Men's New Year's Eve Outfits, From a Black-Tie Gala to a Beach at Midnight

Men's New Year's Eve outfits, in short: start with where you will be at midnight. For a black-tie gala, wear a black or midnight-blue tuxedo, a soft-collared white shirt, a bow tie you tied yourself and patent shoes. For dinner, a black or midnight suit with a dark tie, or a fine black roll-neck if the room is relaxed. When the invitation says festive, swap the plain jacket for one with texture or shine and keep everything around it black. At a club, a silk shirt under a leather or satin bomber. In the mountains, the same evening clothes under a long coat, with rubber-soled boots for the walk. On a Caribbean beach, an ivory dinner jacket over black trousers.
December 31, 2026 is a Thursday. The table below sorts the night by setting.

Tuxedo, velvet jacket or dark suit?
Three questions settle it. What does the invitation say? Black tie means a tuxedo, and our guide to black-tie events covers the rules. Where is the room? A hotel ballroom or a members' club leans formal; a friend's apartment does not. And how long is the night? For many men it is the longest evening of the year in one set of clothes, so cloth, fit and soles matter more than usual. Our men's holiday party outfits guide decodes every December dress code.
Black tie on New Year's Eve: a tuxedo built for midnight
Black tie on December 31 differs from black tie in March in its last two hours: a crowded dance floor and a glass raised at midnight. The tuxedo has to look as composed at 1 a.m. as it did at 8 p.m., and three choices make that happen.
Choose a cloth that recovers. Wool blended with mohair suits a long night. Mohair South Africa, the industry's own body, credits the fiber with an innate elasticity that helps garments hold their shape without creasing, and the blend has a quiet sheen of its own under low light. Brioni's peak-lapel tuxedo is 84% wool and 16% mohair, by its listing; Zegna's Centoventimila tuxedo is 52% wool and 48% mohair; and Tom Ford's Shelton is a wool and mohair-blend twill trimmed in grosgrain rather than satin.
Fit it for a raised glass. In the fitting room, lift your arm to shoulder height as if for a toast. If the whole jacket rises with it and the collar lifts off your neck, the armholes are cut too low for a night of dancing; a smaller, higher armhole lets the arm move without dragging the jacket up. Then sit down: the jacket should still close without pulling across the button.
Decide what happens when the jacket comes off. After midnight, plenty of jackets land on chair backs. A waistcoat keeps the waistband and the lower shirt front covered when that happens, which is why we would choose one over a cummerbund on this night. And tie the bow yourself: a self-tied bow can be pulled loose and left to hang open at 1 a.m., the one kind of undone that still looks deliberate, while a pre-tied bow can only look broken.
Buy once and keep: a black or midnight single-button tuxedo with peak lapels or a shawl collar, in wool or wool-mohair. Ours run from Canali's notch-lapel two-button version, the least formal and least expensive here, to Kiton's peak-lapel tuxedo. Brioni's and Kiton's arrive with the trouser hem left open for your tailor, according to their listings, so leave time for the alteration. More cuts are in our men's tuxedos.
Two black-tie New Year's Eve formulas
- The ballroom: black peak-lapel wool-mohair tuxedo, white piqué-front shirt with French cuffs, black silk satin bow tie, black grain de poudre waistcoat, patent oxfords.
- Midnight shawl: midnight-blue shawl-collar tuxedo, white dress shirt, black velvet bow tie, sterling silver cufflinks, patent oxfords on a rubber sole for the dance floor.

