What to Wear in Courchevel: Outfits for the Slopes, Lunch, Après and 1850 Nights

What to wear in Courchevel depends on the hour more than the weather. A winter day in Courchevel 1850 runs through five dress codes: the slopes, a long lunch at an altitude restaurant, après, dinner and the clubs that open after it, with an afternoon on the shopping street in between. Pack one technical ski outfit (a belted insulated jacket with ski pants, or a one-piece suit), a sweater that looks finished when the jacket comes off at lunch, snow boots with a rubber sole for the village, one serious coat for the shopping street, a velvet or fine-knit dress for dinner, and one piece with sequins or Lurex for the night. The 2026–27 season runs from December 4, 2026, to April 18, 2027.
Below, we follow a Courchevel day in order, with the venues the resort lists, complete outfits and pieces from Moncler Grenoble, Dior, Brunello Cucinelli, TOTEME, Roger Vivier and about thirty other houses. For the technical layers, see our guide to what to wear skiing.
What to wear in Courchevel: the season, the weather and the day
Courchevel is six villages: Courchevel 1850, Moriond, Village, Le Praz, La Tania and Saint-Bon. The resort's own site calls 1850 "the historic and symbolic heart" of Courchevel (Courchevel 1850, courchevel.com). The same site counts 150 kilometers (about 93 miles) of marked slopes, all part of Les 3 Vallées, with much of the resort above 1,800 meters, roughly 5,900 feet (Courchevel ski area).
Les 3 Vallées publishes the 2026–27 dates: Courchevel opens on Friday, December 4, 2026, and closes on Sunday, April 18, 2027. Moriond and La Tania close earlier, on April 11 (Les 3 Vallées opening dates). Snow conditions can still change them.
We found no long-term climate record for Courchevel itself; the nearest from Météo-France inside Les 3 Vallées is the 1991–2020 sheet for Saint-Martin-de-Belleville, whose station sits at 1,443 meters. There, January averages a high of about 38°F and a low of about 21°F, with frost on roughly 29 nights out of 31 (Météo-France climate sheet). Much of Courchevel sits at least 350 meters higher, so expect colder than those figures, and a wide swing between a sunny terrace at noon and the walk to dinner.
| Moment | Where | What to wear | The piece to get right |
|---|---|---|---|
| Morning | Pralong, Ariondaz and Bellecôte for beginners; the Saulire for the rest | Base layer, mid layer, insulated jacket and ski pants, or a suit | A powder skirt and a ski-pass pocket |
| Lunch | Le Chalet de Pierres, Le Cap Horn, Bagatelle | Ski clothes, jacket off indoors | The sweater |
| Après | Bars in Le Praz, Village and Moriond | Ski pants or knit trousers, a beanie | Snow boots |
| Shopping | The boutiques along the Croisette | A coat that opens easily, a small bag | The coat |
| Dinner | Hotel dining rooms and restaurants in 1850 | Velvet or a fine-knit dress, tights | Boots for the walk |
| Late | Les Caves de Courchevel, La Ferme Saint-Amour, Le Piaf | Sequins, Lurex or leather | A clutch |
On the slopes: French Alps ski outfits for the Saulire
Courchevel's own guide sends beginners to the wide green and blue slopes at Pralong, Ariondaz and Bellecôte, and stronger skiers to red and black runs such as Jean-Blanc, Jockeys and what it calls the "legendary" Combe de la Saulire. Because the lifts link into the rest of Les 3 Vallées, dress for the highest, windiest lift you plan to ride, not for the village you leave from.
Spend on the jacket and pants, and read the listing rather than the logo. Look for a powder skirt, which stops snow riding up your back when you fall; wrist gaiters or powder cuffs; and a fabric that moves. Moncler Grenoble's Tolima is cut from four-way stretch nylon, has a powder skirt and a ski-pass pocket, and comes with a detachable belt. Moncler Grenoble's insulated ski pants are water- and windproof, with powder cuffs and a RECCO reflector that rescue teams can locate, a backup for rescuers, not a substitute for an avalanche transceiver off-piste.
