What to Wear in Gstaad: The Promenade, the Slopes and Dinner at the Palace

What to wear in Gstaad in winter is decided by water more than by cold. The village sits at 1,050 meters (about 3,450 feet), low for a famous Alpine resort, so most days from December to March climb above freezing in the afternoon and fall well below it at night: slush on the Promenade at lunch, ice on the same street after dinner. Pack a hooded coat with a water-repellent shell, boots with rubber or lug soles (fully waterproof ones for wet days), alpaca and cashmere knits, a ski outfit if you will ski Eggli, Wispile or Wasserngrat, and evening clothes that work with the shoes you change into at the door, because the Gstaad Palace lists snow shoes among what it does not permit in its restaurants and bars in the evening.
Below: the weather and the 2026–27 dates, then a Gstaad day and night, from the Promenade and the slopes to dinner at the Palace and New Year's Eve, with pieces from Moncler, Max Mara, Brunello Cucinelli and thirty-one other houses. What to wear in Gstaad: the weather and the 2026–27 dates
Gstaad's tourism office describes a "sophisticated traffic-free chalet village" at 1,050 meters, with its winter sports areas between 1,000 and 3,000 meters. MeteoSwiss, the federal weather office, publishes no 1991–2020 temperature averages for Gstaad itself, so every figure in the table comes from its climate normals for one station, Château-d'Oex: the nearest that has them, about 11 km down the valley and 22 meters lower than Gstaad. Temperatures are in Fahrenheit, rounded.
| Month | Average high | Average low | Nights below freezing | Days with rain or snow | What it means for your suitcase |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| December | 38°F | 24°F | 26 | 12 | A hooded coat, rubber-soled boots and gloves every day |
| January | 37°F | 22°F | 28 | 11 | The coldest nights: a thin base layer under evening knits |
| February | 39°F | 22°F | 26 | 9 | Nights as cold as January's, longer and brighter afternoons |
| March | 47°F | 28°F | 22 | 11 | Spring snow: a vest by day, the coat still at night |
The figure that explains the Gstaad wardrobe is not in the table: in January, Château-d'Oex records frost on about 28 nights, yet only about nine days stay below freezing all day. Most days thaw by early afternoon and freeze again after dark, and rain or snow falls on roughly one day in three. So this guide favors water-repellent shells, rubber soles and wool over suede, and plans for the walk home from dinner.
| 2026–27 dates | What | Dress for |
|---|---|---|
| Daily from Nov 7 to Apr 30 | Glacier 3000 ski area | The coldest kit you own |
| From Nov 20 | Saanerslochgrat lift, Saanenmöser, if there is snow (to Apr 4) | Ski wear |
| Dec 15 to Mar 7 | Gstaad Palace winter season | Evening shoes to change into |
| Daily from Dec 18 | Wasserngrat (to Mar 21), Rinderberg and Horneggli (to Mar 29) | Ski wear and a lunch sweater |
| Daily from Dec 19 | Eggli and La Videmanette (to Mar 14) | Ski wear for wet lower runs |
| Dec 26 to Feb 28 | Wispile: daily to Jan 3, then Thursday to Sunday | Ski or sledging clothes |
| Dec 31 | New Year's Eve; "The Frozen Kingdom" at The Alpina Gstaad | Silver, ice blue and white |
| Thursdays to Feb 25 | Eggli Night Vibes: night skiing, fondue and a party | Ski wear and a warm knit |
| Jan 23 to 31 | International Hot Air Balloon Festival, Château-d'Oex | A long coat, rubber boots and a hat |
| Jan 29 to Feb 6 | Sommets Musicaux de Gstaad | A knit dress and boots |
Lift dates come from Gstaad Mountain Rides' 2026–27 operating schedule and depend on snow. You will not need a polo outfit: the tourism office's list of top events puts the Hublot Polo Gold Cup in August (August 20–23 in 2026), and Gstaad holds no polo on snow.
On the Promenade: Gstaad outfits start with the coat
The village center is traffic-free: restaurants, shops, hotels and bars along the Promenade, the main shopping street. An afternoon there loops from a wet street into a warm boutique and back. Choose the coat for three things, in this order:
- A face that sheds water. Wet snow sits on water-repellent nylon or dense cotton until you brush it off; a plain wool or cashmere coat soaks it up and is still damp at dinner.
- A hood you can see out of. An adjustable or drawstring hood stays put in falling snow; a decorative one does not.
- Parts that come apart. Afternoons run 14 to 19°F warmer than nights, and the shops are heated. Moncler's Effraie is a cotton-blend parka with a detachable puffer inside; its Hemiptere is a wool-and-cashmere coat, a down vest, or both worn together.
Prada's black Re-Nylon down jacket has a drawstring hood and a belt that pulls it in at the waist; its listing says it fits up to one size larger, which leaves room for a thick knit. Brunello Cucinelli's techno cotton taffeta down jacket has a detachable cashmere knit hood. Max Mara's Divina is cashmere on one side and a water-repellent shell on the other: cashmere out on a dry day, shell out on a wet one. Burberry's belted, double-breasted quilted coat hides its check inside a detachable hood.
- Olive and ivory: Moncler's olive Effraie, its hood trimmed in tan shearling, over Isabel Marant's ivory alpaca sweater, ecru wool trousers and Miu Miu's espresso padded boots.
- Navy and gray: Burberry's navy coat over Gabriela Hearst's gray May turtleneck, charcoal trousers and black lace-up boots.
- Ivory and black: Max Mara's ivory Divina with a black turtleneck, black trousers and Phoebe Philo's shearling-lined black boots.