What to wear when a New Year's Eve invitation says "festive"
Emily Post's attire guide notes that a festive dress code is often the one chosen for holiday or New Year's parties, and reads it as cocktail attire with a seasonal touch. For men, its list is a seasonal sport coat or blazer in a color of your choice with trousers, a dress shirt or an open collar, and a festive tie.
What matters is what "seasonal" means on December 31. The tartan and holly reds of a week earlier read as the wrong party; New Year's Eve has its own palette of black, midnight, champagne, gold and silver, with burgundy and bottle green as accents. Texture does more than color: silk jacquard, brocade, an astrakhan-effect silk, an embroidered lapel. For the week before, see our men's Christmas outfits.
If the card says creative or festive black tie, keep the tuxedo's foundation and change one element. Debrett's suggests a normal black tie in place of the bow tie, or a glamorous waistcoat, among the variations a creative invitation allows; Emily Post's version adds a black shirt or a colored or patterned bow tie and cummerbund.
Then put the light in one place. If the jacket shines, the shirt is plain white or black and the shoes plain patent; if the shoes carry crystals, the jacket stays matte. Velvet is the softer route, and our holiday party guide covers it.
Festive New Year's Eve formulas
- Champagne: pale-gold silk dinner jacket, black tuxedo trousers, white shirt, black satin bow tie, black velvet loafers.
- Black in three textures: black astrakhan-effect silk jacket, black silk satin shirt buttoned to the neck with no tie, black tuxedo trousers, patent oxfords.
- Burgundy brocade: burgundy paisley brocade jacket with black lapels, a fine black roll-neck, black trousers, black patent loafers.
- The long tie: black jacquard dinner jacket, white shirt, black silk long tie, black waistcoat, patent oxfords.

Dolce & GabbanaMen's Silk Scarf and Shawl-Lapel Dinner Jacket$3,945
CanaliMen's Arrow-Pattern Dinner Jacket$2,450
Canali's gold jacket is silk in a large chevron weave with solid peak lapels; Tom Ford's is black silk with a crinkled, astrakhan-like surface; Canali's black arrow pattern and Brioni's jacquard keep the pattern black on black, and Valentino's polka dot is small enough to read as gray across a room; Alexander McQueen's double-breasted jacket puts all of its interest on embroidered lapels.
The New Year's Eve dinner: a dark suit for a long table
A New Year's Eve dinner is often a set menu with a fixed seating, which means three hours or more in a chair, seen from the chest up across a candlelit table. After dark, a black suit is entirely correct, and midnight navy is the alternative. Pick a cloth that holds a little light: Prada's black suit is 84% wool and 16% mohair, by its listing, and Loro Piana's International suit is woven from mohair to bring out its natural luster. Tom Ford's sharkskin and Zegna's tic-weave give a fine texture without reading as a pattern.
Plan for the chair. Unbutton a single-breasted jacket when you sit and fasten it again when you stand. Double vents, which most of these suits have, let the jacket fall either side of the seat instead of bunching behind you. Pleats help after the fifth course: Canali's suit has pleated-front trousers, according to its listing, and Zegna's Trofeo 600 evening suit has a deconstructed jacket that sits softly through a long meal.
Tie or no tie is the restaurant's call before it is yours, so ask when you book. If the answer is "jacket required", a fine roll-neck under the suit is the modern reading; if it is "elegant", wear the tie. See more cuts in our men's suits.
Three dinner formulas
- Black suit, white shirt, black silk knit tie, black patent loafers.
- Midnight sharkskin suit, white shirt, burgundy silk tie, black calf oxfords.
- Black mohair suit, fine black silk-blend roll-neck, black velvet loafers.

What to wear to a club or bar on New Year's Eve
A New Year's Eve bar is hot and crowded, and the coat check is at its busiest just after midnight. Dress for the room: silk and silk-cotton breathe where a chunky wool knit would cook you; Brunello Cucinelli's black roll-neck is finely knitted from silk and cotton, and Saint Laurent's striped silk satin shirt has the pointed collar the house calls the Yves.
If the walk from the car is short, let the jacket be your coat and skip the line. A leather or satin bomber reads as evening when everything under it is black, and it has the pockets that matter: Tom Ford's emerald satin bomber lists zipped pockets, a breast pocket and an inside pocket. Phone, card and ID go inside; a bag is one more thing to lose at midnight.
Dark colors hide a spilled toast, and calf leather or patent wipes clean where suede marks. Black on black works only with contrast of surface: satin against matte wool, leather against knit.
Three club formulas
- Black leather bomber, black silk satin shirt, black wool trousers, black leather Chelsea boots.
- Emerald satin bomber, black silk-cotton roll-neck, black trousers, black patent loafers.
- Black wool sweater embroidered with pearls and sequins, black trousers, black velvet loafers: the sweater is the statement, so nothing else needs to be.

