What to Wear in New York at Christmas: The Coat, the Boots and an Outfit for Every Plan

What to wear in New York at Christmas: one long, warm coat, leather boots with rubber lug soles, thin layers that come off underground, and one dark evening outfit that works with the same boots. The National Weather Service's 1991–2020 normals for Central Park put December at a high of 44°F and a low of 34°F, and by our reading of the same normals, most of the month's precipitation falls as rain rather than snow. A wool or cashmere coat to the knee covers most of the trip; switch to down when the forecast drops below freezing or your evenings keep you outdoors. For a show and a late dinner, velvet trousers or a long-sleeved black dress will do.
Below: the weather, the coat, the boots and the layers, then an outfit for each part of the trip and a packing list.
What to wear in New York at Christmas, starting with the weather
These are the 1991–2020 daily normals from the National Weather Service's Central Park December almanac:
| Date | Normal high | Normal low | What it means for the outfit |
|---|---|---|---|
| December 1 | 49°F | 38°F | A wool coat worn open over a fine knit, gloves in the pocket |
| December 15 | 44°F | 34°F | The coat buttoned to the throat, a scarf, gloves on after dark |
| December 25 | 42°F | 32°F | Add a hat or earmuffs; down for any evening spent outside |
| December 31 | 41°F | 30°F | Down and a thin base layer if you will be outdoors near midnight |
The normals give the month 4.38 inches of precipitation, counted as water with any snow melted down, and 4.9 inches of snowfall, counted as depth. At the old rule of thumb of ten inches of snow to one of water, that snow is about half an inch of the total, which is why we plan for wet pavement first. Snow makes the photographs; slush makes the trip. After a storm the curb cuts at crosswalks fill with gray water, so you want a boot you can step into a puddle with. Averages hide range, too: on Christmas Day alone, Central Park has recorded 66°F (in 2015) and -1°F (in 1980). Read the ten-day forecast before choosing between wool and down, and dress for three climates:
- The street, in the thirties and forties for most of the month. This is what the coat is for.
- Indoors, where subway cars, stores, museums and theaters are heated, often warmer than your own home. Hence a thin layer under the coat.
- Standing still outside, at the tree, the windows or a line for the rink. It is the coldest part of any day, and it is where boots, a hat and gloves earn their place.
The coat for a New York winter trip
You will wear one coat every day and in every photograph. Choose it for the city, not for the coldest day of the year:
- Length to the knee or below, for all the standing outside a visit involves.
- A neck that closes. A collar that stands, a hood, or a scarf you will actually wear.
- Room for a fine knit, not a chunky one. Indoors you strip to whatever is underneath, so size the coat over a cashmere turtleneck rather than a sweater you would end up carrying.
- A dark color. Salt and slush splash every hem in town, and dark cloth hides them. A pale coat is lovely for a dry week and will need cleaning when you get home.
Max Mara's long double-breasted coat in virgin wool broadcloth, with peak lapels, is the plainest and most useful shape here. Isabel Marant's Erla is long and double-breasted in a textured charcoal wool and cotton, with a back slit for a long stride. Max Mara's Ludmilla Icon is pure cashmere, tied rather than buttoned, in a burnt brown the house calls bruciato. TOTEME's hooded coat in double-faced wool ties at the waist, and its structured hood frames the face like a high collar. Zimmermann's Valiant coat comes with a draped scarf attached, which settles the neck question for anyone who never wears one. Max Mara's teddy coat in alpaca, wool and silk is the short exception, a parka-length coat that zips up to a hood. Our edit of the best winter coats goes deeper on cloth, and there are more in every designer coat on Vêtir.
- Charcoal and red. Isabel Marant's long charcoal coat, a smoke-gray cashmere turtleneck, charcoal wool trousers, black lug-sole Chelsea boots and a red crossbody bag.
- Burnt brown and cream. Max Mara's Ludmilla over an ivory turtleneck and cream wool trousers, with burgundy loafers on a dry day.
- Beige and black. The hooded teddy coat zipped over a black turtleneck, black velvet trousers and black boots.

