Balmain, Explained: The Six-Button Jacket, Antonin Tron's New Era and How Balmain Fits

Balmain is the Paris couture house Pierre Balmain opened in 1945, and the piece to know first is a jacket: double-breasted, cut close at the waist, with structured shoulders and gold buttons. If our stylists could keep one piece of Balmain, it would be that six-button jacket in black wool: it goes over jeans, a slip dress or the black trousers you already own. Antonin Tron, creative director since November 2025, has added a second jacket worth knowing, the waisted Signature jacket, and moved the house from loud glamour toward draped jersey. Below: the history and Tron's direction, the codes, the blazers, dresses, jeans, bags and shoes worth buying, how Balmain sizing runs, and whether Balmain is worth it.

A short history of Balmain, from 1945 to Antonin Tron

Pierre Balmain, born in 1914 in the French Alps, studied architecture in Paris before he turned to dressmaking. He trained with Edward Molyneux and then worked for Lucien Lelong, where, from 1941 to 1945, he and Christian Dior designed the collections, as the Museum at FIT's biography of Balmain records. He opened his own house in 1945, and Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas came to his first show. In the 1950s he gave his look a name, "Jolie Madame": polished, feminine and built on the hourglass. By the house's account he dressed women from Josephine Baker to Sophia Loren, and his definition of the job, "dressmaking is the architecture of movement," is still the line the house quotes about cut. A young Karl Lagerfeld worked there in the 1950s.

After Pierre Balmain died in 1982, others led the house; by the dates in Balmain's history of its creative directors, Erik Mortensen, the founder's right hand since 1948, led until 1990; Hervé Pierre followed, then Oscar de la Renta, who designed the couture and a ready-to-wear line from 1992 to 2002 (other accounts date his arrival to 1993). The modern Balmain belongs to Christophe Decarnin, creative director from 2005 to 2011, with his sharp tailoring, strong shoulders and heavy embellishment. Olivier Rousteing joined the studio in 2009 and became creative director in 2011; Balmain says he was 25 and calls him the youngest-ever head of a French fashion house. Over 14 years he made Balmain a celebrity and social-media brand, with a following the house calls the Balmain Army. Mayhoola bought the company in 2016. Rousteing left in 2025, and on July 14, 2026, Puig's Rabanne named him its creative director.

Balmain under Antonin Tron: what has changed

Tron, born in Paris in 1984 and trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, spent seventeen years in the design teams of Louis Vuitton, Givenchy, Balenciaga and Saint Laurent, and founded his own label, Atlein, in 2016. Backstage at his first Balmain show, for fall 2026, he described his aim as "minimal opulence," and W's review of the debut saw a clear turn away from the flashy, maximalist Balmain of the previous decade. His second collection, for spring 2027, was shown on September 30, 2026, at the Hôtel de Maisons, once Karl Lagerfeld's home, and went further into body-conscious drape, lingerie details and animal print.

For a shopper, three changes matter:

  • A new jacket. The Signature jacket opened Tron's first show. Balmain says it is rooted in the uniform Pierre Balmain designed in 1975 for Air France's first female aviator: raglan shoulder pads and full sleeves over a fitted waist. Balmain's spring 2027 notes say the same pilot jacket returns as eel-skin blousons and oversized satin and snake-print coats, so it is more than a one-season idea.
  • Drape instead of cling. Tron reworks the house's early-1950s draping. His dresses and tops, in viscose jersey and silk charmeuse, are gathered and wrapped around the body rather than knitted tight to it.
  • New bags. The Sphynx, a soft nappa bag cinched at the middle by a tubular gold belt, takes its inspiration from the Sphinge dress in Pierre Balmain's fall 1977 collection, according to Balmain's notes on the fall 2026 collection. The Dinner at 8, which Balmain calls a clutch, is soft, twisted lambskin with a bracelet-like Chain Link buckle.

The earlier codes haven't gone: the six-button jacket, the quilted knits and the Anthem buckle are all still in the line. On the bags, the Anthem buckle carries the PB initials, while Tron's Sphynx and Dinner at 8 are engraved "Balmain Paris." Our story Balmain's New Era shows more of Tron's first season.

