The Best Designer Crossbody Bags, Chosen by Strap Drop, Weight and Closure

The best designer crossbody bags are the ones you forget you are wearing. That comes down to four things you can check before you buy: a strap drop that puts the bag at your hip (or an adjustable one), a closure that cannot fall open, room for your phone to lie flat, and a weight close to a pound or less before anything goes in. For most women that means a small leather camera, flap or zip-top bag for every day, a zip-top nylon for travel and a chain-strap wallet or small flap for evening.
Below, our editors show how to judge each of those four points using the specifications the houses and their stockists publish, then pick the bags worth buying for everyday, travel, phone-only, evening and investment, from Dior and Saint Laurent to Khaite and The Row.
How to choose a luxury crossbody bag
In Vêtir's own site search, bags were the third most-searched product type between August 6 and September 26, 2026, after dresses and tops, and a crossbody bag has more practical questions to answer than most shapes. Here is how to answer them.
Strap drop: measure yourself first
The drop is the distance from the top of the strap to the top of the bag. To find yours, run a tape from the top of your shoulder, diagonally across your body, to where you want the bag to sit, usually at the hip bone. Among the bags in this guide, most of those designed to be worn across the body list fixed drops of about 18 to 23 inches. Shorter straps, such as the 16 to 19.5 inches Dior lists for its Saddle, sit higher on the body, which suits a sweater better than a coat.
Adjustability matters more than the number, because a winter coat changes everything. Celine's Trio Flap, for example, adjusts on sliding knots from 12.2 to 25.5 inches, and Loewe's Joya and Saint Laurent's nylon City camera bag also give you a short and a long setting. Any of those will sit well over a sweater and, let out, over a winter coat.
Size versus your phone
Start with the phone you carry. Apple lists the iPhone 18 Pro Max at 6.43 by 3.07 inches and 0.34 inch deep (Apple). Houses quote outside dimensions, and leather, seams and gussets take up room, so for a phone that size in a slim case look for at least 7 inches in one direction and 3.5 in the other. Tall, narrow phone bags, such as Jil Sander's small Tangle and Balenciaga's Le City phone holder, hold it upright and slim at the hip; east-west shapes, such as Loewe's Joya, hold it lying down, which makes it easier to pull out but adds width.
What each size really holds
Some houses now tell you exactly. Gucci says its small Ophidia camera bag fits a Pro Max or Plus iPhone, AirPods, a small wallet and a lipstick; Gabriela Hearst says its phone pouch fits an iPhone Pro Max; and Dior says a phone, a card holder, sunglasses and a lipstick fit both its Saddle and its small Médaillon flap bag. As a rule of thumb from the bags in this guide: a phone pouch of about 5 by 8 inches takes a phone, a few cards and a key; a small camera or flap bag 8 to 9 inches wide adds a card case, sunglasses in a slim case and a lipstick; a medium bag of 10 to 11 inches, like Loewe's Amazona 180, adds a small pouch, a charger or a folded scarf. If you carry glasses in a hard case every day, go up a size.
Weight: your phone may outweigh your bag
Weight is rarely listed, but Dior and Gucci publish it on their own product pages, and the spread is wide.
| Bag | Material and strap | Weight (empty) |
|---|---|---|
| Dior Bow pouch | Lambskin, adjustable leather strap | 7.5 oz (210 g) |
| Gucci Ophidia small camera bag | GG coated fabric, leather strap | 11.5 oz |
| Dior Médaillon small flap bag | Cotton jacquard and calfskin, sliding chain | 21 oz (600 g) |
| Dior Saddle bag with strap | Calfskin, metal D stirrup, leather strap | 28 oz (800 g) |
| For comparison: iPhone 18 Pro Max | Phone only | 8.78 oz (249 g) |
The iPhone 18 Pro Max alone weighs 8.78 ounces, more than Dior's lambskin Bow pouch. Three things add weight: chain straps, heavy metal hardware and structured calfskin. Nylon, technical fabrics and soft lambskin keep it down. For a bag you will wear all day on foot, aim for about a pound empty; save the heavier icons for days when you are mostly in cars, restaurants and offices.
Closure security
From most to least secure: a zip top (Khaite's Augustina, The Row's Nu Twin, Saint Laurent's Lou camera bag); a turn-lock or clasp (Toteme's T-Lock, Gabriela Hearst's turnlock phone pouch, Celine's Triomphe closure); a magnetic flap (Tod's T Timeless, Tom Ford's Tara); and an open top, which we would not choose for travel or crowds. Whatever the closure, wear the opening against your body, and in a crowd move the bag to the front.
Hardware and straps
Chain straps look dressier but weigh more and can rub on fine wool coats; a flat leather strap is kinder to both. A detachable strap earns its keep: Fendi's Tube wallet on chain comes with an adjustable leather strap and a fine chain, so it can be a clutch, an underarm bag or a crossbody. Match the hardware to the watch and jewelry you wear most, and you will reach for the bag more often.
Leather or fabric
Grained and pebbled calfskin, like Khaite's Augustina or Chloé's grained Marcie, hides scratches and copes with light rain, which is why it makes the best everyday crossbody. Smooth box calfskin looks sharper but shows marks; Khaite says the box calfskin of its Blake will develop a patina, so buy it if you like a bag that ages. Lambskin is soft and light but scuffs more easily. Suede, like Loewe's Amazona 180, belongs to dry days. Nylon and coated canvas, such as Prada's Re-Nylon and Gucci's GG coated fabric, are the travel materials: light, wipeable and forgiving.
The best designer crossbody bags for everyday
An everyday crossbody holds a phone, a card case, keys, sunglasses and a lipstick without bulging, closes securely and survives rain. Khaite's small Augustina is a lightweight zip-top hobo with an integrated strap that adjusts from shoulder to crossbody. The Row's Nu Twin is flat and zipped, so it sits close to the body. Saint Laurent's quilted Lou, zipped and with a flat pocket at the back, is the classic camera shape. Chloé's Marcie saddle bag, in grained calfskin with its saddle stitching and tassels, is the softer, more bohemian choice, and Toteme's T-Lock, with its turn-lock closure, is the best value here.
- Jeans, a crewneck and a camel coat: a cognac saddle bag worn over the coat, strap lengthened so the bag sits on the hip.
- Tailoring: a black camera bag on a slim strap, worn under the blazer's open front rather than over the lapel.
- Weekend knits: a zip-top hobo in pebbled leather, which shrugs off rain and scuffs.

