Work Outfit Ideas: 24 Looks for the Week, Sorted by Office Dress Code

The best work outfit ideas share one formula: a tailored or structured layer, a quiet top and a shoe you can stand in all day, in two or three colors from one family. Your office's dress code then decides how much tailoring the formula needs. A corporate office wants a suit, or a jacket over a dress. Business casual lets a knit polo or a buttoned cardigan do the jacket's job. A creative office leaves room for leather, satin and one strong color.
Below are 24 complete outfits, each a named formula, sorted by those three dress codes and by the three days that break the pattern: the hybrid commute day, the client presentation and Friday. A table maps a Monday-to-Friday week for each kind of office, and every section ends with the pieces to shop.
Work outfit ideas for a full week, by office dress code
Plan the week from its hardest day, usually a presentation, and build the other four around it. Then repeat pieces, not outfits: one navy jacket can carry Monday, Wednesday and Friday over three different bottoms, and the days off give the wool the rest between wears that Woolmark recommends (more on care below). Among the occasions people name when they ask Vêtir's AI stylist what to wear, work, the office, interviews and conferences together rank fourth by the number of accounts asking, after casual days, parties and dinners.
Find your office in the left column and read across to the numbered outfits below.

Corporate office outfits for women
Corporate here means finance, law, government and any role where clients see you most days. The jacket stays on for meetings, and cloth does the talking: wool with enough weight to hold a crease. Our guide to work conference dress codes sets out the differences if you are unsure where your office sits. Coverage briefs come up in what people ask our AI stylist, for example skirts at least to the knee and sleeves to the elbow for work, and all four outfits below meet it, outfit 3 once the jacket is on.
1. The navy suit
A navy suit, jacket and trousers cut from one cloth, with a white or pale blue poplin shirt and black loafers or a midnight pump. Navy is as formal as black and less severe at close range. A chalk or pin stripe adds length to the body; Givenchy's double-breasted pinstripe jacket in dark navy wool, with peak lapels and patch pockets, is the strongest version here. The house lists pleated wide-leg trousers in the same 100% wool and the same color code, 499-Dark Navy; they are sold separately, so you can size the jacket to your shoulders and the trousers to your hips. The trousers return in outfit 6.
2. Herringbone and a pencil skirt
Gabriela Hearst's charcoal Leiva jacket in speckled wool-cashmere herringbone over a black wool crêpe pencil skirt, with an ivory silk shell, sheer black tights and black pumps on a 60mm heel. The herringbone gives the jacket a surface the skirt lacks, so the two darks read as a pairing rather than a mismatch. Gabriela Hearst's listing describes the Leiva as slim at the waist with a hem below the hip, the length that balances a pencil skirt; a cropped jacket over a skirt that ends below the knee tends to cut the figure in half.
3. The sheath under flannel
A navy sheath, such as The Row's sleeveless Mirna in cady or Ferragamo's split-neck virgin wool sheath with flap pockets, under Gabriela Hearst's smoke-gray double-breasted Gavin jacket in wool and cashmere flannel, with a midnight velvet pump. Both colors are cool, so the pale flannel softens the navy without fighting it: from across a room the outfit reads as one quiet column, and up close as two cloths.
4. The sheath over a shirt
Versace's black sheath in grain de poudre wool has a round neck and fixed straps, so it can go over a white poplin shirt the way a pinafore does. Add black opaque tights and Proenza Schouler's Esme loafer pumps, which set a loafer front on a block heel. The shirt turns a sleeveless dress into a long-sleeved outfit, and the collar gives the face the frame a jacket usually would.

