Men's Overshirts: The Eight Fabrics to Search for, Fit Rules, and 12 Ways to Wear a Shirt Jacket this Winter.

Men's overshirts do the job a sport coat used to do on most days: a shirt-cut layer in jacket-weight cloth that goes over a T-shirt or a fine knit in October and under a topcoat in January. If you buy only one, make it a solid wool or flannel overshirt in charcoal, navy, olive or burgundy, with a point collar, two flap chest pockets and a body that closes over a crewneck without the buttons pulling. After that, the fabric decides the job: cashmere for dressier rooms, corduroy for weekends, suede for dinner, a padded one for the coldest commutes, and denim or cotton gabardine for the weeks at either end of the season.

Below: how to read a listing's fit line before you size up, eight edits with more than 60 pieces from houses including Brunello Cucinelli, Zegna, Kiton and Givenchy, twelve outfits, care, and what to buy once.

Overshirt, shirt jacket or shacket: what the listing tells you

Shops use the three names for one garment, and so do the houses: Moncler's listing for its Meridelle down shirt jacket calls it a shacket a sentence later. Five details further down the page tell you more than the name:

  • The cloth. Flannel, double-face wool, cashmere, corduroy, suede or a padded shell. If the listing's main selling point is that the fabric is lightweight and breathable, it is a shirt.
  • Lining or padding. Burberry's Thorn overshirt has a Signature Check lining and Prada's corduroy shirt is lined and padded, according to their listings. Kiton's windowpane overshirt is unlined, which keeps it closer to a shirt in weight.
  • Hand pockets. Side or welt pockets at hip height are a jacket detail. A shirt has only chest pockets.
  • The hem. A deep shirttail is cut to be tucked. On denim and light wool it is fine; on a heavier overshirt, our stylists prefer a straight or shallow curved hem, which lies flatter under a coat.
  • The cuff. It should open wide enough to pass over the cuff of a sweater.

How an overshirt should fit, and when to size up

Read the fit line in the listing before the size chart, because one house can sell both cuts. Burberry describes its Thorn overshirt as a classic fit with set-in sleeves for a more structured shoulder, and its Cadoc corduroy as oversized, which it calls Burberry's loosest cut. Balmain's listing for its monogram tweed overshirt tells buyers to select one to two sizes smaller than usual. Gabriela Hearst's Lucas is a relaxed fit that, per its listing, fits true to size.

Our stylists' rule of thumb: size up only when a listing calls the cut classic, regular or slim and you plan to wear a sweater under it. For a relaxed or oversized cut, stay with your usual size, or the smaller one if you fall between two. Then run four checks:

  1. The buttoned reach. Button the overshirt over the knit you will actually wear and reach both arms forward. The back should not pull tight across the shoulder blades, and the placket should not gape between buttons or snaps.
  2. Chest ease. In our experience, an overshirt worn over a knit needs a garment chest five to seven inches bigger than your body chest, and four to five over a T-shirt. Burberry's Cadoc flannel listing gives a 45-inch chest on a large.
  3. Length against your coat. Measure your topcoat from the base of its collar; our stylists' margin is an overshirt at least four inches shorter, so its hem never shows below the coat. Valentino's listing gives a back length of 30.5 inches on an Italian 46 and Gucci's 31.5 inches on a 48, easy under a knee-length overcoat; check a peacoat with a tape measure.
  4. The coat test. Under a coat, the overshirt's sleeves and armholes matter more than its chest. Put the two on together and cross your arms: if the coat pulls across the back or its sleeves ride up past your shirt cuff, that overshirt is too thick for that coat.

Underneath, a fine merino or cashmere crewneck suits any cut; a chunky cable needs a relaxed one. Our men's cardigans guide covers the knits.

Buttons, snaps or a zip

The fastening sets how dressed-up the overshirt looks. To our eye, horn buttons are the dressiest; Burberry's Cadoc corduroy, for one, has buffalo-horn buttons, according to its listing. A concealed fastening is quieter still: Tom Ford's suede Western jacket has a concealed snap front, per its listing, and its photographs show the snaps capped in suede, so it sits easily beside tailored trousers.

Snaps open with one hand and read as Western or workwear. Brunello Cucinelli's flannel and wool overshirts and Kiton's windowpane all close with them, per their listings. Two cautions: a tailor can move a button far more easily than a snap, so buy a snap front that already closes without strain; and a snap yanked open at an angle stresses the cloth around it, so pull straight.

