The Best Party Tops for the Holidays, From Sequins and Velvet to Bows and Corsets

The best party tops this season do one festive thing well: sequins or beading that throw light, velvet with its low glow, a satin camisole, lace, a metallic knit, a sheer blouse, a bow or a boned corset. Wear a sparkling top with velvet trousers or a long satin skirt to a cocktail or festive invitation, a velvet or satin top with dark jeans to dinner at a friend's home, and a sheer blouse or a corset with a floor-length skirt when the card says black tie optional. Choose the top for the room and the bottom half for the hours you will spend in it.

Below: the tops by fabric and shape, each with an edit to shop, then the bottoms that finish them, sizing and care.

How to choose party tops, and when separates are enough

The top is the part of a party outfit people see: at a seated dinner, the table sees you from the waist up for three hours. It is also what people ask us for. In typed requests to Vêtir's AI stylist over the 12 months to September 26, 2026, tops, blouses, shirts and tees were the garments named by the most users after dresses: 171 users, against 240 for dresses.

Etiquette allows separates at most holiday invitations. The Emily Post Institute's attire guide lists nice jeans with a dressy top under dressy casual, a long dressy skirt and top under semi-formal, dressy separates under black tie optional, and a long skirt and top or a dressy pants outfit under festive attire, its holiday-party code. Its black-tie list names only a floor-length gown, a dressy cocktail dress and your dressiest little black dress. For black tie, our advice is a gown; if you would rather wear separates, choose a floor-length skirt and a top in one color, so the line reads as a single evening dress.

Our stylists' shorthand:

VelvetA satin skirt, tuxedo trousers, black jeansDinners, the theater, cold venues
Satin camisoleA tuxedo suit, velvet trousers, a long cardiganThe office party, dinners

Corset or bustierA long skirt, wide trousers, a blazer on topCocktail parties, black tie optional
Halter or open backHigh-waisted trousers, a column skirtWarm rooms: hotel bars, clubs

Three rules hold for every top:

  • Put the interest above the table. A bow at the neck or a beaded collar works harder at dinner than an embellished skirt.
  • Let the light come from one place. Pair a reflective top with a matte bottom: sequins with velvet or wool, lamé with crepe, satin with velvet. Two shiny halves fight unless they match exactly.
  • Balance the volume. A fitted top wants wide trousers or a full skirt; big sleeves or a large bow want a slim trouser or a pencil skirt. Cropped tops and corsets need a high waist, so raise your arms in the fitting room and check the top still meets the waistband.

Sequin tops and beaded tops

The size of the sequin sets the mood. Large paillettes swing as you move and throw the most light in a dim room, and they are the oldest signature at Rabanne: the Philadelphia Museum of Art holds a 1966 Rabanne dress of hundreds of plastic disks linked by metal rings, from the debut line he called Twelve Unwearable Dresses in Contemporary Materials. Rabanne's silver paillette top this season is 30 percent steel, according to the listing. Small sequins packed close, as on Prada's short-sleeved top, read as one shimmering surface. Beading and embroidery are the quietest versions: Rabanne's mock-neck satin top is beaded and sequined in silver all over, and Isabel Marant's black mesh Myza top is scattered with strass.

For comfort over four hours, choose a sleeveless cut or a lined sleeve, because sequins rub the inside of the arm; a wide, firm strap under heavy paillettes rather than a spaghetti one; and a clutch, since a chain strap catches sequins where it rests. Check the length too. Carolina Herrera's black top, rows of paillettes on silk double-georgette from the fall 2026 runway, is cropped and needs a high waist below.

  • Silver on black. Rabanne's paillette top with black velvet wide-leg trousers and black satin pumps.
  • Black strass, gray satin. Isabel Marant's Myza top with a gray satin midi skirt and sheer black tights.
  • Rose gold for dancing. Rabanne's close-fitting rose-gold tulle blouse, scattered with oversized sequins, over black tuxedo trousers and a low heel.
  • Ivory for the formal room. Brunello Cucinelli's silk chiffon blouse, its sequins shading into feathers, tucked into a black satin maxi skirt.

