Christmas Outfit Ideas: What to Wear From Christmas Eve to Christmas Day

The best Christmas outfit ideas pair one rich texture (velvet, cashmere or satin) with one seasonal color, worn with restraint. For Christmas Eve dinner, that means a velvet or crepe dress in bottle green, burgundy or clear red with black shoes and gold jewelry. For Christmas Day, it means a festive cashmere knit with tailored trousers, or a knit dress that survives a long lunch, with velvet slippers or flats. Red, green and tartan work best one piece at a time.
This year Christmas Eve falls on a Thursday and Christmas Day on a Friday, so the holiday runs straight into a weekend and most families will need three or four outfits rather than one. Below: outfits for Christmas Eve, Christmas morning, the family lunch, church and the walk afterward, how to wear the holiday colors without looking like a costume, a short guide to Christmas party outfits, the shoes that finish every look, and a carry-on plan if you're traveling.
Christmas Eve outfit ideas
In many families, Christmas Eve is the dressier of the two days: a long dinner, sometimes a late church service, and usually the photographs. Outfits for Christmas Eve were among the holiday requests our AI stylist received last December, and our editors' answer is nearly always the same: dress for the dinner and plan for the service. A midi dress in velvet or crepe covers both, formal enough for a candlelit table and covered enough for a pew. If you'll go to a late service, choose sleeves or bring a wrap, and a heel you can stand in for an hour.
Velvet is the Christmas Eve fabric, and if you buy one Christmas dress this year, make it velvet. It looks richest by candlelight and firelight, it feels festive without a single sequin, and in a dark color it hides the evidence of a long dinner. Our guide to velvet dresses explains the difference between silk and cotton velvet if you're choosing one to keep.
- Bottle-green velvet. Alaïa's fitted, square-necked velvet midi in bottle green, with black satin pumps and gold earrings: the Christmas color in its most grown-up form. It is sleeveless, so bring a wrap for the service.
- Chili-red crepe. Carolina Herrera's crepe midi with bows at the shoulders, black velvet slingbacks and a black clutch. Keep the jewelry gold and small.
- Emerald satin for a formal dinner. Tom Ford's crystal-strapped satin slip dress, cut to the floor, with a black cashmere cardigan over the shoulders.
- Tartan, done once. A red-and-green checked shirtdress, like Emilia Wickstead's, with black tights, a black cardigan and black velvet flats. The check is the whole story, so nothing else is patterned.
- Printed velvet or soft jersey for a long night. A red-and-black printed velvet maxi, or a forest-green ruched jersey maxi, when comfort at the table matters as much as the photographs.
Dressing for the photographs. Solid jewel tones and black read clearly against a tree and candlelight; very fine stripes and small checks can shimmer on phone cameras. If the family wants a coordinated picture, agree on a palette (navy, cream and one red, for example) rather than matching outfits, so everyone still looks like themselves.

What to wear on Christmas Day
Christmas Day is several occasions in one: presents in the morning, a long lunch or dinner, perhaps a service, a walk. The goal is polished comfort, in clothes you're happy to be photographed in from 8 am to 10 pm.
Christmas morning
Pajamas are fine for the first hour. After that, a festive cashmere sweater with soft tailored trousers and velvet slippers looks dressed without trying. Loro Piana's Noel Fair Isle turtleneck, striped in red, green, gray and cream, gives you the pattern of a Christmas sweater without a single reindeer. Pair it with black wide-leg wool-cashmere trousers such as The Row's.
Christmas brunch, lunch or dinner
Brunch is the least formal meal of the holiday: a sweater with a satin or pleated skirt, or a knit dress with loafers, is enough. For a long lunch or dinner, waistbands matter more today than any other day of the year. Choose pull-on or high-rise tailored trousers, a knit dress or a sweater dress rather than a fitted satin sheath. Knits, jersey and crepe travel well and don't crease in the car. Keep ivory and pale cashmere for someone else's table: red wine and gravy are part of the menu.
If you're hosting
You will cook, carry and clear for most of the day, so dress for movement and heat. Choose sleeves that push up or stop at the forearm, and avoid anything trailing near candles and burners. A fine-knit dress or a sweater with pull-on trousers works, with flat velvet slippers or loafers rather than heels. Change into your good earrings and a lipstick just before guests arrive; that small switch does more than a full outfit change.
Church on Christmas Day
Norms vary by denomination and by congregation, but covered shoulders and a hem at or below the knee are the safe default for a service you don't know. A knit dress or a sweater with a midi skirt, a coat and closed-toe shoes covers it; sequins can wait for the evening. Our guide to church-appropriate clothes goes into more detail.
The afternoon walk
A long wool coat, a cashmere or tartan scarf, leather gloves and lug-sole boots. This is the easiest moment of the whole holiday to wear tartan: on a scarf, it frames the face and never looks like a costume.
Four Christmas Day formulas
- Fair Isle and black. A Fair Isle cashmere sweater, black wide-leg trousers and velvet slippers.
- Red cashmere, gray flannel. A red cashmere V-neck over a fine black turtleneck, with gray flannel trousers and velvet loafers.
- Burgundy turtleneck. A slim cashmere turtleneck tucked into a camel or chocolate skirt, with knee boots.
- Sweater dress. Max Mara's espresso turtleneck sweater dress with knee boots and a long camel coat for church and the walk.