A zip turns the shape into a blouson. It is the neatest choice under a coat, with no buttons to press through, but it is the most casual, and it never falls open at the collar the way a buttoned shirt does.

The wool overshirt: twill, flannel and double-face

The wool overshirt is the one to buy first, and the cloth sets its character. Wool twill, as in Balmain's straight-cut black overshirt, is smooth and crisp and wears best with tailored trousers. Flannel is brushed after weaving, so it looks soft and slightly hazy; it is the friendlier partner for denim and corduroy. Double-face wool, as in Burberry's dove-gray Thorn, has the body to stand away from the chest, which makes it the closest of the three to a jacket.

Start with a color you can wear with the trousers you already own. Charcoal works with every trouser color; our stylists wear navy with gray, cream, white and black, and use olive and burgundy to add warmth without looking like a statement. Brunello Cucinelli makes its virgin wool flannel overshirt in several colors, including a deep burgundy it calls Lava and a forest green, with flap chest pockets and snaps. For a softer shape, Givenchy's gray flannel is a relaxed fit with couture seams that round the proportion, per its listing.

Listings rarely give a cloth weight, so judge it from the photographs: a real overshirt holds its pocket flaps flat and its collar up. Browse every men's shirt jacket and utility jacket.

Plaid flannel, check and tweed overshirts

A pattern makes an overshirt casual, and its scale decides how long you will wear it. A quiet check or windowpane, like Kiton's gray windowpane in a wool, silk and cotton blend, with a tan overcheck, or Burberry's dove-gray Cadoc in wool flannel, sits beside tailoring and lasts for years. A buffalo check is a statement: Givenchy's cream-and-black double-face wool, with a lambskin collar, is a one- or two-season pleasure, and a good one.

To wear a pattern, take one of its colors for the trousers or the knit, and keep everything else plain. Fendi's check wool shirt jacket has a black wool felt panel on the back and leather on the yoke and elbows, according to its listing. Moncler's zip shirt jacket pairs herringbone with a striped wool blend. Balmain's monogram tweed is a mixed-fiber cloth of cotton, polyamide, polyester and viscose, per its listing, so treat it as a tweed look, not a wool tweed.

Read percentages before names. US labeling rules, as the FTC's guidance on the Textile and Wool Acts explains, require fiber content by percentage of weight, and wool must be named with its share even below 5%. That is how we left out a check shirt jacket whose listing says it echoes the feel of traditional felt, then gives the fabric as 82% polyester and 13% wool.

Cashmere overshirts

A cashmere overshirt is the one that can replace a blazer. It is light for its warmth, it drapes rather than stands, and over a fine-gauge knit it looks deliberate enough for an office that has dropped the jacket. The label tells you what you are paying for. Kiton's listings name cashmere as the only fiber in its plaid and houndstooth overshirts, and Brunello Cucinelli's half-lined cashmere flannel jacket is 100% cashmere. Zegna's light-beige overshirt is 59% cashmere and 41% mulberry silk, and to our eye the silk gives it a faint sheen. Gabriela Hearst's Lucas is 70% wool and 30% cashmere, and Loewe's black overshirt, a wool-and-cashmere blend made in Italy, has an Anagram-embossed leather chest pocket, per its listing.

In our experience, a wool-cashmere blend stands up to elbows on a desk and the friction of a coat lining better than pure cashmere, which pills and shines sooner at the cuffs. Buy a neutral first: light beige, gray or navy. Zegna's yellow multimélange and Kiton's royal-blue houndstooth are pleasures for a season or two, best worn with gray, cream or navy around them. More on fiber and gauge in our guide to the best cashmere sweaters for men.

Corduroy overshirts

Corduroy is a pile cloth, usually cotton, woven with raised ridges called wales. The narrower the wale, the more a cord behaves like a shirt: Canali describes its shirt as a fine micro-corduroy, and Tom Ford's snap-front Western cord shirt, in a pale ivory the house calls Sugar, is one to wear open over a T-shirt. A wider wale, or a lined and padded cord like Prada's oversized corduroy shirt in cotton and cashmere, does a jacket's work.

Cord is the weekend overshirt and the right weight for the Thanksgiving table this year, which the federal holiday calendar puts on Thursday, November 26. Brown and olive are the colors to keep. Etro's paisley-printed cord and Versace's red cord with a leather collar are for a season or two. Cord flattens where it rubs, so brush it in the direction of the pile after wearing, and steam rather than iron it, which in our experience keeps the wale from going shiny.

