The Best Statement Earrings for Party Season, and How to Wear Them

The best statement earrings for party season are crystal drops for evening, sculptural gold for anything with a high neck, and a pearl in an unexpected shape for the dinners in between. Wear one pair as the only jewelry above the waist: with a strapless dress, a halter or a turtleneck, leave the necklace at home. Size the earrings to your neckline and your hair rather than to the dress, and read the closure line in the listing before the price, because that line decides whether you are still wearing them at midnight.

Below: how to match earrings to necklines, hair and winter coats; nine edits of designer statement earrings, from crystal, gold and pearls to chandeliers, oversized hoops, clip-ons, color and 18-karat gold, priced from a few hundred dollars to five figures; then weight, comfort and fine versus fashion jewelry. The season runs from Thanksgiving on Thursday, November 26, through Hanukkah, which Hebcal dates from sundown on December 4 to nightfall on December 12, to Christmas and New Year's Eve.

How to wear statement earrings with every neckline

The neckline decides how much space the earring has to fill. A bare neck leaves a gap between the ear and the dress that a long earring closes; a high or busy neckline already fills it, so the earring sits higher and stays simpler. This is how our stylists match the two:

NecklineThe earringWhy
StraplessA chandelier or long drop ending above the collarboneThe bare stretch from ear to bodice needs one vertical line.
Off-the-shoulderThe widest pair you own: chandeliers, fringe, big hoopsThe neckline runs across the shoulders, so width at the ear answers it.
HalterLong, narrow drops or linear barsA slim drop runs parallel to the straps; a wide chandelier crowds them.
One-shoulderAn asymmetric pair, the bigger earring on the bare sideA deliberate imbalance at the ears matches the dress.
Turtleneck or mock neckA sculptural earring on the lobe, or a drop that ends above the collarA drop resting on knit is pushed forward each time you turn your head.
Square neckSquare-cut crystals or rectangular dropsStraight edges at the ear repeat the corners of the neckline.
V-neck or plungeA tapered, pointed drop of medium lengthThe point echoes the V; a round, wide earring argues with it.
Shirt collarA hoop or a short sculptural earringLong drops catch on the collar points.
Feathered, beaded or cowl necklineSomething small, or nothingThe neckline is the statement already.

Match the earring to your hair

Our stylists' rules of thumb:

  • Worn up: a chignon, low bun or sleek ponytail is where the longest, widest earrings pay off.
  • Long and loose: hair hides whatever hangs below the lobe, so put the width at the lobe: oversized hoops, sculptural gold, big clip-ons. A long drop works only if you tuck one side behind your ear.
  • A bob ending at the jaw: avoid an earring that stops exactly where your hair stops. Go clearly shorter or clearly longer, so the two edges do not compete.
  • Curls and textured hair: chain fringe and open hook wires tangle; solid shapes and smooth hoops sit cleanly.

Winter collars, scarves and the coat check

December adds a problem summer never does: the coat. Chain fringe catches on shearling collars, crystal prongs pull threads from cashmere scarves, and a funnel collar presses a long drop into your neck for the whole walk. Put long or fringed earrings on after the coat comes off, from a small pouch in your clutch. Clip-ons are the quickest pair to put on at a cloakroom mirror.

The mistakes we see most

  • Two statements at the face: big earrings with a big necklace, or crystal earrings with a sequined neckline. Choose one.
  • Buying by the photograph: product shots have no scale. Check the length in the listing against your own jaw and collarbone.

Crystal earrings for a holiday party

Crystal is the most festive choice and the easiest to get wrong. In designer fashion jewelry it means cut glass or crystal in a base-metal setting, not a gemstone in silver or gold; where the listings below name the metal, it is brass or "silver-tone metal." What you pay for is the cut, the setting and the scale, so judge those.

Choose the setting's metal before the stone. Silver-tone settings, like Alexander McQueen's Cocktail drops, Givenchy's three stacked squares outlined in black, and Magda Butrym's crystal bow on a long line, suit black, ivory, silver, gray and icy blue. Gold-tone settings, like Oscar de la Renta's square-cut rhinestones, which graduate down to about two and a half inches according to Bergdorf Goodman, suit red, emerald, champagne and black.

Give the room one light source. With a sequined or lamé dress, crystal at the ears competes, and sculptural gold or a pearl reads better; with velvet, crepe, satin or wool, crystal does the work the fabric does not. Amina Muaddi's Begum Mini earrings repeat the crystals of the Begum pumps, inspired by an Art Deco sunburst mirror, and close with bell backs, according to Net-a-Porter.

  • Black velvet, hair up: a black velvet column and McQueen's crystal drops, with no necklace or bracelet.
  • Black and ivory: an ivory silk shirt, black satin trousers and Givenchy's stacked squares, which pick up both colors.
  • Red, square neck: a red crepe midi with Oscar de la Renta's square-cut drops.

