Men's Fall Outfits: What to Buy, How to Layer, and Tips to Building a 12-Piece Capsule

Men's fall outfits come down to one skill: dressing in layers you can take off. Start with a shirt or a fine knit, add a middle layer such as a wool overshirt or a cardigan, and finish with a jacket you will not mind carrying by lunchtime: suede for dry days, a field jacket for wet ones. Below the waist, wear flannel, corduroy or dark denim; on your feet, suede boots or loafers. Keep the colors to brown, olive, navy and gray, with cream to lift them. The weather makes the case. In New York, the federal climate normals put an average October day at about 65°F at its warmest and 51°F at its coolest.
Below: how to layer for a day that changes its mind, the overshirt, suede and field jackets, fall knitwear, flannel, tweed and corduroy by cloth weight, the brown, olive and navy palette, boots and loafers, and a 12-piece capsule, with pieces from Zegna, Brunello Cucinelli, Loro Piana, Saint Laurent, Brioni and other houses.
How to layer men's fall outfits
Fall is not one temperature. According to NOAA's 1991–2020 climate normals for Central Park, New York's average daily high falls from about 76°F in September to 65°F in October and 54°F in November, and on an average day in each month the low sits 12 to 14 degrees below the high. A morning outfit that is right at 8 a.m. is too warm at 2 p.m. unless one layer comes off without leaving you underdressed.
Four rules make that work:
- Thin to thick, inside out. Each layer should be finer than the one over it: a poplin shirt or a fine-gauge knit next to the skin, a heavier knit or an overshirt in the middle, a jacket on top. Reverse the order and the jacket pulls across the back.
- Size the middle layer for what goes under it. An overshirt that will be worn over a sweater needs room across the shoulders and a sleeve that covers the knit's cuff. Try it on over the thickest sweater you own.
- Every layer must look finished on its own. When the jacket comes off at lunch, the overshirt or cardigan becomes the outfit, so it needs a clean collar and buttons that close properly.
- Carry the outer layer, not the middle one. A suede or field jacket drapes over an arm or a chair; a cardigan knotted around the shoulders looks like an afterthought.
Three formulas by temperature:
- 65°F to 75°F: a white T-shirt, a wool overshirt worn open, dark straight jeans and suede loafers.
- 55°F to 65°F: a cream crewneck, a brown suede jacket, gray flannel trousers and suede chukka boots.
- 45°F to 55°F: a blue oxford shirt, a navy cable cardigan, an olive field jacket, brown corduroys and lace-up boots. Below that, it is time for a coat; our guide to the best men's winter coats starts there.
The overshirt: the fall layer that does a blazer's job
An overshirt is cut like a shirt and made like a jacket, from cloth heavy enough to hold its shape over a knit. That makes it the most useful single piece in a fall wardrobe: worn open over a T-shirt in September, buttoned over a crewneck in October, and under a topcoat once November arrives. It also covers the ground a blazer used to cover in offices that no longer expect one.
- Cloth: wool twill, flannel or herringbone for warmth; cashmere for softness against the neck; corduroy for a casual Saturday; suede for the most polish. Cotton canvas belongs to spring.
- Length: the hem should cover the seat of your trousers but end above the middle of the thigh. Any longer and it reads as a coat that shrank.
- Pockets: two chest pockets with flaps are the classic arrangement. Keep them empty, because a full pocket drags the front open.
- Collar: a point collar that lies flat when the top button is open; a stand collar looks sharper over a rollneck.
Three ways to wear it:
- Weekend: a charcoal wool overshirt open over a white T-shirt, dark jeans and brown suede chukkas.
- Office: a camel cashmere overshirt buttoned over a fine navy crewneck, gray flannel trousers and dark brown loafers.
- Dinner: a navy suede overshirt over a black rollneck, charcoal trousers and black Chelsea boots.
The Italian tailoring houses, Zegna, Loro Piana, Brunello Cucinelli and Brioni among them, are where we look first for overshirts, because they choose the cloth as carefully as they would for a jacket. See every men's overshirt and shirt jacket.

Suede jackets for dry fall days
Suede is the fall jacket leather. Its brushed nap looks warm, it softens with wear, and it takes the season's browns, olives and tobaccos better than smooth leather does. The trade-off is water. Treat a new suede jacket with a protector spray before the first wear, check the forecast, and let it dry naturally at room temperature if it gets caught in a shower, then brush the nap back up. On a wet day, wear a field jacket instead.
Fit matters more than cut. A suede jacket for fall should end at the belt or just below it, so it works with trousers of any rise, and it should close over a sweater without the zip or buttons straining. The blouson, with a ribbed or elasticated hem, is the most casual; the trucker, with chest pockets and a pointed collar, sits in the middle; a shirt-cut suede jacket is the dressiest and the easiest to wear with tailored trousers. Our spring jackets guide covers those cuts in lighter suedes.
- Brown and navy: a tan suede jacket over a navy crewneck, gray flannel trousers and dark brown loafers.
- Tonal olive: an olive suede jacket, a cream cable sweater and olive corduroys, with brown boots to break the green.
- Navy all the way: a navy suede blouson, a navy knit polo and dark jeans, the quietest outfit in this guide.
Among the houses, Saint Laurent leans toward fashion, Canali and Brioni toward tradition, and Tom Ford toward evening. Browse more men's leather and suede jackets.

