The Best Winter Boots for Women, From Shearling-Lined Ankle Boots to Real Snow Boots

The best winter boots for women are chosen by the winter you live in. If your city hovers around freezing, with slush and salt on the sidewalk, buy a smooth leather boot on a rubber lug sole first, then a shearling-lined ankle boot for dry, bitter days. If you get real snow, add a lined lace-up snow boot whose shaft rises above the snow. For sleet and rain-to-snow weeks, wear a rubber boot with a wool sock inside. Start with Prada, Fendi and Burberry for lug-soled leather; Totême, Miu Miu and The Row for shearling linings; Isabel Marant and Bottega Veneta for snow; Loewe and Moncler for rubber; and Gabriela Hearst and Brunello Cucinelli for the warmest pairs.
Below: a climate table, ten edits by job, and the practical part: warmth, grip on ice, what "waterproof" means on a listing, salt care and fit. For October and November styles, see our guide to the best fall boots.
Best winter boots for women: which pair for which winter
Four questions decide the boot: how cold, how wet, how far you walk, and whether the sidewalks are cleared. Most women in a four-season city need two winter pairs, one for dry cold and one for wet cold, rather than one heroic boot.
| Your winter | Buy first | Then add | What to read on the listing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wet city cold: slush, sleet and salt around freezing | Smooth leather on a rubber lug sole | A rubber boot for the worst days | Rubber sole, smooth or waxed leather, a closed lower |
| Dry city cold: cleared sidewalks, well below freezing | A shearling-lined ankle boot | A warm knee-high for skirts | "Lining: shearling" and a shearling insole |
| Real snow: unplowed paths, mountain towns | A lined lace-up snow boot | A shearling après boot for evenings | Shaft height, laces or a drawstring collar, deep lugs |
| Car to door: dinners, parties, the office | A heeled boot on a lug sole | Knit-cuffed or fold-down boots for dry nights | A block heel or wedge, rubber under the forefoot |
| A ski week | A snow boot for town and après | A rubber or lug boot for travel days | Grip first, then warmth |
Warm boots for women: what actually keeps your feet warm
Warmth in a boot is still air held close to the foot, and the lining is where that air lives. The Leather Working Group's glossary of leather terms defines shearling as the tanned skin of a sheep still bearing its original wool, cut to an even length: a dense pile that holds air against the foot. Wool also copes with sweat, which matters in a boot worn from a cold street into a heated subway. The Woolmark Company's fact sheet on breathability says the fiber's crimp traps pockets of still air and that wool can absorb up to 35% of its weight before it feels wet and clings to the skin. It is the wool industry's own figure, but the lesson holds: wool socks, never cotton.
Two details separate a warm boot from one that only looks warm:
- The insole. On a cold pavement, heat leaves through the bottom of the foot. A "shearling insole" or "fur footbed", which several Totême, Miu Miu and Isabel Marant pairs here list, is warmer underfoot than leather, and a thicker rubber sole adds distance from the ground.
- The materials list, not the name. We found one boot sold as shearling-lined whose own listing gave its lining as fabric.
Shearling-lined ankle boots for cold, dry city days
The lined ankle boot is the pair to live in from December to March: warm enough for a long walk on a bitter day, slim enough to disappear under trousers. Almost everything here pairs a shearling lining with a rubber sole. The exception is Magda Butrym's almond-toed suede boot, lined in shearling on a leather sole, which belongs on cleared, dry sidewalks. Totême's pointed-toe boot zips at the back and adds a shearling insole. The Row's Stella, smooth lamb leather on a rubber sole, is the quietest under tailoring. Manolo Blahnik's Mircus laces a lined suede boot onto a lugged rubber sole, and Gianvito Rossi sets black shearling-lined suede on a thick rubber platform. If the boot also goes to the office, choose smooth black leather; keep pale suede and pale shearling cuffs for dry weeks, because slush darkens both.
- Black lined leather ankle boots, black wool trousers long enough to cover the shaft, a gray cashmere turtleneck and a long charcoal coat.
- Chocolate suede lined boots, wide ecru jeans, a cream cable knit and an olive quilted jacket.
- Sand suede booties, gray flannel trousers cropped just above the collar, an ivory roll-neck. Show the shearling edge on purpose or hide it completely; half-covered looks accidental.

