Men's Work Outfits: A Five-Day Plan for Every Dress Code, From the Suit to Friday

Men's work outfits start with the dress code your office actually keeps, not the one in the handbook. In a suit office, that means a navy or charcoal suit in four-season wool, a white or pale blue shirt, a silk tie on client days and black oxfords with a black belt. In business casual, the suit gives way to a navy or gray sport coat over wool trousers, with a fine knit or an open-collar shirt. Creative offices run on knitwear, tailored trousers and plain leather sneakers or loafers. Two habits hold at every level: the shoes, belt and bag come from one leather family, and a jacket is bought for its shoulders, because a tailor can fix almost everything else.

Below is a working week, from the suit office on Monday to the step down on Friday, with the client meeting, the commute and the hybrid day in between. The pieces come from Zegna, Canali, Brioni, Kiton and 19 other houses.

Men's work outfits by dress code

Most offices sit on one of three levels. Find yours, then use the days below as a rotation. If you are new or unsure, dress one level up for the first two weeks and come down once you know the room.

Dress codeJacketTrousersShirt or knitShoes, belt and bag
Business professional (the suit office): law, banking, client-facing roles. The suit's own jacket, in navy, charcoal or mid-gray.The suit's own trousers.A white or pale blue shirt and a silk tie.Black oxfords or monk straps, a black belt and a black briefcase.
Business casual.A sport coat that does not match the trousers.Gray, charcoal, olive or ivory wool.An open-collar shirt, a knit polo or a fine crewneck; the tie is optional.Black with navy and charcoal. Brown with gray, olive and ivory.
Smart casual (the creative office).Optional: an unstructured jacket or an overshirt.Wool trousers, or dark jeans where they are allowed.A rollneck, knit polo or crewneck.Leather sneakers, loafers or derbies on a rubber sole.

Two situations move you between the rows. A client meeting moves you to the client's level, or one above your own. A Friday or a hybrid day moves you one row down, never two. Among all our AI stylist's users, not men alone, work ranks fourth among occasions by the number of accounts asking, after casual days, parties and dinners; requests range from a conservative work outfit to a smart-casual business lunch.

Monday: the suit office

A suit office needs fewer suits than most men buy, but more than one. Wool recovers its shape between wears, and the Woolmark Company's care guidance is to rest a wool garment for 24 hours before wearing it again. Two suits worn on alternate days meet that rule. Three spread the wear further and let one go to the cleaner without breaking the rotation.

Buy navy first: it takes every shirt and tie in this guide, from a first interview to a board dinner. Then charcoal. Then mid-gray, the one suit our stylists wear with any of the leather families described below.

Next, read the cloth. "Super" numbers on a suit label are regulated: under the federal rule on labeling very fine wool (16 CFR 300.20a), a cloth sold as Super 110s must average 18.25 microns or finer, and Super 130s 17.25 microns or finer. For a suit worn twice a week, our stylists find that band drapes well and stands up to a desk chair; in their experience, higher numbers feel softer but crease sooner. Zegna's 15milmil15 plaid, which its listing describes as made from 15.2-micron yarn, sits at the very fine end, so make a cloth like that the suit for important days rather than the one for every Monday.

Lining matters in a heated office. Tom Ford's charcoal windowpane suit and Zegna's 15milmil15 plaid are both listed as unlined, which in our stylists' experience wears cooler, while Canali lines its charcoal suit in cupro, which slides over a knit. Browse every cut in our men's suit shop.

  • The default: navy suit, white shirt, burgundy silk tie, black cap-toe oxfords and a black belt. Wear it on the first day anywhere.
  • The softer formal: charcoal suit, pale blue shirt, navy tie and black monk straps.
  • The warm option: mid-gray suit, white shirt, olive tie, dark brown derbies and a brown belt. When our stylists put brown shoes with gray, they keep the shirt white or cream.
  • The pattern day: charcoal windowpane suit, white shirt, plain gray tie and black oxfords. One pattern per outfit, and the check is it.

A five-day rotation from three suits

Three suits, white and pale blue shirts, four ties and four pairs of shoes give five different days, with every suit resting at least a day between wears:

DaySuitShirtTieShoes
MondayNavyWhiteBurgundyBlack cap-toe oxfords.
TuesdayCharcoalPale blueNavyBlack monk straps.
WednesdayMid-grayWhiteOliveDark brown derbies.
ThursdayNavyPale blueGrayBlack cap-toe oxfords.
FridayCharcoalWhite, collar openNoneBlack derbies on a rubber sole.

The shirt

White for the most formal days and pale blue for the rest; a fine stripe or a small check is the third shirt, not the first. The collar should stand up under a tie without pinching, and the fit table below covers collar and cuff checks. Most Italian shirtmakers size by the collar in centimeters, with the inch conversions printed on the listings. See all men's dress shirts.

