Tailgate Outfits: What to Wear to a Football Game, From Pre-Parties to the Parking Lot

The best tailgate outfit for an early-fall game puts your team's color into one or two pieces, keeps to breathable cotton for a hot afternoon, adds a jacket for the drop in temperature after kickoff, and stands on boots that will not sink into a lawn. Choose a flat sole or a stacked western heel, never a stiletto. If you are going into the stadium, carry a bag that passes its clear-bag policy, and remember that where there is no re-entry (Ole Miss allowed none last season), what you wear through the gate stays with you until the final whistle.
Below: how a college tailgate differs from an NFL one, the Southern habit of dressing up for game day, what the weather does between September and November, boots for grass and gravel, school colors without a jersey, and the bag rules to check before you go, with pieces from Burberry, Gabriela Hearst, Isabel Marant, The Row, Fendi and other houses.
Tailgate outfit basics: a college game or an NFL game
The two kinds of tailgate ask for different clothes, mostly because of where you stand and for how long.
- A college tailgate usually happens on campus: lawns, quads and groves, under tents, for hours before kickoff. At Ole Miss, the tailgate in the Grove traditionally starts the evening before, with a Friday "land grab" in which fans who bring their own tents claim a spot; the university's athletics department set it for 6 p.m. in 2025. Expect grass under your feet, a long day in the sun and, at some Southern schools, an unwritten expectation that you dress up.
- An NFL tailgate usually happens in a parking lot: asphalt, grills and folding tables, a shorter window and a crowd in replica jerseys. Dress more casually, choose shoes you do not mind standing in for hours on hard ground, and keep fabrics that forgive smoke and the odd splash of sauce.
Both end at a stadium gate, and that is where outfit mistakes tend to surface: a bag that fails the size limit, an umbrella you cannot take in, or a thin dress with nothing over it for the fourth quarter.
What to wear to a college football game in the South
Some Southern schools treat game day as a dress-up occasion, Ole Miss among them. The University of Mississippi's student newspaper, The Daily Mississippian, calls dressing for Ole Miss games "almost as big a tradition as the Grove itself", and tells readers to check the designated color of the game. That is literal: for the 2026 season, Ole Miss published a fan color for every game, from red and navy to powder blue, and marked one home game "Stripe the Vaught" (the stadium is Vaught-Hemingway). If your school makes a color call, follow it before you choose anything else.
For an early-season game in the South, the dress has to cope with heat. Choose cotton poplin, silk, viscose or a light crepe over polyester, and a shirtdress or a fit-and-flare shape that moves air. Length matters more than it seems: you will climb bleacher stairs and sit on stadium benches, so a knee-length or midi hem is easier than a mini. Sleeves, even short ones, save your shoulders during a noon kickoff.
- Crimson and cream: a cream shirtdress with red stripes, cognac cowboy boots and small gold hoops.
- Navy for a night game: a navy cotton shirtdress belted at the waist, flat knee boots and a red silk scarf tied at the neck.
- Powder or sky blue: a bright blue shirtdress with white leather sneakers or tan western boots, and a quilted jacket for after dark.
- White-out: a white cotton shirtdress, a barn jacket over the shoulders and brown boots, for games when the call is white.