Then choose between separates and a suit. A one-piece closes the gap at the small of your back on a cold chairlift and looks deliberate at lunch. Moncler Grenoble's black suit adds a long-haired shearling collar, a belt and zip cuffs that open over ski boots. The trade-off: every bathroom trip means unzipping the top half, so wear a base layer you are happy to be seen in. Separates suit a beginner's week better.
Two pieces below are fashion-led. Balenciaga's ski hoodie (a shaggy recycled fleece, padded and fully lined, with a two-way zip) and its blush cargo ski pants (coated canvas, professional wet clean only) look right on the mountain, but neither listing gives a waterproof rating or mentions a powder skirt or cuffs, and fleece will not keep out wet snow. We would keep them for a dry, bright day on gentler runs. Brunello Cucinelli's taupe hooded ski jacket is a stretch shell with synthetic fill and thumb holes at the cuffs, and its listing allows a machine wash at 30°C (86°F), which matters over a week of daily wear.
- Black and ivory: Moncler Grenoble's shearling-collared black suit, an ivory pom-pom beanie for when the helmet comes off and black shield sunglasses in a pocket for lunch.
- Taupe and black: Brunello Cucinelli's taupe hooded jacket over black insulated ski pants and a gray cashmere turtleneck.
- Black and blush, for a dry, sunny afternoon: Balenciaga's black fleece ski hoodie over a cream turtleneck, with the blush cargo pants, whose black pocket panels pick up the hoodie.
On fit: Moncler Grenoble numbers its jackets 0 to 3 on these listings, and its suit and pants run XS or S to L. Try a ski jacket on over the mid layer you will wear, then reach forward as if planting a pole; the cuffs should still cover your wrists. Lunch at the altitude restaurants: the sweater is the outfit
Le Chalet de Pierres sits on the Verdons slope at the Jardin Alpin, in a former railway station from the Maurienne valley; the tourist office's listing describes a south-facing position, terrace tables on two floors, a shellfish and seafood buffet on the terrace and a Beaufort tart as the signature dish, and notes that dinners there are private events only. The same office lists Le Cap Horn, on the road to the Altiport, as established in 1954 and the oldest altitude restaurant in Courchevel 1850, with a south-facing terrace and a covered one. Bagatelle, at the top of the Chenus gondola, is listed both as a restaurant on the slopes and as a "dancing restaurant".
At all three you sit for a long time in strong sun or a warm room, with the jacket on the back of the chair, so choose the sweater under it as you would a top for a restaurant in town.
- Texture that reads across a table: jacquard, cable or brushed mohair, in a color that is not the color of your ski pants.
- A neck you can adjust: Brunello Cucinelli's brushed mohair half-zip opens to a wide collar on a hot terrace and closes for the next lift.
- A length that suits ski pants: a cropped knit, such as Tom Ford's mohair-silk turtleneck, sits over high-waisted ski pants or a suit tied at the waist without bunching.
- A vest for the terrace: Max Mara's down vest has a shell that is 96 percent cashmere, so it reads as tailoring rather than ski wear, and it comes off in the dining room.
Two practical notes. Brushed mohair sheds onto a black ski suit, so pair it with ivory, gray or taupe, or pack a lint roller. And if lunch at Bagatelle turns into dancing, you will be dancing in ski boots, so everything that matters is above the knee.
- Le Chalet de Pierres: the black ski suit unzipped and tied at the waist over Moncler Grenoble's slate-blue jacquard sweater, with black shield sunglasses.
- Le Cap Horn: Dior's navy DiorAlps sweater, its Fair Isle yoke embroidered with sequins, over black ski pants, with Max Mara's gray cashmere down vest.
- Bagatelle: Loro Piana's camel-hair jacquard sweater over cream ski pants, with an ivory pom-pom beanie.
Gabriela Hearst's listing says its walnut cashmere mock-neck fits true to size, and Tom Ford's and Loro Piana's describe relaxed or slightly loose cuts, so stay with your usual size over a base layer. Our après-ski guide goes deeper into lodge sweaters.