The best crossbody bags for travel
A crossbody bag for travel needs a zip, a light and wipeable fabric, and at least one outside pocket for a boarding pass or a card you use every few minutes. Prada's Re-Nylon shoulder bag comes with a detachable zip pouch, and its Explore crossbody has flap pockets on the sides. Saint Laurent's nylon City camera bag adds a front zip pocket and a snap pocket at the back. Gucci's small Ophidia is in GG coated fabric, which wipes clean, Stella McCartney's nylon Dartmoor has zip pockets on the outside, and Burberry's Horseshoe puts the house check on a technical weave.
On travel days, wear the bag in front, zip toward your body, and keep your passport in an inside pocket rather than the outside one. For the rest of the outfit, our guide to dressing for travel covers layers and shoes.

Small crossbody bags and phone pouches
A phone pouch is the most useful small bag for city days, when you carry a phone, a card and keys and nothing else. The trade-off is organization, so look at the inside. Celine's Trio Flap has two compartments and a central zip pocket. Dior's Bow pouch has two card slots behind a zip. Balenciaga's Le City phone holder adds a front zip pocket and a removable mirror, and its strap has a shoulder pad. Bottega Veneta's Solstice is an Intrecciato envelope that works as a pouch or a crossbody. For more on the smallest leather bags, see our guide to the mini leather bag.

Day to night: which crossbody silhouettes work for evening
By day, the shapes that work are the practical ones: camera bags, zip-top hobos, saddle bags and nylon. By night, the crossbody gets smaller and shinier. A wallet on chain is the most useful evening crossbody, because it holds a phone and cards and most styles turn into a clutch when you unclip or tuck away the strap. Saint Laurent's small quilted wallet on chain comes in satin on a long crossbody strap. Dior's small Médaillon flap bag hangs from a sliding chain. Alaïa's heart-shaped Le Coeur in patent leather and Valentino Garavani's Rockstud flap bag add a statement without adding bulk.
For a black-tie dinner, shorten the strap and wear it on the shoulder, or tuck it away and carry the bag as a clutch. For clutches and other evening shapes, see our guide to the best evening bags.