For the full holiday look, our men's Thanksgiving outfits guide builds it from the trousers up. Browse more men's casual shirts.

Suede and leather overshirts

A suede overshirt is the most polished of the group and the least practical. It blocks wind like a jacket and usually is one: few suede overshirts fit comfortably under a coat, so treat it as the outer layer and wear a T-shirt or thin knit beneath. Our men's leather jackets guide covers judging the hide; for an overshirt, three things matter more.

  • Adjusters. Tom Ford's sand suede Western jacket has hem adjusters and Givenchy's black suede jacket has buttons at the sides to adjust the fit, according to their listings. On a jacket with no belt, that is how you take in the body.
  • Color by trousers. Our stylists wear sand and stone suede with navy, gray, black or cream. Brown and camel suede they keep for gray, cream, olive and burgundy.
  • Cleaning. Brunello Cucinelli's listing for its four-pocket suede jacket says to take it to specialist facilities and not to dry clean it. Ask a leather specialist before any other cleaner touches a suede overshirt.

For smooth leather rather than suede, Kiton's chore shirt jacket is burnished, shaded darker at the seams and pockets in its photographs.

Quilted, padded and down overshirts

A padded overshirt is a shirt on top and a jacket inside, and the fill decides how it behaves. Moncler's down shirt jackets carry 90% down and 10% feather, per their listings, and Prada's technical-cotton jacket is padded with goose down. Brunello Cucinelli's pale padded wool jacket uses Thermore, which describes itself as a family-run insulation maker, founded in Milan in 1972, whose solutions turn recycled PET bottles into warmth. Balenciaga's checked padded overshirt is filled with 60% silk and 40% polylactide, according to its listing.

In our experience, down gives the most warmth for its bulk and springs back after a day under a coat; a thin synthetic padding stays flatter and copes better with a damp commute. Under a coat, slimness wins: Moncler's Norfol hides its down inside a check wool blend, with a teddy lining at the closure, and from a few feet away looks like an unpadded wool overshirt. A puffier quilt is better worn alone on a cold, dry weekend. Gucci's GG canvas overshirt is lightly padded and zips up; Moncler's Tiriol puts down inside soft denim. Browse more men's quilted jackets.

Denim overshirts

A denim overshirt is not a trucker jacket: it has a shirt collar, a longer body and no waistband, so it hangs instead of stopping at the belt. Our stylists keep it away from jeans of the same wash and wear an indigo one with gray, ecru or black trousers. A cream denim overshirt, like Versace's, is the most useful in fall colors, since it takes olive, brown and burgundy as easily as gray.

Logo denim, such as Dior's Oblique jacquard, is a season's pleasure. Saint Laurent's denim overshirt, in olive, woven of cotton and linen and with a Cassandre on the chest pocket, is the quietest way to bring denim into a wardrobe of fall browns. Browse every men's denim jacket.

Cotton gabardine and twill overshirts

The cotton overshirt covers the weeks when wool is too warm: early September, the first days of spring, a heated office. Gabardine is a tightly woven twill with a smooth face; in our experience it rides out a brief drizzle better than looser cottons, though it is no raincoat. Garment dyeing, as on Dries Van Noten's Braxton, leaves the cloth softer in our experience and can show a faint fade along the seams. The Row's Kian is fully lined in cotton and silk, according to its listing, which makes it the dressiest cotton here; Zegna's cotton-twill overshirt is reinforced along the sleeves.

Khaki and olive are the buys; camel, as in Valentino's gabardine shirt jacket, wears beautifully with cream, white and olive.

How to wear an overshirt: 12 outfits our stylists use

Two habits apply to all of them: wear the overshirt untucked, and leave the top button open unless a rollneck sits under it.

Over a T-shirt

  • A forest-green wool flannel overshirt, open, over a white T-shirt, with ecru jeans and tobacco suede loafers.
  • A light-wash denim overshirt over a gray T-shirt, with charcoal flannel trousers and white leather sneakers.
  • A khaki gabardine overshirt over a navy T-shirt, with stone chinos and white canvas sneakers.

Over a knit

  • A burgundy flannel overshirt buttoned over a gray merino crewneck, with charcoal trousers and black loafers.
  • A mustard cashmere overshirt over a cream rollneck, with olive corduroys and dark brown suede boots.
  • A cream-and-black check overshirt over a black rollneck, with black jeans and black Chelsea boots.