Hats, gloves and sunglasses for a day at altitude
Accessories here have three jobs: wind in the lift line, glare on the terrace, and warmth without flattened hair on the walk to dinner.
- Gondolas and the village: Miu Miu's camel aviator hat, in wool and cashmere lined with shearling, has earflaps that tie under the chin; Moncler Grenoble's wool-and-cashmere beanie with a shearling pom-pom goes on the moment the helmet comes off.
- The terrace: a shield frame with a dark lens. Saint Laurent's acetate shield has a lens about 99 millimeters wide, covering the sides of your eyes as well as the front.
- The walk to dinner: earmuffs rather than a hat, so your hair survives. Moncler's wool pair has a teddy trim.
- Your hands: two pairs. Gabriela Hearst's mocha shearling gloves for the village by day (on the slopes you need proper ski gloves). For evening, Khaite's long black nappa gloves, lined in silk, pulled over the cuff of your coat so no wrist shows.

Après in Courchevel, and the boots for the walk home
Après in Courchevel is spread across the villages. Les 3 Vallées' own guide to going out names La Descente in Le Praz, a bar popular with skiers for its location; Le Catérail in Courchevel Village, a gathering spot for locals and visitors; and two pubs in Moriond, the Funky Fox, known for live concerts and DJ sets, and Copiña (Les 3 Vallées: where to go out in Courchevel). Wherever you end up, the walk back is over packed snow, in boots rather than ski boots.
- A grippy sole: most pairs here are on rubber, and Prada's and Balenciaga's have the deepest lugs.
- Shearling inside, or only at the collar: Burberry's and Prada's ankle boots are shearling-lined with shearling insoles; Gianvito Rossi's lace-up combat boot has shearling at the collar and tongue, so it is slimmer under trousers.
- A low heel: the Gianvito Rossi combat boot sits on a 20 mm flat heel. Isabel Marant's Nowles hides a wedge inside the boot, so your heel sits higher than the flat outsole suggests: fine in the village, less steady on ice.
- A fastening you can manage with cold hands: The Row's Zipped boot opens with a single front zip; the Moon Boot, the Nowles and Balenciaga's Combat Strike lace up, which takes longer but lets you tighten them over a thick sock.
The Moon Boot X Moncler Grenoble Icon comes in size ranges (36–38 and 39–41 here), so try it with the thick sock you will wear; at the bottom of a range, the sock takes up the room.
- Le Praz, straight off the slope: black ski pants, Dior's navy DiorAlps sweater, Gianvito Rossi's black shearling-lined boots and a black beanie.
- Moriond, with music: Balenciaga's blush cargo ski pants, an ivory cable sweater and the ivory Moon Boots.

Courchevel 1850 style: an afternoon on the Croisette
Courchevel's tourist office places most of the resort's luxury shops along the Croisette, in the heart of 1850, close to the grand hotels and the slopes. You step in and out of heated boutiques all afternoon, so the coat should open in one movement, keep you warm outside and not cook you indoors.
- Down, for the coldest days: Max Mara's hooded coat is in camel hair, filled with down and reversible, with a detachable belt and a two-way zip. Jil Sander's long down coat has a funnel neck. Brunello Cucinelli's belted shell coat has a plush-lined hood that comes off.
- Shearling, for dry and bright days: TOTEME's black-and-natural shearling jacket and Isabel Marant's reversible Roama in ecru. For a longer line, Valentino Garavani's belted black-and-white herringbone coat has shearling at the cuffs and falls below the knee.
- A short jacket, for a short walk: Dior's black-and-white DiorAlps Cannage puffer is cropped, waterproof and drawn in at the hem; Dior suggests the matching skort for après. Prada's charcoal Re-Wool down jacket, belted in leather, is the tailored version.
- Camel and cream: Max Mara's camel-hair coat, belted, over a cream turtleneck, ivory wool trousers and the ivory Moon Boots.
- Black and natural: TOTEME's shearling jacket over a black turtleneck and black leather trousers, with black shearling-lined boots and Roger Vivier's ivory shearling bag.
- Black, white and gray: Dior's Cannage puffer with a gray cashmere turtleneck, charcoal trousers and black lug boots.

The bag: small, shearling and worn across the body
Shopping in gloves calls for both hands free, so a long strap beats a top handle. Roger Vivier's micro Pilgrim hangs from a chain-and-leather strap, Saint Laurent's Jamie is about six inches tall on a detachable crossbody strap, and ALAÏA's heart-shaped Le Coeur is in shaved shearling on an adjustable strap. For the evening, Loewe's Flamenco clutch is leather outside and dyed shearling inside. Fendi's Baguette 26424 revisits the bag's original 1997 version in vintage-effect black shearling. If a shearling bag gets wet, let it dry at room temperature away from a radiator, then brush the pile.

Dinner in Courchevel 1850: velvet, fine knits and a long coat
None of the official listings we checked, from the tourist office or Les 3 Vallées, gives a dress code for a Courchevel restaurant or club, so each room sets its own, and some tables run late: Les 3 Vallées describes La Ferme Saint-Amour as fine dining combined with a nightclub. Ask what the room expects when you book, and dress for the walk there as much as for the table.
Velvet and fine knits solve both: warm outside, evening clothes inside, and happy with flat boots or heels. Wear opaque tights in the color of the dress to keep the line long and the legs warm, and keep jewelry close to the body so it survives a scarf and a coat.
- Forest green: Emilia Wickstead's velvet midi, belted, with pockets in the pleated skirt, worn with black tights, black shearling-lined boots and Jil Sander's long black down coat.
- Navy: Gabriela Hearst's Amor dress in navy cashmere and silk, navy tights, Khaite's long black gloves and Prada's charcoal belted down jacket.
- Dark brown: Alexander McQueen's rib-knit wool midi with its fluted, ruffled hem, chocolate tights and Prada's dark brown shearling-lined boots, under Max Mara's camel-hair coat.
Velvet crushes under a belt or after a long car ride; hang it in a steamy bathroom to lift the pile. Fold knit dresses rather than hanging them, or they grow. Magda Butrym's off-the-shoulder velvet minidress, edged in crochet, is the dressiest option here; Victoria Beckham's navy Bela midi, ruched at the waist with split flutter sleeves, is the quieter velvet. For more velvet, see our guide to the best velvet dresses, or browse knit dresses.

