The Ultimate Luxury Gifts: Icons Worth the Splurge, and How to Buy Them Well

The ultimate luxury gifts are the pieces great houses have made, almost unchanged, for decades: a Hermès Kelly, a Chanel flap bag, a Van Cleef & Arpels Alhambra, a Cartier Baignoire watch, a Max Mara 101801 coat. They cost more than anything else in a gift guide because they are built to be used for twenty years and still look right, and some of them resell well, though not all do.
Below, we explain what separates a splurge worth making from an expensive mistake, including what the latest resale data says about "investment" gifts. Then we show the icons to buy new, the Hermès and Chanel pieces that are often easiest to find pre-owned, and the jewelry, watches, coats, cashmere, heirloom home pieces and beauty that belong in the same league.
What makes ultimate luxury gifts worth the splurge
We apply three tests before calling anything a splurge worth making.
- Continuity. The design has been made for decades and the house still makes it. A piece that has survived forty years of trends will survive the next ten.
- Craft you can see. Hand stitching, woven leather, dense cashmere, hand-set stones. The quality should be visible up close, not only on the label.
- Use. She should wear or use it every week. A splurge that lives in a safe is a worse gift than one that gets scuffed.
Investment gifts: what the resale data really says
Resale is growing fast. The secondary market for luxury goods is growing two to three times faster than the primary market, according to The RealReal's 2026 resale report, "The Revolution of Resale," as covered by FashionUnited. But "icon" and "investment" are not the same thing. In the same report, the Fendi Baguette's average resale price rose roughly tenfold between 2016 and 2026, from about $294 to $3,012, while the Celine Luggage and the Prada Galleria lost value over the same decade.
New prices move too. Chanel raised the price of its medium Classic Flap from $6,800 in January 2021 to $8,800 that November, in two steps, Fortune reported. Our view, as stylists rather than financial advisers: treat resale value as a bonus, never as the reason to buy. Choose the icon she will use, and the cost per wear takes care of itself. A $4,500 coat worn 60 days a winter for 15 winters works out at about $5 a wear.
The icon handbags to give new
These bags are sold new by the house or an authorized retailer, and each is either a long-running house icon or a modern design that has already become a reference point. Bottega Veneta's Andiamo, introduced in the Summer 2023 collection, is woven in intrecciato, the house's signature leather weave, and its knot detail is the one design flourish. Prada conceived the Galleria in 2007, and its Saffiano, a cross-hatched calfskin, resists scratches better than smooth leather; buy it because she will carry it daily, not for resale, since it lost value in The RealReal's comparison. Loewe's Puzzle, which Jonathan Anderson introduced in the house's spring 2015 collection, is cut from nine geometric pieces of leather, according to WWD, which gives it an angular shape that reads as architecture. Saint Laurent's Sac de Jour, Fendi's Peekaboo (first made in 2009, the house says) and Alaïa's elongated Le Teckel complete the edit.
- For the woman who works in a city: the Sac de Jour or the Galleria, structured bags that keep papers flat and stand up on a desk.
- For evenings and weekends: the small Andiamo or the small Puzzle, sized for the essentials: phone, card case, keys, a lipstick.
- Color: black and tan hold their looks longest; a deep brown intrecciato is the one color choice we would make without asking.