More sequined and crystal styles are in our embellished tops edit.

The velvet top

Velvet is the warmest party fabric and the kindest in candlelight: in a dark color it reads as rich rather than shiny. Tagwalk, which tracks runway collections, lists velvet among its fall/winter 2026 womenswear trends and illustrates it with an ALAÏA look. ALAÏA's off-the-shoulder velvet bodysuit is the cleanest way in: it fastens with snaps, so it stays smooth under a waistband all night, and the bare shoulders do the work of a necklace.

Fluid viscose-and-silk velvet drapes: Givenchy's red halter is open at the back and gathers at the waist before falling in a long drape past the hip, and Magda Butrym's black peplum top is 80 percent viscose, 20 percent silk. Cotton velvet is matte and holds a tailored line, which is why Max Mara's emerald vest works buttoned on its own as a top. Zimmermann's Valiant sets a velvet V into an ivory jersey top, and Valentino Garavani's tiered black blouse is so full its listing suggests wearing it as a mini dress. One rule: velvet against velvet loses the texture, so wear satin, crepe, wool or denim below.

  • Red velvet, black tuxedo. Givenchy's halter with black tuxedo trousers, black satin pumps and nothing at the neck.
  • Emerald and black. Max Mara's velvet vest, buttoned to the top, with black satin trousers and gold hoops.
  • Navy velvet, black denim. Etro's navy velvet top, its long tie collar finished in fringe, with black jeans and velvet flats for dinner at home.

Satin tops and silk camisoles

A satin camisole is the most useful party top you can own: alone at dinner, under a tuxedo jacket at the office party, with a long cardigan at a friend's house. Trendalytics' fall/winter 2026 report on colors, prints and fabrics names shimmering silk and sheer lace as the fabrics driving eveningwear this season.

Read the label before the color. Max Mara's black camisole is acetate and viscose, which drapes like silk for far less and is the one to wear under tailoring every week. PUCCI's lavender-print camisole is all silk, and Gabriela Hearst's burgundy Melina is double silk satin, heavy enough to hold the spiral that rises from its cowl neck. Tom Ford's black camisole, edged in white, has slender straps that cross at the back, so they stay put when you reach for a glass. The Row's draped Koray has dropped armholes; under it, and under any thin-strapped camisole, wear a strapless bra or a bandeau in the camisole's color.

  • Burgundy satin, black velvet. Gabriela Hearst's Melina with black velvet straight-leg trousers and gold earrings.
  • The office version. Max Mara's camisole under a black tuxedo suit with pointed pumps. The jacket comes off when the party starts.
  • Pale blue in winter. Chloé's sky-blue silk satin camisole, trimmed in lace with a drawstring waist, under a long ivory cardigan with gray flannel trousers.

Lace tops

Lace changes with what sits underneath it. Black lace over a black camisole reads as evening; over bare skin it reads as lingerie, right at a late party and wrong at the office. Check the listing for a lining: Valentino Garavani's top, turquoise-green lace on black tulle with blouson sleeves and a scalloped V-neck, lists a nylon lining, while the house's sleeveless black lace top is sheer and needs a camisole of your own. Rabanne's scalloped off-the-shoulder top in deep plum is a lightweight stretch lace its listing says can be machine washed cold.

The easiest lace tops use it as a frame. Rabanne's deep-navy satin top keeps lace for the mock neck and sleeves, Alexander McQueen's black peplum top has it only at the hem, and Dolce & Gabbana's black top edges floral lace in satin, with a tie at the front. Zimmermann's Valiant is an open knit run with metallic threads and tiers of ruffles: the effect of lace for less.