Business casual outfits for women
Business casual runs on trousers. The jacket becomes optional because a collared knit or a buttoned cardigan frames the face just as well. What keeps it at work level is tailored trousers in wool or cashmere rather than chinos, and leather loafers or a low pump rather than sneakers.
5. The knit polo and pleats
Gabriela Hearst's Frank polo, short-sleeved and knitted from cashmere and silk, tucked fully into black pleated wool trousers, with black leather loafers. A knitted collar frames the face like a shirt collar and never needs an iron. A short polo is cut to sit at the waistband, so tuck it in fully and let the pleats fall straight. For colder weeks, Max Mara knits a long-sleeved ribbed cashmere polo in mid-gray.
6. The buttoned cardigan
Bottega Veneta's gray melange wool cardigan, buttoned to the top and worn as the top itself, over the navy pinstripe trousers from outfit 1, with navy pumps. Closed, a V-neck cardigan with gold buttons reads as a soft jacket; worn open over a T-shirt, it reads as a weekend layer. The ribbed hem matters: it should sit on the trouser waistband, not fold over it.
7. The ivory knit and the wide trouser
Victoria Beckham's ivory polo-collar sweater in merino and cashmere over Max Mara's mid-gray cashmere wide-leg trousers, which come with a detachable belt, and black slingbacks. The listing says the sweater's hem falls below the hip, so give it a loose front tuck that shows the belt; untucked over wide trousers it would hide the waist entirely.
8. The white shirt and pinstripe trouser
A crisp white poplin shirt tucked into Alexander McQueen's dark brown pinstripe wool trousers, with chocolate suede penny loafers and a brown leather belt. Brown suiting with white is warmer than gray and just as clear, and the stripe gives a plain shirt something to sit against. Keep the bag in the same warm family.
9. The collared knit and the barrel trouser
Versace's long-sleeved navy knit polo with its double-layer collar, tucked into Bottega Veneta's light gray pleated barrel-leg trousers, with black loafers. Barrel legs curve out at the knee and back in at the ankle, so they want a fitted top and a narrow shoe to show the shape: here, a slim knit tucked in and a loafer.

Creative office outfits
In studios, agencies, galleries and fashion offices the rules loosen, but one discipline holds: one statement per outfit. Let a leather skirt, a satin skirt or a red sweater carry the look, and keep everything around it quiet.
10. The warm leather skirt
Tom Ford's fluted leather midi skirt in dark brown lambskin, cut as a pencil and falling below the knee, with an ivory knit and chocolate suede pumps. Brown is the warmer, quieter way into leather at work, and matching the shoe to the skirt carries one line from waist to floor.
11. Black in four textures
Proenza Schouler's black leather Kenza skirt, A-line with asymmetric seams, under Jil Sander's black superfine merino crewneck, tucked in at the front, and Bottega Veneta's oversized black wool jacket, with ALAÏA's croc-effect ballet flats. All black works in a creative office when every piece has a different surface: matte knit, smooth leather, dry wool, embossed shoe.
12. Satin by daylight
Saint Laurent's black satin pencil skirt, cut to the knee with a long vent at the back, with Max Mara's mid-gray ribbed cashmere polo and black slingbacks. A knit on top takes the evening out of satin; a silk blouse with the same skirt would read as dinner.
13. One red knit
A red sweater, such as Magda Butrym's wool-and-cashmere polo with patch pockets or Prada's dark red crewneck, over Loewe's black leather wide-leg cropped trousers, with black loafers. One saturated piece against black is the easiest way to wear color at work: the eye goes to the face, and the rest of the outfit stays out of the way.

What to wear on a hybrid commute day
The hybrid commute day has become its own dress code: a train or a long walk, a desk, a meeting room and often a video call. Gallup reports that as of May 2026, 52% of US employees with remote-capable jobs work hybrid, 26% fully remote and 22% on-site (Gallup). And the Bureau of Labor Statistics' American Time Use Survey found that in 2025, 35% of employed people did some or all of their work at home on days they worked, and women were more likely to work at home than men, 38% against 31% (Bureau of Labor Statistics).
Choose cloth that comes out of a crowded carriage looking the same as it went in, waists that stay comfortable through a long sit, nothing that needs re-tucking when you stand, and flat shoes or a low, steady heel. If you carry a laptop, our guide to work bags sizes a tote to each MacBook.
14. The cashmere jersey suit
Brunello Cucinelli's gray cashmere jersey jacket, half-lined in cupro according to its listing, with the house's double-pleated trousers in the same jersey, a white T-shirt and black leather sneakers for the walk, and loafers in the tote. Knitted jersey gives with you on a train seat and shakes out after a day folded into a bag in a way a crisp woven suit does not, and it still reads as a suit across a desk.
15. The drawstring trouser
Prada's charcoal pleated wool trousers, which have a drawstring waist and belt loops, with a black merino crewneck, Max Mara's navy pinstripe double-breasted jacket in viscose and wool jersey, and black loafers. The drawstring adjusts after lunch; the belt loops and pleats let the trousers pass for tailoring in any meeting. On a video-call day, swap the pinstripe jacket for a plain one (the camera advice is below).
16. The one-piece
Bottega Veneta's slate gray jersey crêpe dress, sleeveless and asymmetric with a mock turtleneck and a brooch at the waist, or ALAÏA's black jersey jumpsuit tied at the waist, with flat shoes and a charcoal cardigan for cold meeting rooms. One piece means there is nothing to re-tuck after a crowded commute.
17. The jogger that passes
Max Mara's brown stretch wool flannel trousers, which the house calls jogger-style: a drawstring waist, elasticated at the back, with an ivory polo-collar sweater and Prada's chocolate suede penny loafers on a rubber sole. Flannel and a front fly keep the shape tailored; the jogger cut makes it the most comfortable outfit here for a two-hour round trip.