Gold statement earrings: volume instead of sparkle

Gold statement earrings answer the occasions crystal is wrong for: the sequined dress, the turtleneck, the winter-white knit, the dinner that starts at six. They get their impact from shape and polish, so they catch candlelight without glittering.

Decide between volume and length. Bottega Veneta's Drop, about one inch wide and two high in 18-karat gold-plated silver according to FWRD, and Loewe's Inflated Balloon, in gold- and silver-tone metal, give size without swing, which is what a turtleneck or long loose hair needs. Tom Ford's Aion bars give length without width, for halters and strapless dresses. ALAÏA's Torn Heart earrings are flat, folded hearts polished to a high shine; Miu Miu's oversized gold sprays of beaded wire and Chloé's Bloomcraft, two tulip heads with ribbon spirals in gold and silver brass, bring more decoration. Saint Laurent's crumpled gold frame around amber-colored resin is a clip-on, about two inches by three, according to FWRD.

On mixing metals, let the earring agree with the hardware on your bag or shoes, or choose a two-tone piece like Loewe's that agrees with both.

  • The turtleneck look: a black cashmere turtleneck, a black satin midi skirt and Bottega Veneta's Drop earrings.
  • Winter white: an ivory knit dress, ALAÏA's torn hearts and gold sandals.
  • Sequins, handled: a champagne sequined dress with Loewe's Inflated Balloon earrings, all shape and no sparkle.

Pearl statement earrings, done modern

A modern pearl statement earring breaks one old rule: the pearl is irregular, oversized or colored, it hangs from something sculptural, or it meets a dark stone. Sophie Buhai's Angelyne earrings put a pearl on the post and a tapered onyx drop behind the lobe, according to Net-a-Porter, so a slim black line falls below the pearl. Each of Bottega Veneta's earrings is a single pink baroque pearl on a silver-tone spike, and Valentino Garavani hangs a baroque glass pearl from a crystal-paved bow.

Read the description, because "pearl" alone does not tell you what you are buying. The Federal Trade Commission's Jewelry Guides (16 CFR Part 23) say a cultured pearl should carry "cultured" or "cultivated" immediately before the word, and an imitation "imitation," "simulated" or "artificial." Designer listings tend to say "faux pearl," "pearly" or "glass pearl" for imitations. Magda Butrym's floral earrings use freshwater cultured pearls on gold-tone brass, according to FWRD. Gabriela Hearst's baroque freshwater pearls close with what the house calls an 18-karat yellow gold clip fastening; its photographs show a post behind the clip, so they need pierced ears.

Pearls also need gentler handling. The Gemological Institute of America lists hair spray, perfume, cosmetics and even perspiration among the chemicals that damage them, recommends wiping cultured pearls with a very soft, clean cloth after each wearing, and warns never to use an ultrasonic or steam cleaner. Our stylists read that list as an order of dressing: the pearls go on after the hairspray and perfume.

  • Black on black: a black velvet blazer over a black silk camisole, with Sophie Buhai's onyx-and-pearl Angelyne earrings.
  • Pink and pale: a pale pink satin slip dress and Bottega Veneta's pink baroque pearls, nothing else.
  • Navy and gold: a navy crepe dress with a high neck and Valentino Garavani's pearl-drop bows.

Chandelier earrings, fringe and tassels: the ones that move

Earrings that move catch the light every time you speak or turn, which is why fringe and chandeliers outshine a still stone on a dance floor. They are also the longest pieces here, so measure first: hold a ruler from your earlobe toward your collarbone, head level, and compare it with the listing. Zimmermann's Mira chandeliers are about five inches long according to Revolve, Balmain gives its brass tassels a total height of 13 centimeters, Dries Van Noten's Handmade Long earrings run about six inches according to FWRD, and Oscar de la Renta's Beaded Double Curtain earrings about three and a half inches, according to Bergdorf Goodman. Anything that reaches the collarbone wants a strapless, off-the-shoulder or halter neckline and hair worn up.

The most theatrical pair is Valentino's Kabarett: crystal-covered ovals with tassels of crystals and Swarovski pearls, 12 centimeters long on clip closures, according to Saks Fifth Avenue. Sophie Buhai's Triplet Flamenco earrings, onyx beads cascading into tassels, handmade in Los Angeles in sterling silver according to Net-a-Porter, give the same swing in black.

  • Strapless and silver: a strapless black gown, a high chignon and Valentino's Kabarett.
  • Gold leaves on ivory: an ivory satin slip dress under a long black coat, with Zimmermann's Mira chandeliers put on at the coat check.
  • Halter and chain: a black halter jumpsuit with Saint Laurent's chain tassels hung from the YSL logo.