Shearling lace-ups: the warm boot that closes properly
A pull-on boot leaves a gap at the collar; a lace-up lets you close it against wind and against snow when you step off the path. Laces also let you loosen the boot for a thicker sock on the coldest days. If you wear gloves, look for speed hooks or eyelet hooks at the top.
Prada's lace-up booties are the most complete: shearling lining, metal eyelet hooks, a 50mm rubber lug sole on a leather welt and, per the listing, a removable shearling-covered insole you can dry separately. Brunello Cucinelli's Monili boot pairs laces with a side zip, so you tie it once and zip it on each morning; the house's beaded version adds cashmere laces and a shearling tongue. Miu Miu's suede lace-up has a shearling lining and insole on rubber, and Aquazzura's Very Cortina is the sleekest, in smooth leather with speed lacing, a shearling collar and a lug sole.
- Stone shearling lace-ups, slim cream trousers tucked in, a gray Fair Isle sweater and an ivory down jacket.
- Black laced boots, black leggings, a long gray cardigan and a black parka.

Luxury snow boots for women, for real snow
A snow boot earns its place only where nobody clears the snow: a mountain town, a country lane, the path to the car. It has three jobs, and the listing tells you whether it does them.
- A shaft taller than the snow. Snow over the collar melts into your sock. Miu Miu's lace-up suede winter boot gives a 7-inch shaft and Bottega Veneta's padded Puddle Bomber a 9-inch one, per their listings; an ankle-height après boot is for packed paths.
- A collar that closes. The Puddle Bomber has a drawstring collar and wrap-around laces; Isabel Marant's Nowles, Moncler's Vera Sheal and Brunello Cucinelli's shearling-lined boot lace up.
- A thick rubber sole, which keeps the foot out of slush and adds insulation. Moncler's Vera Sheal is built like a duck boot, a molded rubber lower under a nylon upper (its listing gives nylon and rubber), with a fleece-and-leather interior. Gianvito Rossi's Stormy lines suede in shearling on a rubber lug.
Isabel Marant's Nowles takes its proportions from traditional après-ski boots: a lace-up on a hidden wedge that the house sells as a shearling-lined snow boot, with a rubber outsole on the Nowles listings in this guide. Balenciaga's Alaska High is the deliberately exaggerated one, split calfskin with an extra-round toe on a thick rubber sole. Snow boots overheat in a restaurant, so change at the door if you will sit inside for hours. For the slopes, see what to wear skiing; for the hours after the lifts close, our après-ski outfits guide.
- Camel lace-up snow boots, cream knit leggings, an ivory fisherman sweater and a long chocolate shearling coat.
- Black padded snow boots, black ski pants worn over the shaft, a white turtleneck and a black down parka.

