What to Wear in Palm Beach: Worth Avenue, The Breakers, Polo Sundays and the Balls

What to Wear in Palm Beach: Worth Avenue, The Breakers, Polo Sundays and the Balls

What to wear in Palm Beach between Thanksgiving and April: color and print by day, in cotton poplin, silk twill and linen dresses; flats or a heel of about two inches for Worth Avenue; a tweed or bouclé jacket for evenings that average 58°F in January; and a dress, a skirt or tailored trousers after 5 p.m., when The Breakers asks its guests for "resort chic" and discourages shorts, hats and flip-flops. Its HMF bar asks for "cocktail chic". The charity balls want gowns, and The Breakers wants a cover-up and footwear on anyone walking away from its beach and pools.

Below: the weather, the dress codes The Breakers publishes, what to do about private clubs, and outfits for every part of the season, men included. The seventy-two pieces come from Oscar de la Renta, Carolina Herrera, Pucci, Emilia Wickstead and thirty-one other houses.

What to wear in Palm Beach in winter: the season and the weather

No one publishes official dates for the social season. The Town of Palm Beach's construction and landscaping working hours call November 1 to April 30 the "winter season", when building work stops on weekends, town-observed holidays, the days around Thanksgiving and from December 24 through January 1, and stops entirely in the Worth Avenue zoning district. The Breakers asks for full pre-payment on stays around Thanksgiving (November 25 to 27, 2026), from Christmas to January 2, and over Presidents' Day weekend (February 12 to 14, 2027). Across all Vêtir users, typed requests to our AI stylist that we group under Florida (Palm Beach, Miami, Boca) came from 20 accounts in the twelve months to September 26, 2026, by an approximate keyword count.

Nights are cooler than most visitors pack for. These are NOAA's 1991–2020 monthly normals for Palm Beach International Airport, rounded; the National Weather Service office in Miami publishes the same normals day by day:

MonthAverage high / lowDays with 0.1 in of rain or moreWhat it changes
November80°F / 66°F5Bare arms by day; a shawl for dinner outdoors.
December77°F / 62°F5Something on your shoulders after sunset.
January75°F / 58°F5The coolest nights: tweed or bouclé, and closed shoes for dinner.
February77°F / 60°F4The driest month by rainfall: lunch outside, polo every Sunday.
March79°F / 63°F4Pool afternoons return; the jacket still earns its place.
April82°F / 68°F5Silk and linen all day; the layer is optional.

From November through March the overnight low sits 14 to 17 degrees below the afternoon high, which is what catches people out on terraces and at the polo, so every outfit below carries a layer.

The Palm Beach dress code: what is published, and what is not

Dress codes in Palm Beach are set venue by venue. In our view the most useful public benchmark is The Breakers' resort dress code, which the hotel, founded by Henry Flagler in 1896 and still owned by his heirs, spells out room by room. Everywhere on the property, "suggestive or explicit attire, cut-offs and men's sleeveless shirts are discouraged", and clothes or accessories "displaying divisive, political or offensive language/imagery should be avoided".

Where at The BreakersWhat the resort asksHow our stylists read it
Around the resort by dayResort casual. Beachwear and athletic styles "are appropriate when utilizing fitness, spa or outdoor amenities"; "cover-ups and footwear are requested when away from the beach and pools"; "a more polished appearance is encouraged" in indoor public areas, restaurants and shops; hats off in indoor dining venues.A day dress, or a skirt or trousers with a knit.
Everywhere after 5 p.m., and the Seafood Bar by dayResort chic: "Dresses, blouses, skirts, slacks, collared shirts, polos and trousers are recommended"; "beachwear, crop tops, athletic styles, shorts, hats and flip-flops are discouraged".A dress with a jacket, or silk with tailored trousers; shoes with a back or a strap.
HMF and Echo"Dress is cocktail chic."A cocktail dress with some shine or color, and your real jewelry.
The Lobby BarBy day, the resort's evening standard: beachwear, athletic styles, distressed denim, crop tops and men's sleeveless shirts are discouraged, "proper footwear should be worn at all times" and robes are not permitted. In the evening, "no hats, shorts or flip-flops. Suit jackets and ties are not required."By day, dress as for lunch; at night, a dress, or trousers and a silk top.
Sunday brunch in The Circle"Sunday Brunch dress is resort wear. Please refrain from wearing torn denim, tank tops, T-shirts or hats."A printed day dress, or a skirt and a cardigan.
Beach Club, Ocean House, The Surf Break"We ask that you wear cover-ups over swimwear along with sandals or shoes"; "Robes are not permitted." At the Beach Club in the evening, "men's collared shirts are recommended. Casual beachwear, athletic styles, hats and flip flops are not permitted."A kaftan, or a sarong tied as a skirt, and sandals with a sole.