Icon handbags, new from the house
Pre-owned Hermès, Chanel and Van Cleef & Arpels: the realistic way to give one
Everything in this section is sold secondhand by a specialist reseller rather than by the house, which is why we label it pre-owned; a few pieces have never been worn. That is not a compromise; for the most wanted pieces it is often the only way to give one on a deadline. Hermès sells its Kelly, Birkin and Constance handbags only in its own stores, according to the availability FAQ on its US site, so none can be ordered new online. The Birkin was born in 1984, when Jane Birkin sat beside Jean-Louis Dumas, then head of Hermès, on a flight from Paris to London; the Kelly began in the 1930s as a ladies' bag with straps and took Grace Kelly's name after she was photographed carrying it. Hermès says a handmade leather bag is the work of a single artisan, who takes it through every step.
Chanel named its quilted 2.55 bag after its date of creation, February 1955. Van Cleef & Arpels created the first Alhambra long necklace, 20 clover motifs in yellow gold, in 1968, and still makes the design, so compare a reseller's price with the boutique's before you buy one secondhand; resale makes most sense for a stone or color the house no longer offers. Before you buy any of these pre-owned, check four things:
- Authentication. Buy from a reseller that authenticates every piece in-house and will take it back if it fails a second opinion.
- Condition. Read the condition notes on the product page, and look closely at corners, handles and hardware in the photographs.
- Completeness. Dust bag, box, and for Hermès the lock, keys and clochette. Missing pieces do not make a bag fake, but they matter at resale.
- Leather. Grained leathers such as Hermès Togo and Chanel caviar hide small marks; smooth Box calf and lambskin show every scratch, which some owners like as patina.

Fine jewelry with decades behind it
These pieces are new, from houses whose designs have outlived their trends. Bulgari's first Serpenti bracelet-watches date from 1948, and the serpent still runs through the house, here as a gold pendant. Its B.zero1 ring arrived in 1999, and the bracelet version keeps the spiral inspired by the Colosseum. Pomellato's Iconica bangle, Messika's Lucky Move earrings with a free-sliding diamond, and Boucheron's Quatre pendant, textured in several golds, are the other pieces we would give.
Earrings and pendants are the safest jewelry gifts. Bracelets and bangles need a wrist size, so check the size guide on each product page, or measure a bracelet she already wears. For the full picture, read our fine jewelry gift guide and our guide to investing in jewelry.

A watch she will wear for the next thirty years
A good watch is the most practical splurge on this list. Cartier's Baignoire first appeared as the Ovale cintré in 1958 and took its present name, French for bathtub, in 1973, according to Cartier's Baignoire page. The mini version runs on quartz, so it keeps time even when it sits in a drawer for a week. Chopard's Happy Sport, launched in 1993, put diamonds that move freely across the dial into a steel sports watch; the versions here are self-winding, powered by the movement of her wrist. Bulgari's Serpenti Seduttori pairs a drop-shaped case with a bracelet shaped like a serpent's scales, and Boucheron's Serpent Bohème is the jeweler's watch in the edit.
- Quartz or automatic: quartz is simplest for a woman who rotates several watches; an automatic suits someone who wears one watch daily.
- Strap or bracelet: leather straps are easy to change and to size; metal bracelets usually need adjusting by a jeweler, which is quick but worth planning before the day.
- Size: small cases wear like jewelry; if she wears her watch with long sleeves, choose one slim enough to slide under a cuff.

The coat she will wear for twenty winters
Max Mara's 101801 was designed by Anne-Marie Beretta in 1981 and is still made today: double-breasted and belted, in a wool and cashmere blend, cut generously enough to wear over a jacket. Its peers here are cashmere or cashmere blends: Max Mara's Ludmilla wrap coat, Loro Piana's shawl-collared cashmere coat, The Row's long Hariet in wool, cashmere and silk, Gabriela Hearst's camel Dee, and Brunello Cucinelli's pea coat in double beaver cloth, two thin layers of cashmere joined into one fabric that looks the same on both sides.
Coats are sized gifts, so reduce the risk. A wrap or robe coat with a belt forgives more than a fitted double-breasted one. The shoulder seam should sit at the edge of her shoulder, and the sleeve should end just past the wrist bone with a sweater underneath. If you can, borrow the coat she wears most and compare its measurements with the size guide. See more designer coats, and the story Kate's Closet: The Investment Coat Edit.
Coats built for twenty winters
Cashmere at the very top
At the top of the market, cashmere is judged by the fiber as much as the knit: finer, longer fibers make a softer yarn that pills less. Loro Piana's finest, baby cashmere, is combed from goat kids under a year old, once in the animal's life, according to the house. Its turtleneck here is 100 percent cashmere, and the Acacia cardigan blends cashmere with silk under a suede front. Brunello Cucinelli, based in the Umbrian hamlet of Solomeo, and Loro Piana make the two cashmere throws in this edit; The Row makes the dark brown Pranavi cardigan, and Tom Ford the relaxed crewneck.
- Turtleneck under a camel coat, with gray flannel trousers.
- Cashmere-silk cardigan buttoned over a slip skirt for dinner at home.
- A cashmere throw for the sofa, the gift the whole household will use.

