. If a spill reaches satin, blot it at once with a dry cloth and do not rub. Our New Year's Eve outfits guide has the rest of the look, and our edit of the best evening bags covers the clutch.

The elegant flat for standing all night

An evening flat is not the ballet flat you wear to the office. It needs an evening material, satin, velvet, crystal or organza, and usually a pointed toe; a plain round-toe leather ballerina looks like daywear at a party. Pointed satin flats, like Christian Louboutin's burgundy Erozeena with its ankle strap, go with a gown. Crystal-studded Mary Jane flats, like Alaïa's and Gianvito Rossi's strass organza pair, go with a short dress and tights. Velvet loafers, such as Saint Laurent's Le Loafer and Tom Ford's navy pair, are for hosting and dressy dinners in trousers.

A flat has no heel height to stop your foot sliding forward, so it must grip your heel at the back from the first try. Our guide to the best ballet flats covers everyday pairs, and you can browse all ballet flats here.

  • Burgundy under black. Burgundy satin pointed flats under a black column gown.
  • The host. Black velvet loafers with black velvet trousers and an ivory silk shirt.

Fit, comfort and care: getting through the night

Sizing. Read the fit note on the exact listing you buy from: retailers' notes differ even within one house. On the listings here, the retailer's note on Christian Louboutin's Miss Z pumps says they run half a size large, and the notes on Gianvito Rossi's Bijoux sandal and Manolo Blahnik's Hangisli suggest half a size up, but the note on Gianvito Rossi's crepe-satin d'Orsay says to try a full size smaller. Two retailers even disagree on the Hangisi: half a size larger for the black 70mm, true to size but narrow at the toe for the emerald 90mm. Satin, organza and mesh barely give, so the pair should fit on the first try.

  • Break them in. Wear new shoes at home for an hour, on a rug, in the tights you will wear.
  • Grips and cushions. A heel grip can rescue a pump you own that slips, but the AAOS advises against buying shoes that need pads to stay on. A ball-of-foot cushion takes up room, so try the shoe with it in place before you settle on a size.
  • Heel tips. Replace worn tips before the season; one worn to the metal pin skids and scratches floors. Roger Vivier's Flower Strass and Louboutin's Cassia come with spare tips, according to their listings.
  • Satin and velvet. Test a fabric protector inside the heel, then treat satin before the first wear.
  • Crystal. Check every stone before you wear the shoes and keep any that falls, so a cobbler can set it back. Store crystal pairs in their own dust bags, because the stones scratch satin and metallic leather.

What to buy once, and what to enjoy for a season

Buy once and keep: a black satin pump at 70 to 90mm, a crystal-buckle pump in black or ivory, a minimal sandal in the metal of your jewelry, and a pointed evening flat. Enjoy for a season or two: feathers at the toe, oversized or colored bows, colored crystal florals, platforms over 100mm and sculptural novelty heels. To build a full look around a pair you own or have saved, ask our AI stylist with the dress, the venue and how long you will be standing.

How we chose

We sorted these 80 pairs by type and by the hours each can stand, because a party shoe is judged at 11 p.m., not in the fitting room. Heel heights, straps, soles and fit notes come from each pair's listing; color comes from the photographs, not the retailer's color name. That mattered: we left out an ivory pump listed as black, a black pump listed as cream and a bronze sandal listed as silver. Every pair of these designer evening shoes is new, from a top luxury house, and was listed in at least seven sizes when we checked on October 19. Prices run from under $1,000 for a plain satin pump or a velvet slip-on to just over $3,000 for all-over crystal.

Frequently asked questions

What shoes should I wear to a holiday party?

For most invitations, a satin or velvet pump on a 70 to 90mm heel, in black or a jewel tone. Add crystal for a plain dress, a kitten heel or evening flat for a long standing party, and an ankle strap or platform for dancing.

What heel height is comfortable for a party?

For a standing party of three hours or more, a kitten heel or a low pump of 30 to 75mm, about 1.25 to 3 inches. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons calls a heel under 2 inches with a wide toe box an ideal choice, and a platform under the toe makes a higher heel easier.

Can you wear sandals with tights?

Usually not: with tights, our stylists wear a closed pump and keep sandals for bare legs. The exception is a deliberate look, sheer black toeless tights with a minimal black, silver or gold sandal and a short or midi dark dress. Skip nude tights with open toes.

What shoes go with a long dress or gown?

A platform pump or sandal, which hides under the hem and adds height with less pitch, or a strappy sandal if the gown has a slit. Hem the gown in the shoes you will wear longest.

Are kitten heels formal enough for black tie?

Yes, in satin, velvet, crystal or metallic leather, with a gown hemmed for a low heel. A kitten heel in plain daytime leather looks underdressed.

What color shoes go with a black party dress?

Black satin or velvet is the classic, and silver, gold, crystal, red, burgundy, emerald and deep purple all lift it. Match metallics to your jewelry and keep to one statement: if the shoe sparkles, the bag can be plain.