On wet mornings, wear shoes with a grippy sole: the listings for Prada's two loafers and ALAÏA's croc-effect ballet flats name rubber in the sole, and Loewe's suede loafers, which sit on a 45mm heel, a TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) outsole, while Khaite's velvet Jane flat and Roger Vivier's slingback flats belong to dry days. Our guide to the best designer loafers covers fit, and our loafer shop has every style.

What to wear for a client presentation
First decide where your audience is. In the room, people see you from several yards away, so a single strong color, a firm shoulder and a heel you can stand on for an hour all help. On a screen, the camera sets the rules. The guide to dressing on camera that Ohio University's Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine wrote for its faculty and staff advises against houndstooth, small checks and fine stripes, which can appear to crawl or move on video; against large areas of black or white, and of red or other highly saturated colors; and it asks for a lapel, button-up shirt or collar to clip a lavalier microphone to (Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine). So the pinstripe suit from outfit 1 is for in-person days.
18. Wine jacket, matching skirt
Max Mara sells a double-breasted blazer and a pencil skirt separately, both listed in 97% wool and 3% elastane in the color the house calls Wine-Coloured, so together they make a suit you can size piece by piece. Add TOTEME's ivory tie-neck top in a fine rib of lyocell and wool (its listing calls the knit sheer, so wear a camisole under it) and black slingbacks on a 55mm heel. One deep color from shoulder to knee stands out from the back of a room full of navy and gray. For a second outfit, wear the jacket alone over light gray pleated trousers with a white shirt and black pumps, as in the image at the top of this page.
19. The camera outfit
Gabriela Hearst's plain smoke-gray flannel jacket rather than a striped one, over Prada's pink poplin shirt with French cuffs or Phoebe Philo's dark teal poplin shirt, with gray trousers. The camera guide's own example is a gray or charcoal jacket over a pastel shirt, and it lists blues and greens among the colors to wear, so pink or teal under plain gray stays inside its advice; the collar and lapel give a microphone somewhere to sit. Keep jewelry small and quiet; a necklace that knocks against a clip-on microphone is audible.
20. The paneled sheath
Victoria Beckham's Claude dress in a dark taupe woven blend of polyester, wool and nylon, a sheath with a paneled bodice, short sleeves and a hem below the knee, with sheer tights in a warm nude and Gianvito Rossi's chocolate suede Piper pumps. The seaming gives one piece the structure of tailoring, and there is nothing to come untucked when you stand to speak. For a client who expects a jacket, add the smoke-gray flannel one from outfit 19.
21. The lectern outfit
Tom Ford's pleated black wool-blend trousers, ALAÏA's white poplin shirt with its basque waist, Versace's charcoal pinstripe double-breasted jacket kept buttoned, and Phoebe Philo's Club 60 pumps, which the listing gives a 60mm heel. Hem the wide legs for this exact pump, so the hem just grazes the top of the shoe when you stand at a lectern; a double-breasted jacket is cut to be worn closed, which keeps the front clean while you gesture.

Friday outfits for work
Friday is where offices differ most. If yours allows jeans, keep them dark, clean and without distressing, hem them for the shoe you will wear, and keep one tailored piece in the outfit. If it does not, Friday is the day for outfit 4 or 5 with the softest shoe you own.
22. Dark denim and a navy jacket
Versace's indigo straight jeans in a rinse wash, or Max Mara's midnight flares, with Stella McCartney's oversized navy jacket and its studded belt, a white shirt and black loafers. A dark rinse is the most formal wash denim comes in, and the belted jacket gives the outfit a waist without a tuck.
23. Ecru jeans and burgundy
Isabel Marant's ecru bootcut jeans with The Row's burgundy cashmere crewneck and Loewe's dark chocolate suede loafers. Ecru denim reads as a pale trouser rather than as jeans, which helps in offices that frown on blue denim.
24. The denim column skirt
Carolina Herrera's high-rise indigo denim column midi skirt, with five pockets, worn with a white poplin shirt and black knee boots. Denim cut like a pencil skirt is more office than jeans, and a crisp shirt keeps it there.

