Men's Ski Outfits: Six Complete Looks and the Moncler Grenoble Pieces Behind Them

Men's ski outfits work when every piece has a job and the colors stay simple. Start with the jacket and choose it for your weather: a Gore-Tex jacket if your trips bring wet snow or spring rain at the base, a down ski jacket for cold, dry days. Add ski pants or a bib, a thin mid-layer, a fitted base layer, a helmet, goggles, padded gloves, a neck warmer and one pair of wool ski socks, then lug-sole boots for after the last run. Below are six complete outfits and the luxury ski wear behind them, most of it from Moncler Grenoble, Moncler's skiwear line, with Zegna, Brunello Cucinelli, Prada and a few others where Moncler has a gap.

We also explain which jackets are waterproof and which only shed snow, how Moncler sizes and which pieces are worth the money. Layering theory, waterproof ratings and goggle lenses live in our guide to what to wear skiing; this page is about the clothes.

Men's ski outfits: six complete looks

Every look is built from the edits below. Change the colors if you like, but keep the logic: the jacket answers the forecast, the pants protect as well as the jacket does, and one piece carries the color while the rest stay quiet.

  • The storm day. Moncler Grenoble's black Balmhorn, a down jacket built on a Gore-Tex laminate with heat-sealed seams, over the black Insulated Gore-Tex bib, with a black Polartec turtleneck underneath, Prada's Gore-Tex and leather ski gloves and a black helmet. It is the only outfit here that is Gore-Tex from collar to ankle, which makes it the one for wet snow and dripping chairlifts.
  • The cold, clear day. The navy Montgetech, a down jacket in four-way stretch nylon, over black Gore-Tex insulated ski pants, with an ivory Polartec half-zip and navy padded gloves. Navy over black reads crisp against bright snow.
  • The shell skier. The beige Hinterburgs, an uninsulated Gore-Tex shell with underarm vents, over the olive Gore-Tex bib, with the olive padded zip-up hoodie as the warm layer, an ivory Polartec turtleneck and olive padded gloves. It suits spring skiing, men who run hot and anyone who hikes for a few turns, because the warmth sits in a layer you can strip off and stuff in a pack.
  • The wool suit. The charcoal Ardiden jacket and the matching wool ski pants, both in wool covert with a water-resistant, windproof finish, over a black knit half-zip turtleneck, with Brunello Cucinelli's gray cashmere neck warmer and a black helmet. A matched suit looks like tailoring on the mountain; keep it for cold, dry days, since the cloth is water-resistant rather than waterproof.
  • The red jacket. The crimson Airolo, an insulated jacket in technical corduroy, over the beige Gore-Tex bib, with an ivory Polartec turtleneck and olive padded gloves: the four pieces in our lead image. For the full statement, wear it with the matching crimson corduroy bib.
  • Camel and olive. The camel Fellberg over the olive Gore-Tex bib, a dark brown Polartec turtleneck, chocolate padded gloves and the olive Trailgrip Après boots for the walk home. Our stylists keep black away from camel, so the dark notes here are olive and chocolate.

Two habits separate a good ski outfit from an expensive one. Match the pants to the jacket's weather protection, because a waterproof jacket over water-repellent pants still leaves you wet where you sit on a damp chairlift. And buy the jacket in the darkest color you can live with if you only own one: olive, navy, black or charcoal will still look right in five seasons.

The men's ski jacket: Gore-Tex or down?

The first decision is not the color. It is whether the jacket is waterproof or only water-repellent, and Moncler Grenoble's men's ski jackets divide cleanly along that line.

The best Gore-Tex ski jackets for men

Every jacket in this edit lists a Gore-Tex laminate or a waterproof three-layer build, and they come in three weights.

