What to Wear in London at Christmas: Dressing for Drizzle, Afternoon Tea and the Ballet

What to wear in London at Christmas: a long coat that copes with drizzle, leather boots on soles that grip wet stone, a small bag that closes, and one polished outfit for afternoon tea or the ballet that still works with those boots. London's December is damp rather than bitter: the Met Office's 1991–2020 averages for Greenwich give highs near 48°F, lows near 39°F and about ten days of measurable rain. Dense wool and a water-repellent trench do more here than down. The festive venues also publish rules that decide the outfit for you: Hyde Park Winter Wonderland admits only small bags, Somerset House asks skaters to avoid long scarves and long coats, and The Ritz does not allow jeans at afternoon tea.

Below: the weather, the 2026 dates and venue rules, the coat and the boots, then London winter outfits for each plan, from the lights to Christmas Day, which London spends without the Tube.

What to wear in London at Christmas: the weather in five numbers

The Met Office publishes no long-term averages for a station in the West End itself, so we use its Greenwich Observatory climate station, about six miles east, as the stand-in for central London. The figures are its 1991–2020 averages unless we say otherwise.

  • 48°F and 39°F. The average December high and low. November runs about 53°F and 43°F, January 47°F and 38°F, so a trip across the holidays needs one coat, not two.
  • About ten wet days. December has ten days with at least a millimeter of rain but only about two inches in all, less than half of the 4.38 inches the National Weather Service gives as Central Park's December normal. London rain comes often and lightly.
  • Six or seven frosty nights. You will feel them at an outdoor rink after dark or on an early walk in the park.
  • Fifty hours of sun for the whole month, well under two a day.
  • Seven hours and 49 minutes of daylight on the shortest day, Monday, December 21, according to Royal Museums Greenwich. On almost every day of the month the sun sets before 4pm.

So dress for damp (wool, water-repellent cloth, smooth leather rather than suede, a hood or a hat), for heat in the Tube and the stores, and for the early dark: a 3:30pm tea ends after sunset, so the outfit you wear to tea is usually the one you wear to see the lights.

The 2026 London Christmas calendar, and the rule behind each outfit

Few of these places have a dress code; their rules on bags, scarves and coats shape the outfit more.

The coat: wool for the cold days, a trench for the wet ones

A London coat has two jobs in December: keeping you warm on a 39°F evening, and getting you through a shower between the Tube and the door.

  • Dense cloth if you bring only one. Melton and beaver cloth are milled until the wool felts, and double-face wool is two cloths woven as one. In our experience all three shrug off a light shower better than a loosely woven, brushed cashmere, which takes up water and can stay damp through dinner.
  • Past the knee, to cover the dress you wore to tea while you stand outside for the lights.
  • A neck that closes, or a hood. Khaite's Romare has a high, sculptural collar; Dries Van Noten's navy coat is the classic British duffle, with a generous hood and toggles.
  • Room for a knit. Gabriela Hearst's double-breasted Tellus is cut in virgin wool with a relaxed fit for sweaters underneath, its listing says.

Also here: Max Mara's cashmere jersey coat and its robe coat in wool, alpaca and cashmere beaver cloth; Proenza Schouler's melton Alix, grommeted at the hem; Burberry's Kensington, a cashmere-blend trench with a throat latch; and Alexander McQueen's dark wool Wishbone. Our best winter coats edit goes deeper on cloth.

  • Navy, gray and burgundy. The navy duffle, a gray cashmere crewneck, charcoal flannel trousers, black knee boots and a burgundy bag.
  • Dark brown and cream. The robe coat over a cream roll-neck and ivory wool trousers, with burgundy loafers on a dry day.

When the forecast says rain: a quilted coat or a trench

For a week of showers, choose a coat made for water and wear a knit under it. Burberry's Chelsea is cotton and made in England, and its listing says it runs large and suggests a size down. The house's Darliston is a light quilted check coat, and its long nylon car coat is cut loose enough to belt over a sweater. Max Mara's trench is water-repellent wool-blend gabardine; Bottega Veneta's falls to mid-calf in water-repellent cotton. Prada's hooded nylon rain jacket folds into a pouch for a day bag, and Moncler's Hiengos is a hooded parka in water-repellent rainwear fabric. Shop every designer trench coat, or read our trench coat buying guide.

  • Navy and cream. The quilted Darliston over a cream cable knit, gray flannel trousers and black boots.

Boots for London: leather knee boots in town, rubber in the park

For Mayfair, Covent Garden and Knightsbridge you want smooth leather on a sole with grip, not rubber boots. Knee boots earn their place because so many London plans call for a skirt or a dress, and with opaque tights they keep the leg warm all evening.