Investment crossbody bags
These are the bags to buy for the long term, and each has a practical caveat worth knowing. Dior's Saddle, with its D stirrup and magnetic pull, is the heaviest bag in this guide that lists a weight, at 28 ounces, and its strap is short for crossbody wear, so it is best over a sweater rather than a coat. Celine's Teen Triomphe, in shiny calfskin with a Triomphe clasp and three compartments, has a strap that adjusts from shoulder to crossbody. Loewe's Amazona 180 in suede has a zip all the way around and a removable strap. Khaite's Blake, in box calfskin that the house says will develop a patina, has a three-part nappa-lined interior that keeps a phone away from keys.
Chloé's Paddington was the fifth-hottest product in fashion in the last quarter of 2025, according to the Lyst Index, and the crossbody version turns the padlock bag into a slouchy hobo. Fendi's small Baguette Soft comes with a detachable handle and strap, so it can be carried by hand or across the body. How to wear a crossbody bag
- Over or under the coat: over, almost always. A bag under a coat pulls the fabric and is awkward to reach. Lengthen the strap so the bag sits at the hip.
- Front or side: at the side for walking, at the front in crowds, on public transport and at airports.
- With tailoring: a small bag on a slim strap, worn across a shirt or knit under an open blazer, keeps the jacket's line clean.
- With a work tote: carry a small crossbody for your phone and cards and a tote for the laptop; you can leave the tote under a desk or a table and keep the essentials on you. Our guide to choosing a designer tote bag has the other half.
- Proportion: the bigger the coat, the more a tiny bag disappears; with a long, voluminous coat, choose a camera or saddle bag over a phone pouch.

How we chose
We considered only houses on Vêtir's luxury list, and checked that every bag was new, in stock and available for US delivery; we excluded pre-owned listings. We favored bags whose makers or their stockists publish the strap drop, closure and dimensions, and quoted those published figures rather than estimates. We looked for adjustable or detachable straps, secure closures and interiors that hold a large phone, and covered five uses: everyday, travel, phone-only, evening and investment. Prices run from about $800 to about $5,400. Our shop modules refresh automatically, so if a bag sells out, the closest in-stock alternative takes its place; for the full range, browse our crossbody bags and mini bags.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good strap drop for a crossbody bag?
Measure from the top of your shoulder, across your body, to your hip, and buy a strap that reaches that length. Most bags in this guide that are designed for crossbody wear list fixed drops between about 18 and 23 inches. If you plan to wear the bag over a winter coat, choose an adjustable strap with length to spare.
Will my phone fit in a small crossbody bag?
Check the dimensions against your phone. A Pro Max-size phone is about 6.4 by 3.1 inches, so the bag needs roughly 7 by 3.5 inches inside. Some houses, including Gucci and Gabriela Hearst, state which phones fit.
What is the best crossbody bag for travel?
A zip-top bag in nylon or coated canvas, light enough to wear all day, with an outside pocket for a boarding pass and an inside pocket for your passport. Wear it at the front with the zip against your body. Prada's Re-Nylon styles, Saint Laurent's nylon City camera bag and Stella McCartney's Dartmoor all fit that description.
How heavy should a crossbody bag be?
For all-day wear, about a pound or less empty. Chain straps, heavy hardware and structured calfskin add weight; nylon and soft lambskin keep it down.
Can you wear a crossbody bag with a dress or to the office?
Yes. Choose a small leather bag on a slim strap or a wallet on chain, and wear it across a dress or under an open blazer. For evening, detach the strap and carry it as a clutch.
Should you wear a crossbody bag over or under your coat?
Over it. A bag worn under a coat drags the fabric and is hard to reach. Lengthen the strap so the bag sits at your hip on top of the coat, and move it to the front in crowds.