  • The shell. The Hinterburgs is a Gore-Tex shell with no insulation, underarm vents and an adjustable hem; the Vernon is a three-layer jacket in four-way stretch nylon with a hood cut to go over a helmet. A shell is only as warm as what you wear under it, which is the point: it works from a March afternoon to a January morning with the right mid-layer.
  • Gore-Tex with synthetic fill. The Staz adds PrimaLoft insulation to a short Gore-Tex jacket. The Lambir has synthetic padding, a powder skirt and two pockets that matter on a lift: a dedicated ski-pass pocket and an inside pocket for a phone.
  • Gore-Tex with down. The Balmhorn puts a down and feather fill (90 percent down, according to the listing) under a Gore-Tex laminate, with heat-sealed seams, a powder skirt and a RECCO reflector, the passive rescue reflector our main ski guide explains.

If you will own one ski jacket and ski whatever the weather does, the Balmhorn is the one we would buy: warm enough for the lift, sealed against wet snow, and plain enough in black or olive to last. The Hinterburgs is the better buy for spring skiers and for men who already own good mid-layers.

Down ski jackets for cold, dry days

The Montgetech, Fellberg, Angren, Isorno and Kasanka are the puffers of the line, and they feel warmest on a long lift ride. None of the five names a waterproof laminate such as Gore-Tex; Moncler describes the Montgetech and the Fellberg as windproof and water-repellent. That is plenty for cold, dry snow and less reassuring in rain at the base. Within the group, the Montgetech and Fellberg are cut in four-way stretch nylon, the Fellberg adds PrimaLoft Gold Active insulation at the sides and underarms (where you sweat), and the Montgetech's hood detaches. The exception is the Irrenberg, which the house describes as waterproof as well as windproof: a two-layer stretch nylon over down, with wrist gaiters and a ski-pass pocket.

The Isorno and the Kasanka list a plain nylon shell with no elastane, so they will not move with you the way the stretch jackets do; size them with a little room across the back. For down jackets to wear in town rather than on the mountain, see the best men's winter coats, and browse every men's quilted jacket.

Wool, corduroy and cashmere: ski suits with a past

Moncler began in 1952 in Monestier-de-Clermont, a mountain village near Grenoble, and was the official supplier of the French downhill ski team at the 1968 Winter Olympics in Grenoble, according to the Moncler Group's history of the brand; the Moncler Grenoble line itself debuted in New York in 2010. The current collection looks to the American West. Moncler Grenoble showed its fall 2026 collection in Aspen at the end of January, the first time the house had taken over a US ski destination, with Western references running through it, as W Magazine reported.

That shows in the cloth. The Ardiden jacket and its matching ski pants are wool covert that the listings say is inspired by 1950s Aspen, given a water-resistant, windproof finish. The Airolo jacket and the corduroy bib are a technical corduroy in a two-layer build, with wrist gaiters, a powder skirt and powder cuffs; the bib's suspenders detach. Brunello Cucinelli makes a paneled cotton corduroy ski jacket in a relaxed cut, and Zegna a cashmere ski jacket filled with down.

Wear these as suits. Jacket and pants in the same cloth look deliberate; a wool jacket over nylon pants looks as if half the outfit went missing. All of them are for cold, dry days rather than storms, and the charcoal wool is the one that will still look right in ten years.

Men's ski pants or a bib?

A bib rises to the chest on suspenders, so snow stays out of your back in a fall or in deep powder, and the waistband stays put when you bend to buckle a boot. It is also the fix for a long torso: if a jacket fits your shoulders but rides above your waistband when you reach, a bib makes the gap irrelevant. Pants are simpler at lunch, in the restroom and on warm spring afternoons. The corduroy bib, with suspenders that come off, gives you both.

Moncler Grenoble's options, from the most protective down:

  • The Insulated Gore-Tex bib: a Gore-Tex laminate with PrimaLoft Active insulation, heat-sealed seams, powder cuffs and a RECCO reflector, in black, olive and beige.
  • The Gore-Tex insulated pants: the same laminate and powder cuffs without the bib, in black and camel.
  • The stretch insulated pants: a four-way stretch nylon with a water- and windproof finish and PrimaLoft Active insulation, which the house says is quick-drying.
  • The poplin ski pants: unpadded stretch poplin, water-repellent and windproof, with hem protection; the pair to wear under a shell in spring.