Game day outfits for fall weather
The season runs from late summer to early winter, and a game day outfit has to follow it. These are average daily highs and lows from NOAA's 1991–2020 climate normals for weather stations in three college towns, rounded:
| College town | September | October | November |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oxford, Mississippi (University station) | 86°F / 62°F | 76°F / 49°F | 64°F / 40°F |
| Ann Arbor, Michigan | 75°F / 52°F | 62°F / 41°F | 48°F / 31°F |
| State College, Pennsylvania | 72°F / 54°F | 61°F / 43°F | 49°F / 34°F |
Two things stand out. The gap between the day's high and its low is 15 to 27 degrees, so a noon tailgate and a night kickoff need different clothes. And by November, a Northern game day is cold enough for a coat, while a Southern one is only just asking for a jacket.
- Plan for the fourth quarter, not the tailgate. Dress for the heat of the afternoon, and carry the layer you will need when the sun goes down.
- Make the layer a jacket, not a sweater. A quilted barn jacket with a corduroy collar blocks wind, shrugs off a spilled drink better than a knit and looks right over a dress or jeans. It is also easier to carry than a coat once the sun is out again.
- Bring rain cover you can wear. Ole Miss's A to Z guide to its stadium listed umbrellas among prohibited items last season, and The Daily Mississippian's advice is a poncho. A jacket with a hood or a water-resistant shell is the smarter version.
Look for a quilted barn jacket with a corduroy collar from houses such as Burberry, Loewe and The Row, and size up if a thick knit will go underneath. Browse every quilted jacket, or see our guide to fall wardrobe essentials.

Shoes for grass, gravel and bleachers
A tailgate is a long day on uneven ground: soft lawns, gravel lots, curbs and then stadium stairs, often after dark. The rule is weight distribution. A stiletto concentrates your weight on a point that sinks into grass and catches between stones; a flat sole, a wide stacked heel or a wedge spreads it out. Break boots in before game day, because you may be on your feet for six hours or more, and wear socks that reach above the top of the boot shaft.
Western boots
Cowboy boots make sense for a Southern game day: the stacked heel is wide enough to stay on top of a lawn, and the shaft protects your legs from damp grass and gravel. Choose a heel of about two inches or less for a full day (listings usually give it in millimeters, and 40 to 50 is plenty), and a mid-calf shaft if you are wearing a dress, so the hem and the boot do not fight. A rubber outsole grips damp grass better than a leather one.

Flat riding boots
For a late-season game, or anywhere north of the Mason-Dixon line, a flat knee-high riding boot is the most practical choice: warm, easy to walk in, and tall enough to wear with a dress or tucked-in jeans. Leather sheds rain better than suede; if you choose suede, spray it with a protector the week before. The edit below mixes both, so choose by your forecast. How to wear school colors without a jersey
A jersey is the easy answer, and at NFL games you will see plenty of them. At a college tailgate, especially a dressy one, the more polished approach is to translate the school's colors into clothes you would wear anyway. Our Super Bowl outfits guide covers the one-strong-piece approach for the pros; for college colors, which often come in pairs, think in color families:
| If your colors are | Wear them as | Pair with |
|---|---|---|
| Crimson, cardinal or garnet | A burgundy or deep red dress, knit or bag | Cream, navy and denim |
| Orange or burnt orange | A silk scarf, a knit or a rust suede jacket | White, navy or brown |
| Purple and gold | A purple knit or scarf with gold jewelry | Black and cream |
| Navy and red | A navy dress with a red scarf or bag | White and tan |
| Royal or powder blue | A blue shirtdress or knit | White, tan and denim |
| Green | A forest green knit or jacket | Cream and camel |
| Black and gold | A black dress with gold jewelry | Camel and cognac |
The smallest dose of color is a silk scarf. Knot it at the neck, tie it in your hair or around a ponytail, or wrap it twice around the wrist; a square printed in both of your school's colors solves the two-color problem in a single piece. At some schools, game day buttons are part of the outfit: a student quoted in The Daily Mississippian recommends finishing one with a couple of them. Pin them to a jacket rather than a silk dress, which the pin will mark. For more ways to wear one, see our guide to the best designer scarves, or browse all scarves and wraps.

