What to Wear in Tulum: Beach Clubs, Cenotes, the Ruins and New Year's Eve

What to wear in Tulum between Thanksgiving and March: clothes for warm, humid days in the mid-80s and evenings that drop into the mid-60s, chosen for the six settings a Tulum trip moves through. Pack a beach-club swimsuit that can sit at a lunch table, a plain one-piece for the cenotes, where sunscreen and repellent are often not allowed in the water, crochet or a sarong for the walk from the day bed to the bar, and a wide-brimmed hat for the ruins. Add flat sandals that fasten at the ankle for cycling the beach road, a long linen or ramie dress with sleeves for dinner under the trees, where mosquitoes are part of the setting, and something with fringe or shine for New Year's Eve that you can dance in on sand.

Below: the winter weather, sargassum and mosquitoes, an outfit for each part of the trip, a seven-night packing list, and seventy pieces from Zimmermann, Bottega Veneta, ALAÏA, Isabel Marant and 27 other houses.

What to wear in Tulum: the winter weather, sargassum and mosquitoes

Mexico's national weather service, the SMN, keeps a station in Tulum itself (number 23025), and its 1991–2020 climate normals for that station describe a winter that is warm by day and cooler at night. Converted from Celsius and rounded:

MonthAverage high / lowRainWhat it changes
November86°F / 67°Fabout 6 rain days, 3.6 inThe wettest month of the season: quick-drying fabrics, no suede on the beach road
December84°F / 66°Fabout 4 rain days, 1.7 inA long sleeve for dinner outdoors
January84°F / 65°Fabout 6 rain days, 2.4 inThe coolest nights: a light knit or linen jacket after dark
February85°F / 66°Fabout 3 rain days, 1.6 inDrier than January and still mild: a good month for a bike day
March87°F / 69°Fabout 3 rain days, 1.3 inThe warmest days of the season: see the ruins at opening time

The gap between day and night, about 18 to 19 degrees on average, is the number that changes the suitcase. A dress that is right at a beach club at 2 p.m. can feel thin at a table under the trees at 9, so every dinner look below has a sleeve, a long skirt or a layer. The sea stays warm: NOAA Coral Reef Watch's long-term monthly averages for Quintana Roo's coastal waters run from about 82°F in November to 79°F from January to March.

Sargassum, the brown seaweed that washes onto Caribbean beaches, is seasonal. In a February 2025 release, Quintana Roo's state government, citing the Mexican Navy, put its cycle on the state's coast at April to October. The University of South Florida's Optical Oceanography Lab, which tracks the blooms by satellite, said in its September 30, 2026 outlook that amounts would keep falling until possibly November, with beaching continuing but less severe than in summer. Winter is no guarantee: in a bulletin dated January 5, 2026, the lab expected beaching on the Mexican Caribbean coast, which it called unusually early, and January 2026 set a record for the month in every region it tracks except the eastern Atlantic. Read the lab's latest monthly outlook before you book a beachfront room, and pack one swimsuit you would happily wear at a pool club: if seaweed closes the water in front of your hotel, the day moves to a pool or a cenote.

Mosquitoes are the other planning point. The CDC's travel health page for Mexico lists dengue and Zika as risks spread by mosquito bites, notes a higher chikungunya risk in Mexico, and advises covering exposed skin with long-sleeved shirts, long pants and hats. Our stylists read that as a dress code for jungle restaurants and cenote mornings: a loose long-sleeved linen shirt, a maxi dress or wide trousers.

Tulum outfits for the beach clubs

A beach-club day along the hotel zone starts on a day bed in late morning, moves to lunch a few feet back from the sand, and runs on to music through the afternoon. The look is natural colors and hand-done textures: ivory crochet, olive, chocolate, raw raffia. Plan the swimsuit and cover-up as one outfit, because you will wear both for six hours.

At lunch the table hides everything below the waist, so the neckline does the work: a halter, a bandeau or a sweetheart with straps reads as a top once a skirt goes on, and a string bikini does not. Bottega Veneta's olive one-piece is trimmed with braids along the halter straps and edges, a detail that does the job of jewelry. ALAÏA's white suit is gathered at the halter neck and ties at the waist. Valentino Garavani's chocolate-and-beige polka-dot one-piece is lined, per its listing, which matters under a pale crochet cover-up.

  • Olive and ivory: Bottega Veneta's olive one-piece under Zimmermann's fringed crochet tank and matching fringed skirt, with flat raffia sandals and a natural raffia crossbody.
  • Chocolate and cream: Valentino Garavani's polka-dot suit under Zimmermann's ivory crochet midi dress, which has a polo collar and a detachable lining.
  • Black and gold: Isabel Marant's Idoya, a black trikini printed with gold dots and finished with bronze beads, under Max Mara's white broderie anglaise Bermuda shorts, with Gianvito Rossi's gold thong sandals.