The shoes

The black cap-toe oxford, with closed lacing and a straight seam across the toe, is the most formal shoe a suit office asks for; John Lobb's City II, made in the UK with an elongated cap and a stacked heel, is a fine example of the type. A double monk strap is half a step more relaxed. A plain derby, with open lacing, is the most comfortable of the three for a day on your feet, and on a rubber sole, as on the Tod's pair here, it is the one for a rainy forecast. For the gray suit, our stylists reach for brown: Ferragamo's dark brown Trinity cap-toe oxford on a leather sole, or Brunello Cucinelli's mahogany derby, its calfskin brushed to a soft shine, on a rubber outsole. For the slip-ons that cover the rest of the week, see our guide to the best loafers for men.

Tuesday: business casual for men

Business casual is a suit taken apart and rebuilt from separates that clearly do not match. The jacket and trousers should differ by at least two shades, or in texture: a navy sport coat over mid-gray trousers looks chosen, while navy over a slightly different navy looks like a suit with the wrong trousers. If your office no longer expects a tie, an open collar or a knit polo does the tie's work of framing the face.

The first sport coat is navy, single-breasted, in a cloth with some surface. Zegna's textured navy jacket blends wool, silk and cashmere, is unlined and has patch pockets at the hip, all of which keep it on the casual side of a suit jacket; Kiton's navy blazer is solid cashmere. The second jacket is gray or a warm neutral. Versace's light gray Prince of Wales jacket, with horn buttons and one Medusa button on the chest pocket, is the gray choice. Zegna's beige micro-houndstooth in silk and cashmere is the warm one, and beige, being a neutral, takes either leather family described below. A true brown jacket, such as Zegna's corduroy, our stylists keep to gray, olive and ivory trousers and brown shoes. See every men's blazer and sport coat.

  • Classic: navy sport coat, light gray pleated trousers, white open-collar shirt and black derbies.
  • Knit instead of shirt: gray sport coat, charcoal flannel trousers, navy merino crewneck and black monk straps.
  • Warm: beige houndstooth sport coat, mid-gray flannel trousers, cream rollneck and dark brown suede loafers.
  • Color without risk: navy sport coat, olive wool trousers, white shirt and burgundy penny loafers.

Trousers carry business casual, so buy three before a second jacket: a light or mid-gray, a charcoal and one with color, olive or ivory. Pleats, as on Canali's light gray pair, give room to sit through a long meeting without the front pulling; a flat front suits a slimmer leg.

Wednesday: the creative office and smart casual

In a studio, an agency or a tech company, the knit replaces both the shirt and the tie, and the jacket becomes optional. Zegna's Cashseta rollneck, 70 percent cashmere and 30 percent silk according to Zegna's listings, and TOTEME's merino-and-silk crewneck are both knitted at 18 gauge, fine enough to slide into a jacket sleeve. Test any knit the same way: put the jacket on over it and bend your elbow, and if the sleeve catches, the knit is too thick for that jacket. A knit polo, such as Brunello Cucinelli's long-sleeved cashmere polo in taupe, is the most useful shape of all, because its collar sits like a shirt's under a jacket. Our guide to the best cashmere sweaters for men covers ply and gauge in depth.

Dark jeans belong here only if your office allows them. Keep them dark indigo, straight, unripped and hemmed, and wear them with black, gray or white shoes, which is how our stylists pair blue denim. An overshirt can stand in for the jacket on a mild day; our men's fall outfits guide explains how to wear one.

  • Rollneck and tailoring: navy cashmere-silk rollneck, gray sport coat, charcoal trousers and black leather sneakers.
  • Tonal: taupe cashmere knit polo, ivory wool trousers and dark brown suede loafers.
  • Collar showing: gray merino crewneck over a white shirt, dark indigo jeans and white leather sneakers.
  • All dark: black merino rollneck, mid-gray trousers and black derbies on a rubber sole.

Thursday: the client meeting

Dress for the client's dress code, not your own, and when you cannot know it, wear the suit and carry the tie. A banker visiting a design studio can loosen a tie and pocket it on the way up; a designer meeting a bank cannot produce one at the door. Keep a tie folded in the bag on any day a meeting might appear.

Tie width should follow the lapel. Burberry's pinstripe tie is 8 cm, about 3.25 inches, at its widest, and Givenchy's striped tie measures 3.1 inches at the point, according to their listings: standard widths for a medium lapel. Saint Laurent's satin tie, at about 2.8 inches, belongs with a narrower lapel. Tie it so the tip just reaches the top of the belt buckle, with a four-in-hand knot, which suits most collars. Solid colors, a fine stripe, a pin dot or a small check stay quiet under a client's scrutiny; save prints for the office party. Shop more men's ties.