When to pack a down coat instead
Pack down if the forecast shows daytime highs below freezing, or if your plans keep you outside after dark: the tree after a show, an evening skate, New Year's Eve outdoors. In the city, three details matter more than on a ski trip. A two-way zip lets you open the coat from the hem when you sit on a train; Max Mara's navy hooded coat from The Cube line has one. A removable hood, like the one on Burberry's Audley, means the coat still works with a hat. And down squashes into a small bundle on your lap in a theater seat, which wool never does.
Moncler's Rochelairs, from its Grenoble ski line, is lacquered nylon filled with 90 percent down. Burberry's Audley is cut like a trench, double-breasted and belted, in black and in a deep red listed as vineyard red. Prada's cropped Re-Nylon jacket has a drawstring waist and zipped pockets, which is why it is the one we would skate in. Our guide to designer puffer coats compares more.
- Red for the photographs. The red Audley over a black turtleneck, black velvet trousers and black lug-sole boots.
- Navy and gray. Max Mara's navy hooded down coat over a gray cashmere turtleneck, charcoal trousers and black Chelsea boots.

Shoes for walking New York in December
Your shoes decide the trip. A Manhattan day moves between wet pavement, slush at the crosswalks, subway stairs and polished store floors. Our rules for the everyday pair:
- Rubber, with lugs. Leather soles slide on wet stairs and wet marble alike. Fendi's Commando Chelsea boots and Tod's Gomma Chelsea boots both have lugged rubber soles, according to their listings, and Brunello Cucinelli sets its Chelsea boot on a chunky lugged sole about three-quarters of an inch high.
- Smooth leather, not suede. Road salt leaves white tide marks. Wipe them with a damp cloth the same evening and let the boots dry away from the radiator.
- A shaft that clears the slush. Prada's brushed-leather Chelsea boot has a 6.2-inch shaft on a 1.9-inch rubber sole, per its listing, enough for a curb puddle.
- A zip as well as laces. Gianvito Rossi's and Valentino Garavani's lace-up boots both zip at the side, so you get in and out of them without unlacing.
- Broken in at home. Your first long day in a new pair should not be the day of the windows walk.
For real snow, Moncler's Vera boots have a rubber-and-nylon upper, a fleece-and-leather lining and a cushioned rubberized sole, closer to a hiking boot than a city boot. Our guide to the best winter boots covers shearling and snow boots, and there are more Chelsea boots on Vêtir.
- Garnet with charcoal. Valentino Garavani's lace-ups in dark garnet with charcoal trousers and a charcoal coat, so the color looks chosen.

Layering for the subway and the stores
The cold is the part of a New York December you plan for; the heat is what catches you out. Trains, stores and galleries are all warm, and you move between them and the street all day. Keep the warmth in what comes off in one move (the coat, the scarf, the gloves) and keep what is underneath thin.
- One fine knit, not two thick ones. A fine-gauge turtleneck in cashmere and silk, like Gabriela Hearst's Peppe (70 percent cashmere, 30 percent silk, per its listing), is warm under a coat and bearable in a hot car.
- A turtleneck stays on. You can unbutton a coat on a hot train but not a roll-neck, so make it fine rather than chunky. If you run warm, a crewneck and a scarf give you more control.
- Save the base layer for after dark: the tree, the rink, midnight outdoors, not a day in the shops.
- Choose colors for the coat. Gray and ivory go under any coat; black suits the black, charcoal, red and beige ones; burgundy, olive and navy add one quiet color against charcoal or black.
Brunello Cucinelli knits a lightweight turtleneck from cashmere and silk with a fine lamé thread, so it also goes to dinner. Browse more turtleneck tops.
- Olive and black. Victoria Beckham's olive merino turtleneck, black wool trousers, black Chelsea boots and a long black coat.
- Navy and gray. Stella McCartney's navy ribbed turtleneck in cashmere and wool, gray flannel trousers, black boots and a charcoal coat.

