The Best Men's Puffer Jackets, From the Moncler Maya to Down Coats That Cover a Suit

The best men's puffer jackets for a city winter are a short down jacket in a matte nylon or wool shell, cut to zip over a sweater, and a longer down coat for men who wear tailoring or wait outside for long stretches. If you buy one this year, make it a hooded short jacket in a matte shell, filled with 90 percent down, in black, navy, charcoal or olive. Moncler's Maya is the shape the others are measured against. A down vest covers October, and a packable jacket covers travel.
Below: what fill power, fill weight and quilting tell you, how a puffer should fit and how to wear one with a suit, then 64 puffers, from short jackets to long coats, vests and knit hybrids, by Moncler, Prada, Brunello Cucinelli, Zegna and eleven other houses. Ski jackets are in our men's ski outfits guide; everything here is built for the street.
How to choose the best men's puffer jackets: what makes one warm
Four things decide how warm a down jacket is; listings print only some of them.
- Fill power. The International Down and Feather Bureau calls it "the measure of the loft," the space a set weight of down fills, and says "the higher the fill power number, the greater the insulating capability." Compare numbers with care. The testing laboratory IDFL lists eight test methods, from the old US cylinder in cubic inches per ounce to Europe's EN 12130 in millimeters per 20 grams, and notes that converting between them "does NOT take into account the conditioning method," how the down is prepared before it is measured. Not one listing behind our picks prints a fill power.
- The down-to-feather ratio. This is the figure you will usually find. Almost every Moncler piece here lists 90 percent down and 10 percent feather. Feathers add weight without much loft, so more down means a lighter jacket for the same warmth.
- Fill weight. How much down is inside matters as much as its quality. The mountain guiding company Alpine Ascents calls fill weight the first thing to find out when shopping for a down jacket. Excellent down, sparingly used, can be colder than plenty of ordinary down.
- Quilting and shell. Sewn-through quilting stitches the shell straight to the lining: lighter, but each seam is a line with no down in it, which Alpine Ascents warns can form cold spots. Box baffles separate the chambers with fabric walls, which it describes as warmer and heavier. If the quilting lines run through to the lining, the jacket is sewn through. Then there is wind: a tightly woven nylon stops it, and a wool face needs help underneath, which is why Brunello Cucinelli bonds a thin layer to its wool flannel.
What the labels on our picks say:
| Piece | Shell | Fill, as listed | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Moncler Maya | Glossy nylon laqué | 90% down, 10% feather | The benchmark ratio for a city puffer |
| Versace Barocco hooded down jacket | 100% polyamide | 80% goose down, 20% goose feathers | More feather: a little more weight for the warmth |
| Jil Sander technical down jacket | Polyamide with polyurethane | 85% down, 15% goose feathers, plus a polyester filling | Two fills in one jacket; the listing says hand wash |
| Givenchy Couture Seam blouson | Polyester | 90% duck down, 10% duck feather | Duck, not goose; Moncler's listings name no bird |
| Brunello Cucinelli suede vest | Suede | 25 grams of goose down | A rare fill weight: a light layer |
| Loro Piana Hopton vest | Polyamide | 100% polyester | Quilted, but no down at all |
Also read the certification line. Some of Brunello Cucinelli's down vest listings say all the padding is certified to the Responsible Down Standard, which Textile Exchange calls a voluntary standard; it bans plucking live birds and force-feeding. Moncler applies its own DIST protocol, with the same two bans, which our Moncler guide explains.
The short down jacket: start with the Maya
Most of Moncler's men's short jackets are variations on the Maya, so learn it first: boudin quilting (from the French for sausage: the fat horizontal channels), a hood that detaches, an adjustable hem and a patch pocket on the sleeve. What changes is the fabric, and the fabric decides where you can wear it. The classic Maya is glossy nylon laqué, which reads as weekend clothing. The Maya Matte uses a soft, flat nylon that sits more easily with flannel trousers and a good coat. The Maya 70 is cut from longue saison, a light nylon that Moncler counts among its emblematic materials. If you will own one, our stylists would choose the Matte, which works from a Saturday cable knit to a shirt and sweater on Monday.
The Montbeliard is laqué too, with the house's blue, white and red stripe beside the zip. The hoodless Daniel pairs boudin quilting with an ultralight nylon yoke. The Verith is the cleanest shape here, in what Moncler calls nylon technique. The Solienn and Arneb are made from Airsoft, a light, water-repellent polyester, in khaki and sand.
Well below freezing, or on open platforms, you want length (see below).
- Chocolate laqué Maya, cream cable crewneck, ecru jeans, dark brown suede boots.
- Olive Maya Matte, ecru fisherman sweater, gray flannel trousers, dark brown suede boots.
- Navy Maya 70, gray crewneck, black jeans, white leather sneakers.