Under a coat

  • A navy wool snap-front overshirt over a white oxford shirt, under a charcoal overcoat, with gray flannels and black derbies.
  • A charcoal down shirt jacket over a gray rollneck, under a navy topcoat, with gray flannels and black boots. Our men's winter coats guide covers the coat.

In place of a blazer

  • A light-beige cashmere-and-silk overshirt over a pale-blue shirt, with navy trousers and burgundy loafers.
  • A gray windowpane overshirt with a tan overcheck, over a white shirt, with charcoal trousers and dark brown suede loafers.

For dinner and the holidays

  • A sand suede Western jacket over an ecru rollneck, with chocolate corduroys and dark brown suede boots.
  • A brown corduroy overshirt over a cream cable crewneck, with gray flannel trousers and brown suede loafers, for Thanksgiving.

To build any of these around an overshirt you already own, ask our AI stylist to pull the rest from your digitized closet. For the jackets that go over an overshirt, see men's fall jackets.

Caring for an overshirt

  • Wool, cashmere and cord: brush after wearing, then hang on a broad, shaped hanger so the shoulders keep their line. The Woolmark Company's storage advice recommends cedar hangers for suits because they help absorb moisture from daily wear.
  • Padded and down: hang it, never vacuum-pack it, and follow the care label, since fill and shell often need different treatment.
  • Suede: a leather specialist only, and a dry day to wear it.
  • Denim and cotton: wash inside out on a cool cycle when the label allows. Versace's Medusa denim overshirt is marked for a 30°C (86°F) machine wash in its listing; Loewe's and Tom Ford's are marked for dry cleaning.

Buy once, enjoy for a season, and the mistakes we see

Buy once:

  • A dark solid wool or flannel overshirt.
  • A cashmere or cashmere-blend one in beige, gray or navy.
  • A corduroy in brown or olive.
  • If the budget allows, a plain suede in sand or brown.

Enjoy for a season or two: buffalo checks, logo cloths like Dior Oblique and Gucci GG canvas, patchwork, bright houndstooth and printed cord.

The mistakes we see most:

  • Buying an overshirt in your shirt size, then finding it will not close over a sweater.
  • Wearing an oversized overshirt under a tailored coat, so the sleeves bunch at the elbow.
  • Pairing a heavy flannel with summer-weight chinos. Match the trouser's weight to the overshirt's.
  • Matching the overshirt to the trousers in the same cloth and color, gray flannel on gray flannel, which reads as a suit missing its jacket.

How we chose

  • Weight first: we kept pieces whose listings name flannel, double-face wool, cashmere, corduroy, suede, padding or a lining, and dropped shirt-weight cottons sold under the name.
  • Honest fibers: blends are named as blends, and a felt-look check that turned out to be mostly polyester was left out.
  • Fit we could state: where a house publishes its cut or a measurement, we used it in the advice above.
  • Colors from the photographs, not the listed color names, and pieces offered in at least three sizes when we chose them.
  • Houses: 25 of them, no more than three to an edit.

Frequently asked questions

What is an overshirt?

A shirt-cut layer in jacket-weight cloth, such as flannel, cashmere, corduroy, suede or a padded shell, worn untucked over a T-shirt or knit, or under a coat. It keeps a shirt's collar and cuffs and often adds hand pockets.

Should you size up in an overshirt?

Only when the listing calls the cut classic, regular or slim and a sweater will go under it. For relaxed or oversized cuts, order your usual size; Balmain advises going smaller on its tweed overshirt.

What do you wear under an overshirt?

A plain T-shirt, an oxford shirt, a fine merino or cashmere crewneck, or a rollneck. Keep the layer underneath thinner than the overshirt, and save chunky cables for relaxed cuts.

Can you wear an overshirt under a coat?

Yes, if it is unpadded or thinly padded and its sleeves are no fuller than the coat's. Cross your arms with both on: if the coat pulls across the back, the overshirt is too thick for it.

Is a shacket the same as an overshirt?

Yes. Shacket is a retail word for the same garment, a shirt-jacket hybrid; even Moncler uses it in a listing. Judge the cloth, lining and pockets, not the name.

Can you wear an overshirt to the office?

In an office without a dress code, yes: a wool, cashmere or fine check overshirt over a shirt or fine knit, with wool trousers and leather shoes, stands in for a sport coat. In a suit office, keep it for Friday.