The tree, the windows and Fifth Avenue
The Rockefeller Center Christmas tree arrives on Saturday, November 7, and is lit on Wednesday, December 2, according to Time Out New York. After the lighting it stands over the rink for the rest of the season, with Saks Fifth Avenue across the avenue. The holiday windows at Saks, at Bergdorf Goodman further up Fifth and at Macy's Herald Square are the other half of the walk.
Both mean standing still in a crowd, which is colder than any walk. Dress as if it were ten degrees colder than the forecast: a thick rubber sole, a hat or earmuffs, gloves on. In a crowd we carry only a crossbody bag that zips or latches, worn with the bag in front; a backpack or an open tote is easy to reach into from behind.
Check the strap against the coat it will go over: Burberry gives its leather crossbody an adjustable strap of about 16 to 23.5 inches, per its listing. Alexander McQueen's Sling closes with a magnet and a zip; Saint Laurent's Loulou Mini camera bag and Bottega Veneta's woven crossbody zip across the top; Tod's half-moon T Timeless closes with a magnetic flap and puts a strong red against a dark coat. Browse more crossbody bags.
- The window walk. A long black coat, a gray turtleneck, black velvet trousers, lug-sole Chelsea boots, ivory shearling earmuffs and the red half-moon bag.
- Charcoal and burgundy. The long charcoal coat over a black ribbed turtleneck and black trousers, with Bottega Veneta's deep-red woven crossbody and garnet lace-up boots.

What to wear ice skating in New York
The three outdoor rinks most visitors look for are The Rink at Rockefeller Center, Wollman Rink in Central Park and the rink at Bank of America Winter Village at Bryant Park, open from October 28 to February 28 this season. Skating there is free with your own skates, and its rules shape the outfit: bags, phones and cameras are not allowed on the ice, coats must be worn or checked, most sessions give you 50 minutes on the ice and lockers are limited. So skate in exactly what you will wear, and carry nothing:
- A short jacket, not a long coat. A hip-length down jacket keeps your knees free, and zipped pockets hold a card and a key; Prada's cropped Re-Nylon jacket has them, per its listing.
- Trousers that bend: stretch trousers or knit leggings, never a long skirt or a wide leg that can catch a blade.
- One pair of mid-weight knee socks. Rental boots fit worse over two thick pairs, and the squeeze makes cold toes colder. Bryant Park sells socks if you forget.
- Gloves, always. Leather or lined gloves shrug off a fall better than knit mittens, which soak through; keep the mittens for watching.
- A hat or earmuffs, and no long scarf. A scarf end flying behind you is a hazard to the skater beside you.
The Row's chunky cashmere Soizic slips on like a bonnet and ties in place, so it stays put on the ice, and TOTEME's Bordeaux gloves are lamb leather lined in silk. Our edit of the best designer gloves explains how to size them.
- Black, with burgundy. Prada's cropped black down jacket, Proenza Schouler's black ribbed turtleneck, black stretch trousers, TOTEME's black alpaca beanie and the Bordeaux leather gloves.
- Ivory and gray. Max Mara's reversible cashmere down jacket in ivory, a light-gray turtleneck, gray knit leggings and Burberry's ivory shearling earmuffs.
Beanies, earmuffs and gloves for the rink and the tree
Broadway, the Rockettes or the Nutcracker
A holiday show is the dressiest thing most visitors do, and the logistics matter more than the dress code, because there usually is none. The Christmas Spectacular at Radio City Music Hall, running from November 4 to January 4 this season, says in its visitor FAQ that the hall has no formal dress code and that festive attire is encouraged. The same page says the show runs 90 minutes with no intermission, there is no check for coats or bags (only strollers), and bags must fit under your seat; anything larger than 22 by 14 by 9 inches is prohibited. New York City Ballet's George Balanchine's The Nutcracker runs from November 27 to January 2 at the David H. Koch Theater and lasts about two hours; our guide to what to wear to the Nutcracker covers its coat check and stairs.
No coat check means 90 minutes with your coat on your lap: down squashes into a bundle and long wool folds, but a stiff, structured coat fights you all show. Under it, our December theater answer is velvet trousers, warm on the walk from the subway, dressy enough for any show and fine with the same lug-sole boots.
Choose the leg for how you will travel. Slim or straight velvet, like Dolce & Gabbana's cotton-and-silk pair, Khaite's high-waisted Ryden or Isabel Marant's cotton Roaya, stays clear of the slush on a subway night and sits neatly over a boot. Valentino Garavani's pleated burgundy pair, whose listing describes a sweeping floor-length leg, belongs to an evening with a car at the door. Etro's navy flares and Victoria Beckham's satin-waisted Alina flares sit in between: wear them with a boot that has some heel so the hem clears the street.
- Black velvet, gray shimmer. Khaite's Ryden, Brunello Cucinelli's light-gray lamé-thread turtleneck, black Chelsea boots and a long black coat.
- Burgundy and black. Valentino Garavani's burgundy velvet wide-legs, a fine black turtleneck, black loafers and a black down coat for the car.
- Cigar brown and ivory. Brunello Cucinelli's pleated velvet trousers in the color the house calls sigaro, an ivory cashmere-silk turtleneck, burgundy loafers and the beige teddy coat.