Short puffers from Prada, Brunello Cucinelli and Zegna
Outside Moncler, short puffers are technical or tailored. Prada's Re-Nylon jackets are technical: the forest green puffer is cut from 100 percent recycled polyamide, and the medium-weight down jacket has a regular fit, goose down and a hem rounded at the back. Burberry's Check-Zip puts the house check on the zip placket and adds a two-way zip, and Zegna's navy jacket is a quilted shell lined with down and feathers.
The tailored ones earn their price in cloth. Brunello Cucinelli's navy jacket is stretch nylon bonded to a thin membrane, with heat-bonded seams and a detachable hood. Bottega Veneta's cotton-blend down jacket, in a sage the house calls Tarragon, has a detachable collar of woven Intrecciato leather. Loro Piana's is reversible, colour-blocked on one side and army green on the other, with an oversized stand collar. Tom Ford's army-green bomber is quilted in chevrons, and its listing names insulating padding, not down.
- Forest green Prada, cream rollneck, gray flannel trousers, brown suede loafers.
- Black Burberry Check-Zip, gray hoodie, black jeans, black boots.

Long down coats and parkas: the warmest puffer jacket for men
Length is warmth you can see: a coat over the seat and upper thighs closes the gap where a short jacket lets wind in at the hem, and a hood makes it the warmest shape a city puffer comes in. Moncler's Vexin is the plain long version: hooded, with a double closure, in a water-repellent two-layer polyester matte enough to wear over a suit. The Okefen hides its quilting under a water-repellent shell the house calls Aquaflect Light. The Bretagne is mid-length, in matte longue saison, with roomy pockets. The Evrine, a button-front parka, is designed for transitional weather, according to the listing, so treat it as the lightest of the four.
Three coats here are made for men in tailoring. Canali's gabardine coat hides a down-padded, quilted lining behind tailored lapels and zips in a removable wool bib at the neck. Brunello Cucinelli's double-breasted coat is quilted wool filled with down, with a shearling collar. Zegna's gray melange wool coat lists 90 percent down. Brunello's stretch nylon parka has a buttoned double back vent, so it moves over a jacket when you walk.
- Over a suit: the Canali coat, a charcoal suit, a white shirt, black oxfords.
- Weekend: black Vexin, gray hoodie, black jeans, black lug-sole boots.
- Country: olive Evrine, cream turtleneck, gray flannel trousers, dark brown boots.

How to wear a puffer jacket with a suit
Our stylists' five rules (styling judgement, not a dress code):
- Cover the jacket. The puffer's hem must fall below the suit jacket's. A waist-length puffer over a suit leaves a tail of jacket hanging out below it, a mistake we see often. Choose mid-length or longer, or leave the suit jacket at the office.
- Choose a quiet face. Wool, flannel, gabardine and matte nylon read as tailoring; gloss and large logos read as weekend.
- Size it over the jacket. Try the puffer on over your heaviest suit jacket. If the sleeves ruck up or the shoulders press, go up a size: down pressed flat between two layers has lost its loft. A two-way zip lets you open the hem when you sit.
- Mind the collar. A stand collar zipped to just below the knot frames a tie. Take the hood off on workdays.
- Keep the colour simple. Navy, charcoal or black over gray and navy suits; olive over gray flannel.
If a full coat is too warm for a heated train, wear a thin down vest or a padded cardigan under your overcoat instead (both below). Ask our AI stylist to match a puffer to the suits and coats in your closet.
Down jackets in wool, flannel and cashmere
These pass for tailoring: down under a wool or cashmere face. Moncler's Panyol is short, in virgin wool, with a button front, a high collar and a light AirSoft lining. The Bess, in virgin wool with a stand collar and pull-out hood, is the one the house says goes with business attire; it is short, so wear it over a sweater with suit trousers, not over the jacket. The Limberl uses a double-knit flannel blend with some stretch and hides its down entirely. Brunello Cucinelli's hooded jacket is wool flannel with the thin bonded layer described above and 90 percent goose down, its paneled version sets a shearling collar on the same bonded flannel, and its herringbone jacket is quilted from cashmere and silk.
Burberry's navy cashmere jacket has a packaway hood and the leather Knight stamp on the sleeve. Zegna's light taupe wool jacket closes with a two-way zip under snaps and lines its pockets in silk.
The trade-off is weather. Wool soaks up rain that nylon sheds. A bonded layer helps (Brunello Cucinelli says it adds protection from the elements), but the cloth still gets wet and must dry on a hanger, and it can pill where a bag strap rubs.
- Navy Panyol, gray rollneck, charcoal flannel trousers, black derbies.
- Gray Brunello flannel jacket, cream rollneck, charcoal trousers, white leather sneakers.