Which Signature jacket to buy. Our stylists would start with the wool one: black gabardine, gold officer-style buttons and a removable belt, as right over a shirt at the office as over a slip dress at night. The lambskin version, closed with press studs across an asymmetric front, is the one to keep for a decade; denim is the weekend jacket, and shearling is for real cold. Most versions flare out below a pronounced waist, so the jacket sits best over narrow trousers, a pencil skirt or a slim knit dress, and badly over a full skirt or a thick sweater. Size it for your shoulders and bust. For how it compares with bikers and leather blazers from other houses, read our guide to the best leather jackets.

The Balmain codes, and how to wear them

Four things make a piece read as Balmain, and each is strongest on its own:

  • The shoulder. Squared on the six-button jackets, rounded on Tron's, it runs through every era of the modern house. Balance it with a narrow line below: slim trousers, straight jeans or a pencil skirt.
  • Gold buttons. The tailoring carries gold buttons the listings call "Lion Head" or "Double Chain Lion," and they come back on the knit dresses and cardigans. When they are on, keep every other piece of metal gold and small.
  • The knit. A compact rib, quilted into a raised diamond, shaped into flared dresses and cropped cardigans.
  • Embellishment. Beading, sequins and embroidery. In the made-to-order pieces it is extreme: Balmain says one embroidered leopard midi skirt takes 3,750 hours of handwork by 20 craftspeople.

Then there is the Anthem buckle, a broad, squared gold buckle engraved PB, on belts, bags, jeans, boots and the belted tweeds. Wear one code at a time and keep the rest plain: a six-button jacket with a white T-shirt and jeans, not with an Anthem belt, bag and boots at once.

Balmain blazers: the six-button jacket, and which to buy first

The six-button jacket is the Balmain blazer: double-breasted, with an Italian tailored collar, structured shoulders, five buttons at each cuff and a defined waist. Read the listings for the wool versions and you'll find that only one of the six front buttons fastens; the other five are decorative. With one button doing all the work, the jacket either lies flat when it is closed or it pulls, which is why the fit matters more here than on a looser blazer.

Which to buy first. Our stylists' pick is black grain de poudre, a dry, finely textured cloth, here 100 percent wool and made in Portugal. Its gold buttons are the only ornament it needs. Navy comes second, in virgin wool, and Balmain lists it up to a French 46 (US 14), two sizes past most of its jackets.

Read the label on tweed. Tweed is a Balmain staple, but the cloth varies. The black six-button tweed is 77 percent polyester; the two-tone belted tweed blends polyamide, acrylic and merino; the short officer jacket is cotton and polyamide. They hold their shape well, but they are not the warm, wool-rich tweed the word suggests. If warmth matters, buy the grain de poudre, or the charcoal tweed dress on spaghetti straps, which is 95 percent virgin wool. For evening, the satin-crepe jacket has no buttons: it closes edge to edge under a self-tie shawl collar, with a knot at the waist.

Fit. Size for your shoulders and bust, and try it buttoned over the layer you will wear under it, a shirt or a fine knit, not a chunky sweater. A tailor can take in a waist; a shoulder that is too narrow can't be fixed. Our stylists keep the jacket on a wide, shaped hanger so the shoulders hold their line, brush it between wears and follow the care label for anything more. Balmain dresses: the knit dress, draped jersey and evening

The knit dress

The Balmain knit dress is a compact rib quilted into a raised diamond, cut short and flared from a defined waist, with three gold Lion Head buttons on one shoulder. It is mostly viscose with a little stretch, so it holds its line on the body; our stylists store it folded, because a heavy viscose knit left on a hanger can drop at the shoulders and hem. The cropped cardigan in the same quilted rib works as a jacket over a slip dress or jeans, and a finer Fléchage rib makes the long draped dress. Under Tron the knits have turned toward lingerie: lace-trimmed vest tops and slit midi skirts in fine viscose knit. And read the label on the beaded "cashmere" sweater: it is 70 percent virgin wool and 30 percent cashmere. Browse more designer knit dresses.

Draped jersey

This is Tron's most wearable idea. The dresses are fluid jersey, mostly viscose, wrapped across the body and gathered at the sides, and most have a gold chain-tassel drawstring you can pull tighter or let out, which makes them more forgiving than the knits. Balmain designs them to move from day into evening: with a fitted jacket and ankle boots they work at a desk, with patent pumps and gold earrings at dinner. Watch the length: Balmain's models are 5'9" to 5'11", so if you are much shorter the minis will fall closer to the knee than they look online. The tops and the slit skirt share the same jersey and can be worn as a two-piece.