Boots for slush at noon and ice at night
Afternoon slush and evening ice often come on the same day, so pack boots for different jobs rather than one compromise pair.
- Rubber for the wettest days. Burberry's tall riding-style boots are rubber from sole to shaft, with a fabric lining. Rubber does not insulate, so wear a wool sock.
- Leather on a rubber sole for town and dinner. Gianvito Rossi's smooth-leather lace-ups sit on a 20 mm grooved rubber platform; Valentino's VLogo combat boots have a lugged rubber sole, a 25 mm heel and a side zip; Aquazzura's Very Cortina mixes leather and suede, also with a side zip, so you are not relacing in a cold hallway. Smooth leather wipes clean; suede stains with salt and slush.
- Warmth inside for the dry, cold days. Phoebe Philo's black leather ankle boots are lined in shearling, with a tie cord at the ankle and thick, light rubber soles; Miu Miu's are padded lamb leather on a rubber sole.
Bottega Veneta's Lug boot has a 65 mm block heel: the most polished pair, best kept for cleared streets. Dry every pair at room temperature, stuffed with paper, never on a radiator. Browse more cold-weather boots.

Gstaad style: the chalet-village sweater
Indoors the coat comes off within a minute, so the sweater is what people see for most of the day. Choose it for texture and the way it sits over trousers, then for warmth.
- Alpaca for warmth without bulk. Isabel Marant's Thais is baby alpaca, loose, with a fold-over neckline buttoned at one shoulder. Moncler's ivory turtleneck blends wool and alpaca with a little cashmere in an openwork knit.
- Fine knits for under everything. Gabriela Hearst's May, a close-fitting gray turtleneck in wool, cashmere and silk; The Row's Nabari, an oversized ivory turtleneck in featherweight cashmere; and Moncler's red turtleneck in extra-fine merino, knitted with a faint stripe.
- Pattern, once. Maison Margiela's brushed V-neck in wool, alpaca and mohair, knitted with pink tulips, is the loudest piece here; Carolina Herrera's Chalet crewneck has a spray of roses embroidered at the chest; Thom Browne's wool Aran cardigan carries the house's four stripes on one sleeve.
- Ivory and charcoal: Thom Browne's Aran cardigan over a cream turtleneck, charcoal flares and black lace-up boots.
- Red and gray: Moncler's red merino turtleneck with Carolina Herrera's charcoal flares and black leather lace-ups.
- Gray and cream: Gabriela Hearst's May with cream wool trousers and Aquazzura's black Very Cortina boots.
Buy the cashmere turtleneck and the Aran cardigan once; the tulip sweater and the embroidered knit are this season's pleasures. Browse more designer sweaters, or see our après-ski outfits for knits that work in a lodge.