  • Black lace, gray satin. Elie Saab's lace top over a black camisole, with a gray satin midi skirt and black satin pumps.
  • Green lace, black velvet. Valentino's lace top with black velvet trousers and silver earrings.
  • Plum lace, black denim. Rabanne's off-the-shoulder top with black wide-leg jeans and ankle boots for a party at home.

Holiday party tops for the office: metallic knits and lamé

A metallic knit is the party top that survives the office. It shines like lamé, wears like a sweater and works with the wool trousers you wore to work. The composition tells you how much it will shine: Missoni's wave top is 21 percent metallic fiber and Valentino Garavani's black cut-out sweater 19 percent, so both glint rather than glare. Ferragamo's gold turtleneck, virgin wool with what its listing calls a high-shine metallic finish and a draped scarf at the neck, reads like liquid gold across a room.

Alexander McQueen's silver cable knit is the cleverest: its listing calls it chainmail-inspired, and it is knitted from viscose, paper and metallic polyamide. In the photographs, ALAÏA's black lamé sweater is sheer through the body with full, cuffed sleeves. Chloé's rose-gold Lurex sweater has a ruffled high neck and puffed elbow-length sleeves, and Isabel Marant's Cevara tank, an alpaca-and-mohair knit with shimmering stripes, is the least expensive way in. At the office, keep to one shining piece and dress the rest as you would for a meeting.

  • Gold on gray. Ferragamo's gold turtleneck with gray wool trousers and black loafers.
  • Silver cable, black denim. Alexander McQueen's silver knit with black jeans and a black velvet blazer for drinks after work.
  • Rose gold and ivory. Chloé's Lurex sweater with an ivory satin midi skirt and pearl earrings.

The sheer blouse, and what to wear under it

A sheer blouse is the most elegant way to wear black at night, and it needs a plan for underneath. A camisole in the blouse's color keeps the sheerness to the sleeves and shoulders, the version for an office party or a family dinner. A black bralette or bodysuit is more deliberate and suits a late party. Bare skin suits few rooms. Some blouses settle part of it: Carolina Herrera's black silk organza tie-neck lists a polyester lining, and Max Mara's beaded navy blouse is photographed over a matching camisole.

Silk organza is crisp and stands away from the body, adding volume at the shoulder: Valentino Garavani's ivory organza blouse has ruffles running in a V down the front and gathered cuffs. Chiffon and georgette fall close. Saint Laurent's brown chiffon top is cut close to the body, ALAÏA's black tie-neck blouse falls from a soft bow, and Valentino's sea-green plissé, shot with metallic threads, hangs loose below the hip. The most festive is Dolce & Gabbana's silver silk georgette, with a pussy bow and full sleeves gathered at the wrist. Our silk blouse guide covers the weaves in depth.

  • Black on black for black tie optional. Carolina Herrera's organza tie-neck tucked into a black silk-satin maxi skirt: one color from neck to hem, so the separates read as a gown.
  • Brown chiffon, cream below. Saint Laurent's brown top over a cream camisole, with ivory satin trousers and gold jewelry.
  • Ivory organza, black velvet. Valentino's ivory blouse with black velvet trousers and black satin pumps.

Our designer blouses page has more.

Bow tops and blouses

A bow is the easiest festive detail to wear to work and the hardest to get right in scale. A small bow reads as polish; a bow the size of your forearm is the outfit, so skip the necklace. Placement changes the effect. Alexander McQueen's ivory crêpe de chine blouse has a bow at one shoulder above an asymmetric neckline, Carolina Herrera's ivory silk halter wraps the waist and knots at the side in a falling sash, and Oscar de la Renta's black tulle top, embroidered with crystals and sequins, has a satin bow knotted across the front.

The pussy-bow blouse is the bow you will wear more than once. Valentino Garavani's is sheer black silk georgette with an elongated bow and a deep V; TOTEME's ivory ribbed bow blouse is the one for a Tuesday in February. Tie a pussy bow loosely and let the ends hang uneven: pulled tight and symmetrical, it looks like a uniform. Dolce & Gabbana's crimson wool sweater ties at the collar, and Carolina Herrera's raspberry wool crop top has a bow at the shoulder.