We could not find a published dress code for any of Palm Beach's private member clubs, and we will not guess at one. As a guest, ask your host what to wear for that meal and that room. If you cannot ask, our stylists' own default for a meal as someone's guest is a dress, a skirt or tailored trousers rather than shorts or denim; shoes with a back or a strap; nothing distressed or heavily logoed.

What to wear on Worth Avenue: day dresses in color and print

A Worth Avenue morning is a walk in the sun between boutiques and through the vias, the narrow pedestrian lanes and courtyards off the avenue, with lunch in the middle. The answer to both is a day dress, and to our eye the island wears it in color and print far more often than in black: pink, green, lemon, coral and turquoise, florals and big painterly scenes.

Cotton poplin is the fabric we reach for first: in our experience it holds a full skirt away from the body, breathes in the sun and stays looking pressed longer than linen. Silk twill feels lighter on the skin but marks with sunscreen and creases under a bag strap.

  • Oscar de la Renta's landscape-print poplin midi, with palms and pale buildings washed over a sky-blue ground, under Dolce & Gabbana's short-sleeved lemon tweed jacket, with Ferragamo's beige Vally Mary Janes and Gabriela Hearst's green snakeskin Diana bag.
  • Carolina Herrera's green-and-ivory striped halter midi with Ferragamo's seaglass Varina flats and Dior's Blooming bag, a basket shape in off-white canvas trimmed with black leather.
  • A Pucci silk twill shift with Bottega Veneta's pink Intrecciato ballet flats and Loewe's daisy-yellow Amazona.

Shoes for pavements, courtyards and lunch

Courtyard paving is rarely level, so our stylists keep the heel to about 50mm for a shopping day and want a strap at the back or across the instep. By their listings, Manolo Blahnik's silver Patobarnu sandal sits on a 30mm block, his olive suede Srila on a 50mm kitten heel, and Ferragamo's Vally Mary Jane on a 30mm block. Chanel's pink and burgundy Mary Janes stand on a higher block heel, so we keep them for lunch. To our eye, ballet flats in pink or seaglass are what make a white or striped dress look like Palm Beach rather than the city.

Palm Beach style: color, print and the bag that finishes it

The island's palette is pink and green, lemon, coral, turquoise and white. Our stylists' working rules: one print per outfit, with everything else taken from the colors inside it; white or ivory as a rest between two strong colors; and one bright accessory, usually the bag, to finish a plain dress. To our eyes pink with green is the island's classic pairing; yellow wants white or pale blue, coral wants ivory and gold, and black waits for the evening.

In our stylists' experience a top-handle bag suits a seated lunch better than a crossbody: it stands on the banquette and holds its shape. Gabriela Hearst's Small Diana is shaped like an accordion's bellows in Elaphe snakeskin, according to its listing; Bottega Veneta's Andiamo is woven Intrecciato leather in pale lotus pink; Miu Miu's ivory woven leather reads as a basket; and Roger Vivier's Belle Vivier clutch weaves dark green, pink and white leather around its silver buckle. Valentino Garavani's embroidered linen Antibes tote has dark brown leather handles and trim, so our stylists carry it with ivory, green or pink.