What to wear to a New Year's Eve party at home
At a friend's apartment, dress one notch above what you expect the host to wear, never two. A dark suit with no tie and a roll-neck, or one of the festive dinner jackets above over dark trousers, covers almost every house party. The night is spent on sofas and in the kitchen, so soft tailoring and fine knits beat a structured jacket you will be itching to take off by eleven.
The host has more license: velvet slippers, a velvet or jacquard jacket and an open collar are the classic clothes for an evening at home.
- The guest: midnight suit, black cashmere roll-neck, black velvet loafers.
- The host: black jacquard dinner jacket, black trousers, white shirt open at the collar, black velvet slippers.
New Year's Eve in the mountains
In Aspen, NOAA's 1991–2020 climate normals put December 31 at a high of about 31°F and a low of about 9°F, so the walk to dinner and back happens well below freezing, while the dining room is warm. Wear your city evening clothes and change two things: the coat and the soles. Our guide to what to wear in Aspen covers the rest of the trip.
The coat must be longer than the jacket. Over a tuxedo or a suit, choose a coat whose hem falls well below the jacket's, so no band of jacket shows beneath it. A short shearling jacket is for a dark flannel suit and a short walk; for black tie, wear a long wool or wool-cashmere coat. Over black tie, Vêtir's stylists reach for black, charcoal or gray, so every coat here is one of the three; Balmain's long double-breasted coat even has a velvet collar. More in our edit of the best men's winter coats.
The soles must grip. Patent and leather soles are slippery on packed snow, and road salt leaves white tide marks on leather. Walk in rubber-soled boots: Loro Piana's Beinn Walk boots are shearling-lined with rubber soles, Ferragamo's Santo Chelsea boots sit on a treaded rubber sole, and Manolo Blahnik's Ambleside lace-ups are black leather on lugged rubber soles. For black tie, carry the patent shoes in a shoe bag and change at the coat check; with a dark suit, black Chelsea boots can stay on all night if the trousers break enough to cover the elastic. Our men's winter boots guide has more.
Two mountain formulas
- Black tie in the snow: midnight tuxedo, long black wool-cashmere coat, white silk scarf, black leather gloves, rubber-soled black Chelsea boots for the walk and patent oxfords for the room.
- The ski-town dinner: charcoal flannel suit, black cashmere roll-neck, black double-breasted shearling jacket, black lace-up boots on a lug sole.

New Year's Eve on the beach
The ivory dinner jacket is warm-weather black tie, and it has a geography. The Black Tie Guide, published by Gentleman's Gazette, traces it to vacationers dressing for tropical heat in the early 1930s and confines it to formal occasions in the tropics year-round and in America during the summer season. We read that as a yes to ivory at a New Year's Eve party in the Caribbean and a no in a US city, where December 31 is winter even when it is mild. Miami is the borderline case: the same NOAA normals put its December 31 low at about 62°F, and there we would wear a black or midnight tuxedo in a lightweight cloth.
The rest of warm-weather black tie barely changes. The same guide keeps the trousers black or midnight, prefers off-white, ivory or cream to stark white, and chooses a cummerbund over a waistcoat in the heat, because it covers less of the torso. Zegna's ivory jacket is tussah silk; Canali's shawl-collar jacket is mostly silk with wool and mohair; Alexander McQueen's has pleated lapels.
If the party is not black tie, a white double-breasted silk-linen blazer over an ivory silk shirt open at the collar, with black trousers, is dressier than linen alone. Velvet and patent do not like sand; if dinner ends on the beach, take the shoes off. For a week on the island around the party, see our guide to what to pack for St. Barths.
- Tropical black tie: ivory shawl-collar dinner jacket, black tuxedo trousers, white dress shirt, black bow tie, black cummerbund, black patent oxfords.
- Dinner on the terrace: white double-breasted silk-linen blazer, ivory silk shirt, black wool trousers, black velvet slippers.

Shoes for a night that ends after midnight
Match the shoe to the jacket. With a tuxedo, patent oxfords, or a highly polished calf wholecut such as Zegna's Vienna. With a festive jacket, velvet loafers: Christian Louboutin's Chambelimoc Night Strass carries a crystal tie pin across the vamp, and Manolo Blahnik's Janser is patent with an oversized velvet bow, modeled on the smoking slipper. At a house party, plain velvet slippers.
Check the soles before you check the shine. Leather soles slide on a polished ballroom floor and on an icy sidewalk. Brunello Cucinelli's patent oxfords and Ferragamo's Desio patent loafers are on rubber soles, and the Janser has rubber-panelled soles, by their listings; for a leather-soled pair, ask a cobbler to add a thin rubber half-sole before the night. Wear new shoes around the house for an evening or two first: a heel that rubs at 9 p.m. is a blister by midnight.
Sizing differs by house. Tom Ford's patent oxfords fit slightly small, and the listing suggests half a size up; Zegna's Vienna is listed as true to size; Louboutin's Night Strass is listed in European sizes with US equivalents (a 40 is a US 7); Manolo Blahnik's pairs here are listed in UK sizes, and a UK number is lower than the US number for the same foot, so convert before you order. More pairs in our men's loafers.