  • Ivory bow, black tuxedo. Alexander McQueen's blouse with black tuxedo trousers and black velvet pumps, the safe answer for an office party with partners invited.
  • Red wool for Christmas Eve. Dolce & Gabbana's crimson sweater with a black satin midi skirt and black tights.
  • Black bow, gray skirt. Valentino's georgette blouse over a black slip, with a gray satin midi skirt.

Corset and bustier tops

A corset top gives you the shape of an evening dress from the waist up, and it most needs trying on. Real boning keeps the bodice smooth and a strapless top up: Magda Butrym's ivory draped bustier, ALAÏA's long-sleeved black wool corset and Carolina Herrera's strapless top, beaded with 3D flowers over a sheer mesh bodice, all list boning, and Dolce & Gabbana's lace jacquard bustier lists inner corsetry. Elie Saab's champagne guipure bustier is boned, lined in silk and flares into a peplum. A knitted bustier holds by stretch, which is more comfortable over a long dinner: Jil Sander's is a gray ribbed wool blend, and Prada's navy wool-cashmere bandeau has natural pearls at the bustline.

Size a boned top to your bust and ribcage rather than your dress size, then sit down in it: if it digs at the hip or rides up, it is the wrong size or length. A strapless top you hitch up after lifting your arms is too big. Pair it with a high waist, and layer it over a fine knit or a white shirt for the office. Our corset outfit ideas go further.

  • Ivory bustier, black satin. Magda Butrym's bustier with a black silk-satin maxi skirt, long earrings and a black clutch.
  • Gray on gray. Jil Sander's ribbed bustier with gray flannel trousers and a long gray coat over the shoulders.
  • Champagne lace over black. Elie Saab's guipure bustier with black tuxedo trousers and pointed black pumps.

Shop every boned style in corsets and bustiers.

Going-out tops: halters, one-shoulders and open backs

Going-out tops are cut for warm rooms: a hotel bar, a club, a party where the coat is checked at the door. The halter flatters most shoulders and stays up without a strapless top's struggle. Stella McCartney's silver chainmail halter ties at the back. Balmain's gold Lurex halter crosses at the neck and leaves the back bare, and Phoebe Philo's ivory silk satin halter is backless, held by fine straps at the neck and waist. Givenchy's black knit halter pairs a high ribbed neck, set with jeweled flowers, with a bare back.

An open back rules out an ordinary bra. Our stylists use adhesive cups or a backless stick-on bra under a fluid halter and a strapless bra under a one-shoulder top, worn for an hour at home before the party. Saint Laurent's black silk drape tank has the boldest back here, open and trailing a long drape in the photographs; TOTEME's cotton one-shoulder top and Balenciaga's draped jersey one will work again in spring.

  • Silver mesh, black tuxedo. Stella McCartney's chainmail halter with high-waisted black tuxedo trousers and hair worn up.
  • Gold halter, black velvet. Balmain's Lurex halter with black velvet straight-leg trousers for New Year's Eve in a warm hotel.
  • One shoulder, dark denim. TOTEME's black one-shoulder top with dark wide-leg jeans and gold earrings.

How to build a party outfit around a top

One good pair of trousers or one skirt carries four or five tops through the season. In order of usefulness:

  • Black velvet trousers. A matte pile flatters anything that shines. Etro's are wide and fluid; Balmain's are straight and cotton-rich, sharper with a tucked-in top.
  • A silk-satin skirt. Midi for a cocktail party, maxi for black tie optional, with a matte top. Max Mara's black Camera maxi is draped from a high waist with a single slit; the house's stone silk slip skirt, on an elasticated waist, is the easy one under a black knit.
  • Tuxedo trousers. The office-party answer with a bow blouse, a camisole or a metallic knit, and the cleanest line under a corset. Alexander McQueen's are Japanese wool barathea with satin detailing.
  • Black or dark jeans. For dressy casual only, and with a dressier top than you think you need. Saint Laurent's wide-leg jeans are a washed black, dark enough for evening.
  • A bottom that is the statement. Then the top goes plain: Rabanne's draped navy velvet maxi skirt wants a black satin camisole, and Isabel Marant's champagne satin trousers want a black velvet or knit top.