Open crochet catches on wicker and rattan furniture, so sit on a towel in your best piece. For more cuts, browse all designer swimwear.

Match the cover-up to the distance. A sarong tied at the hip is enough for the walk to the bar, a crochet dress or set is what you sit down to lunch in, and a crocheted T-shirt over a bikini top is the simplest of all. Missoni's crochet cover-up, in the house zigzag with billowing sleeves, a mini hem and a bare back, is the one for lunch. Etro's voile sarong ties at the side; Jacquemus's Paréo is a stretch-muslin midi skirt with a front slit; Bottega Veneta's crocheted cotton T-shirt, striped in navy and ivory, has a ribbed crewneck. Zimmermann's Indra tank and skirt are crocheted from cotton in an open gauge and finished with fringe, so they work as a set over a swimsuit or apart at dinner. More sarongs and kaftans are in our cover-ups edit.

What to wear to the cenotes

The cenotes, the freshwater sinkholes in the forest inland from Tulum, have rules that change what you wear. The Quintana Roo daily Por Esto reported in March 2026 that most cenotes in the state do not let you in with ordinary sunscreen, insect repellent or body creams, because they contaminate the water; that many require a shower first; and that in several a life jacket is compulsory even if you can swim. Rules vary from one cenote to the next, so check at each ticket office, and dress for three consequences.

  • Sun without sunscreen. Arrive in a long-sleeved shirt or a cover-up with sleeves, plus a hat, and take them off at the shower.
  • Mosquitoes without repellent. Put clothes between you and the insects until you swim, and plan the cenote for the morning, before the day's first application of sunscreen and repellent.
  • A swimsuit that stays put. Choose a one-piece with straps over the shoulders or a high neck: ALAÏA's black ribbed suit, cut close with a cutout at the waist, TOTEME's ecru scoop-neck, Pucci's light blue suit with crossed straps at the back, or Burberry's ivory Sorcha with its square neck. Leave the bandeau and the trikini for the beach club.

Wet wooden stairs and limestone steps call for rubber sandals that buckle behind the heel rather than slides. Prada's black Monolith sandals have a buckled strap and a lug sole, and Valentino Garavani's blush jelly sandals an adjustable ankle strap. Leave fine jewelry at the hotel: a ring dropped into a cenote is gone. Our cenote outfit: ALAÏA's black ribbed one-piece, an oversized white linen shirt buttoned at the wrists, Prada's black rubber sandals and a white nylon bucket hat that folds into a pocket.

What to wear to the Tulum ruins

The walled Maya city on the cliff above the sea is one of Mexico's busiest archaeological sites. In early 2025, INAH, the national institute that runs it, put its traffic at more than 3,000 visitors a day, the third highest of any pre-Columbian site in the country after Chichén Itzá and Teotihuacan. It sits inside the Parque del Jaguar, a park of 2,913 hectares, and a February 2025 INAH bulletin explains that you can cross the park on foot, on a rented bike or in electric vehicles on set routes. INAH lists the archaeological zone's hours as 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with last entry at 3:30 p.m.

Go at opening, the coolest hour, and dress for walking in heat.

  • A hat with a real brim. A capeline or a wide fedora shades the neck and shoulders, which a baseball cap does not. If you are cycling there, wear one that ties: Miu Miu's wide-brimmed poplin bucket hat has side laces, and Etro's straw visor ties at the back.
  • Breathable sleeves. A loose linen or cotton shirt over a tank shades the arms on a long walk in the sun.
  • Caged or closed shoes. Fisherman sandals with an ankle strap, or clean sneakers, beat thongs on uneven, dusty paths.

Our ruins outfit: a white linen shirt over Max Mara's broderie anglaise Bermuda shorts, The Row's ivory fisherman sandals, Chloé's raffia capeline hat, whose brim is hand-embroidered with the house signature, and a crossbody bag so both hands stay free. For more brims, see all designer hats.

Bikes on the beach road: what to wear on two wheels

A bicycle is the easy way to cover Tulum's short distances: between town and the beach, along the road behind the hotels and beach clubs, and through the Parque del Jaguar, where INAH notes that bikes can be rented. Riding changes three things about an outfit.