Burberry's Colby ski pant, in bright yellow, is the outlier. Its listing gives the fabric (polyamide) and nothing about waterproofing, so treat it as a fair-weather pant and a way to be easy to spot on the hill. See all men's ski clothing on Vêtir.

Mid-layers: where the warmth is decided

Choose the mid-layer by the jacket it goes under. Under a down ski jacket it should be thin: the Polartec half-zip is enough. Under a shell it has to do the jacket's work, which is what Moncler Grenoble's padded zip-up hoodie is for; the listing describes it as a mid-layer for wear under shell jackets, with a down fill, two-layer stretch fabric and a mesh lining. The Araripe goes further, a mid-layer down jacket with PrimaLoft Active insulation that the house says dries fast.

Moncler's hybrids are the clever pieces. The padded Polartec zip-up and the wool-blend padded cardigan put down in front, where the wind hits on a lift, and stretch fleece or knit at the back and sleeves, where you move and sweat. The heavier cardigan, in thick wool with a down front, doubles as light outerwear in milder weather, according to the listing, which makes it the mid-layer that also goes to lunch. The Evans down vest keeps your core warm with your arms free for poles, and its collar can be worn up or folded down like a shirt collar. Brunello Cucinelli's cashmere-blend half-zip is the knit option, made for skiing and handsome enough for the lodge.

The common mistake is a mid-layer thicker than the jacket was cut for. If you have to fight the zip, you are crushing the down you paid for, and crushed down is cold down.

Base layers: the layer against your skin

The base layer we would buy first is Moncler Grenoble's Polartec turtleneck, in black, ivory or dark brown. It is made from Polartec Power Grid, which Polartec describes as a grid fabric with open air channels that wicks moisture away from the skin and spreads it across the outer surface to evaporate, and lists as ideal for base layers. The ivory Polartec half-zip is the same fabric with a zip you can open on the lift.

For colder days, the knit half-zip turtleneck mixes wool and polyester, and the wool-blend turtleneck sweater is 95 percent virgin wool. Brunello Cucinelli's ski base layer is a lightweight silk blend with a close fit, and Gabriela Hearst's Jermaine, in fine merino, works under a shell on a mild day and alone at dinner; the listing calls it a standard fit that runs true to size. Under ski pants, wear thin wool long johns and nothing bulkier. Browse every men's turtleneck, or our edit of the best men's cashmere sweaters for the evening layer.

Helmet, goggles and ski gloves

Moncler Grenoble's helmet is made with POC, according to the listing, with an ABS shell, adjustable ventilation and a RECCO reflector. Check the certification label inside the shell before you buy; our main ski guide explains the standards. Two rules from Parachute, Canada's injury-prevention charity, are worth knowing too: replace a helmet after a fall or collision even if it looks undamaged, and replace any helmet more than five years old. For fit, Parachute says the front edge should sit two fingers' width above your eyebrows, with room for only one finger under the chinstrap.

Givenchy's Ski Mask is built like a goggle, with a foam backing and a double lens whose inner layer has an anti-fog treatment, according to the listing; Balenciaga's logo goggles, with a pink lens, are the loud choice. For the terrace and warm spring runs, Bottega Veneta's Ribbon mask is a wraparound shield in recycled acetate with 100 percent UVA and UVB protection. Choose a goggle lens by the light you ski in; our main guide explains the tint categories.

Moncler Grenoble's padded gloves are made with the glove specialist Reusch, with leather on the palm and fingertips and a zipped pocket for a heating pad. Prada's ski gloves combine Gore-Tex, leather and knit. Buy padded gloves with a little room at the fingertips: a tight glove compresses its own insulation. See every pair of men's gloves.