Oversized hoops for party season

Oversized hoops are the statement earring for long, loose hair and shirt collars, because they sit forward at the lobe instead of hanging into either. Judge them by diameter and construction. Isabel Marant's Large Hoops measure about two inches across, Rabanne's XL Link hoops about one and a half inches long, and Khaite's tubular Santa Fe hoops, in palladium-plated brass, about one and a half inches long with a latch back, according to their listings.

Shape sets the formality. ALAÏA's segmented Coil hoops and ribbed Loop hoops are evening pieces in their own right; Loewe's padded, two-tone Inflated hoops sit between day and night; Sophie Buhai's Large Wave hoops in sterling silver are the plainest, and the ones you will wear most in January.

  • The tuxedo shirt: a white tuxedo shirt, black satin trousers and ALAÏA's Coil hoops.
  • Gray and silver: a gray cashmere knit dress, black knee boots and Khaite's antique-silver Santa Fe hoops.

Clip-on statement earrings, for unpierced ears and long nights

Clip-ons are not only for unpierced ears. A clip carries the weight on the flat of the lobe rather than through the piercing, which is why our stylists reach for a clip when a piece is big. Dolce & Gabbana's pear-shaped crystal drops and Saint Laurent's hammered gold earrings set with a black cabochon are both statement-sized and both clip on. So do ALAÏA's twisted Torsion earrings, Tom Ford's Liza, Carolina Herrera's gold calla lilies and Oscar de la Renta's cascade of pink crystal hearts, about two and three-quarter inches long according to Bergdorf Goodman.

Our stylists fit them this way. Set the clip on the fleshy center of the lobe, not its edge, where it pinches. Wear a new pair at home for twenty minutes; if it hurts by then, it will hurt more by dessert. Unclip one side for a phone call, and give your ears a minute off between courses.

  • Black tie without piercings: a black satin gown with Dolce & Gabbana's crystal pear drops.
  • Calla lilies: a white silk shirt, a black velvet skirt and Carolina Herrera's floral clip-ons.

Colored statement earrings: red, green and deep blue

Color at the ear is the quickest festive touch, and it works best against a quiet outfit: black, ivory, gray or a single dark jewel tone. Repeat the color once, in a lipstick, a shoe or a bag, or not at all; three repeats turn an accent into a theme. Saint Laurent's Cassandre Cherry earrings, an asymmetric clip-on pair of resin cherries and a single YSL charm according to Moda Operandi, are the playful red. Khaite's Keefe drops, pebbles of translucent burgundy resin under silver-tone caps, and Sophie Buhai's carnelian Flamenco earrings are the serious ones. For green, Bottega Veneta cuts its signature drop from Verde Alpi marble in 18-karat gold-finish sterling silver, according to Bergdorf Goodman. For blue, ALAÏA's fringed hoops come in a deep shade the house calls Orage.

  • Red with black velvet: a black velvet minidress, sheer black tights, Khaite's burgundy resin drops and a deep red lip.
  • Green with gray: gray flannel trousers and an ivory cashmere sweater with Bottega Veneta's green marble drops.
  • Blue against black: all black, hair up, and ALAÏA's blue fringed hoops.

Fine jewelry or fashion jewelry: what the price buys

Almost every statement earring from a fashion house is fashion jewelry: brass, plated or colored, set with glass, resin or imitation pearls. Price will not tell you which you are holding, since an elaborate crystal piece from a couture house can cost more than a small pair in solid gold. The material line will. These are the terms worth knowing, as the FTC's Jewelry Guides set them out:

  • Gold electroplate: gold of at least 10 karats, at least 0.175 microns thick throughout; "heavy gold electroplate" means at least 2.5 microns (16 CFR 23.3).
  • Vermeil: sterling silver coated with gold of at least 10 karats, at least 2.5 microns thick (23.4).
  • Sterling silver: at least 925 parts per thousand pure silver (23.5).

Two phrases in listings need decoding. "24-karat gold-plated brass," used in several Oscar de la Renta listings, gives the purity of the gold layer, not its thickness. "Gold-tone" names a color, not a metal; look for the base metal, usually brass.

Spend where you will wear it. Buy in fine jewelry the shapes you will wear every week for years: a tapered 18-karat drop like Gabriela Hearst's, Pomellato's Nudo with a cushion-shaped sky blue topaz on a lever back, or Jennifer Meyer's hammered gold discs, which the brand's own listing calls ultra-lightweight. Buy in fashion jewelry the one-season pleasures: fringe in a strong color, a novelty motif, a trend shape. Plating is only a surface layer, so our stylists keep plated pieces dry, put them on after perfume and store each pair in its own pouch.