  • Shoes need a back. Slides and thongs slip off a pedal. The Row's ivory fisherman sandals buckle at the ankle on a rubber sole, Miu Miu's tan raffia-and-leather pair has an adjustable ankle strap, and Bottega Veneta's Jack fastens with hook-and-loop straps at the back and across the foot. More styles are in our flat sandals edit.
  • Hems need limits. A wrap skirt opens in the wind and a full maxi can catch in the chain. Shorts, a straight midi skirt or a knee-length dress are easier.
  • The bag goes across the body. A basket bounces and a tote slides off the shoulder; a small crossbody or belt bag, worn in front, stays put.
  • Navy stripe and red: Bottega Veneta's navy-striped crocheted cotton T-shirt with white Bermuda shorts, TOTEME's red leather T-strap slingbacks and ALAÏA's woven heart-shaped crossbody on its black strap.
  • Black and natural: a black swimsuit under a white shirt, black Proenza Schouler fisherman sandals, and Khaite's raffia Augustina, trimmed in black.

Size the bag for a phone, sunglasses, a card and some cash. Christian Louboutin's striped crochet-raffia Bettina mini is about 7.7 inches wide and converts to a clutch for dinner, per its listing, and Isabel Marant's cognac Skano belt bag has an adjustable strap. Tulum dinner outfit: open-air restaurants under the trees

Many of Tulum's best-known restaurants are open-air, built into the jungle or onto the sand, lit low, with floors of sand, gravel or decking. That asks for four things a city dinner does not.

  • Coverage. Mosquitoes, and nights that average the mid-60s in December and January, both point to long sleeves, a long skirt or a layer.
  • Fabric that breathes. Linen, ramie and cotton stay comfortable on a humid evening. Silk shows perspiration; a silk-linen blend, such as Zimmermann's Ascent or Proenza Schouler's Sybella, is the compromise.
  • A hem that clears the ground. Floor-length is fine; a train collects sand.
  • Shoes for soft ground. A narrow heel sinks into sand and catches between deck boards. Wear a flat, an espadrille or a wedge.

The two dresses we would build the week around: Zimmermann's ivory Aster, in 100 percent ramie with embroidered sleeves, elasticated cuffs and a detachable belt, and Gabriela Hearst's Ranya, a linen twill maxi with sculpted puff sleeves and a corseted bodice, in an ivory watercolor-flower print or in Bordeaux. TOTEME's long-sleeved ivory column is the quiet option; Isabel Marant's Samsha, with long dolman sleeves and shimmering embroidery at the shoulder, the dressier one.

  • Ivory and turquoise: Zimmermann's ramie Aster with Valentino Garavani's turquoise suede espadrille wedges, which tie at the ankle.
  • Bordeaux and gold: Gabriela Hearst's Bordeaux Ranya with Gianvito Rossi's slender gold leather sandals.
  • Black paisley: Zimmermann's Ascent, a long-sleeved black rose-paisley linen and silk maxi, with ALAÏA's taupe suede wedge thongs.

An espadrille wedge spreads your weight over sand and decking, and an ankle strap keeps it on when the floor is uneven. Manolo Blahnik's Espadrahi wedges buckle at the ankle, and Stella McCartney's Elyse has criss-cross straps on a rope wedge. For flat ground, Prada's ivory crochet espadrilles and ALAÏA's citron fishnet Mary Janes.

What to wear for New Year's Eve in Tulum

New Year's Eve in Tulum is less a dinner than a long night out, often in the open air, at beach clubs, hotels and in the jungle. Zamna's own site announces a ten-day season in Tulum for the festival's tenth anniversary, from December 31, 2026, to January 10, 2027, and Day Zero, Damian Lazarus's party in the jungle outside town, lists January 9, 2027, for its return. Whatever the invitation, plan for heat at the start and a cooler night by the end.

  • Shine with air in it. Open constructions let a humid night through and still catch candlelight. Missoni's gold dress is crocheted with fine metallic threads; Rabanne's mini skirt is articulated gold-tone metal links.
  • Movement. Casablanca's white crochet mini ends in fringe, ALAÏA's ivory open-knit midi falls into tassels from the hips, and Zimmermann's Valiant has a silk cape overlay with fringe.
  • A hem that stays clean. Jungle venues are dirt, sand or decking underfoot, so a mini or midi comes home in better shape than floor length, and a flat or a wedge stays upright where a stiletto sinks.
  • Something for 2 a.m. A long sleeve, or a light shirt over the shoulders, for the hours after midnight.

Among the beach and resort requests typed into our AI stylist is "Style outfits for a bachelorette in Tulum." The party-night formula carries over: put the bride in Casablanca's white fringed crochet or Zimmermann's pale-butter silk Aster maxi, beaded at the neck with an open back that ties, and the group in gold, from Missoni's metallic crochet to Rabanne's chainmail, all on flat sandals or wedges.

What to pack for Tulum: a seven-night list

This list assumes two beach-club days, a cenote morning, the ruins, a bike day and four dinners, one of them a party.