Lunch at the clubs and restaurants

In our experience, lunch is where Palm Beach dresses most carefully: seated, in daylight and often outdoors. The Breakers' Henry's Palm Beach, on Royal Poinciana Way, asks for resort wear by day, and its evening dress "leans polished and elegant"; Sunday brunch in The Circle rules out torn denim, tank tops, T-shirts and hats. For a private club, follow your host. Three outfits our stylists choose for a seated lunch:

  • Emilia Wickstead's crimson floral-cloqué Mara midi with Chanel's pale pink Mary Janes and a small Chanel flap bag in red.
  • Oscar de la Renta's hibiscus-print poplin dress with Max Mara's ivory bouclé jacket, Ferragamo's beige Vally Mary Janes and Mikimoto pearl drops.
  • Zimmermann's gold-ground linen midi with TOTEME's pale pink ballet flats and Loewe's yellow Amazona.

On hemlines: a mini is fine on Worth Avenue in daylight, but for a seated lunch as someone's guest we choose a skirt at or below the knee, because a low terrace chair or banquette shortens any hem by a few inches. The Breakers' code discourages men's sleeveless shirts, not sleeveless dresses; bring the jacket for the air-conditioning.

A jacket for 60-degree evenings

January nights at Palm Beach International average 58°F. In our stylists' view a tweed or bouclé jacket does three things a cardigan cannot: it sits square over a strapless or halter dress, it looks finished enough for dinner, and it stays put in an onshore breeze. Short sleeves, as on Valentino Garavani's boxy ivory jacket, Oscar de la Renta's sequined navy one and Dolce & Gabbana's lemon one, suit this climate: arms free, shoulders covered.

Fit, in our stylists' experience: buy the jacket to close over the fullest thing you will wear under it, a poplin bodice rather than a slip. Two here are cotton blends, which suit a warm climate: Dolce & Gabbana's lemon jacket is 55% cotton and 45% polyamide, and Valentino Garavani's lists cotton, nylon, polyamide and viscose. Max Mara's Palmizi, in heavyweight wool bouclé according to its listing, is the one for the coolest January nights.

Polo in Wellington: Sunday afternoons, December to May

The National Polo Center in Wellington, which the United States Polo Association owns, opens its 2027 season on Sunday, December 27, 2026. Its 2027 ticket page lists a 3 p.m. match every Sunday from then until May 2, 2027, with the C.V. Whitney Cup final on February 21, the USPA Gold Cup final on March 21 and the U.S. Open Polo Championship final on April 18. The same page says tickets go on sale November 18 and takes inquiries for stadium, tailgate, box-seat and brunch tickets.

That page lists seats and brunch but no dress code. Our stylists' reading: a box or the brunch calls for what you would wear to a seated lunch; the stadium and tailgates are more relaxed. Our guide to what to wear to a polo match covers shoes for the divot stomp and hats. For Wellington in winter we add the jacket: by the time a 3 p.m. match ends, a January afternoon is cooling toward that 58°F average low.

  • For a box: the Carolina Herrera striped halter from the Worth Avenue edit, now under Etro's navy tweed jacket with its metallic braid, with the same seaglass Varina flats and Roger Vivier's green-and-pink woven clutch.
  • For the stadium: Oscar de la Renta's blush floral poplin midi with Bottega Veneta's pink ballet flats, a wide straw brim and Bottega Veneta's lotus-pink Andiamo, whose crossbody strap leaves both hands free for the divot stomp.

Dinner after 5 p.m., and cocktails at HMF

After 5 p.m. The Breakers asks for more across the whole resort. At HMF, named for Henry Morrison Flagler and set in what was the hotel's Florentine Room, the code is simply "cocktail chic", and Echo, The Breakers' Asian restaurant a few minutes from the hotel, uses the same words. Our stylists read that as a dress with color, shine or embellishment at any length from the knee to the floor, or silk separates; heels or dressy flats; and the jewelry you left in the safe at lunch.

  • Valentino Garavani's coral-pink Crepe Couture mini, embellished at the neck, with Manolo Blahnik's silver Patobarnu slingbacks and Roger Vivier's woven clutch.
  • Oscar de la Renta's gold hibiscus guipure dress with BVLGARI's Tubogas hoops and nothing at the neck.
  • Missoni's sequined crochet-knit mini, its stripes gathered over one shoulder, with silver sandals and a metallic clutch.