Waterproof winter boots: what the word means on a listing
Most leather boots, however good, are water-resistant rather than waterproof. Tricker's, the Northampton bootmaker, says in its guide to whether its boots are waterproof that they are highly water resistant but not fully waterproof, and that water-resistant means a shoe keeps your feet dry in normal wet conditions. Standing slush at a crosswalk is not a normal wet condition. A boot is waterproof when its lower is a continuous barrier, such as molded rubber or PVC, or when a waterproof membrane is sealed inside the upper; few fashion boots have a membrane, so look for one named on the listing. Moncler describes its Kickstream High, in PVC and neoprene, as "waterproof by construction".
The trade is warmth. Rubber keeps water out but does little to keep heat in: the translucent Loewe Storm here gives its lining as rubber, and Burberry's Marsh high boot is listed as unlined. On a freezing, slushy day a rubber boot needs a thick wool sock, so try it on with one; rubber does not stretch, and a pair that pinches in the shop will pinch in February. A knee-high shaft, like Loewe's Storm, from the house's fall 2026 runway according to its listing, handles deep slush and splashing traffic, with slim trousers tucked inside. An ankle-height pair, like Bottega Veneta's matte-rubber Puddle, is easier in town under a cropped wide trouser.
- Espresso rubber knee boots, slim gray flannel trousers tucked in, a cream crewneck and an olive waxed jacket.
- Clear rubber boots over black opaque tights, a black knit dress and a hooded black trench.
Rubber boots for slush, sleet and rain-to-snow days
Grip on snow and ice: what a sole can and cannot do
Snow and ice are different problems. Deep rubber lugs bite into snow and shed it as you walk; wet ice near freezing, slick with meltwater, is the hardest surface of all for a sole. Independent ice testing comes from KITE, one of the principal research enterprises at Toronto's University Health Network. In its WinterLab, people walk uphill and downhill on cold ice and wet ice while the slope of the floor is raised step by step, and the angle just before they begin to slip becomes the boot's score. As KITE's Rate My Treads explains its method, a boot passes at 7 degrees, chosen because that meets Ontario's accessibility guidelines for a curb ramp; 11 degrees earns two snowflakes and 15 or more earns three. In its December 2025 results, only one women's casual style scored high for traction, at 11 degrees.
Fashion listings do not publish ice-traction results, so read every lug sole in this guide as a snow-and-slush sole and plan for ice separately:
- Choose rubber over leather underfoot. Tricker's notes that rubber soles give grip, and a degree of protection against wet ground, that a leather sole does not.
- Look for wide, widely spaced lugs and a broad base. A tall, narrow heel is the hardest thing to stand on when the ground moves.
- Keep slip-on traction cleats in your bag for black-ice mornings; they stretch over a city boot and come off at the door.
- Walk differently: shorter steps, feet flat.
The city winter boot: smooth leather on a rubber lug
If you buy one winter boot for a salted city, make it smooth or grained leather on a rubber lug sole. Tricker's says a wax polish gives smooth leather the most protection, topped up through the wetter months; salt then sits on the surface where a damp cloth can reach it, instead of working into a nap. Grained and tumbled leathers, like Fendi's and Chloé's, also hide the scrapes of a winter of curbs and snowbanks.
Burberry's Chelsea sets black leather, with check-woven elastic sides, on a chunky lug sole, and Moncler's Vera Edge puts smooth leather on a lugged outsole. Fendi's buckled Commando boot is tumbled leather on a rubber lug. Prada's logo Chelsea sets glossy calf leather on a lugged rubber platform, and the Monolith zips at the side over the house's deep-cleated sole. Valentino Garavani's VLogo combat boot and Roger Vivier's Viv' Rangers add side zips to their laces, and Chloé's Dakota puts grained calfskin and Paddington buckles on a rubber base.
- Black lug-sole Chelsea boots, charcoal straight trousers that break on the vamp, a navy crewneck and a black wool coat.
- Dark brown leather Chelsea boots, ecru jeans, a burgundy knit and a cream coat.
- Black combat boots, a gray wool midi skirt, black opaque tights and a long gray coat. For coats that work over all three, see our guide to the best winter coats.

Warm knee-high boots
A tall boot with a skirt is a winter outfit only if the boot does some of the warming. There are three ways. Shearling all the way up: Gabriela Hearst's Waite is cut from recycled lambskin shearling, worn fleece side out, on a low western heel, and it is the most conspicuous boot in this guide. A lining: Magda Butrym's pointed suede knee boot is lined in shearling on a leather sole, so it is the car-to-door pair, while Fendi's Commando lines antiqued leather in white shearling, with buckles at ankle and calf, on a rubber lug you can walk on. Or a lug or rubber sole under a plain shaft, worn with heavier tights: Miu Miu's on a 55mm stacked heel, Christian Louboutin's Dianouchette Lug, Chloé's suede Dakota on its rubber base, and Tod's Gomma, with adjustable straps at the cuff. Miu Miu's knee-high combat boot laces all the way up through metal D-ring eyelets and speed hooks, so it closes around the calf.
One fit point the size chart misses: a lining takes up room inside the shaft, so a lined knee boot that matches your calf on paper can feel snug over opaque tights. Buckles and laces let you adjust; on a fixed pull-on shaft, leave more room than you would in an unlined boot. For measuring, see our guide to the best knee-high boots.
- Mocha shearling knee boots, a cream knit dress and an ivory wool coat.
- Cognac suede knee boots, an olive corduroy skirt and a cream sweater.