The hybrid: knitwear and shirt jackets with a down front
The hybrid puts down where the wind hits and knit where you move. Moncler's down cardigan is a wool and cashmere knit with a quilted front filled with 90 percent down; its padded wool hoodie, the house says, doubles as outerwear in milder weather. Tom Ford's jacket is knitted wool with a quilted shell front panel and leather along the placket and stand collar. Burberry's slim Dunsbury quilts a water-resistant nylon body and finishes it with knit sleeves. Brunello Cucinelli's rollneck cardigan is jacquard cashmere over a layer of down.
Shirt jackets do the same in a flatter shape. Prada pads a cashmere shirt. Kiton lines a lightly padded shell overshirt in jersey and suggests it over tailoring. Moncler's Tollymore is a down shirt jacket in water-repellent Aquaflect.
Size these like a sweater: they sit close over a shirt, with an overcoat on top.
- Moncler's down cardigan over a white oxford shirt, gray flannel trousers and black loafers, with a navy overcoat on top.
- Beige padded hoodie, white T-shirt, ecru jeans, white leather sneakers.

Down vests and gilets
A vest does two jobs. In October it is the outer layer over a knit. In January it goes under a tailored coat, warming the chest without bulk at the arms. The two jobs need different vests.
The over-layer can be full and shiny: Moncler's Bormes is boudin-quilted laqué with a hood and a two-way zip. Prada's Re-Nylon vest is padded with goose down and rounded at the back hem, like its jacket. Tom Ford's gilet is quilted in chevrons in a shell with a little stretch.
The under-layer must be thin and flat. Brunello Cucinelli's cashmere flannel vest closes with snaps, and its suede vest, with 25 grams of goose down, has a shirt collar. Moncler's Gienah is reversible, wool-blend check on one side and matte polyester on the other, with what the house calls medium-weight down. Zegna's padded twill vest buttons like a waistcoat. Loro Piana's Hopton has suede details and a virgin wool lining over a polyester fill.
In the fitting room, read the collar and the front before the label. A hood or tall stand collar bunches under a coat's collar, and a chunky zip in thick nylon leaves a ridge down the chest; a low collar and a snap or button front lie flat, which is why the waistcoat-shaped vests are the January ones. For thinner quilted liners, see our men's fall jackets guide.

Lightweight and packable down for travel
A packable jacket is the one you carry in case: on a plane, in a weekend bag. Moncler's Sergesta and Forzo come with a dedicated pouch, and the Gamma packs into its own. The Gui gilet, in longue saison, is designed to layer over knits or lighter jackets. Brunello Cucinelli's vest is lightweight nylon taffeta, and its listing asks for specialist wet cleaning rather than dry cleaning. Thom Browne's ripstop liner vest is padded with 85 percent goose down. Prada's Light Re-Nylon vest is a two-layer fabric the house calls waterproof, windproof and breathable, with a hood that tucks into the collar. Burberry's down overshirt looks like a shirt.
Unpack it when you arrive. Moncler's own care advice is to store a down jacket hanging up and not compressed, so the pouch is for the journey, not for the closet.

Colour, shine and pattern: the one-season puffer
Buy this jacket second, once the dark one is in your closet, and keep everything else plain. Moncler's Bendola is the shiniest jacket here, in what the house calls super laqué, an extra-shiny take on its laqué, here in deep purple. The white Maya shows every mark, which is half its charm. The forest green Valclaire is diamond-quilted micro ripstop with glossy snaps. Givenchy's poppy red blouson has curved couture seams that round out its shape. Versace's Barocco jacket is plain black gloss until the hood opens to show the house's gold baroque print inside. Casablanca quilts its monogram across the whole jacket. Jil Sander's comes in a vivid green the house calls Beetle. Burberry's Snowdon reverses from the house check to a plain side, which makes it two jackets.
Enjoy these for a season or two: a statement colour dates faster than black, and gloss scuffs faster than a matte face.