For evening

Tron frames his evening wardrobe around film-noir heroines: long velvet jacquard draped across the body, sequinned tulle wrapped and tied with an oversized bow, silk charmeuse knotted at the front, and velvet embroidered with glass beads into tiger stripes. The long black sequinned dress is the one you will still wear in five years; the chartreuse charmeuse and the tiger velvet are for a season or two. The sequins are embroidered onto stretch tulle, so the dresses have some give. Of the jackets, the sequinned one-button style with satin lapels does the work of a dress over black trousers, and the Insect jacket, with seven insects raised in beads, crystals and metallic thread, turns a plain black dress into a party look. Balmain jeans: the fits, the sizing and what to wear them with

Balmain sizes its women's jeans like its jackets, in French sizes rather than waist measurements: its size chart puts jackets and denim on one table, and a 36 is a US 4. The listings describe five shapes:

  • Straight: a loose straight leg in faded light-blue denim, and a straight cut in denim with a faint diamond pattern and gold-and-silver coin buttons.
  • Bootcut: faded, flaring gently from the knee.
  • Barrel: a loose, curved leg with an asymmetric front.
  • Loose: in ivory, with carpenter-style patches down the legs.
  • Belted: high-waisted and fitted, with the Anthem buckle on a matching denim belt.

All are made in Italy. Most are 100 percent cotton with no stretch; the bootcut and the belted jean add 2 percent elastane. Our advice: rigid denim relaxes only a little, so buy the size that closes comfortably now. Wear the straight or barrel leg with a six-button jacket: the nipped waist and strong shoulder need a straight or curved leg below, not a skinny one. Balmain bags: the Anthem, the Sphynx and the Dinner at 8

The lines worth knowing, with sizes from the listings:

  • The Anthem: soft calfskin belted around the middle with the oversized Anthem buckle (a magnet does the closing), on a leather-and-chain handle. The medium, 35 by 20 by 8 cm (about 14 by 8 by 3 inches), takes a phone, a wallet and a small makeup bag, not a laptop.
  • The Sphynx: Tron's bag, in supple nappa, gathered into an hourglass by a tubular gold belt, in mini and medium (34 by 20 by 12 cm). Both go in the hand or on the shoulder, and the mini also goes across the body.
  • The Dinner at 8: soft, twisted lambskin with the Chain Link buckle in front and a zip at the back. It has no strap, so treat it as an oversized clutch for evening.
  • The 64-83: a structured flap bag folded like origami, on an adjustable strap. Of these five, it is the easiest to wear on the shoulder all day.
  • The 1945 Soft tote: crackled calfskin with BALMAIN in gold letters, a leather-laced chain handle and metal feet. At 40 by 30 by 13.5 cm, it is the work bag.

Our stylists' order: the Anthem in black for the house signature, the Sphynx for the newest Balmain, the tote for a working day. For the buckle without the bag, there is the Anthem belt: the same PB buckle on calfskin, in a 4.5 cm or 2 cm width. Balmain sizes belts in centimeters, so measure a belt you own from the buckle's prong to the hole you use most. See every designer handbag on Vêtir.

Balmain shoes and boots

Balmain's heels are high: most of its pumps and boots on Vêtir list 9.5 cm, about 3.75 inches. Decide how much you will walk before you choose:

  • Thigh-high boots. The No Wedge, in slouched, draped calfskin, has what Balmain calls an invisible carbon heel, so it seems to stand on a cut-away wedge; the crinkled-patent pair has a curved wedge and an inner zip.
  • Anthem ankle boots, in stretch lambskin with a pointed toe, a stiletto heel and the Anthem buckle at the ankle.
  • Sync pumps, with a gold chain running from the ankle strap to the toe.
  • Lower heels: the Sphynx ankle boot sits on a 4.5 cm kitten heel and closes at the ankle with a drawcord, and the Anthem loafers are flat on a 4.5 cm cleated sole.

Shoes come in European sizes, some with half sizes, and Balmain's chart makes a 37 a US 7. The listings give no calf measurements for the tall boots; if your calves are full, we would choose the draped No Wedge over a fitted shaft. For tall boots from other houses, read our guide to the best knee-high boots or browse all designer knee-high boots.