Neck warmers, a balaclava, beanies and ski socks

The Moncler Grenoble balaclava is knit from Polartec Power Grid, the base-layer fabric, so it sits under a helmet without crowding it. Neck warmers come in Polartec, in plush virgin wool, in Prada's chunky wool and in Brunello Cucinelli's cashmere rib. The house's ski socks are made with FALKE and are 55 percent wool; they are sold in European size ranges such as 42/43 and 44/45, so check your shoe size in EU numbers. Wear one pair. Keep a beanie for the lift line and the walk to lunch, when the helmet is clipped to your pack: the jacquard alpaca-and-wool one with a pom-pom or the plain logo beanie in wool.

Après-ski and off the slope

The boots come first: ski boots are rigid and slippery off the snow, and a rubber lug sole is what keeps you upright between the lift and the bar. Moncler's Altive Mid has a quilted upper on a Vibram MegaGrip outsole; the Trailgrip Après High adds a Gore-Tex membrane to the same kind of sole and is the pair for slush. The Moon Boot collaboration with Moncler Grenoble comes in two size bands rather than whole sizes, so fit it with the socks you will wear. The Vera Sheal, in nylon and rubber with a fleece and leather lining, is the town boot of the group. For dinner, John Lobb's Sommet is based on a mountain boot from the house's 1950s archive, according to the listing, with waterproof Norwegian welts and a lugged rubber sole inspired by ski boots. Prada's St Moritz lace-up is leather on a rubber lug sole, and TOTEME's suede lace-ups have shearling insoles. Dark brown boots suit olive, camel and cream. Black boots suit black, charcoal and navy.

The village jacket and the knit

Off the mountain, a short down jacket in a softer fabric does better than your ski jacket. Moncler's Himalaya is cotton and nylon with an adjustable hood and a drawstring hem. The Karakorum, in water-repellent micro ripstop, has internal straps that let you carry it over your shoulders once you are indoors, which solves the restaurant problem. Moncler Grenoble's Gelt is a down-filled corduroy shirt jacket, the layer for a dry afternoon in town. Under any of them: a jacquard wool and alpaca crewneck, a wool and cashmere crewneck, or the Vichy zip-up, a wool-blend sweatshirt the listing ties to the Aspen collection.

  • Green and charcoal: the forest green Karakorum, the charcoal wool and cashmere crewneck, black corduroy joggers and black Vera Sheal boots.
  • Camel and oatmeal: the camel Gelt over the jacquard crewneck, olive trousers and John Lobb's brown Sommet.

Our après-ski outfits guide covers the terrace, the lodge and the change for dinner, the best men's winter boots covers soles and construction, and what to wear in Aspen covers the town itself. Browse more men's cold-weather boots.

How a men's ski outfit should fit

  • Moncler numbers its jackets and letters its pants. On our listings the ski jackets run in numbered sizes from 0 to 7, while the ski pants, the base layers and most mid-layers come in letters. A size 3 jacket does not tell you your pants size, so check the house chart for each piece.
  • Size the jacket over your warmest mid-layer. Then cross your arms in front of you as if hugging someone: if the back pulls tight or the sleeves ride up past your wrists, go up a size. Rigid nylon jackets need this room more than stretch ones.
  • Broad shoulders, long torso. Fit the shoulders first. If that leaves the hem short when you bend, pair the jacket with a bib rather than sizing up into a jacket that is loose everywhere else.
  • Check pants in ski boots. The inner powder cuff should close around the boot shell and the outer hem should fall over it. A hem slightly long is fine; one that stops short lets snow in at the first fall.
  • Boots and gloves size differently. Moncler's boots are in European sizes with half sizes, John Lobb's in UK sizes, and the Moon Boot in two size bands. Our winter boots guide has the UK and US conversion.

Which pieces earn their price

Buy once and keep. A Gore-Tex jacket and a Gore-Tex bib in a dark color, a pair of padded leather-palm gloves and two base layers. These do the work on every ski day for years.

Enjoy for a season or two. The crimson corduroy suit, the gold-ribboned shield sunglasses, the pom-pom beanie and Burberry's yellow pants. Buy them for the fun of it, knowing you will want something different later.