Red, green, tartan and velvet without the costume
The difference between festive and fancy dress is proportion. The holiday colors are having a strong season: Tagwalk, which tracks runway collections, lists both red and velvet among its fall/winter 2026 womenswear trends, and Trendalytics reports tartan up 40 percent and burgundy up 46 percent year over year. That makes it easier to find good versions, and more important to wear them well. Six rules:
- One holiday color per outfit. Set it against a neutral: red with black, navy or chocolate; green with black, camel or gray. Red and green together only when one of them is small, like an emerald clutch with a red dress.
- Choose the deep shade for evening. Bottle green, emerald, burgundy and oxblood look rich by candlelight. A clear red works best in a simple shape, worn head to toe in one fabric.
- Tartan, one piece at a time. Muted checks (charcoal, black and cream, green and brown) are the easiest, paired with solids that repeat one color from the check. A classic red-and-green tartan works as a single piece, such as a dress with black tights and black shoes, with nothing else patterned. A scarf, a bag or a cardigan is easier still than a full tartan suit.
- Velvet with matte, not more shine. Pair velvet with cashmere, wool or crepe. Emerald velvet trousers look modern with a fine black knit and plain pumps; add a satin blouse and crystal shoes and they start to look like a costume. Our guide to the cropped velvet jacket has more ways to wear a single velvet piece.
- Skip the motifs. Reindeer, snowflakes and Santas belong to the office sweater contest. A Fair Isle or jacquard pattern gives you tradition without the joke.
- Metal as the accent. Gold jewelry, a crystal buckle or a brass clasp add sparkle without adding another color.
Four ways to put the rules to work:
- The green velvet jacket. A belted velvet jacket worn like a smoking jacket, such as Loro Piana's, over a fine black turtleneck with black trousers and velvet slippers.
- Burgundy velvet trousers. Straight velvet trousers in burgundy with a black cashmere sweater and gold hoops.
- The green coat. A double-breasted green velvet coat over all black: the whole holiday in one piece.
- Tartan as the accent. Saint Laurent's llama-and-wool tartan scarf with a camel coat, or Loewe's Amazona bag in tartan suede with a gray knit and black trousers.