Balmain sizing: how it runs

Balmain's charts convert its French clothing sizes, used for everything from jackets to jeans, like this:

Balmain (French)USItalianLetter
34238XS
36440S
38642M
40844L
421046XL

Three habits help:

  • Read the fit line. Each listing says how the piece is cut: "tailored fit, defined waist" on the six-button jackets, "fitted cut" on the Signature jackets and knits, "loose fit" or "straight cut" on the jeans. Tailored and fitted mean close to the body.
  • Check the model. Most listings give her height, usually 175 to 180 cm, and her size, almost always a 36.
  • Shoes, belts and T-shirts: shoes in European sizes, belts in centimeters, T-shirts and some jersey in letter sizes.

Our stylists' rule of thumb, not Balmain's: if you are between two sizes, take the larger in tailoring, where the shoulders have to fit; in the draped jersey, take the size that fits your shoulders and let the drawstring set the waist.

Five ways to wear Balmain this fall and holiday

  1. Office: the navy six-button jacket over a white silk shirt, ivory jeans, black Sync pumps and a black Anthem bag.
  2. Weekend: the black grain de poudre jacket with a white T-shirt, faded straight-leg jeans and black Anthem loafers.
  3. Holiday dinner: the olive-chartreuse draped jersey dress under the black lambskin Signature jacket, with a plum Sphynx mini and black patent strappy pumps.
  4. Party: the black quilted knit dress with sheer black tights, the No Wedge thigh-high boots and a plum Dinner at 8.
  5. Cold weather: the shearling Signature jacket over the ivory quilted cardigan and ivory jeans, with beige suede ankle boots and an ivory Anthem mini bag.

Is Balmain worth it? What to buy, and what to skip

For the tailoring, yes, in our stylists' view. The six-button jacket is the reference strong-shouldered, gold-buttoned blazer, cut in pure wool and lined in twill, and it is still in Balmain's line after a change of creative director, the best sign that it will not date.

What we would buy once and keep: the black grain de poudre six-button jacket; the wool Signature jacket, which Tron has already carried into a second season; a black draped jersey dress; the Anthem belt; and a black Anthem or Sphynx bag.

One-season pleasures: the chartreuse charmeuse, the tiger embroidery, the python-effect leathers and the sequinned tweed. Buy them for love, not as investments.

What to skip: the logo T-shirts, which cost a lot for what they are; the polyester-heavy tweed if warmth is the point; and the thigh-high boots unless you are happy in a 9.5 cm heel.

How it compares. For the shoulder with less shine, look at Saint Laurent (our Saint Laurent guide covers the fits). Versace turns the gold hardware and print up further (see our Versace guide), ALAÏA cuts its knits closer still, Tom Ford is the sleeker, more seventies route to glamorous tailoring, and Alexander McQueen the choice for a sharper, Savile Row-cut shoulder. How we chose

Every piece we picked is new, full-price Balmain from the house's own US store. We read each listing for fiber, country of origin and fit line, and looked at every photograph. The edit is split between the codes that predate Tron (the six-button jacket, the quilted knits, the Anthem) and his first two collections (the Signature jacket, the draped jersey, the Sphynx and the Dinner at 8), and we name the cloth wherever it differs from what the name implies, as with the polyester-rich tweed. We favored pieces Balmain cuts across most of its French 34-to-42 run, and kept a few shorter-run statement pieces only where nothing else in the line does the same job.

Frequently asked questions

Who is Balmain's creative director?

Antonin Tron, since November 2025. His first collection, for fall 2026, was shown in Paris in March 2026, and his second, for spring 2027, on September 30, 2026. He succeeded Olivier Rousteing, creative director from 2011 to 2025, who was named creative director of Rabanne in July 2026.

What is Balmain known for?

Strong-shouldered, gold-buttoned jackets, quilted knit dresses, embellishment and the Anthem buckle; under Tron, also draped jersey, the Signature jacket and the Sphynx bag.

Does Balmain run small?

Balmain's chart is standard (a French 36 is a US 4), but the jackets and knits are cut close to the body. If you are between sizes, our stylists take the larger size in tailoring, so the shoulders fit; the draped jersey dresses have drawstrings and are more forgiving. In shoes, Balmain's chart makes a 37 a US 7.

Who owns Balmain?

Mayhoola, the Qatari investment firm, which bought the house in 2016. Balmain's November 2025 announcement of Tron's appointment named Mayhoola's chief executive, Rachid Mohamed Rachid, as Balmain's chairman and Matteo Sgarbossa as its chief executive.

Where are Balmain bags made?

In Italy, according to every Balmain bag listing we checked. The clothing is made in several countries, including Italy, France, Portugal, Poland, Bulgaria and Turkey.