Clear bags and what to carry to the stadium
If the tailgate ends at the gate, plan the bag first. When the Southeastern Conference announced its clear-bag policy for every stadium where its schools host games, starting with the 2017 season, it allowed a clear plastic, vinyl or PVC bag no larger than 12 x 6 x 12 inches or a one-gallon clear freezer bag, plus a small clutch no larger than 4.5 x 6.5 inches, with or without a strap, which it described as approximately the size of a hand. Fans could carry a blanket over an arm, medically necessary items were allowed after inspection, and the conference encouraged fans not to bring bags at all. Last season, Ole Miss's A to Z guide still allowed only clear bags up to 12 x 12 x 6 inches, and added its own list: no umbrellas, no folding chairs, one sealed water bottle of 20 ounces or less, no re-entry once your ticket is scanned, and gates that open two hours before kickoff.
Treat those as the rules to check, not the rules that apply. Policies change, and every conference, school and stadium publishes its own, so read the page for your game in the week before you go. You will not find a clear bag in our edits: the designer versions in our catalog add chains, crystals or a printed lining, and a plain clear bag is the safer choice at the gate. For NFL stadiums, see our Super Bowl guide, which covers the league's clear-bag rules and the small bags that fit them.
- Carry little: phone, card, ID, lip balm and a small battery pack fit in a hand-sized clutch.
- Keep the clear bag plain: the 2017 announcement allowed one approved logo, on one side only and no larger than 4.5 by 3.4 inches, so a bag covered in print or trim is asking for a second look.
- Leave the tote at the tent: sunscreen, a hat and a spare layer can stay at the tailgate for the walk back.
NFL tailgate outfits
An NFL tailgate is a parking lot party, and the outfit should suit asphalt and a grill. Dark jeans or straight trousers, a knit in the team's color, a leather or suede jacket and leather sneakers or flat boots cover most of the season; a replica jersey over a long-sleeved T-shirt is fine if that is your crowd. From Thanksgiving on, many Northern games are cold, so dress as you would for a long walk in winter: a down coat, a hat and gloves, and boots with a rubber sole for icy lots. Stand upwind of the grill if you are wearing suede or cashmere, because smoke clings.

How we chose
- Ground and hours: every boot here has a flat sole or a block or stacked heel, none has a stiletto, and where a listing states the heel height it is 50 millimeters (about two inches) or less.
- Weather: cotton, viscose and crepe dresses for September heat, quilted jackets for night games, and leather boots for rain.
- Color: dresses and scarves chosen for the colors schools actually use, checked against each product photograph rather than the listed color name.
- Houses: top luxury houses only, with no more than three pieces from one house in any edit, and no team logos: Vêtir is not affiliated with any school, conference or league.
- Refills: the western edit refills only with cowboy boots and the riding edit only with knee-high boots, so a sold-out pair is replaced by another cowboy or riding boot rather than a dress boot.
Frequently asked questions
What should I wear to a tailgate?
For a college tailgate in early fall, a cotton dress or dark jeans with a knit in your team's color, a jacket for after sunset and boots with a flat sole or a low stacked heel. For an NFL tailgate, go more casual: jeans, a team-color knit or jersey, a leather jacket and sneakers or flat boots.
What do you wear to a college football game in the South?
Some Southern schools, Ole Miss among them, treat game day as a dress-up occasion. A shirtdress or light dress in the school's color, cowboy boots or flat sandals, and a jacket for the evening are the standard. Check whether your school announces a color for the game.
What shoes should I wear to a tailgate on grass?
Flat boots, cowboy boots with a stacked heel of about two inches or less, clean leather sneakers or a wedge. Avoid stilettos, which sink into lawns, and break any new boots in before game day.
What bags are allowed at SEC football games?
As the SEC announced its clear-bag policy in 2017: a clear plastic, vinyl or PVC bag no larger than 12 x 6 x 12 inches, or a one-gallon clear freezer bag, plus a small clutch no larger than 4.5 x 6.5 inches, with medically necessary items allowed after inspection. Stadiums publish their own versions and update them, so check the current rules for your game before you go.
Can you bring an umbrella to a college football game?
Often not. Ole Miss, for one, listed umbrellas among prohibited items at its stadium last season. Wear a jacket with a hood or a water-resistant shell instead, and check your own stadium's list.
How do you wear team colors without a jersey?
Put the main color into one piece, such as a dress, a knit or a jacket, and add the second color in a scarf, a bag or jewelry. Keep the rest neutral: cream, navy, denim, camel or black.