  • Flat or low for walking. Givenchy's Pinch is a flat calfskin riding boot; Miu Miu's Bubble sits on a studded lug sole with a 40mm heel, about an inch and a half.
  • Rubber underfoot. Burberry lists a leather-and-rubber sole for its EKD boots, Dolce & Gabbana a rubber sole for its lace-ups, and Jimmy Choo sets its flat Lawton on rubber.
  • Check the calf. A riding boot without a zip has no give. Fuller calves are easier in a side zip, which Miu Miu, Burberry and Victoria Beckham list for the boots here; try any pair with the tights you will travel in.
  • One evening pair. Manolo Blahnik's Dispasa, black satin with gold flowers climbing the side, on a low block heel and a leather sole, is for the ballet with a car waiting, never for a wet pavement.
  • Black, gray and burgundy. Prada's buckled black knee boots, a gray Prince of Wales check dress, a cropped black tweed jacket and a burgundy bag.
  • Snake print with cream. Victoria Beckham's Maverick boots, which photograph in a natural snake print, with a cream knit dress and a cream coat.

For shaft measurements and more pairs, see the best knee-high boots or every designer knee-high boot.

Seeing the lights on Regent Street and Oxford Street

Regent Street's lights return from Thursday, November 5, when the street closes to traffic from 5pm to 9pm for the switch-on, according to Regent Street's announcement. Seeing them means walking slowly in a crowd after dark, often in drizzle, and stopping for photographs.

  • Light near the face. Night photographs swallow black on black; a light-gray coat, an ivory scarf or a red bag gives the picture something to hold.
  • A hood or a hat, not an umbrella. In a slow crowd, an open umbrella sits at everyone else's eye level.
  • A bag in front, closed, worn across the body where you can see it.
  • Gray and dark red. On a dry night, Burberry's light-gray Kensington cashmere trench, a black turtleneck, black trousers, black knee boots and Miu Miu's dark red quilted mini bag.

What to wear to Hyde Park Winter Wonderland

Winter Wonderland runs from Thursday, November 19 to Sunday, January 3, every day except Christmas Day, until 10pm. Its terms and conditions permit "only small handbags or small rucksacks," define small bags as "no larger than A4 size or standard handbags," and say all bags will be searched. A4 is about 8.3 by 11.7 inches, so a tote is out; the five bags below that list dimensions are all under 10 inches wide.

Expect queues and food eaten standing up, and wear flat boots and a coat you can stand around in: the organizer describes even its guided tour as 80 minutes of walking on uneven ground. If you book Bar Ice, its 20-minute sessions are held at 14°F (minus 10°C); the organizer lends coats and gloves but still advises wrapping up, so wear a thick knit.

  • Navy and burgundy. Burberry's navy nylon car coat, belted, over a gray roll-neck and black jeans, with black lug-sole boots and Prada's burgundy Cherie mini bag across the body.
  • Black with lava red. A black wool coat and black cashmere crewneck, black trousers tucked into flat riding boots, and Bottega Veneta's lava-red woven crossbody.

What to wear ice skating in London

Skate at Somerset House runs from November 11 to January 10, closes on December 25 and closes early on December 24 and 31. Its skating FAQ nearly dresses you: 45-minute sessions; no bags of any size on the rink (the first cloakroom item is free, then £2 each); gloves and thick socks; and nothing that could cause a trip hazard, naming long scarves and long coats. Skating goes on in the rain, when the FAQ suggests something waterproof and spare socks. Winter Wonderland's rink also runs 45-minute sessions and keeps bags, phones and cameras off the ice.

  • A jacket that stops at the hip, with a water-repellent shell for the rain sessions. Moncler's burgundy Castelnew has a detachable hood; Burberry's Bramford zips both ways, so it opens from the hem when you warm up.
  • Something on the legs that dries. Denim soaks up water if you sit down hard on a wet rink and stays cold; technical or stretch-wool trousers dry faster.
  • A short scarf or none. A snood, or a scarf tucked inside the jacket, meets the rule.
  • Burgundy and gray. The Castelnew with a gray turtleneck, black stretch trousers, black leather gloves and a gray beanie.
  • Moss and cream. Max Mara's moss-green hooded cropped down jacket, a cream roll-neck and ivory stretch trousers; its listing says the jacket machine-washes at 30°C.

What to wear to afternoon tea in London

Tea is where London still asks you to dress. The Ritz London's afternoon tea page says gentlemen must wear a jacket and tie and that jeans and sportswear are not permitted for women or men; the same code covers lunch and dinner in The Ritz Restaurant. Other hotels set their own rules.

