What to Wear to the Kentucky Derby: Dress Codes by Seat, Hats, Shoes and Weather

For the Kentucky Derby on Saturday, May 1, 2027, wear a day dress or a light skirt suit in a spring print or a pastel, a hat or fascinator scaled to your seat, block heels or wedges you can stand in for ten hours, and a layer, because Louisville mornings in early May can start in the 40s. What to wear to the Kentucky Derby depends mostly on where you sit. Churchill Downs publishes standing dress codes for its clubhouse rooms, from Track Casual on Millionaires Row to Business Casual on the Turf Club Terrace, and Derby Day custom runs well above all of them. Below, our editors go seat by seat, then cover the Derby dress, hats and fascinators, shoes, the bag and umbrella rules, the weather, and what to wear to the Kentucky Oaks the day before.
Kentucky Derby 2027: the dates and the length of the day
The 153rd Kentucky Derby runs on Saturday, May 1, 2027, at Churchill Downs in Louisville. The Kentucky Oaks, the race for three-year-old fillies, is the day before, on Friday, April 30. Many guests go to both, so plan two outfits that share a hat, a bag and a layer.
Dress for the whole day, not the two minutes of the race. At last year's Derby, according to Churchill Downs' event information page, the gates opened at 9 a.m., the Derby was scheduled to go off at 6:57 p.m. and the last race at 8:33 p.m. On Oaks Day, the Oaks itself was scheduled for 8:40 p.m., close to sunset. Every guest was also subject to a metal-detector scan at the gates throughout Derby Week. The track posts each year's schedule and security rules on the same page, so check it for 2027 before you go. Count on lines, stairs and a great deal of standing, and settle your shoes and your layer before you choose the dress.
The Kentucky Derby dress code, seat by seat
There is no single Derby dress code. Churchill Downs' own Derby style guide for 2026 said there are no hard-and-fast rules for Derby dressing, because what you wear depends on where you spend the day, then added the rule regulars already know: the higher your seat in the clubhouse, the dressier the room. What the track does publish is three standing dress codes for its clubhouse rooms. They are the track's standing codes, not rules written for the Derby, and the same page notes that most race days don't call for Derby dressing. On Derby Day, nearly everyone dresses well above them.
| Where you are | Churchill Downs' standing code | What we'd wear on Derby Day |
|---|---|---|
| Infield (general admission) | Not on any of the three written lists. Last year, infield guests could bring a collapsible chair without a canopy and a tarp or blanket smaller than 10 by 10 feet. | A cotton or linen sundress or shirtdress you can sit on the grass in, flat espadrilles or leather sandals, and a packable straw hat. |
| Reserved seats and boxes outside the rooms below | Not on the written lists. If your ticket names a room or box, check whether it appears below. | A printed day dress or a skirt suit, a sun hat with a real brim and a low block heel. You're outdoors all day, so plan for sun and for rain. |
| Track Casual rooms, including Millionaires Row, Skye Terrace, the Stakes Room, Aristides Lounge, the Homestretch Club and the Winner's Circle Suites | Jackets optional. Dresses, pantsuits, dress jeans, dress shorts and slacks are fine, and so are golf shorts and capris. No worn or torn clothing, crop tops, athletic wear, swimwear, frayed denim or flip-flops. | Ignore the shorts. A structured printed dress or a pale suit, with a hat or fascinator you can wear at a table. |
| Smart Casual rooms, including the Jockey Club Suites, Turf Club Boxes, Derby Room, Matt Winn's Steakhouse, Starting Gate Suites and the Triple Crown Room and Balcony | The same list minus golf shorts and capris. No cargo shorts, T-shirts, crop tops, athletic wear, swimwear, frayed denim or tennis shoes. | A dress or a skirt suit with polished heels or loafers. No sneakers of any kind. |
| Business Casual rooms: the Turf Club Terrace and Balcony, Finish Line Suites, Spires Terrace and Suites, Trophy Room and Directors Room, plus the Roses Lounge during Derby Week, when it becomes the Turf Club Roses Lounge | Jackets, dresses, pantsuits, slacks and capris. No jeans or denim, shorts, T-shirts, crop tops, athletic wear, swimwear or flip-flops. | No denim at all, white jeans included. Tailoring or a dress, and heels you can walk to the paddock in. |
Two cautions. Millionaires Row's written code is only Track Casual, which on paper allows dress jeans, but the clubhouse gets dressier the higher you go, so dress to the room rather than the minimum. And if your ticket is for a room that isn't on Churchill Downs' list, ask your host or the ticket office before you shop. Trousers are correct everywhere: pantsuits and slacks are on the approved list in all three written codes.
What to wear to the Kentucky Derby: the dress, the suit and the colors
Silhouette. A fitted bodice with a full or A-line skirt that ends between the knee and mid-calf is the Derby's most reliable shape. It moves on stairs, sits well in a box seat and keeps its line after hours of wear. A sheath or a shirtdress suits the dining rooms. Save floor-length gowns for evening events: hems drag on grandstand stairs and pick up dirt on the lawns, while very short skirts are awkward on tiered steps.
Fabric. Choose fabrics with body: cotton poplin, faille, mikado, silk twill and linen blended with silk. They hold their shape through a long day and hide creases from sitting better than fluid silks. Silk satin and charmeuse spot in rain and wrinkle wherever you sit, heavy crepe and wool are too warm by a sunny afternoon, and clingy jersey shows everything in humidity.
Color and print. Florals, stripes, gingham and clear pastels are the Derby's native language, and Churchill Downs' 2026 style guide, with the guest style editor Zanna Roberts Rassi, pushed saturated color and bold prints further still. Black is allowed in every written code, but it reads heavy at a daytime race; if you love it, choose a black-ground print and let the flowers do the work. A bright hat or shoe can carry a neutral dress.
The suit. A skirt suit or a trouser suit is correct in every room, and the 2026 style guide singled out the skirt suit as a Derby look of the season. Choose a pale color or a small check, add a silk blouse or a fine knit shell, and let the hat be the only statement.
The houses. Houses that do the Derby dress especially well include Oscar de la Renta for structured florals in faille and poplin, Emilia Wickstead for high-necked fit-and-flare midis, Carolina Herrera for full-skirted prints and Zimmermann for printed linen. For more, browse designer midi dresses or our edit of spring florals.
Four formulas that work:
- Box seat, sunny forecast: a printed cotton or silk-twill midi dress, a wide-brimmed straw hat in the dress's lightest color, raffia espadrille wedges and a small raffia top-handle bag.
- Millionaires Row: a structured faille or jacquard dress, a boater or a fascinator, navy block-heel slingbacks and a leather top-handle bag.
- Cool, cloudy Derby: a long-sleeved floral midi dress, a short trench or a cropped tweed jacket over it, and closed leather pumps with a 2-inch heel.
- Turf Club, in trousers: an ivory trouser suit, a silk blouse, a straw fedora and flat leather loafers or Mary Janes.