Dinner in New York: a black dress that works with boots
Black is the obvious answer for a New York dinner, and in December the practical one: it hides a splash from a taxi door and goes with the boots you walked in. Choose the dress by its sleeve, its hem and how it moves.
- Long sleeves, or a knit under short ones. A table near the door gets the street every time it opens. Victoria Beckham's wool crepe midi and Dolce & Gabbana's Milano-rib midi have long sleeves; a fine black turtleneck under Versace's short-sleeved wool-and-cashmere knit dress does the same job.
- A hem that works with the boot. A midi that stops at mid-calf leaves a stretch of leg above an ankle boot, and opaque black tights close the gap. Proenza Schouler's Golda reaches the ankle, in jersey that packs flat.
- Some give. You will climb in and out of cabs. Dolce & Gabbana's dress has a walking vent at the back, according to its listing; jersey and knits move without one.
Three dinner outfits:
- Black on black, one red note. Victoria Beckham's wool crepe midi, opaque black tights, black lug-sole Chelsea boots, the long black double-breasted coat and the red half-moon bag.
- Lace and charcoal. Valentino Garavani's black rib-knit dress with lace sleeves, sheer black tights, black leather ankle boots and the long charcoal coat.
- Velvet over a turtleneck. Khaite's Scarla, a black velvet mini with cap sleeves, over a fine black turtleneck and opaque tights, with black loafers.

The museum day and the department-store day
Plan the museums around the calendar: the Metropolitan Museum of Art on Fifth Avenue is closed every Wednesday, and on Thanksgiving Day, December 25 and January 1. A museum day and a department-store day are both long walks on hard floors in warm buildings, so dress for them alike:
- A flat shoe with a real sole. After mornings in boots, a loafer is a relief on gallery floors, but the street is still wet. Prada's loafers sit on a heavily lugged rubber platform, Miu Miu's on a studded rubber lug sole, and Tod's penny loafer has a rubber outsole under a 60mm block heel. Loewe's Double L, Christian Louboutin's Plato on its red leather outsole and Saint Laurent's suede Le Loafer are for dry days; suede and road salt do not get along.
- Slip-ons for trying on. If you plan to try shoes at Bergdorf Goodman or Saks, loafers save you a minute of laces every time.
- A thin layer to try a jacket over. A fine turtleneck, not a sweater, so a blazer in the fitting room fits the way it will at home.
Two outfits for the day:
- Gallery gray. A smoke-gray cashmere-silk turtleneck, charcoal wide-leg trousers, Prada's black lug-sole loafers and the long charcoal coat.
- Cream and mahogany. An ivory turtleneck, cream wool trousers, Tod's mahogany penny loafers and Max Mara's burnt-brown Ludmilla.