Read the fabrics before you pack: per their listings, Versace's silver Medusa dress is viscose jersey and Carolina Herrera's fuchsia bow dress polyester crepe, and in our experience both come out of a suitcase without creasing; McQueen's ice-blue silk lace wants its own garment bag.

What to wear to a Palm Beach gala

For the season's charity balls, the invitation decides the length: black tie means a floor-length gown or a very formal cocktail dress, white tie a full-length gown, and "black tie optional" leaves room for a dressy cocktail length. Our guide to black-tie dressing decodes the rest. Across all Vêtir users, typed requests to our AI stylist about formal events, black tie and galas ran highest in November and December 2025, with a second peak in July 2026.

The cocktail hour may be outdoors: The Breakers holds its holiday dinners in the Ponce de Leon Ballroom, which its venue guide puts at 15,000 square feet, and the same guide pitches the Ocean Lawn beside it for alfresco cocktails. In our stylists' experience a gown in cloqué, faille, jersey or a heavier silk behaves in a sea breeze, chiffon blows about, and a block heel copes with grass where a stiletto sinks. To our eye the island dresses for evening in pink, coral, jewel greens and prints as readily as in black.

  • Oscar de la Renta's rose-pink silk georgette gown with a beaded floral cape, which detaches according to the listing, with Mikimoto's pearl drops and no necklace.
  • Carolina Herrera's silk halter gown, a lilac bodice over a deep blue skirt, with Pomellato's malachite earrings and a metallic clutch.
  • Where black tie is optional: Oscar de la Renta's one-shoulder jersey gown, printed with the same palms and villas as the day dress, with BVLGARI's gold hoops, since a one-shoulder neckline leaves no room for a pendant.

Jewelry: pearls, gold, malachite and a palm tree

In our stylists' experience Palm Beach wears its jewelry by day as well as at night: pearls and gold at lunch, more diamonds after dark. Mikimoto, whose founder, Kokichi Mikimoto, created the first cultured pearl in 1893 according to the listing for its earrings, makes the pearl drops and the three-strand choker here. Anita Ko's diamond palm tree and palm leaf pendants put the island's motif on a chain, and BVLGARI's Divas' Dream and Pomellato's Pom Pom Dot earrings bring mother-of-pearl and malachite, white and green, to a pink dress. Our guide to wearing pearls covers lengths and layering.

Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Eve in Palm Beach

The Breakers' 2026 holiday program runs from Thanksgiving, Thursday, November 26, with a three-course menu at Flagler Steakhouse (the Ponce de Leon Ballroom buffet was listed as fully committed, with a waitlist, by mid-October), through a Christmas Day brunch in The Circle, where "a harpist passes from table to table", to HMF's New Year's Eve celebration from 8:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m., with live entertainment, dancing, a midnight Champagne toast and a balloon drop.

  • Thanksgiving: Oscar de la Renta's blush floral poplin midi under Valentino Garavani's ivory short-sleeved tweed jacket, with Ferragamo's beige Vally Mary Janes.
  • Christmas brunch: Carolina Herrera's ivory puff-sleeved dress printed with red calla lilies, with Chanel's red mini flap bag and pearl drops.
  • New Year's Eve at HMF: the coral Valentino Garavani mini or the Missoni, silver Patobarnu slingbacks, and the ivory Valentino Garavani jacket for the walk out at half past midnight. Our New Year's Eve outfit guide has more.

The beach and the pool

At The Breakers the pools and the beach are for hotel guests and club members only, and the rules follow you off the sand: a cover-up and footwear once you leave the beach and pools, robes only in your room or at the spa, and at the beachfront restaurants a cover-up over the swimsuit with sandals or shoes. So your cover-up has to work as lunch clothing: a kaftan, or a sarong tied as a midi skirt over a one-piece.

A printed one-piece swimsuit reads as clothing under a sarong, which is why we lean on Pucci; in our experience a halter or a tie back, as on Pucci's Vivara and Dolce & Gabbana's St. Sicilia, stays put when you swim. Read the cover-ups' labels: Dolce & Gabbana's palm-printed kaftan is silk, Pucci's Orchidee sarong cotton, Missoni's zigzag dress viscose lamé and Carolina Herrera's embroidered kaftan polyester, per their listings. Our St. Barths packing guide and resort wear guide go further.