Heeled winter boots that still grip
The season's dinners, from Thanksgiving on Thursday, November 26, through December to New Year's Eve, are mostly car to door, but the few yards of icy curb in between are where a heel goes wrong. Three rules: a block heel or wedge rather than a stiletto or cone; rubber under the forefoot, where your weight lands; and 50 to 60mm for daytime, with 100mm kept for nights with a driver.
Christian Louboutin's Dianouchette Lug puts a 100mm heel on a lugged sole in waxed calf, and his Elisawalk sets a 100mm block heel on rubber lugs with shearling trim. Prada's stretch-nappa Monolith booties sit on a 55mm monoblock rubber sole, and Tod's Gomma T60 is the office version, a polished Chelsea on a 60mm block heel. Isabel Marant's Cylia, per its listing, lines suede with sheep fur on a rubber-soled wedge, steadier than a heel of the same height, and Gianvito Rossi's Yari lines suede in shearling on a 52mm chunky heel. Stella McCartney's cone-heeled boot with a folded faux-fur cuff is the party pair, for cleared ground only.
- Black 100mm lug boots, a black velvet slip dress, sheer black tights and a long black coat.
- Tan shearling-trimmed heeled boots, a cream ribbed knit dress and ivory tights.
- Black faux-fur-cuffed boots with a gray flannel trouser suit for a dinner that starts at the office.

Knit-cuffed and wool-trimmed boots
The coldest point in a winter outfit is often the inch between trouser hem and boot. A knit collar closes it. Fendi's Commando boot adds a mohair inner sock and ankle cuff to tumbled leather on a lug sole. Roger Vivier's Viv' Rangers Truck pairs a knitted shaft with suede on rubber, and Miu Miu turns a suede bootie into a sweater with a wool-blend knit cuff. Tod's sets nubuck under a knit collar and Max Mara trims a suede combat boot in cashmere. Brunello Cucinelli knits a moon boot in brushed cashmere, padded into ribbed tiers with suede at the heel and toe on a lugged sole, and trims a leather riding boot with wool, per its listing, for added warmth. These are dry-cold boots: knit and suede drink slush.
- Chocolate knit-cuffed booties, gray flannel trousers cropped so the knit shows, a cream crewneck.
- Black mohair-cuffed boots, black cigarette trousers cropped so the mohair shows, a white shirt under a gray crewneck.

Fold-down shearling and après-style ankle boots
These are the boots of mountain towns and cold weekends: short, soft and shearling-heavy. Totême's fold-down boot turns its shearling out as a deep cuff above a slim, square-toed foot; its listing gives a leather sole, so treat it as a dry-day pair. Totême's square-toed suede boot, lined in shearling on a rubber sole, handles wetter streets. Isabel Marant's Nolyz pairs a shearling interior with an exaggerated turn-over cuff, an adjustable leather belt and a rubber sole, and Burberry's suede ankle boot sets a plush shearling cuff on a lug sole. Gabriela Hearst's Tina, in mocha shearling with a 15mm wedge inside, is a bootie you could mistake for a slipper; its calf-leather sole makes it another dry-day pair.
- Black fold-down boots, black opaque tights and a gray knit dress that stops just above the cuff.

Designer winter boots under $1,000
In a winter boot, pay for the lining and the sole, not the hardware; several of the best-built pairs cost under $1,000. Isabel Marant's Nowles is the best value in warmth, with a lamb fur lining and footbed on a rubber sole. Totême's dark square-toed suede boot is lined in shearling and leather on rubber, and Aquazzura's Saint Honoré is a lambskin combat boot with elastic sides and a 45mm heel on rubber. Proenza Schouler's Bank is the plainest pair here, a leather Chelsea on a flexible molded rubber sole. For wet days, Moncler's black Kickstream High and Burberry's low Marsh boot cover slush, and Balenciaga's Alaska bootie, with a wool-blend insole, stands on a 65mm platform.

