What to Wear in Aspen This Winter: Town, Mountain and Dinner

What to wear in Aspen in winter comes down to three facts. The town sits at 7,908 feet, December and January nights average about 10°F, and the sun is strong even when the air is cold. So pack a long down or shearling coat that covers your hips, boots with a rubber lug sole for brick sidewalks and packed snow, fine cashmere turtlenecks to layer under everything, and wraparound sunglasses. For dinner, choose velvet, knit or leather with boots rather than bare legs and stilettos.
Below: Aspen's weather month by month, what to wear in town, on the mountain and at dinner, how to handle the holiday weeks, and a five-night packing list, with pieces from Moncler, Brunello Cucinelli, Max Mara, The Row and more.
What to wear in Aspen, month by month
The figures below are NOAA's 1991–2020 climate normals for its Aspen weather station, listed as Aspen 1SW, which sits a little above town at about 8,175 feet (NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information), rounded to the nearest degree and inch. They are averages, so a cold snap can go well below them.
| Month | Average high | Average low | Average snowfall | What it means for your suitcase |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| November | 42°F | 19°F | 21 in | Opening week: a wool coat by day, down at night |
| December | 32°F | 10°F | 28 in | Holiday weeks: long down coat, lug soles, gloves and a hat every day |
| January | 32°F | 10°F | 28 in | The coldest stretch: a merino base layer under your knits |
| February | 35°F | 13°F | 28 in | Much like January, with longer afternoons |
| March | 43°F | 20°F | 27 in | Spring skiing: a vest by day, still a real coat at night |
| April | 50°F | 27°F | 21 in | Closing weeks: layers you can peel off by lunchtime |
Two things the table does not show. The first is the daily swing: in every one of these months, the average drop from afternoon high to overnight low is about 22 to 23 degrees, so an outfit that is right for lunch on a sunny deck is wrong for the walk home from dinner. The second is the sun. The Aspen Chamber Resort Association counts an average of almost 300 days of sunshine a year, and the World Health Organization notes that UV levels rise with altitude and that fresh snow increases exposure. Wear wraparound sunglasses in town, not only on the mountain.
As for the season, Aspen Mountain and Snowmass open on Thanksgiving, November 26, 2026, and Aspen Highlands and Buttermilk on December 12. Those are the resort's announced dates, as reported by The Aspen Times, and Aspen Mountain is scheduled to close on April 18, 2027, conditions allowing.
Aspen outfits for town: the coat does the work
Aspen is a walking town. The Aspen Chamber notes that most hotels, shops and restaurants are within comfortable walking distance, and the Roaring Fork Transit Authority runs free buses around town and as far as Snowmass. In practice that means time on foot and at bus stops after dark, which makes the coat the most important thing you pack.
- Length: mid-thigh or longer. A long coat closes the gap between sweater and boot, which is where the cold gets in when you sit on a bench or wait at a crossing.
- Hood: ideally trimmed, to keep snow off your hair and the wind off your neck.
- Fill: down for the coldest nights, shearling for dry and bright days, and a cashmere coat only for car-to-door evenings or with a down vest underneath.
Moncler's Leersies, a belted long down coat with a shearling-trimmed hood, is the Aspen coat in a single piece. Brunello Cucinelli's knee-length hooded down coat in a textured brown wool blend looks like tailoring and is filled like a puffer. Max Mara's belted hooded puffer coat, filled with synthetic insulation rather than down, is the easiest way to look tidy in a puffer, and it is reversible.
- Daytime in town: a chocolate long down coat, an ivory cashmere turtleneck, dark straight jeans and suede lug-sole hiking boots.
- Tonal camel: a camel cashmere wrap coat over a tobacco turtleneck and camel wool trousers, with brown lug-sole Chelsea boots, for an evening that goes car to door.
- Black on black: a black belted puffer coat, a black cashmere turtleneck, leather trousers and lug-sole knee boots.