Our guide to party shoes matches the heel to the hours you will stand. A high neck, a halter or a bare shoulder takes a statement earring; a bow or a jeweled collar wants a stud or nothing. Keep the bag small and on a short handle around sequins and lace; our evening bags edit has the options. Already own the top? Tell our AI stylist what it is and what the invitation says, and it will suggest the rest.

Fit, sizing and care: what to buy once

Sizing. Party tops are sized in several systems, and the listing is the authority. Zimmermann's own sizes run 0 to 3, X-Small to Large, but some retailers list it in US numbers, so check which one you are reading; Victoria Beckham lists UK sizes beside US ones, so a UK 8 is a US 4; Isabel Marant's Cevara tank is listed in French sizes with the US equivalent, a 36 being a US 4; Prada and Valentino often list Italian sizes. A bodysuit fits by torso length as much as bust, so tall women should check the torso measurement first.

Care. According to their listings, Maison Margiela's sequined knit can be machine washed, Rabanne's paillette top needs a specialist cleaner, its mock-neck satin top should be hand washed and never ironed, and Balenciaga's draped jersey top should not be washed at all. Store anything beaded flat: the Canadian Conservation Institute's note on beaded objects says beaded clothing should be laid flat rather than hung, because the weight strains seams and threads. Steam velvet from the inside without pressing the pile, and fold metallic knits so the shoulders do not stretch.

Buy once: a black satin camisole, a black velvet top or bodysuit, a black or ivory bow blouse and a sheer black blouse, all of which work under tailoring in January. Enjoy for a season: oversized paillettes, chainmail, a red velvet drape, a bow the size of a forearm.

The mistakes we see most: two shiny halves competing, the wrong bra under a halter or a sheer blouse, a cropped top over low-rise trousers, and a chain strap worn across sequins or lace.

How we chose

This edit treats the top as the piece that carries the outfit, so it is organized by fabric and shape, which decide the bottom half and the room. Everything is new, from a top luxury house sold on Vêtir, and was live when we chose it on October 20. We read each composition line rather than the product name, because a top sold as lamé or satin can be silk, viscose, acetate or polyester, and that changes the drape, the price and the care. We judged colors from the photographs, passed over pieces down to their last size or two, and put something under $1,000 in seven of the nine top edits.

Frequently asked questions

What tops are good for a holiday party?

A sequin or beaded top, velvet, a satin camisole, lace, a metallic knit, a sheer blouse over a camisole, a bow blouse or a corset. Choose one festive element and pair it with a matte bottom: velvet trousers, a satin skirt or black jeans, depending on the invitation.

Can I wear jeans and a nice top to a holiday party?

Yes, when the party is dressy casual, such as dinner at a friend's home; Emily Post lists nice jeans with a dressy top under dressy casual. Choose dark or black jeans with a properly dressy top, and switch to velvet trousers or a satin skirt for a cocktail party.

Can you wear a top and skirt to a black-tie event?

Emily Post's black-tie list names a floor-length gown, a dressy cocktail dress or your dressiest little black dress, and puts dressy separates under black tie optional. For black tie, wear a gown; for black tie optional, a floor-length skirt with a top in the same color works.

What do you wear under a sheer top?

A camisole in the blouse's color for an office party or a family dinner, a black bralette or a bodysuit for a late party. Check the listing first: some sheer blouses are partly lined.

What goes with a sequin top?

Something matte: black velvet trousers, wool tuxedo trousers, a matte maxi skirt or black jeans. Keep the shoes and bag plain and skip the necklace.