Judge the outfit sitting down. Tea is a long, seated meal at a small table: you want a waist that does not bite, a hem that covers the knee when you sit, and sleeves clear of the cake stand. Our formula is a wool dress, a tweed or bouclé jacket that stays on, black opaque tights and knee boots. Emilia Wickstead's Rumi is made in the UK in a Prince of Wales check, its listing says, and her Thea adds a turtleneck and a full midi skirt to the same check. Several dresses here have short sleeves or none, which is why the jacket stays on; Thom Browne's tweed cardigan jacket has three-quarter sleeves that clear the teacups.

  • Black and white check. Emilia Wickstead's Thea, black tights, Givenchy's black riding boots and Alexander McQueen's cropped black tweed jacket, with coattail flaps at the back.
  • Ivory and charcoal. Valentino Garavani's ivory tweed jacket, piped in black, over Prada's charcoal check dress, black boots and Burberry's black Cotswolds mini bag.
  • Scarlet for December. Saint Laurent's scarlet tweed blazer over Dolce & Gabbana's black wool crêpe dress, with black knee boots.

What to wear to the Nutcracker or the theater in London

The Royal Ballet dances Peter Wright's The Nutcracker at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden from December 3 to January 13, about two hours and 20 minutes with one 30-minute interval. English National Ballet's Nutcracker plays the London Coliseum from December 17 to January 10 and runs about two hours. The Royal Opera House says there is no dress code, beyond covered feet and torso. Larger bags and backpacks go to its free cloakrooms, which open two hours before an evening show, and latecomers may wait in the foyer until a suitable break.

The free cloakroom changes the calculation: check the long coat and the umbrella, and wear something you want to be seen in at the interval. Our London answer is a velvet or satin skirt with a fine knit and knee boots, warm on the walk across the piazza. Our Nutcracker guide covers matinees and gala nights.

  • Velvet and silk. Dolce & Gabbana's black velvet pencil skirt, an ivory silk blouse, Manolo Blahnik's embellished satin boots and a small black bag.
  • Crimson silk, black cashmere. Isabel Marant's crimson Laren skirt in silk satin, gathered at the front, with a fine black turtleneck and black riding boots.
  • Aubergine, with a car. Maison Margiela's aubergine velvet maxi skirt, a black bodysuit and the satin boots; a floor-length hem soaks up a wet pavement, so keep it for a door-to-door night.

A museum day in South Kensington and Trafalgar Square

The V&A in South Kensington is free, open until 10pm on Fridays and closed from December 24 to 26. The National Gallery is free too, closed December 24 to 26 and January 1, and screens every visitor through a metal detector, with bags inspected and a £3 charge per cloakroom item. Carry a small crossbody that clears security fast, wear a coat you can fold over an arm and choose flat boots for the hard floors.

  • Gallery gray. A gray cashmere crewneck, charcoal wide trousers over Miu Miu's lug-sole knee boots and Burberry's light-gray cashmere trench.

Liberty, Harrods and a department-store day

Liberty's Tudor-style store on Great Marlborough Street opened in 1924, built, the store says, from the timbers of two warships, HMS Impregnable and HMS Hindustan, whose decks became its floors. Its six floors are built around three atriums, so an afternoon there is mostly stairs, indoors and heated; Harrods, in Knightsbridge, asks the same of your feet on a larger scale. Wear something that unbuttons rather than pulls over your hair, a boot you would walk a mile in, and a short-strapped bag with a zip.

  • Knightsbridge navy. A navy cashmere cardigan over a white shirt, gray flannel trousers, black knee boots and the navy duffle.
  • Soho red. A red cashmere crewneck, black trousers, black boots and a black wool coat, with Prada's burgundy Cherie mini bag.

Dinner in London

The Ritz Restaurant applies the same jacket-and-tie code as its tea. Elsewhere, reuse what you packed for tea and the ballet, the wool dress without its jacket or the velvet skirt with a silk blouse, plus one thing that catches candlelight: satin, a red bag or gold earrings.

  • Black and gold. Dolce & Gabbana's black wool crêpe dress, black tights, Jimmy Choo's flat Lawton boots and gold earrings.
  • Taupe satin and black. Victoria Beckham's gathered taupe satin skirt, a black cashmere turtleneck and black boots.

Christmas Day in London: plan to walk

On Friday, December 25 there is no Tube, Elizabeth line, Overground, DLR or tram service, according to Transport for London's published closures, and services finish early on Christmas Eve. The same list shows no Elizabeth line trains at all on Boxing Day and none between Paddington and Heathrow from December 26 to 30, so settle the airport run before you pack. Winter Wonderland, the Somerset House rink, the V&A and the National Gallery are closed too, so the day becomes lunch and a long walk in Hyde Park, Regent's Park or along the river.