Kentucky Derby hats and fascinators: how to choose
Churchill Downs' 2026 style guide concedes that you can come without a hat or fascinator, then asks where the fun would be in that. It also notes that more women have chosen fascinators over the last decade, alongside feathered, floral and sculptural hats. Choose by seat first, then by scale.
- A wide brim (a sun hat, capeline or picture hat) for uncovered seats and the infield, where shade matters. In tiered seating, think of the person behind you and keep the brim to about the width of your shoulders.
- A boater or a fedora for tailoring, shirtdresses and the dining rooms. A flat, structured brim looks crisp all day and survives a crowd.
- A fascinator, percher or headband for indoor rooms and busy concourses. It clears doorways, doesn't bump the guest at the next table and can be pinned into hair that has to last until evening.
Scale. One statement at a time: a big hat with a solid dress, or a busy print with a smaller hat in one color pulled from it. Match the hat to the dress's secondary color rather than its main one, then repeat the hat's color in your shoes or your bag.
Fit. Measure around your head just above the ears and buy to that size; a hat you keep adjusting will be off by noon. Add an elastic or a pair of hat pins for wind, and try the hat on with your hair done the way you'll wear it on the day. Fascinators sit on a comb, clip or headband, so test yours by shaking your head. The 2026 style guide also listed its featured Kentucky Derby milliners if you want a piece from a specialist. Our edit below sticks to straw hats from fashion houses such as Roger Vivier and Tom Ford; for more shapes, browse designer hats.

Shoes for grass, stairs and a ten-hour day
At last year's Derby, the gates opened at 9 a.m. and the last race was scheduled for 8:33 p.m. That is a day of security lines, stairs, paddock walks and standing, much of it on grass. Three rules:
- Keep the heel low and wide. A block heel of about 2 inches (45 to 60 millimeters) or a wedge spreads your weight; stilettos sink into turf and catch on stairs.
- Choose leather if rain is possible. Nearly half of all Derby Days on record have had rain (see the weather section below), and suede and satin mark easily. Save espadrilles for a dry forecast.
- Carry a flat that meets the dress code. The 2026 style guide suggested packing comfortable shoes or flip-flops to change into, but flip-flops are ruled out in the Track Casual and Business Casual rooms. Carry soft leather ballet flats instead.
Wear new shoes at home for a few evenings before the race and pack blister plasters. For low block heels, look to Manolo Blahnik and Roger Vivier; for raffia wedges, Aquazzura; for soft leather flats, Ferragamo. For more wedges, see designer espadrilles.