On the slopes: Swiss Alps ski outfits for Eggli, Wispile and Wasserngrat
Gstaad's skiing is spread over separate mountains, not one linked area. The tourism office calls Eggli–La Videmanette, whose lift starts in the village, "a charming boutique ski area"; Gstaad Mountain Rides says the run from La Videmanette above Rougemont is the destination's longest, 7.5 km with a 1,160-meter drop. Wispile, "The Family Mountain", has gentle slopes, a learning park and the Zückerli and Rüti lifts for first turns. Wasserngrat, at 1,920 meters, has three runs, including the black Tiger Run, and Rinderberg–Saanersloch–Horneggli links Schönried, Saanenmöser, Zweisimmen and St. Stephan with more than 105 km of slopes, the tourism office says.
The La Videmanette run ends "down to the valley" at Rougemont, in the operator's words, so its last stretch is skied at village level, where afternoons usually thaw the snow. Choose the jacket for the bottom of the run as well as the top: a water-repellent face, a powder skirt that keeps snow from under the jacket when you fall, and wrist gaiters. Moncler Grenoble's Arabbas has a powder skirt and jersey wrist gaiters, with down fill, a pull-out hood and a shearling collar; the black Blainville puts the same skirt and gaiters under water-repellent polyester, with a Western yoke picked out in piping. The house's insulated suit is four-way-stretch, water-repellent poplin with powder cuffs and a belt that carries a carabiner for your gloves.
- Black and ivory: the Blainville over black ski pants, an ivory base layer and Isabel Marant's ivory alpaca beanie for lunch.
- Navy and gray: the navy Arabbas over charcoal ski pants and a gray wool base layer; its shearling collar does the work of a scarf.
- All in one: the black insulated suit, belted, with goggles for the run and shield sunglasses in a pocket for the terrace.
This edit is short on purpose: for base layers, helmets and waterproof ratings, read what to wear skiing, and for head-to-toe looks, the best ski outfits for women. Moncler Grenoble sizes jackets in numbers, not letters; try one over the mid layer you will ski in.

Lunch on the mountain, and fondue in a giant caquelon
The tourism office counts more than 18 mountain restaurants in the region, and the Eggli Lounge and the Berghaus Wispile both have sun terraces. The detour worth planning starts at the Wispile mountain house, at 1,907 meters: a winter path along the ridge leads to a giant fondue caquelon, a pot-shaped shelter that seats up to eight and cannot be reserved. Order the fondue backpack (cheese, bread, pot, burner, plates and forks) from the dairies the day before, the tourism office's trail listing says, and after January 3 go on a Thursday to Sunday, when the gondola runs.
Lunch is where the ski jacket comes off, so the layer under it should look finished. A vest keeps your core warm with your arms free; a half-zip lets you cool down at the table without pulling anything over your hair. Loro Piana's Rocky vest is a wind- and water-repellent quilted shell with a ribbed-knit collar; Max Mara's Canditi reverses, with a plush-trimmed funnel neck; Isabel Marant's Florana is cropped shearling that closes on hidden hooks. Brunello Cucinelli's charcoal half-zip, in wool and cashmere, is slim enough to wear under a ski jacket. Fondue clings to wool, so air the knit by an open window overnight.
- Shearling and charcoal: Isabel Marant's Florana over Brunello Cucinelli's charcoal half-zip, with black ski pants.
- Gray and sand: Loro Piana's beige Rocky vest over Victoria Beckham's gray wool-and-cashmere half-zip, with cream ski pants.
- Black and ivory: Max Mara's black Canditi gilet over the house's ivory wool-and-cashmere half-zip.