If costume jewelry irritates your ears, nickel may be why. The American Academy of Dermatology names earrings and earring backs among the biggest culprits and advises wearing only jewelry that is nickel-free, hypoallergenic, or made from metals such as surgical-grade stainless steel, 18-, 22- or 24-karat yellow gold, pure sterling silver or platinum. None of the brass listings in this guide says whether it is nickel-free, so sensitive ears are better served by the yellow-gold pairs in the fine edit or by sterling silver such as Sophie Buhai's Large Wave hoops.

The fine edit is built for evening: Bulgari's Serpenti Viper drops in 18-karat yellow gold with 0.53 carats of pavé diamonds, Boucheron's Serpent Bohème links on omega backs, and David Yurman's Wisteria drops, 88.7 millimeters long with 2.50 carats of pavé diamonds according to Saks. For diamond studs and smaller hoops to give, see our fine jewelry gift guide; for what holds its value, our guide to investing in jewelry.

Weight, comfort and the backs that keep them on

In our stylists' experience, weight follows material more than size: cast brass and glass feel heavy for their size, while resin, acrylic and hollow forms feel light, so a large resin drop can sit more comfortably than a smaller crystal one. Listings rarely give grams, so read the material line, and treat solid metal cast in a big shape as heavy. It matters over time: the Cleveland Clinic says earlobes may grow larger if you wear heavy earrings, and tells patients not to wear heavy earrings after an earlobe repair, to prevent reinjury.

The closure decides how the weight sits. How each back works, and where our stylists use it:

ClosureHow it holdsBest for
Butterfly or push backA friction clutch on the postLight to medium pieces; add a wide disc back behind a heavy drop
Bell backA bell-shaped push-back that covers the end of the postMedium crystal pieces, such as Amina Muaddi's
Lever backA hinged arm closes against the wireDrops you dance in, such as Pomellato's Nudo
Omega backA post plus a hinged loop that clamps behind the lobeHeavier fine pieces, such as Boucheron's
Latch backA hinged post clicks into the hoopHoops, such as Khaite's Santa Fe
Hook ear wireAn open hook through the piercingLight pieces; add a rubber stopper for a long night
ClipSpring pressure on the lobeBig pieces and unpierced ears

Rehearse at home with the dress, hair and coat for an hour, and give your lobes a night off between parties.

Statement earrings under $500

At this price, one strong shape looks more expensive than a crowd of small stones. Jacquemus's Les Pendants Rond set a silver dome in a gold frame, about two inches long according to FWRD; Saint Laurent's Cassandre drop hangs a green resin stone from the house logo; Versace's Medusa hoops carry the Medusa head in a halo of crystals. Oscar de la Renta's door-knocker earrings, paved in pink crystal on clip-on backs, and Ferragamo's Gancini drops with faux pearls are the dressiest, and Carolina Herrera's cascade of gold petals set with crystals is the pair for a strapless dress.

How we chose these earrings

We started from the ear rather than the price. We read every listing for material, closure and length, and between two similar pairs kept the one whose listing gives a length, because an earring that ends two inches lower than you expected suits a different dress. We checked the first photograph of every pair for color and scale and spread the picks across 36 houses, from fashion houses' costume jewelry to fine jewelers working in 18-karat gold. Nothing is pre-owned, and nothing is sold as a single earring.

Frequently asked questions

What earrings go with a high neckline?

An earring that sits on the lobe or ends above the collar: sculptural gold, a large button, a short drop or a clip-on. With a turtleneck, a long drop rests on the fabric and swings outward, and crystal edges can snag fine knits.

Should you wear a necklace with statement earrings?

Usually not. With strapless, halter, one-shoulder and high necklines, our stylists let the earrings be the only jewelry above the waist. A fine chain can join mid-sized earrings with a V-neck, but two big pieces at the face compete.

How do I stop heavy earrings from drooping?

Put a wide disc back behind the post so the earring sits flat against the lobe, or choose a lever, omega or clip closure. If it still tips forward, the piece is too heavy for your piercing: switch to a clip-on or a lighter material such as resin.

Are clip-on earrings comfortable for a whole party?

In our stylists' experience, good ones are, for a few hours, if the clip sits on the fleshy center of the lobe; test a new pair at home first.

Gold or silver earrings with a black dress?

Both work. Gold warms black and suits candlelight and red or green accents; silver and crystal look sharper with black, white and icy colors.

Are gold-plated statement earrings worth the money?

For party pieces you wear a few times a season, yes. Under the FTC's guides, "gold electroplate" can be as thin as 0.175 microns, a surface layer over another metal. For a shape you will wear weekly for years, buy solid 18-karat gold or sterling silver.