  • Swimwear (4): two beach-club one-pieces, one plain one-piece with shoulder straps for the cenotes, and a bikini.
  • Cover-ups (3): a crochet dress or set, a sarong, and an oversized white linen shirt that doubles as sun protection.
  • Day clothes (3): Bermuda shorts or a straight skirt for the bike, a tank and a crochet T-shirt.
  • Dinner (3): two long dresses with sleeves and one dressier piece for the party night.
  • Layer (1): a light knit or linen jacket for January evenings.
  • Shoes (4): rubber sandals with a back strap, flat sandals that fasten at the ankle, espadrille wedges and a dinner flat.
  • Accessories: a wide-brimmed hat, a hat that folds or ties, a crossbody or belt bag, a raffia tote and sunglasses.

Leave at home: suede that has to cross the beach road in the rain, stilettos, and anything that needs ironing. For fitting a week into one bag, see our guide to packing efficiently for travel; for a broader warm-weather wardrobe, our resort wear guide; and for a trip that also takes in Miami or the Caribbean, our beach vacation outfits for winter sun.

Fit and care for a humid week

Check three things at home before you pack.

  • The cenote suit. Raise both arms above your head, as you would on a ladder or pulling on a life jacket; if the neckline slips or the legs ride, choose another suit for that morning. Swim sizes differ by house: French for ALAÏA and Isabel Marant, 1 to 5 for Versace, letters for Pucci and Burberry, US numbers for Bottega Veneta and TOTEME.
  • The hat. Brimmed hats are sized by head circumference: Dior's large-brim straw comes in 56 to 59 centimeters, and Valentino Garavani lists its fedora in centimeters with US hat sizes. Measure just above the ears; a loose hat leaves on the first gust or the first stretch of beach road.
  • The dinner dress. Linen and ramie have almost no give, and Gabriela Hearst's Ranya is corseted at the waist by design, so fit it to the waist and bust: a size up gapes rather than relaxes.

Humidity does the rest. Rinse swimwear in fresh water and dry it in the shade, let raffia dry out before it goes back in a closed suitcase, and hang linen and ramie overnight so the creases drop out. Spend on what the week is hardest on: leather sandals rather than suede, and a hat sized to your head. If much of this is already in your closet, our AI stylist can sort what you own into the days of the trip and point out only the gaps.

How we chose

  • The setting first: every pick had to work in one of the places a Tulum week goes, from a day bed and a cenote ladder to a bike pedal and a sand floor at dinner.
  • Straps and soles: cenote swimsuits with straps over the shoulder or a high neck; bike sandals with a back or ankle strap; dinner shoes flat or on a wedge, never a stiletto.
  • Fabric for humidity: linen, ramie, cotton, fluid viscose and crochet, silk only in blends or for the party, and rubber or leather that can take a wet step.
  • Sleeves after dark: most of the dinner dresses cover the arms, in line with the CDC's advice on mosquitoes.
  • Sizes: 49 of the 55 clothing and shoe picks were offered in four or more sizes in mid-October.
  • Range: 31 houses, from Missoni's crochet and Gabriela Hearst's linen to Prada's rubber sandals. Prices run from under $300 to just under $6,000, and most pieces sit between $600 and $2,000.

Frequently asked questions

What should I wear in Tulum in December?

Light, breathable clothes for days around 84°F and nights around 66°F, by the SMN's averages for Tulum. Pack swimsuits, crochet or linen cover-ups, a wide-brimmed hat, flat sandals with a back strap, and long dresses with sleeves for dinner outdoors.

Can you wear sunscreen in the cenotes?

Usually not before you swim. Por Esto, a Quintana Roo daily, reported in March 2026 that most cenotes in the state do not allow ordinary sunscreen, insect repellent or body creams, and that many require a shower first. Rules vary by cenote, so ask at the entrance, and cover up with a long-sleeved shirt and a hat instead.

What should I wear to the Tulum ruins?

A wide-brimmed hat, a loose long-sleeved shirt or dress in linen or cotton, and sandals with an ankle strap or sneakers. Go when the site opens at 8 a.m.; INAH lists last entry at 3:30 p.m.

What is the dress code for dinner in Tulum?

Relaxed but considered: a long linen, ramie or cotton dress, ideally with sleeves for the mosquitoes and the cooler night, with espadrille wedges or flat sandals for sand and deck floors.

Is there sargassum in Tulum in winter?

Usually less than in summer, but not always none. In a 2025 release, Quintana Roo's state government put the seaweed's cycle at April to October, yet in the 2025–26 winter the University of South Florida's lab warned of unusually early beaching on the Mexican Caribbean coast. Check the lab's latest monthly outlook before you go.

What do you wear to a party in Tulum on New Year's Eve?

Fringe, metallic crochet or chainmail in a mini or midi length, with flat sandals or a wedge for sand and a long sleeve or light layer for the small hours.