Replace on schedule. A helmet is not an heirloom (see Parachute's rules above), so buy the one that fits best rather than the one with the best story.

Where men overspend. A second ski jacket before a good mid-layer. One shell plus the padded hoodie and the Polartec half-zip covers more weather than two puffers. The other mistake is buying the warmest down jacket for a March trip, when a shell and a vest would be more comfortable.

Care. Follow the label sewn into each piece first. For Gore-Tex pieces, Gore-Tex's care instructions say to machine wash at 105°F (40°C) with a small amount of liquid detergent, skip fabric softener and powder detergents, then, once the garment is dry, tumble it for another 20 minutes on a warm, gentle cycle to reactivate the durable water-repellent finish.

How we chose

  • Built for the mountain. On-slope jackets and pants had to describe a ski build: a Gore-Tex laminate, a powder skirt or cuffs, wrist gaiters, sealed seams or water-repellent zips, or a RECCO reflector. Three are here for cloth or color instead, and we say so: Zegna's cashmere jacket, Brunello Cucinelli's corduroy jacket and Burberry's yellow pants. We read each listing's construction and fill, and the text names the pieces that are water-repellent rather than waterproof.
  • Moncler Grenoble first. It has the deepest men's ski range on Vêtir, so it leads every on-slope edit. Zegna, Brunello Cucinelli, Prada, Burberry, Balenciaga, Bottega Veneta, Givenchy, Gabriela Hearst, John Lobb and TOTEME fill the gaps: cashmere and corduroy jackets, eyewear, a fine merino turtleneck and boots.
  • Men's sizing that works. Most picks had at least four sizes in stock when we chose them. A few with three or fewer stay for their color or build: the beige Gore-Tex bib, the dark brown corduroy bib, Brunello Cucinelli's half-zip, Gabriela Hearst's turtleneck and Prada's gloves.
  • Seen, not assumed. We looked at every product photograph: the listing color is not always what the picture shows, and the photograph decided.
  • Price. Base layers start near six hundred dollars; Moncler Grenoble's ski jackets run from just over two thousand to the mid three thousands, and the Zegna and Brunello Cucinelli jackets cost roughly twice that.

Frequently asked questions

What should men wear skiing?

A fitted base layer in a technical fabric or wool, a thin mid-layer such as a fleece half-zip or down vest, a waterproof or water-repellent ski jacket, ski pants or a bib, one pair of wool ski socks, a helmet, goggles, padded gloves and a neck warmer. Add snow boots with a rubber lug sole for after skiing.

What is the difference between Moncler and Moncler Grenoble?

Moncler Grenoble is Moncler's skiwear and mountain line. It debuted in New York in 2010, according to the Moncler Group, and makes the ski jackets, pants, bibs, helmets and gloves; the main Moncler line covers city down jackets, knitwear and footwear.

Are Moncler ski jackets waterproof?

Some are. The Moncler Grenoble jackets that list a Gore-Tex laminate, such as the Balmhorn, Lambir, Staz and Hinterburgs, are described as waterproof and windproof, and the Irrenberg is described as waterproof too. Down ski jackets such as the Montgetech and Fellberg are described as water-repellent, which suits cold, dry snow better than rain.

Should men wear ski pants or bibs?

Bibs if you ski powder, fall often, have a long torso or feel the cold; pants if you value quick lunches and restroom stops or ski mostly in spring. A bib with detachable suspenders, like Moncler Grenoble's corduroy bib, can be worn either way.

How should a men's ski jacket fit?

Try it over your warmest mid-layer. It should close without strain, the sleeves should cover your wrists when you reach forward, and the hem should stay over your waistband when you bend. If the shoulders fit but the hem rides up, wear a bib rather than sizing up.

What do men wear to après-ski?

Snow boots with a lug sole, a short down jacket and a good knit. At the bar straight off the slope, keep the ski pants and base layer, open the jacket and swap the helmet for a beanie.