The finishing kit: shirt, bow tie, waistcoat and a white silk scarf
The shirt for black tie is white with a soft collar; Debrett's specifies a soft-collared white or cream shirt. Zegna's piqué evening shirt has a spread collar and French cuffs, so it needs cufflinks; Givenchy's collarless tuxedo shirt, with a plastron front and hidden buttons, is for creative black tie only and is worn with no tie at all.
Brioni's black silk satin bow tie is a self-tie, by its listing; Tom Ford's velvet bow tie gives a plain black or midnight tuxedo a second texture. Saint Laurent's waistcoat has satin-covered buttons and an adjustable back belt, and is cut in the same grain de poudre as the house's tuxedo jacket above. Wear a cummerbund instead only if your jacket is single-breasted and will stay on.
The white silk scarf earns its place on the walk in: worn long under a dark overcoat, it keeps the coat's wool off the shirt collar and frames the bow tie when the coat is open. Tom Ford's is silk satin with frayed ends. For cufflinks, pick one metal and match your watch; David Yurman's sterling cable pair suits black or midnight. Browse more in men's ties and bow ties.

In the twelve months to September 2026, all ten requests to our AI stylist that mentioned New Year's Eve arrived in December 2025, which is late if a tuxedo needs hemming. Tell our AI stylist where you will be at midnight and what is already in your closet, and it will build the rest of the outfit around them. How we chose
We organized this edit by where midnight happens, because one man may need a tuxedo, a dinner suit and rubber-soled boots in the same week. Tuxedos have silk-faced lapels on wool or wool-mohair, and all but one are peak or shawl. Dinner suits are black or midnight. Festive jackets carry their shine in the cloth or the lapel, never in a novelty print. Outerwear is black, charcoal or gray: long coats for black tie, short shearling for a suit. Beach jackets are ivory or white, with black trousers alongside. We read each shoe's sole and sizing system on its listing; 49 of the 63 pieces come in four or more sizes; and where a listing's color name disagreed with its photograph (a "copper" jacket that is pale gold), we went by the photograph. Prices run from a few hundred dollars for a bow tie to five figures for shearling.
Frequently asked questions
What should a man wear on New Year's Eve?
Dress for where you will be at midnight: a tuxedo at a black-tie gala, a black or midnight suit at dinner, a festive dinner jacket with black trousers when the card says festive, and a silk shirt under a bomber at a club.
Do you have to wear a tuxedo to a black-tie New Year's Eve party?
Yes. Black tie means a tuxedo. A dark suit, with a white shirt and a conservative tie, is acceptable only when the invitation says black tie optional.
What does festive attire mean for men on New Year's Eve?
Cocktail dressing with a seasonal touch: a jacket in a color or texture of your choice, trousers, a dress shirt or open collar, and a festive tie if you like. On New Year's Eve that touch is black, midnight, gold or champagne in silk jacquard, brocade or velvet, not Christmas tartan.
Can a man wear a white dinner jacket on New Year's Eve?
Somewhere tropical, yes. The Black Tie Guide keeps the ivory dinner jacket for formal occasions in the tropics year-round and in America in summer, so on December 31 we would wear one in the Caribbean and a black or midnight tuxedo in any US city, Miami included.
Can men wear sequins or velvet on New Year's Eve?
Yes, in one piece at a time. A velvet or jacquard dinner jacket, a sweater with sequin embroidery or a pair of crystal-trimmed velvet loafers works when everything around it is plain black or white.
What shoes go with a tuxedo on New Year's Eve?
Black patent oxfords, or a highly polished black calf wholecut. Velvet loafers or slippers suit a festive or at-home evening. If you will dance or walk on ice, choose a rubber sole or have one added.