Christmas party outfit ideas
A Christmas party with friends or neighbors is a cocktail party with the holiday turned up, so everything in our holiday party outfits guide applies, from reading the invitation to choosing the dress. The Christmas-specific version is simply more velvet and more red and green, used with the rules above.
- Red, all at once. A red crepe or satin dress with black pumps and a black bag. Nothing else red.
- Emerald velvet, black sequins. Emerald velvet trousers with a black sequined top and plain black pumps.
- Burgundy and gold. Burgundy velvet trousers with a gold metallic knit and a fine gold chain.
- The festive-sweater party. If the invitation calls for Christmas sweaters, a Fair Isle knit is the grown-up answer, and a sequined one works after dark.
An office Christmas party follows office rules: your best tailoring plus one festive piece, with the red or green in a blazer, a skirt or a shoe rather than a whole outfit. Leave the Santa hat to the person who organized the party.
If Christmas week runs straight into New Year's Eve, our New Year's Eve outfits guide covers the sequins. For a full look built from what you already own, ask our AI stylist with the occasion and the dress you have in mind.
Christmas shoes, bags and finishing touches
Velvet is the Christmas shoe fabric too. At home, velvet slippers or tasseled velvet loafers look finished with a sweater and trousers and are comfortable through a long day. Out, velvet ballet flats with a jeweled buckle, such as Manolo Blahnik's Hangisi flats, suit church, lunch and a long evening of standing; save the velvet pump for dinner, and keep it around 70mm. For bags, a deep-red velvet clutch with a crystal buckle, like the one in the edit above, or a small emerald bag adds the holiday color while the clothes stay neutral. Keep the jewelry gold or pearl, with at most one red or green stone.

Christmas away from home: a three-day packing plan
If you're spending Christmas with family or friends, one carry-on can cover Christmas Eve through the weekend when every piece works with at least two others. Build it around one dress and one festive knit:
- For Christmas Eve: a velvet or crepe midi dress, sheer black tights, velvet flats or low pumps, and a wrap for the service.
- For Christmas morning: the festive cashmere sweater with wide-leg trousers and velvet slippers.
- For the lunch or dinner: the same trousers or a midi skirt with a second, plainer knit, plus your best earrings.
- For the walk and the travel days: a long coat, a scarf, leather gloves and boots, worn on the plane or in the car to save space.
That is two knits, one pair of trousers, one skirt, one dress, two pairs of flat shoes and boots. Everything in dark or neutral colors except one holiday piece, so the combinations never clash.
Christmas somewhere warm changes the fabrics, not the idea. In Palm Beach, Southern California or on a Caribbean island, swap velvet for silk satin and crepe, cashmere for fine cotton or silk knits, and slippers for flat sandals. Keep one holiday color, and the look still reads as Christmas in shirtsleeve weather.
How we chose
For Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and the parties in between, we chose only top luxury houses sold on Vêtir, and each garment and pair of shoes had three or more sizes in stock when we checked in late September. We looked at each product's photographs rather than relying on color names, which matters most for red and green: retailer color labels are not always accurate. We favored velvet, cashmere, crepe and satin, darker holiday shades over bright ones, and pieces that work beyond December: velvet trousers for January dinners, a Fair Isle sweater for every winter weekend. We left out novelty motifs entirely.
Frequently asked questions
What should I wear on Christmas Day?
Polished comfort: a cashmere sweater with tailored or pull-on trousers, a knit dress, or a sweater with a midi skirt, plus velvet slippers at home and flats or low heels out. Choose fabrics that don't crease and a waistband that forgives a long lunch.
What colors should you wear for Christmas?
Red, green, burgundy, gold and cream are traditional, and deep versions (bottle green, oxblood, burgundy) look the most sophisticated. Wear one holiday color at a time against black, navy, camel, gray or chocolate.
Can you wear black on Christmas?
Yes. Black velvet or black cashmere looks festive on its own, especially with one holiday accent, such as red shoes, an emerald bag or gold jewelry. Black is also the easiest base for a red or green piece you already own, and the safest choice if you are not sure how dressed-up the evening will be.
What should I wear to a Christmas Eve church service?
Something with covered shoulders and a hem at or below the knee, unless you know the congregation is more relaxed: a velvet or knit midi dress, or a sweater and skirt, with a coat and closed-toe shoes. Bring a wrap if your dress is sleeveless.
How do you wear tartan without looking like a costume?
Wear one tartan piece, and keep everything else solid in a color taken from the check. Scarves, bags and cardigans are the easiest ways in; a tartan skirt or dress works with a plain knit, black tights and plain shoes, never with a second pattern.
Is velvet appropriate during the day?
At Christmas, yes. Velvet trousers, a velvet jacket or velvet flats work at lunch, especially paired with matte knits. Save velvet gowns and embellished velvet for the evening.