  • Finance or law client: navy suit, white shirt, navy pinstripe tie, black cap-toe oxfords and a black briefcase.
  • Creative client: navy suit, ivory merino rollneck and black loafers, with no tie.
  • Client lunch: charcoal suit, pale blue shirt, burgundy tie and black monk straps.

If the meeting runs into the evening, our guide to what to wear to a business dinner picks up from here, and for December's office party, see our men's holiday party outfits.

The commute and the hybrid day

Many men now carry the office in a bag. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics' American Time Use Survey for 2025, released in June 2026, 35 percent of employed people did some or all of their work at home on days they worked, and 70 percent did some or all of it at their workplace. Among employed men, the at-home share was 31 percent. On a split week the bag carries a laptop both ways, so size it to the computer first.

Our guide to the best men's bags measures briefcases against each MacBook, so start there for the fit. Tom Ford's Elliot briefcase comes with a cross-body strap for the walk to the train. Bottega Veneta's medium Intrecciato backpack, about 18 by 11 inches, has its own laptop compartment. Brunello Cucinelli lines its grained calfskin briefcase in water-resistant fabric and gives it four open inner compartments, according to its listing, which suits a wet morning and a full day of papers.

Two rules keep the bag from spoiling the suit. Wear a backpack over knitwear and overshirts, not over a tailored jacket: the straps press the shoulder padding and rub the lapels. And match the bag to the shoes, as you would a belt. Black leather goes with the navy and charcoal days. Berluti's brown Un Jour briefcase belongs to the gray side of the wardrobe, with brown shoes. Our guide to the best men's winter coats covers the overcoat that goes over all of it.

  • Commuting on foot in the rain: navy suit, black derbies on a rubber sole, navy overcoat and the black grained-calfskin briefcase.
  • In for two meetings: gray merino crewneck, charcoal trousers, white leather sneakers and a black leather backpack, with the sport coat left on the back of the office chair.

If you already own most of these pieces, ask our AI stylist to lay out your five office days from the suits, shirts and knits in your digitized closet, and to name the one piece that would add the most outfits.

Friday: one step down, not two

Friday dress means one level below the rest of the week, not the weekend. In a suit office, that is the suit without the tie, or a sport coat and trousers. In business casual, it is a knit instead of a shirt and leather sneakers instead of derbies. The shoes do most of the work, so keep them plain: smooth leather, small or no logos, white, ivory or black, and clean. Prada's Court sneaker and Loewe's Jambo are the ivory and white references; Saint Laurent's Gym sneaker, black down to the sole with a small gold signature, is the black pair. John Lobb's nubuck sneaker, in a color the house calls moka, is the one for the gray, olive and ivory side of the wardrobe.

  • Suit office Friday: charcoal suit, white shirt with the collar open and black leather sneakers, if your office has seen sneakers with tailoring before.
  • Business casual Friday: navy merino polo sweater, light gray trousers and white leather sneakers.
  • Warm Friday: taupe cashmere polo, olive trousers and the moka nubuck sneakers.

Belts, and keeping the leathers in one family

Vêtir's stylists sort a man's leathers into families and keep each outfit inside one. The shoes, belt and bag decide the family, and the clothes follow:

FamilySuits and trousersShirts and knitsShoes, belt and bag
BlackNavy, charcoal, mid-gray and black.White, pale blue, gray and black.Black leather.
BrownMid-gray, light gray, olive, ivory and stone.White, cream, ecru, taupe and olive.Dark brown or chocolate leather.
BurgundyNavy, charcoal and gray.White and pale blue.Burgundy shoes and belt.

It is how our stylists work rather than a rule of dress, and it makes a small wardrobe easier to use: every navy suit already has its shoes, and a gray one has three choices. The belt should match the shoes in color and roughly in finish, polished with polished and suede with suede. For tailoring, choose a width of about 3 to 3.5 cm and a plain pin buckle: Berluti's black belt is 3.5 cm and Saint Laurent's plain thorn-buckle belt about 1.2 inches, roughly 3 cm, according to their listings. Buy it to fasten on the middle hole with the trousers you wear most, and skip it with trousers that have side adjusters. A reversible belt halves what you pack for a trip. Loewe's Loop belt is reversible, chocolate on one side and dark khaki on the other, going by its listed color name. Ferragamo's two-tone belt is photographed in burgundy with a black reverse. Browse every men's belt.