How a men's puffer jacket should fit
Down only insulates when it can loft, so a puffer tight over your layers is a cold one. Moncler sizes by number, and its size guide converts the men's numbers like this. The chest is a body measurement, taken with the tape under the arms, not the jacket's size:
| Moncler | Italian | US | Chest (body) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 | 44 | XS | 88 cm (34.6 in) |
| 1 | 46 | S | 92 cm (36.2 in) |
| 2 | 48 | M | 96 cm (37.8 in) |
| 3 | 50 | L | 100 cm (39.4 in) |
| 4 | 52 | XL | 106 cm (41.7 in) |
| 5 | 54 | XXL | 112 cm (44.1 in) |
| 6 | 56 | 3XL | 118 cm (46.5 in) |
| 7 | 58 | 4XL | 124 cm (48.8 in) |
Elsewhere the system follows the retailer: Italian numbers for Canali, Kiton and Tom Ford, US numbers for Prada's Re-Nylon puffer, letters for Burberry and for Moncler's padded knits. Then run our stylists' fitting-room checks:
- Wear the thickest layer that will go under it: a heavy sweater or your suit jacket.
- Zip it to the top. The collar should close around your neck without pressing on your chin.
- Reach both arms forward, as if for a steering wheel: the back should not pull and the cuffs should stay over your wrists.
- Slide a flat hand inside the zipped front. If it will not go, the down is being squashed.
- Check the hem: a short jacket should cover your waistband by a few inches.
Too big is its own problem: cold air pumps in at the hem every time you move.
How to care for a down jacket
Read the sewn-in label first, because the houses disagree. Brunello Cucinelli's flannel jacket, suede vest and taffeta vest all say do not dry clean and send you to a specialist, while its nylon parka asks for specialist dry cleaning. Thom Browne's liner vest says dry clean. Versace says machine wash at 30°C (86°F), Burberry's Dunsbury says machine wash, and Jil Sander says hand wash. Between cleanings, hang it on a broad hanger, dry it at room temperature after rain and shake the down back into place. Keep a heavy shoulder bag off it: the strap flattens the down exactly where you need it.
Where to spend on down, and where to have fun
- Buy once and keep: a short matte down jacket in black, navy, charcoal or olive; a mid-length or long down coat in a matte or wool face if you wear a suit; one thin, flat-fronted vest that fits under your overcoat.
- Enjoy for a season: lacquered colours, monograms, checks and cropped shapes.
- Common mistakes: the warmest coat for a mild city, sweated through on every train; gloss with tailoring; sizing for a T-shirt, then wearing a cable knit; a hood that cannot be adjusted and blows off in the first wind.
How we chose
We started from the label: each listing was read for shell and fill, and a piece padded with polyester or unnamed padding is called padded, not down. Ski jackets with powder skirts and lift-pass pockets were left to our ski guide. For the suit section we wanted length or a flat front; the vests are sorted by collar and closure, not by house. Every Moncler piece comes from Moncler's own catalogue on Vêtir, each photograph was checked against its listing, and we preferred wide size runs. Prices run from just over a thousand dollars to just under ten thousand, across fifteen houses.
Frequently asked questions
What is the warmest puffer jacket for men?
A long, hooded down coat in a windproof shell, sized so the down is not compressed over your layers; among our picks, start with Moncler's Vexin and Okefen. Between two coats of the same length, compare fill weight or down share where the listings give them.
What fill power is good for a winter jacket?
Higher fill power means more insulation for each ounce of down, but warmth also depends on how much down is inside and how it is quilted, so compare fill power only between jackets tested the same way. Most luxury listings give a down-to-feather ratio instead; 90/10 is the common figure.
Can you wear a puffer jacket with a suit?
Yes, if it covers the suit jacket and looks quiet: a mid-length or long down coat in wool, gabardine or matte nylon, in navy, charcoal or black, sized over your heaviest jacket. Skip the short glossy puffer.
What size Moncler jacket should I buy?
Moncler's men's chart puts size 1 at Italian 46 and US small, 2 at 48 and medium, 3 at 50 and large, and 4 at 52 and extra large, matched to your chest measurement rather than the jacket's. Start from the size your chest measurement gives, and go up one only if the jacket goes over a suit jacket and the shoulders press.
What color puffer jacket should a man buy first?
A dark neutral: black, navy, charcoal or olive, ideally matte so it also works with tailoring, over gray, white and cream knits. Our stylists wear a chocolate or tan puffer with cream, ecru, gray and olive. Save white, purple and bright green for a second jacket.
Should I buy down or a synthetic puffer?
Down is warmer for its weight and packs smaller, but clumps when soaked. Synthetic padding, like the polyester in Loro Piana's Hopton vest, copes better with damp and cleans more simply but weighs more for the same warmth. In a wet city, choose synthetic, or down under a bonded or water-repellent shell.