Sledging, winter walks and the balloon festival
The tourism office counts 30 toboggan runs in the region. The Wispile run to Gsteig is 8.2 km, rated moderate, and takes about two hours, starting with a 40-minute climb; the Eggli run is 6.4 km; and between January 23 and February 20, Gstaad Mountain Rides runs full-moon sledging at Saanersloch. Down the valley, Château-d'Oex holds its International Hot Air Balloon Festival from January 23 to 31, 2027: nine days of flights and competitions, watched outdoors. You sit in snow on a sled and stand in it at the festival, so dress from the ground up:
- Waterproof below the waist. Ski pants, not jeans or wool trousers, which soak through in one run.
- Boots that brake. You stop a sled by pressing both feet flat into the snow beside the runners, so the BFU, Switzerland's accident-prevention council, advises high, sturdy boots with a good tread, and heel spikes that strap on when the run is icy.
- A helmet and goggles. The same BFU kit list includes a helmet (a ski helmet, or a bike helmet), ski goggles and a back protector.
- Gloves that grip. Moncler Grenoble's padded ski gloves have leather on the palms and fingertips. Keep knit mittens for the walk up: the listing photo shows Max Mara's alpaca, wool and silk teddy mittens on a long cord with a clip, so you cannot drop one in a field.
- Something over the face. A wool balaclava such as Max Mara's, and shield sunglasses for the glare at the balloon field.

Glacier 3000: dress for the top, not the village
The tourism office says the glacier ski area is "only some 15 minutes away" from Gstaad, and Glacier 3000 opens daily from November 7 to April 30. At 3,000 meters, it has what it calls the only suspension bridge in the world linking two mountain peaks, the Peak Walk by Tissot. That is nearly 2,000 meters above the village, so even for the view and lunch, wear ski kit or its equivalent: an insulated jacket, a balaclava, gloves, wraparound sunglasses and boots with real grip.
The Sommets Musicaux and chalet dinners: wool, not silk
The Sommets Musicaux de Gstaad, the classical festival led by the violinist Renaud Capuçon and held since 2001, runs from January 29 to February 6, 2027, with concerts in Gstaad, Saanen and Rougemont. We found no published dress code. Dress for two hours seated, often after a walk over snow: a knit dress or wool trousers, opaque tights, a cashmere layer and boots you can keep on all evening.
The same clothes suit dinner in a private chalet; ask whether boots stay at the door, and bring velvet slippers if they do. Givenchy's maxi is pure wool with slant pockets and a front slit for walking; Carolina Herrera's Diane flares, in stretch virgin wool, come from its Chalet collection.
- Black and ivory: Givenchy's wool maxi with black opaque tights, Gianvito Rossi's black lace-up boots and Max Mara's ivory Divina.
- Merlot and cream: Carolina Herrera's merlot flares, a cream cashmere half-zip and Saint Laurent's burgundy velvet loafers.
- Black and white: Max Mara's striped Agreste knit dress, cinched at the waist, with black tights and Valentino's black combat boots.

Dinner at the Gstaad Palace: what the dress code says
The Gstaad Palace, open for winter from December 15, 2026, to March 7, 2027, publishes its dress code. From 7 pm, gentlemen are asked to wear a jacket in Le Grill, the Bar du Grill and the Veranda section of Le Grand, and to refrain from open-toe shoes and shorts. The code continues: "Caps & hats, coats, hoodies, hiking & snow shoes, t-shirts, ripped jeans and sport shoes are not permitted in the restaurants and bars in the evening." The code applies in the lobby and the hotel's other restaurants too. It says nothing specific about women's clothes; read literally, it means leaving the coat outside and changing out of anything resembling a hiking or snow shoe. Velvet and wool crêpe read as evening and stay warm through the car ride; satin wants a wrap. ALAÏA's burgundy jersey gown has long sleeves and a high neck; Jil Sander's floor-length wool dress has short sleeves and an open back, so pack a cashmere layer with it.
- Navy velvet: Balmain's velvet dress, gathered by a bow at the waist below a lace bust, sheer navy tights and Manolo Blahnik's embellished navy satin pumps.
- Red and cream: Emilia Wickstead's red Jianna maxi in wool crêpe, a cream cashmere wrap and The Row's midnight velvet slippers.
- Black trousers: Dolce & Gabbana's slim velvet trousers, an ivory silk blouse and ALAÏA's crystal-embellished flats.
- Olive and burgundy: Tom Ford's draped olive jersey gown, a cream cashmere wrap and Aquazzura's burgundy velvet platform pumps.