What to buy once, and what to buy for a season
Buy once, and buy the best you can: a navy or charcoal suit in a mid-weight wool that splits into two separates, a white poplin shirt, a fine knit polo, two pairs of leather loafers (one for the black and navy outfits, one for the warm ones) and one pump on a heel of 60mm or less. Treat the rest as pleasures for a season or two: tailoring in a strong color like wine, a fluted or embroidered leather skirt, satin by day, an oversized belted jacket and a barrel-leg trouser, a shape that dates faster than a straight leg. Our fall work wardrobe guide lists the core pieces in full, and our winter work outfits cover flannel, coats and boots for the cold months.
Fit checks before you cut the tags
- Jackets: with your arms relaxed, the sleeve should end at the wrist bone. Raise your arms as if to write on a whiteboard; the jacket should not ride above your waistband. Try a double-breasted jacket buttoned.
- Trousers: sit down in them. The waistband should not dig, the seat should not pull, and when you stand again the pleats should lie closed.
- Pencil skirts: sit down, then climb a step. The hem should still cover the knee when you sit, and the vent should let you take a stair without hitching the skirt.
- Shirts: if the placket gapes at the bust, size for the bust and have the waist taken in.
- Sizes: read each listing's size chart rather than converting from memory. Gabriela Hearst's jackets run in Italian sizes, Victoria Beckham's in UK sizes (her Claude dress lists UK 8 as a US 4), Isabel Marant's jeans in French sizes and Versace's by waist.
Care that keeps work clothes in rotation
Woolmark's care advice: rest wool garments for 24 hours between wears, hang woven wool on shaped or padded hangers, fold knitwear into drawers, brush woven garments lengthwise after wearing to remove surface soil before it can stain, and hang wool in a steamy bathroom to drop creases (Woolmark). Two suits worn on alternate days get that rest built in, and two pairs of work shoes worn in turns give the leather a day to dry out.
The mistakes that make a work outfit look wrong
- Wearing the commute shoe into the meeting. Change at the door, or keep the commute shoe as polished as the meeting one.
- Two statements at once. A red sweater with a satin skirt competes; give each its own day.
- Hemming trousers for one shoe and wearing them with another. A wide leg hemmed for a 60mm pump drags on the pavement in flats; keep flat days for cropped or ankle-length cuts.
For a week built around what you already own, ask our AI stylist to plan five outfits from your digital closet and fill the gaps with new pieces.
How we chose
Every outfit had to last a working day, commute included, so we read the fiber content of every piece of tailoring. Most is wool, wool and cashmere, or cashmere jersey; the exceptions are acetate-based crepes that hang without creasing, such as The Row's Mirna sheath and Alexander McQueen's pencil skirt, and viscose blends that fold into a tote. Skirts and dresses had to reach the knee, checked against on-model photographs wherever a flat shot left the length in doubt. For standing presentations we favored low heels: 55mm on Miu Miu's slingback, 60mm on the Club 60 and 70mm on the Maysli, by their listings. We left out a slingback sold as pre-order, distressed or faded jeans, and pieces down to their last one or two sizes. All are new, from houses on our luxury list, and each module mixes at least six houses.
Frequently asked questions
What should I wear to work?
A tailored or structured layer, a quiet top and a shoe you can stand in, pitched to your dress code: a suit or a jacket over a dress in a corporate office; wool trousers with a knit polo or a buttoned cardigan in business casual; one statement piece, such as a leather skirt, with quiet basics in a creative office.
How do I plan outfits for the work week?
Start with the hardest day, usually a presentation, and build the other four around it, repeating a jacket over different bottoms rather than repeating whole outfits.
What are good business casual outfits for women?
Pleated or straight wool trousers with a knit polo and loafers; a cardigan buttoned as a top over navy trousers; a white poplin shirt tucked into pinstripe trousers; a knit with a collar over a barrel-leg trouser.
What should I wear to present on a video call?
Solid colors under a plain jacket, with a collar or lapel for a clip-on microphone. The on-camera guide from Ohio University's Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine lists pastels, earth tones, blues and greens among the colors to wear, and advises against houndstooth, small checks and fine stripes, and against large areas of black, white, red or other highly saturated colors.
What are good work outfits for winter?
The same formulas in heavier cloth: flannel and herringbone tailoring, fine knits under jackets and dresses with opaque tights. Our winter work outfits guide covers coats, layering and commute boots.
How many pieces do I need for a week of work outfits?
About a dozen, not counting coats and bags: two jackets, three trousers, a skirt or dress, three knits or shirts and three pairs of shoes. If every top works with every bottom, that dozen gives you far more than five outfits.