The bag rule, the umbrella ban and a plan for rain
Last year, Churchill Downs allowed each guest one bag no larger than 12 by 6 by 12 inches during Derby Week, and its prohibited-items list included umbrellas of any size. The track says the list can change, so check its 2027 event information and guest rules before you pack.
The rule favors a small top-handle bag or a crossbody you can wear hands-free while you hold a program and a mint julep. Raffia and straw suit daytime racing; a structured leather bag suits the dining rooms. The bags we picked for this edit all measure under 11 inches wide on their listings, but check the dimensions of any bag against the rule. With no umbrellas allowed last year, rain protection had to come from what you wore, and it is safest to plan the same way: a cotton-gabardine trench, a hat with a brim and leather shoes. More options are in our top-handle bags.

Louisville weather in early May: dress for the gate and the finish
Derby weather is close to a coin toss. The National Weather Service office in Louisville keeps weather records for every Derby and Oaks: rain fell at some point on 72 of 150 Derby Days (48 percent) and on 79 of 150 Oaks Days (53 percent). The range is wide. Since 2021, Derby Day highs have run from 56°F (2026) to 83°F (2024), and the 2026 Derby Day low was 42°F. The records run from a high of just 47°F in 1935 and 1957 to 94°F in 1959. These readings come from Louisville's official weather station rather than the track itself, but the lesson holds.
So dress in two layers. A sleeveless or short-sleeved dress under a light trench, a cropped jacket or a fine cashmere cardigan covers a cool morning, a warm afternoon and, on Oaks Day, an evening race. A trench in cotton gabardine sheds a shower, and if umbrellas are banned again, it may be the most useful piece in this guide. Burberry's cotton-gabardine trench is still the benchmark; shorter trenches that end at the hip or the knee look best over a midi dress. Add sunscreen and sunglasses if your seats are uncovered. What to wear to the Kentucky Oaks
The Oaks, on Friday, April 30, 2027, has its own color: pink. Churchill Downs encourages Oaks guests to work pink into their outfits, "from hats to handkerchiefs, suits to sundresses," in honor of the Oaks' official flower, the stargazer lily, and of the track's fundraising for women's health. The day includes the Survivors Parade for breast and ovarian cancer survivors, and the winning filly receives a garland of lilies rather than the Derby's roses.
- One pink piece: a pink hat or pink shoes with a navy, white or green dress.
- Pink in one shade, head to toe: a blush dress, blush sandals and a natural straw hat. A single tone reads polished rather than costume.
- Pink with a partner color: pink with red, green or navy all work in daylight.
- A pink print: a floral on a pink ground honors the tradition without a solid block of color.
Because the Oaks ran into the evening last year, bring the same layer you'd bring on Saturday. Our edit below mixes solid pinks with pink-ground prints.

How we chose
We chose dresses by fabric weight and hem length for a ten-hour outdoor day, hats by brim, structure and fit, shoes by heel height and footing on grass, and bags by the dimensions on each listing against Churchill Downs' 2026 bag rule. Every piece is new, from a top luxury house on Vêtir, and was verified live when we built this guide; the edits refresh themselves as pieces sell out. Sporting and society days, from the US Open to country-club events, are among the occasions clients bring to our AI stylist. If you already own the hat or the dress, ask our AI stylist to build the rest of the look around it, or book one of our personal stylists.
Frequently asked questions
What is the dress code for the Kentucky Derby?
There isn't a single one. Churchill Downs' standing dress codes cover its clubhouse rooms: Track Casual (including Millionaires Row), Smart Casual (including the Jockey Club Suites) and Business Casual (including the Turf Club Terrace and the Finish Line Suites), where denim and shorts aren't allowed. The infield isn't on any of those lists. The track's style guide sums up the rest as "dress to impress," and on Derby Day most guests dress well above the written minimum, in a dress or suit and a hat.
Do you have to wear a hat to the Kentucky Derby?
No. The 2026 style guide says hats aren't required, but they are one of the race's defining traditions. If you skip one, wear statement earrings or a bright shoe so the look still feels complete.
Can you wear pants to the Kentucky Derby?
Yes. Pantsuits and slacks are on the approved list in all three of Churchill Downs' written codes, including the Business Casual rooms. A tailored trouser suit with a silk blouse and a straw fedora is as correct as a dress.
What should you not wear to the Kentucky Derby?
Crop tops, athletic wear and swimwear are ruled out in all three clubhouse codes, and frayed or torn denim in the Track Casual and Smart Casual rooms. Flip-flops are banned in the Track Casual and Business Casual rooms and tennis shoes in the Smart Casual ones, while the Business Casual rooms exclude all denim, shorts and T-shirts. Beyond the rules, skip floor-length gowns, stilettos and anything you can't sit, climb and stand in for ten hours.
What color do you wear to the Kentucky Oaks?
Pink. Churchill Downs encourages Oaks guests to wear it, from hats to shoes, in honor of the stargazer lily and of its fundraising for women's health.
Can you bring an umbrella to the Kentucky Derby?
Not last year: umbrellas of any size were on Churchill Downs' prohibited list for Derby Week 2026, and bags were limited to one per guest no larger than 12 by 6 by 12 inches. Check the 2027 list before you go, and plan to stay dry with a trench and a brimmed hat.