Christmas and New Year's Eve in Gstaad
By Christmas week the Palace and, snow allowing, most lifts are open. For New Year's Eve, a Thursday this year, The Alpina Gstaad lists its party as "The Frozen Kingdom", from 7 pm to 1 am with live musicians; the listing gives no dress code. A theme like that invites silver, ice blue and white.
- Silver gown: Emilia Wickstead's Harlow in metallic cloqué, embroidered with flowers, with Roger Vivier's silver flats and a cashmere wrap.
- Silver and gray: Tom Ford's paillette rib-knit tunic over Brunello Cucinelli's gray pinstripe wide-leg trousers, shot with lamé thread.
- Ice blue: Tom Ford's crepe-jersey gown in Frost, long-sleeved, with a twisted open back and a high-low hem.
- Christmas Eve: Moncler's crimson wool-and-cashmere turtleneck and its matching midi skirt, with sheer black tights and Gianvito Rossi's black velvet Mary Janes.

- Four knits: two cashmere turtlenecks, one alpaca or cable sweater, one cardigan or vest.
- Two pairs of wool trousers, one in a color other than black.
- If you ski: jacket and pants or a suit, base layers, helmet, goggles and padded gloves. Our ski vacation outfits plan the week day by day.
- Two evening looks, one knit for concerts and chalets, one velvet, crêpe or metallic for the Palace, with opaque and sheer tights, evening shoes in a pouch and velvet slippers.
- Mittens, a balaclava, a beanie, and shield and wraparound sunglasses.
Not sure what works with what you already own? Ask our AI stylist to build your Gstaad week around the coat and boots in your closet.
What to buy once, and what to leave at home
Spend on the coat, the rubber-soled boots and the cashmere turtleneck: you will wear them every day of the trip and in every city winter after it. The ski jacket earns its price only if you ski at least a week a year. The silver gown, the embroidered sweater and the tulip knit are pleasures for this trip. Leave at home suede ankle boots, a cashmere coat with no shell and stilettos you plan to walk in: in a village that thaws and freezes daily, they stay in the closet.
How we chose
- Weather first: coats with a nylon, quilted-shell or dense cotton outer, or a modular build like the Hemiptere's, because Gstaad's problem is wet snow more than deep cold.
- Soles: every boot for daytime has a rubber or lug sole; evening shoes were chosen to be carried, not walked in.
- Ski wear: only pieces whose listings name a powder skirt, wrist gaiters or powder cuffs.
- Fiber: alpaca, cashmere, merino and wool for the day; velvet, wool crêpe, satin, lamé and paillettes for evening.
- Range: 74 pieces from 34 houses, no more than three from one house in any edit, no pre-owned pieces, and the widest size runs we could find.
Frequently asked questions
What should I wear in Gstaad in winter?
A hooded coat with a water-repellent shell, rubber-soled boots, alpaca and cashmere knits, wool trousers or knit dresses, ski wear if you ski, and evening looks with shoes to change into. Expect slush in the afternoon and ice at night.
Is there a dress code in Gstaad?
Not a village-wide one. The Gstaad Palace publishes its own: gentlemen are asked to wear a jacket from 7 pm in Le Grill, the Bar du Grill and the Veranda of Le Grand, and caps and hats, coats, hoodies, hiking and snow shoes, t-shirts, ripped jeans and sport shoes are not permitted in its restaurants and bars in the evening. Elsewhere, ask when you book.
Do I need snow boots in Gstaad?
You need rubber or lug soles, and on wet days fully waterproof boots too: Gstaad thaws most afternoons and refreezes at night. Pack a waterproof boot, a shearling-lined one and evening shoes to change into.
When does the ski season start in Gstaad in 2026–27?
The first lift, Saanerslochgrat at Saanenmöser, is scheduled from November 20, 2026, if there is snow. Most areas run daily from December 18 or 19; Wispile runs daily from December 26 to January 3, then Thursday to Sunday until February 28; the last lift closes on April 4. Glacier 3000 opens daily from November 7 to April 30. All dates depend on snow.
Is there polo on snow in Gstaad?
No. Gstaad's polo tournament, the Hublot Polo Gold Cup, is played in August. The best-known polo on snow is the Snow Polo World Cup St. Moritz, on January 22–24, 2027; see our St. Moritz guide for what to wear on the frozen lake.
What do you wear to the Sommets Musicaux de Gstaad?
We found no published dress code. Wear a knit dress or wool trousers, opaque tights and boots you can sit in for two hours. The 2027 festival runs January 29 to February 6.