Boots for Aspen's brick malls and packed snow
Downtown Aspen's pedestrian malls were completed in 1976 and paved with bricks brought in from St. Louis, as the American Planning Association records. Brick under packed snow is uneven and can be slick, so leave stilettos and smooth leather soles at home and choose the boot by its sole.
- Sole: rubber, with deep lugs. This matters more than the upper.
- Heel: flat or a low block. The Miu Miu knee boots below have a 55mm (just over two-inch) block heel on a lug sole, which is about the limit for a snowy sidewalk.
- Upper: leather or nylon on slushy days; suede when it is cold and dry.
- Lining: shearling for evenings outdoors; an unlined boot is fine for days spent walking between warm shops.
The Row's Hike boots and Bottega Veneta's Lug hiking boot handle the malls by day. Lug-sole knee boots from Miu Miu or Bottega Veneta go to dinner over opaque tights. For the science of grip on ice, see the boot section of our après-ski outfits guide, and browse more cold-weather boots.

Aspen winter style: fine knits under everything
With a swing of more than 20 degrees between afternoon and night, and warm shops and restaurants in between, the right Aspen layer is thin and warm rather than thick. A fine-gauge cashmere or cashmere-silk turtleneck sits under a down coat without bulk, looks finished when the coat comes off, and works under a sleeveless knit dress at dinner. Choose a neck tall enough to fold over twice: the double layer at the throat does a scarf's job on a short walk.
- Buy four colors: ivory, a brown (walnut, tobacco or chocolate), black, and one dark jewel tone such as burgundy.
- Mind the gauge: fine rib and cashmere-silk are for layering; chunky cable is for the lodge.
- On ski days, add a merino base layer under the turtleneck rather than a second sweater.
From Gabriela Hearst's rib-knit Peppe to The Row's oversized Lizzy, these are the turtlenecks we would pack.

On the mountain and at après
Aspen is unusual in that you can ski from town. The Silver Queen Gondola rises directly from downtown to the summit of Aspen Mountain, where the Sundeck sits at 11,212 feet, more than 3,000 feet above the streets you left, according to Aspen Snowmass. Dress for the summit rather than the street; it is higher, more exposed and usually colder. The same page describes Aspen Mountain, known locally as Ajax, as best suited to intermediate and expert skiers because of its limited beginner terrain, and one lift ticket covers all four mountains, which matters if your group is mixed.
For the technical layers (shell, insulated pants, helmet, goggles), use our ski trip packing list. For the drink afterward, whether on the patio at Ajax Tavern by the gondola or back at your hotel, our après-ski guide covers what to keep on and what to change.
Aspen dinner outfits: velvet, knit and leather
"Going to Aspen next week, need dinner outfits" is one of the requests our AI stylist has received, and the brief behind it is simple: warm enough for the walk, polished enough for the room. The answer is texture rather than bare skin. Velvet, a fine knit or leather holds warmth on the walk and still reads as evening wear, and all three work with the lug-sole boots the sidewalks demand.
- Velvet turtleneck: a black velvet turtleneck mini, opaque black tights, lug-sole knee boots and a long down coat.
- Burgundy velvet trousers: wide-leg velvet with an ivory cashmere turtleneck, brown lug-sole Chelsea boots and a shearling coat.
- Knit on knit: a camel sleeveless knit midi over a walnut rib turtleneck, with knee boots and a camel wrap coat.
- Olive velvet: straight olive velvet trousers with a black fine turtleneck, black lug-sole Chelsea boots and a long black down coat.
- Leather and shimmer: brown leather straight-leg trousers, a shimmering cashmere-silk turtleneck and a belted puffer coat.
Keep jewelry close to the body (studs, a chain under the turtleneck, a cuff over a glove) so it survives coats and scarves. Khaite's velvet and leather trousers, Valentino Garavani's burgundy velvet and Alaïa's velvet turtleneck mini are the pieces we would build dinner around. Each Aspen restaurant sets its own dress code, so ask when you reserve.