Packing for New York at Christmas: a five-day list
- One long coat in wool or cashmere, or a long down coat if highs are forecast below freezing. A short down jacket only if you plan to skate.
- Rubber-soled leather boots for every day, and loafers for a dry museum or shopping day.
- Four fine knits: gray, ivory, black and one color.
- Two pairs of wool trousers and one pair of velvet trousers.
- One black dress with sleeves, plus opaque tights to wear it with boots.
- A hat or earmuffs, leather gloves, a scarf, and a thin base layer for evenings outside.
- A crossbody bag that closes, small enough to sit under a theater seat.
Tell our AI stylist your dates and the coat you are bringing, and it will plan an outfit for each day of the trip. If New York is one stop on a longer winter journey, our guide to what to wear in Paris in winter covers the damp cold there.
What to buy once, and the mistakes to avoid
Buy once: black rubber-soled leather Chelsea boots, a long dark wool coat that closes at the neck, two or three fine cashmere-and-silk turtlenecks and lined leather gloves; you will wear them every winter, at home as much as away. Enjoy for a season: shearling earmuffs, a red puffer, floor-length velvet. They make the photographs, and you will reach for them less once December is over.
- A chunky sweater under the coat. You will carry it through every store and gallery.
- Puddling hems on a subway night. Floor-length trousers soak up slush at every crosswalk.
- A polar parka for a mild week. If the forecast sits in the forties, you will carry it more than you wear it.
How we chose
We started from the city's conditions and rules. Every walking boot has a rubber or lugged sole, per its listing, and every bag closes with a zip, a flap or a toggle. The rink edit follows Bryant Park's rule that bags stay off the ice, which is why the jacket we would skate in has zipped pockets; Radio City's lack of a coat check is why we steer you to a coat that folds onto your lap. Every dinner dress has sleeves or takes a knit underneath. The 72 pieces come from 30 houses, all new and none pre-owned, and on October 19 every one of the 56 garments and shoes among them was offered in at least four sizes. We judged color from the photographs, not the labels: Max Mara's Ludmilla is listed as chocolate brown and photographs as a reddish burnt brown, and its reversible down jacket, listed as champagne, photographs as ivory.
Frequently asked questions
What should I wear in New York in December?
A long wool or cashmere coat that closes at the neck, leather boots with rubber lug soles, fine knits that suit a heated train, gloves, a hat or earmuffs and a scarf. Add a down coat if highs are forecast below freezing, and pack one dark evening outfit that works with your boots.
How cold is New York at Christmas?
Central Park's 1991–2020 normals for December 25 are a high of 42°F and a low of 32°F, but Christmas Day has reached 66°F (2015) and fallen to -1°F (1980), so check the forecast before you pack.
Do I need snow boots for New York in December?
Usually not. Central Park's December snowfall normal is 4.9 inches for the whole month. Smooth leather boots with lugged rubber soles handle most days; pack snow boots only if a storm is forecast.
What should I wear to see the Rockefeller Center tree?
Dress for standing still: a long coat, boots with a thick rubber sole, a hat or earmuffs and gloves, as if it were ten degrees colder than the forecast. Carry a crossbody bag that closes, worn in front. The 2026 lighting is on Wednesday, December 2.
What do you wear ice skating in New York?
A short jacket with zipped pockets, stretch trousers or knit leggings, one pair of knee socks, gloves and a hat or earmuffs. Bryant Park keeps bags and phones off the ice, so check them or lock them up before your session.
Is there a dress code for the Radio City Christmas Spectacular?
No. Radio City Music Hall has no formal dress code and encourages festive attire. There is no coat or bag check, bags must fit under your seat, and the show runs 90 minutes without an intermission, so wear a coat you can hold on your lap.