Heirlooms for the house
For a couple, a household or the woman who has everything, the heirloom piece is one that will be used at every holiday table for the next fifty years. Baccarat has made crystal since 1764; its Celemine vase is a statement piece, while the Louxor vase and the full-lead crystal Rearing Horse are smaller ways in. Christofle, founded in 1830, named its Malmaison pattern after the château of Napoleon and Joséphine, and the pedestal centerpiece bowl carries its palm and lotus frieze. Its Mood Asia set packs silver-plated chopsticks with their rests, soup spoons and more, 24 pieces for six, into the house's egg-shaped Mood case. Ginori 1735's Oriente Italiano tureen is handcrafted porcelain and, according to its listing, dishwasher safe.

The most luxurious beauty gifts
With beauty, splurge on size and ritual rather than novelty. If she already uses Crème de la Mer, the cream developed by aerospace physicist Dr. Max Huber, the 16.5-ounce jar is the grandest version of her routine. La Mer's Genaissance ritual, Clé de Peau Beauté's Synactif night cream, Sisley's Supremÿa At Night and Augustinus Bader's twelve-day set are the other creams we would give to a woman who already has a routine she loves. Creed's Acqua Fiorentina comes here in the house's flacon, a bottle for the dressing table rather than the handbag.

Splurge gifts by budget
Where each level of spending goes furthest, using the houses in this guide. Houses reprice their icons, as the Chanel example above shows, so read these bands as a guide; each product card carries today's price.

How we chose
- Icons only: designs with a long, documented history at the house, or modern bags that have already become reference points.
- New first: every module except one sells new pieces from the house or an authorized retailer. Pre-owned pieces appear only in the section headed pre-owned, because that is often the only way to buy a Hermès or vintage Chanel bag on a deadline.
- Screened listings: we checked each listing's source and condition notes, moved anything secondhand out of the new modules, and limited the watch edit's automatic replacements to houses whose new watches we carry.
- Use over resale: we chose pieces for how often she will use them, and told you where the resale data is less kind.
- Availability: everything was in stock when we checked; prices change, so the product cards show the current price.
Frequently asked questions
What are the most luxurious gifts for her?
The most luxurious gifts are the long-running icons of the great houses: a Hermès Kelly or Birkin, a Chanel flap bag, a Van Cleef & Arpels Alhambra piece, a Cartier watch or a Max Mara 101801 coat. The best choice is the one she will use every week.
Are designer bags a good investment?
Some hold or grow their value, many do not. In The RealReal's 2026 resale report, the Fendi Baguette's average resale price rose about tenfold between 2016 and 2026, while the Celine Luggage and Prada Galleria lost value. Buy a bag to use it, and treat resale value as a bonus.
Is it acceptable to give a pre-owned luxury gift?
Yes, especially for Hermès, which sells its Kelly, Birkin and Constance bags only in its stores. Buy from a reseller that authenticates every piece, and read the condition notes before you choose.
How much should you spend on a splurge gift?
Spend what you are comfortable with on the single best version of something she will use daily. A coat, a watch or a bag used every week for a decade costs little per wear.
How do I know a pre-owned Hermès or Chanel bag is authentic?
Buy from a specialist reseller that authenticates in-house and offers a return if a piece fails an independent check. Ask what comes with the bag (dust bag, box, lock and keys) and read the condition report.