Courchevel nightlife: what to wear to Les Caves and the late tables
Les 3 Vallées describes Les Caves de Courchevel, in the heart of 1850, as "the go-to destination for fans of prestigious evenings", and lists Le Piaf, also in 1850, as a place where fine dining, live music and dancing come together. Its guide gives no dress code for either, so we would dress a notch above dinner and ask the hotel concierge if unsure.
Sequins, Lurex and leather catch the light in a dark room. Three details matter:
- Separates are warmer than a dress. A sequined top with leather trousers keeps your legs covered for the walk and the line at the door.
- Sequins and shearling do not mix. A shearling coat or a crossbody strap rubs against sequins and can pull them loose, so carry a clutch and wear a smooth down coat over a sequined dress.
- Boots for the walk, heels for the room. If you change, leave the boots at the cloakroom.
- Champagne and black: Missoni's champagne-and-gold zigzag top with Versace's black leather trousers, black shearling-lined boots and Loewe's black leather Flamenco clutch.
- Silver: Carolina Herrera's silver sequined column, sheer black tights, The Row's black boots for the walk and Jil Sander's long down coat.
- Bronze: Valentino's bronze Lurex bodysuit, twisted at the front, with ivory wool trousers and the ivory Moon Boots.

- Village: one long coat in down or shearling, and a small shearling bag on a long strap.
- Dinner: two dresses in velvet or fine knit, opaque tights to match, long leather gloves and earmuffs.
- Night: one sequined or Lurex top, leather trousers, a clutch, and heels if you will change.

Where Courchevel outfits go wrong, and what to keep
Most mistakes here happen at the transitions: walking the village in ski boots, heels on packed snow, a lunch sweater chosen for warmth alone and then worn for two hours in a hot dining room, a sequined dress under a shearling coat, and a large tote on the mountain when a ski-pass pocket is enough.
Spend where the wear is: the ski jacket or suit, a long down coat and lug-sole boots carry most of the week. The sequined top, a logo beanie and a collaboration such as the Moon Boot X Moncler Grenoble Icon are pleasures for this trip.
How we chose
- Ski wear: listings that name a powder skirt, cuffs or gaiters, four-way stretch or a water- and windproof build. The two Balenciaga pieces name none of these, so we say they are for dry days.
- Boots: grip first, then shearling inside or at the collar, on a flat or low heel for packed snow.
- Evening: velvet, fine knits, sequins, Lurex and leather, which read as evening clothes indoors and survive the walk to the table.
- Sizes and spread: more than thirty houses, no more than three pieces from one house in an edit, and pieces down to their last one or two sizes swapped where an equivalent existed.
Frequently asked questions
What should I wear in Courchevel?
Dress by the moment: technical ski wear on the slopes, a sweater that can stand alone at lunch, rubber-soled snow boots for après and the village, a down or shearling coat on the Croisette, velvet or fine knit for dinner, and sequins, Lurex or leather for the clubs.
Is there a dress code in Courchevel?
Not a resort-wide one. None of the official listings we checked, from Courchevel's tourist office or Les 3 Vallées, gives a dress code for a restaurant or club, so each room sets its own; ask when you book. Ski clothes are the norm at lunch on the mountain, and for dinner and the clubs in 1850 we would dress up.
When is the ski season in Courchevel in 2026–27?
Les 3 Vallées lists December 4, 2026, to April 18, 2027, with Moriond and La Tania closing earlier, on April 11. Snow conditions can change the dates.
How cold is Courchevel in winter?
The nearest long-term Météo-France record inside Les 3 Vallées, for Saint-Martin-de-Belleville at 1,443 meters, gives 1991–2020 January averages of about 38°F by day and 21°F at night, with frost almost every night. Much of Courchevel sits higher, so expect colder, especially on the lifts.
What shoes do you need in Courchevel?
Ski boots for the slopes only. For everything else, snow boots or lug-sole ankle boots with a shearling lining, plus heels to change into at dinner if the room calls for them.