Salt, slush and drying: winter boot care by material
Road salt does its damage after you get home: the water evaporates, the salt stays in the leather, and the leather dries out around a pale tidemark.
- Smooth and grained leather. Wax before the first snow. Wipe salt off the same evening with a damp cloth, dry the boot at room temperature with trees or paper inside, then condition; Tricker's says to let wet shoes dry naturally, away from direct heat. For a mark that has already set, our guide to men's winter boots gives the vinegar-and-water method.
- Suede and nubuck. Tricker's says any suede benefits from a protector spray and should still be kept out of heavy, prolonged rain. Let wet suede dry fully before brushing the nap back up, and never rub wet salt into it.
- Shearling linings. The inside gets damp from your own feet. Open the boot wide, stuff it with paper and let it dry overnight; a removable insole, like Prada's, dries separately. Heat mats the wool.
- Rubber. Rinse salt off with plain water and dry the inside.
- Soles and rotation. Alternate two pairs so each dries fully, replace heel tips early, and take lug soles to a cobbler before the tread is smooth.
How winter boots should fit
- Fit them with winter socks. A boot sized over a thin sock will be tight over wool, and a tight boot is a cold boot. Try boots in the afternoon, in the socks or tights you will wear in January.
- Toes free, heel held. You should be able to wiggle your toes while the heel stays put.
- Lined pull-ons should start snug. Shearling compresses under the foot, so a lined boot that feels full on day one usually feels right a month later; one that is loose on day one will slip.
- Check for half sizes. Some winter boots come only in whole European sizes, like the Isabel Marant snow boots here and Moncler's Kickstream High, 35 to 41. Between sizes, choose the larger and add a wool insole.
- Tall rubber boots have a fixed calf. Compare the listed circumference, like the 16.25 inches Burberry gives for its Marsh high boot, with your calf measured over the trousers you will tuck in.
What to buy once, what to enjoy for a season, and the mistakes to skip
Buy once: a smooth black leather boot on a rubber lug sole, the pair most worth resoling; a shearling-lined ankle boot in a dark neutral; and, if you live with snow, a lined lace-up snow boot.
Enjoy for a season: clear rubber, fur cuffs, pale shearling in a salted city and exaggerated après shapes. Buy them for pleasure, as long as they are not your only pair.
The mistakes we see most: pale suede as the only boot in a city that salts its sidewalks; leather soles on snow and stilettos on ice; drying boots on a radiator; and buying snow or rubber boots without the socks you will wear in them.
How we chose
We sorted this edit by weather, then style, and every pair earned its group on the evidence of its own listing: a stated shearling or fur lining for the lined boots, a rubber or lug sole for anything meant for salt, and a rubber or PVC lower before we called a boot waterproof. Where a lined boot has a leather sole, we say so. We checked each photograph against its listing, dropped boots whose listed lining contradicted their name, and avoided pairs down to one or two sizes. In 2025, questions to our AI stylist about winter, knitwear, boots and coats rose in October, and this guide is timed for that turn of the season. Everything is new, from 25 houses on our luxury list, at prices from about $650 to just under $3,000.
Frequently asked questions
What are the warmest winter boots for women?
Boots that are shearling all the way through, or lined in shearling with a shearling insole and a thick rubber sole. A laced or drawstring collar keeps the warmth in; a wool sock, with room to move your toes, does the rest.
Are shearling boots good for snow?
For cold, dry snow on a cleared path, yes, if the sole is rubber. In deep or wet snow, wear a lace-up snow boot with a closed collar and a shaft above the snow; slush soaks suede and darkens shearling.
Are shearling boots waterproof?
No. Suede and shearling are not waterproof, and even protected suede should be kept out of heavy rain. For slush and sleet, wear a rubber boot, or a duck-style boot with a rubber lower, with a wool sock inside.
What winter boots are best for icy sidewalks?
A flat or low, wide rubber sole with deep, widely spaced lugs, plus slip-on cleats for black ice. Testing at KITE in Toronto shows how few boots grip ice well: in its December 2025 results, only one women's casual style scored high for traction.
Should winter boots be a size bigger?
Not automatically. Try them with the socks you will wear in January. Lace-ups and rubber boots often need half a size more for thick socks; lined pull-on boots should start snug, because the lining compresses.
How do you get salt off winter boots?
Wipe smooth leather with a damp cloth the same evening, dry it at room temperature, then condition it. Let suede dry completely before brushing, rinse rubber with plain water, and never dry any of them on a radiator.