This is the one day we pack rain boots for, because grass paths turn soft after rain. Moncler's Kickstream comes in whole European sizes only, 35 to 41, so if you are between sizes, go up and wear a thick sock. Burberry's listing says its ankle-high Marsh Stamp boots run small, and its Cavalier sets the house check on a canvas shaft above a rubber foot. Loewe's Storm reaches the knee in frosted, see-through rubber. Rinse off the mud and dry them away from the radiator, as the listings advise. More in our rain boots shop.

  • Navy and black. Dries Van Noten's navy duffle, a cream roll-neck and gray flannel trousers tucked into Moncler's black Kickstream boots, with Miu Miu's dark red mini bag.
  • Beige and check. Moncler's warm-beige Hiengos parka, hood up if it rains, over a cream cable knit and gray flannel trousers tucked into Burberry's check Cavalier boots.
  • Olive and honey. Moncler's olive Kickstream boots, cream jeans, a cream cable knit and Burberry's honey Chelsea coat.

What to pack for five days in London in December

  • One long coat in dense wool or a cashmere blend, or a quilted coat or trench plus a warm knit if the forecast is mild and wet.
  • Leather knee boots with grip, and a dressier pair only if the ballet is on the list.
  • Two wool dresses, or a dress and a velvet or satin skirt.
  • A tweed or bouclé jacket that stays on indoors.
  • Three fine knits, two pairs of trousers and black opaque tights.
  • Thick socks for the rink, leather gloves, a hat and a scarf short enough to tuck in.
  • A small bag that closes and fits inside A4, rain boots only for the parks, and a compact umbrella.

Give our AI stylist your dates, your bookings and the coat you are bringing, and ask it to plan an outfit for each day. If London is one stop on a longer trip, see what to wear in Paris in winter and what to wear in New York at Christmas.

What earns its keep after the trip, and what to leave at home

The pieces that pay for themselves are the ones London works hardest: a dense wool coat that reaches below the knee, leather knee boots on a rubber or lug sole, and a tweed jacket that goes over a dress at tea here and over jeans at home for years. Check rain boots, an aubergine velvet maxi and a scarlet blazer make this trip's photographs and then come out a few times a year, so buy them for love, not for the itinerary.

Leave at home a mountain-weight down parka, which looks out of place in a tearoom and the stalls when lows average 39°F; suede, which rain spots; a large tote, which Winter Wonderland turns away and the opera house sends to the cloakroom; and any floor-length hem you plan to walk in.

How we chose

Every coat in the first edit is wool, cashmere or a wool blend and reaches the knee or below; every piece in the second is a trench, raincoat or quilted coat in cotton, nylon, polyester or water-repellent wool gabardine. Three of the knee boots are flat or close to it, four have stacked, block or sculpted mid heels you can walk on, and the satin pair is for evenings only. We checked bags against Winter Wonderland's A4 limit wherever listings give dimensions, and chose skating jackets that end at the hip because Somerset House names long coats as a trip hazard. Every garment and boot was offered in at least three sizes when we last checked, on October 20, and we judged color from the photographs rather than the listings. The 70 pieces come from 27 houses, seven of them British: Burberry, Alexander McQueen, Victoria Beckham, Stella McCartney, Emilia Wickstead, Jimmy Choo and Manolo Blahnik. All are new; none is pre-owned.

Frequently asked questions

What should I wear in London in December?

Pack for damp rather than deep cold: a long, dense wool coat, or a quilted coat or trench if rain is forecast, leather knee boots on a sole that grips, fine knits, gloves, a hat and a short scarf, plus a wool dress or velvet skirt for tea and the ballet.

How cold is London at Christmas?

Mild but damp. Met Office averages for Greenwich give December a high near 48°F and a low near 39°F, with frost on six or seven nights and measurable rain on about ten days.

Do I need rain boots in London?

Not in the West End, where leather boots with a rubber or lug sole are enough. Pack them for long walks in the parks, or for Christmas Day, when there is no Tube.

Is there a dress code for afternoon tea in London?

At The Ritz, yes: no jeans or sportswear for women or men, and a jacket and tie for men. Other hotels set their own codes, so check when you book; a wool dress or skirt with a jacket and knee boots meets The Ritz's.

What should I wear to the Nutcracker at the Royal Opera House?

The Royal Opera House has no dress code. A velvet or satin skirt with a fine knit and knee boots sits comfortably between jeans and a gown; larger bags and backpacks go to the free cloakroom.

What should I wear to Winter Wonderland?

Flat, warm boots, a coat you can stand around in, gloves, a hat, and a small handbag or small rucksack no larger than A4, because the organizer's terms admit nothing bigger and all bags are searched.