Fit and sizing: what to check before you buy

Most luxury tailoring is sold in Italian sizes and finished by a tailor after you buy it, so read the listing before the price:

PieceCheck in the mirrorWhat the listings tell you
Suit jacket or sport coatThe shoulder seam ends where your shoulder does, with no dent below it; the collar lies on the shirt collar; the jacket closes without pulling into an X at the button. An Italian jacket size is not always the US size plus ten. Kiton's wool-and-silk suit pairs a 50 with a US 40 but a 54 with a US 43, and Zegna's houndstooth sport coat marks a 52 as a 41.
Sleeves and hemsAbout a quarter to half an inch of shirt cuff shows; trousers rest on the shoe with a slight break or none.Zegna's tic-weave suit arrives with basted sleeves and Kiton's with unfinished ones, both with unfinished trouser hems, so budget for a tailor.
TrousersThe waist stays up without a belt; the pockets lie flat when you stand.Kiton's trouser listing pairs an Italian 48 with a US 32 waist and adds two inches a size, but charts differ between houses, so measure your waist and check each listing.
ShirtOne finger slides into the buttoned collar; the cuff ends at the wrist bone.Collars are in centimeters: Kiton and Brioni list a 39 as 15.5 inches, a 40 as 15.75 and a 42 as 16.5, so measure your neck if you fall between sizes.
KnitwearThe jacket sleeve slides over it, and the hem reaches the waistband without bunching under the jacket. The listing for Thom Browne's merino crewneck says the brand fits slightly small and suggests a size up.
ShoesSnug across the instep, with room to move the toes. The City II listing gives UK sizes, with a UK 10 marked as a US 11, and the listing for John Lobb's William monk notes that it runs small.

The one fit a tailor cannot fix is the shoulder. Sleeves, waist and hems can be altered, but a shoulder that is too wide or too narrow stays that way, so walk away from a jacket that fails the first row of the table, whatever it costs.

What to buy once, what to enjoy for a season, and the mistakes we see

Buy once and keep: a navy and a charcoal suit in Super 110s to 130s cloth; black cap-toe oxfords; two white and two pale blue shirts; a navy sport coat; gray wool trousers; a black leather belt with a plain buckle; and a black briefcase that closes and holds your laptop.

Enjoy for a season: the brown corduroy sport coat, a double-breasted herringbone jacket, a satin tie, the taupe cashmere polo. Buy them after the foundation, not before it.

The mistakes we see most:

  • A sweater too thick for the jacket over it, which makes the shoulders ride up and the sleeves bind.
  • Suit trousers that pool on the shoe, because the hem was left at the length the listing shipped with.
  • A shirt collar that gapes behind the tie knot: the collar is a size too big, or the tie is pulling it open.
  • One suit worn five days running, which gives the cloth no time to recover.

Care for tailoring the way the cloth asks. Woolmark's guide says woven wool belongs on shaped or padded hangers, that a wool garment hung in a steamy bathroom loses its creases, and that wool should always be pressed with steam. So brush the suit after wearing it, hang it, rest it, and send it to the cleaner when it is dirty rather than on a schedule.

How we chose

Suits had to be wool or wool blends for an office from fall into winter, in navy, charcoal or gray, each offered in at least five sizes when we checked; we left out mohair evening suits and tuxedos. Shirts are white or pale blue, and every piece was judged by its photograph rather than its listed color. A shirt sold as light blue photographed turquoise, so it went. So did a striped shirt whose stripe turned out to be warm brown, and a brown plaid jacket whose overcheck combined two colors our stylists keep apart. The suit-day shoes are lace-ups and monk straps on dress soles or slim rubber ones, and the belts have plain buckles with at most a small engraved or enameled mark, which ruled out the large logo plaques. Each bag closes at the top, and where a listing gives dimensions, we checked them against a laptop. The edit spans 23 houses, all new pieces, each live on Vêtir when we chose it.

Frequently asked questions

What should men wear to work?

Match your office's level. In a suit office, a navy or charcoal suit, a white or pale blue shirt, a tie and black oxfords. In business casual, a sport coat over wool trousers that do not match it, with a shirt or fine knit. In a creative office, a knit, tailored trousers and leather sneakers or loafers.

What is business casual for men?

Separates instead of a suit: a navy or gray sport coat, wool trousers in a different shade, an open-collar shirt or a fine knit, and leather shoes. The tie is optional, and jeans count only where your office says so.

Do men still need to wear a tie to work?

In law, banking and client-facing roles, often yes. Elsewhere, an open collar or a knit polo is usually enough, but keep a tie in your bag for the meeting that appears at short notice.

Can men wear jeans to the office?

Only where the dress code allows them. Wear them dark, straight and unripped, with a sport coat or a fine knit and black, gray or white shoes.

What color shoes go with a navy suit?

Our stylists wear black with navy: black cap-toe oxfords, monk straps or derbies, with a black belt. Burgundy shoes and a burgundy belt are the alternative when you want something less severe.

How many suits does a man need for work?

Two worn on alternate days give each suit the 24-hour rest the Woolmark Company recommends for wool. Three, in navy, charcoal and mid-gray, give a full five-day rotation with room for one to be at the cleaner.