Aspen during the holidays, from Thanksgiving to New Year's
The season's first big weekend is Thanksgiving, with Aspen Mountain and Snowmass opening on November 26. If you are coming for Christmas or New Year's Eve, the dinner formulas above work with one upgrade: swap the knit for sequins or a metallic knit under the long coat, and keep the lug-sole boots, because you will still be walking on snow at midnight. Our New Year's Eve outfits guide has the party pieces; add the coat and boots from this page.
Accessories for altitude
- Wraparound sunglasses, every day and in town too. A wraparound shape blocks light from the sides as well as the front.
- Two pairs of gloves: leather for town and dinner, knit cashmere for errands or layering under ski gloves.
- Earmuffs or a beanie: earmuffs for evenings when your hair is done; a cashmere beanie for daytime.
- A wide cashmere scarf: wrap it high over a turtleneck for the walk; it doubles as a shawl in an overheated restaurant.
Our guide to the best designer gloves covers linings and sizing, and you can browse every pair of designer gloves on Vêtir.

- Two pairs of daytime trousers (dark jeans, wool trousers) and one pair of velvet or leather trousers.
- Two dinner looks: a knit or velvet dress with opaque tights, and a trouser look.

What not to pack for Aspen
- Stilettos and leather-soled boots. Brick and packed snow punish both.
- A wool coat as your only coat in December or January. With average lows near 10°F, evenings call for down or shearling.
- Cotton as a base layer. It holds sweat, and wet cotton stays cold; merino is the better choice for ski days.
- One heavy sweater instead of two fine ones. Thin layers handle the daily temperature swing and warm restaurants far better.
- Untreated suede on slushy days. Save it for cold, dry ones.
- Sunglasses that leave the sides open. At altitude, a wraparound shape does more.
How we chose
- Houses: top luxury houses only, led by outerwear specialists (Moncler, Brunello Cucinelli, Max Mara, The Row) and cashmere houses for knitwear.
- Construction: down, synthetic insulation or shearling for the warm coats, a hood where possible, and a rubber lug sole on every boot.
- Fabric: cashmere, cashmere-silk and wool for knits; velvet, leather and knit for dinner, because they add warmth instead of losing it.
- Price: roughly $300 to $12,500; the middle half of the edit costs between about $950 and $2,800.
- Availability: all 36 pieces here were live on Vêtir at our late-September 2026 check, and each module backfills a sold-out pick with the closest live match.
- Fit notes: size coats to go over a sweater, and check that boot shafts clear the trousers you plan to wear with them.
Frequently asked questions
What should I wear in Aspen in December?
Plan for average highs near 32°F and lows near 10°F. Pack a long down or shearling coat with a hood, lug-sole boots, fine cashmere turtlenecks, a merino base layer for ski days, gloves, a beanie or earmuffs, and wraparound sunglasses.
How cold does Aspen get in winter?
NOAA's 1991–2020 normals for Aspen put the average December and January low at about 10°F and the average high at about 32°F. Individual nights can be far colder, and the summit of Aspen Mountain is more than 3,000 feet higher than town.
What do people wear to dinner in Aspen?
Dark velvet, knit dresses with opaque tights, leather or velvet trousers with a fine turtleneck, lug-sole boots and a long coat. The dress code is the restaurant's call, not the town's, so confirm it with the booking.
Do I need snow boots in Aspen?
You need boots with a rubber lug sole. Hiking-style boots, lug-sole Chelsea boots and lug-sole knee boots handle town; full snow boots are worth it for deep snow and long days outdoors.
What should I wear in Aspen if I don't ski?
The town wardrobe on this page: a long coat, lug-sole boots, fine knits, and velvet or knit for dinner. Add a hip-length puffer and a Fair Isle sweater for an afternoon on a slopeside terrace.
Do you need sunglasses in Aspen in winter?
Yes. UV exposure rises with altitude and fresh snow reflects it, so wear wraparound sunglasses that block UV-A and UV-B, in town as well as on the mountain.