Field jackets for wet and windy days
The field jacket is built for weather: four pockets, a collar you can turn up and a hip length that covers the small of the back. For fall, choose it by what the sky usually does where you live.
- Rain: a technical or waxed shell, such as a jacket in Loro Piana's Storm System, a treatment the house says makes its fabrics waterproof and wind resistant. A corduroy collar keeps the wet shell off your neck.
- Cold and dry: a wool field jacket, which is warmer than cotton, does not rustle and looks tailored enough to wear with flannel trousers.
- Mild and changeable: cotton gabardine or canvas, which layers over a cardigan and packs into a car.
Whatever the cloth, the fit test is the same: raise both arms with a sweater underneath, and if the hem climbs above your belt, go up a size. Leave the waist drawcord loose unless the wind is up, because cinched tight it makes the jacket look like outerwear for a hike.
Three ways to wear one:
- Commute: a navy wool field jacket with a leather-trimmed collar over a gray crewneck and a white shirt, charcoal trousers and suede Chelsea boots.
- Country weekend: an olive field jacket, a cream fisherman knit, brown corduroys and lace-up boots.
- City rain: a green technical field jacket over a navy cardigan, dark jeans and rubber-soled loafers.

Fall knitwear: cardigans, cables and zip knits
A cardigan is the most underrated of men's fall essentials, because it is two garments in one: a sweater when buttoned, a soft jacket when open. For the middle layer of a fall outfit, choose a chunkier knit than you would wear under tailoring. A cable or rib knit has the body to stand in for a jacket at a restaurant, and it looks right over an oxford shirt with the collar laid on top. Fine-gauge cashmere is a different job, the layer under a suit, and our guide to the best cashmere sweaters for men covers gauge, ply and care in full.
- Button it to the second button from the bottom and leave the last one open, so the fronts hang straight when you sit down.
- A shawl collar or a full zip gives a cardigan structure around the neck; both can replace a jacket at dinner.
- Match the knit to the trousers: chunky cables with corduroy, denim and flannel; a flatter rib with worsted trousers.
Three cardigan outfits:
- Saturday: a brown cable cardigan over a white oxford shirt, dark jeans and suede desert boots.
- Dinner: an olive zip cardigan over a cream rollneck, gray flannels and dark brown loafers.
- Game day: a gray cable cardigan, a navy T-shirt, olive corduroys and white leather sneakers.
Heavy cables from houses such as Valentino and Saint Laurent, softer ribs from Dries Van Noten and full-zip cardigans from Zegna cover the range. Browse every men's cardigan.

Flannel, tweed and corduroy: fall fabrics by weight
Cloth weight is the most useful number in fall tailoring, and a mill explains it best. Fox Brothers, which has woven cloth in Somerset since 1772, lists its collections by weight in grams per linear meter in its guide to cloth weight. We have added approximate ounces per linear yard, the traditional measure many tailors and shops still use, rounded to the nearest half ounce (one ounce per yard is about 31 grams per meter):
| Cloth (Fox Brothers collection) | Grams per meter | Ounces per yard (approx.) | What the mill says it is for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Worsted (Golden Fox) | 230–260 | 7.5–8.5 | Cool wool suits and trousers |
| Three-season (Fox City) | 290–320 | 9.5–10.5 | Three-season tailoring |
| Jacketing (Somerset Jacketing) | 340–370 | 11–12 | Autumn and winter jackets |
| Flannel (1772 Flannel) | 400–430 | 13–14 | Cold-weather tailoring |
| Tweed (Fox Tweed) | 480–510 | 15.5–16.5 | Tweed jackets for town and country |
| Heavy flannel (The Original Authentic Flannel) | 530–560 | 17–18 | Winter suits and trousers |
Read it as a calendar. September suits the worsteds and three-season cloths; October is jacketing and lighter flannel; November is heavy flannel and tweed. The mill adds one caution worth remembering in a fitting room: heavier cloth is not always warmer, because weave and finish count alongside weight.
Tweed is the cloth most tied to the season, and one tweed is protected by law. The Harris Tweed Authority explains that under the Harris Tweed Act of 1993, the cloth must be produced in the Outer Hebrides, from wool dyed and spun in an island mill and handwoven at the weaver's home, and it carries the Orb mark as proof. The Authority also describes it as dyed in the wool, with several colors blended in a single yarn. That blending is why a brown or green tweed jacket goes with so much else in a fall wardrobe: it usually already holds flecks of the colors you will wear with it.
Corduroy is the weekend alternative to flannel. The wider the wale, the ridge in the cloth, the more casual the trouser; a fine wale can go with a tweed jacket, and a wide wale belongs with a sweatshirt or a field jacket.
- Gray flannel with a navy cardigan and brown suede loafers is the classic fall trouser outfit.
- Brown corduroy with a cream cable crewneck and an olive field jacket is the weekend version.
- Olive corduroy with a navy overshirt and brown chukkas avoids the all-brown look without losing warmth.
For gray flannel, the tailoring houses, Zegna, Brioni, Canali and Brunello Cucinelli among them, are the specialists. For corduroy, choose a straight leg with a flat front, so the wale runs cleanly down to the shoe. See all men's trousers.

Brown, olive and navy: fall colors for men
A fall palette works when every piece can sit next to every other piece. Brown, olive and navy do that, with gray and cream as the neutrals that join them. Our AI stylist receives requests along the lines of "Show me some men's fall looks", and color is where most of those looks are won or lost. Five combinations cover almost everything:
- Brown with navy: one of the most reliable pairings in menswear. A navy knit under a brown suede jacket, or navy trousers with brown shoes.
- Olive with cream and brown: an olive field jacket, a cream sweater and brown corduroys. Cream keeps olive from looking military.
- Gray with anything: gray flannel trousers take a brown, olive or navy top without a second thought.
- Tonal brown: chocolate, tobacco and camel together, in three textures, such as a suede jacket, a cable knit and corduroy. Texture keeps a tonal outfit from looking flat.
- Navy on navy: a navy cardigan over a navy T-shirt with dark denim, finished with brown shoes and a brown belt.
Keep black for evening. Beside browns and olives in daylight it tends to look severe, while charcoal does the same job more gently.
Boots and loafers for fall
Fall shoes need to handle wet leaves and the first rain without looking like winter boots. Suede in dark browns and olives does this best, as long as you protect it before the first wear, and a rubber or crepe sole grips better than leather on wet pavement. Wear wool socks in a color close to your trousers, and have trousers hemmed with little or no break so they sit cleanly on the boot. For snow and slush, our men's winter boots guide picks up where this one ends.
Suede chukkas, desert boots and Chelsea boots
A chukka or desert boot, with two or three eyelets and an ankle-high shaft, is the most useful fall boot: casual enough for denim, neat enough for flannel. A suede Chelsea boot is the dressier choice, and it slides on and off in seconds. For a wet weekend, choose a chukka on a rubber lug sole; for dry days in town, an unlined suede desert boot is the lightest option.

Loafers
Loafers carry a fall outfit from the office to dinner. Choose suede or a brushed or aged leather for the season, and a thicker or lug sole if you walk a lot. A penny loafer with gray flannel and a cardigan is as close as menswear gets to a uniform for October. For fit, styles and care, see our guide to the best loafers for men.

| Cable or rib cardigan | Navy or brown | Oxford shirts and T-shirts |
| Fine crewneck | Cream | Suede, overshirts, tailoring |
| Oxford shirt | Pale blue | Cardigans, overshirts, flannel |
| Heavy T-shirt | White or navy | Overshirts and cardigans |
| Flannel trousers | Mid gray | Every top in the list |
| Corduroy trousers | Brown or olive | Knits and field jackets |

You may already own half of this. Ask our AI stylist to check the list against your digitized closet and suggest the three pieces that would add the most outfits.
How we chose
- Houses: top luxury menswear houses, from tailoring specialists such as Brioni, Zegna and Canali and bootmakers such as John Lobb to Saint Laurent, Prada and The Row, with no more than two pieces from one house in any edit.
- Season: fall weights only: wool, cashmere, suede, flannel and corduroy, plus field jackets in wool, gabardine and technical shells. Summer linens were left out.
- Color: browns, olives, navies and grays that work together, confirmed from each product photograph rather than the listed color name.
- Gray flannel first: we put mid-gray flannel at the head of the trouser edit and set it to refill with more of the same, because it is the trouser most outfits in this guide lean on.
- Refills: each edit refills from the same twenty menswear houses and the same category, so a sold-out suede jacket gives way to another suede jacket.
Frequently asked questions
What should men wear in fall?
Layers: a shirt or T-shirt, a middle layer such as an overshirt or cardigan, and a light jacket in suede or a field jacket. Wear flannel, corduroy or dark jeans with suede boots or loafers, and keep to brown, olive, navy and gray.
What are the essential fall pieces for men?
An overshirt, a suede or field jacket, a heavy cardigan, a cream crewneck, gray flannel trousers, corduroys, dark jeans, suede chukka boots and a pair of loafers. With those, almost any fall outfit is covered.
How should men layer for fall weather?
Thinnest layer closest to the skin, heaviest on the outside, and a middle layer that looks finished on its own. Size overshirts and jackets to close over a sweater, and plan to take one layer off by early afternoon.
What colors should men wear in fall?
Brown, olive and navy, with gray and cream as neutrals. Brown with navy is the safest pairing; olive works best with cream and brown. Save black for the evening.
Can you wear suede in the rain?
Not if you can avoid it. Treat suede with a protector spray before the first wear, and if it gets wet, let it dry at room temperature and brush the nap. On days with rain in the forecast, wear a field jacket with a waxed or technical shell instead.
What is the difference between an overshirt and a shirt jacket?
The names overlap, and many shops use them for the same thing. Both are cut like shirts from jacket-weight cloth; the pieces sold as shirt jackets or chore jackets tend to be a little longer and roomier, with patch pockets, so they sit more easily over a knit.