What men wear in Palm Beach

The Breakers spells out its rules for men: sleeveless shirts discouraged everywhere; collared shirts recommended at the Beach Club in the evening; no hats, shorts or flip-flops at the Lobby Bar at night, where "suit jackets and ties are not required". The uniform that follows, in our stylists' hands: a navy blazer, a pink or white linen shirt or polo, white linen trousers and suede loafers in navy or pink, with a navy or white belt if the trousers have loops.

  • Valentino Garavani's navy cotton twill blazer with its piped shawl collar, Thom Browne's blush linen button-down, Canali's white linen drawstring trousers and Tod's navy Gommino loafers.
  • Canali's navy wool Kei blazer, which its listing calls wrinkle-resistant, over Zegna's pink linen polo and white pleated linen trousers, with Christian Louboutin's pink suede Plato loafers for a man who likes his color at the ankle.

Buy once, enjoy for a season, and the mistakes we see

Buy once: a short-sleeved tweed or bouclé jacket, which works as well in New York in May; a poplin day dress in a print you will still love in five years; a top-handle bag in a color; and pearl drops. Enjoy for a season: the landscape print, the sequined mini and the palm-print silk kaftan.

The usual mistakes: packing for the tropics and shivering at an outdoor dinner in January; stilettos on courtyard paving and the polo lawn; treating a cover-up as a dress in a hotel restaurant; jeans to a club lunch before you have asked your host; and black head to toe by day, which on Worth Avenue reads as a visitor from the city.

Fit and care: the size scales differ even within this edit. Oscar de la Renta and Carolina Herrera list US sizes, Emilia Wickstead's day dress is listed in UK sizes, Balmain's jacket in French and Etro's in Italian, so read each house's chart. Hang poplin and cloqué in a steamy bathroom on arrival rather than ironing them, and keep tweed on a shaped hanger so the shoulders hold. If your closet already holds half of this, ask our AI stylist to plan each day of the trip around what you own and suggest only what is missing.

How we chose

  • The published codes first: every evening piece meets The Breakers' after-5 standard, so nothing in the dinner edits is a short, a crop top or a flip-flop.
  • Heels for paving and grass: the day shoes are flats, kitten heels or block heels, with heights from the listings where given; the one higher Chanel heel is for lunch.
  • Sun and breeze: day dresses in cotton poplin, linen and silk twill; short-sleeved or cotton-blend jackets for nights in the high 50s and low 60s; gowns in fabrics that keep their shape in wind.
  • Sizes: we passed over pieces left in only one or two sizes.
  • Range: thirty-five houses; day dresses from about $1,600 to $6,000, gowns from under $2,000 to about $6,300.

Frequently asked questions

What is the dress code in Palm Beach?

Dress codes are set by each venue. The Breakers publishes a detailed one: resort casual by day, with cover-ups and footwear away from the pools; dresses, skirts, slacks, collared shirts and trousers after 5 p.m., when shorts, hats and flip-flops are discouraged; and a cocktail code at HMF and Echo. We could not find any private club's code in print, so ask your host.

What should I wear in Palm Beach in January?

Cotton and linen dresses or skirts for days around 75°F, and a jacket or shawl every evening, since the average low is 58°F. Pack closed shoes for dinner and a layer for the polo.

Can you wear shorts in Palm Beach?

At The Breakers, yes, by day: its code discourages cut-offs at any hour, and shorts only after 5 p.m., the Lobby Bar included. Around town by day, tailored shorts are fine in our stylists' view. As a guest at a private club, ask your host; until you know, choose a skirt, a dress or trousers.

What do you wear to polo in Wellington?

A day dress or linen trousers, flats or wedges for the grass, a hat, and a jacket for the late afternoon. In our stylists' view a box seat or the brunch calls for what you would wear to a seated lunch. The National Polo Center's 2027 season has a 3 p.m. match every Sunday from December 27, 2026, to May 2, 2027.

When is the Palm Beach season?

No one publishes official dates. The Town of Palm Beach's construction rules call November 1 to April 30 the winter season, The Breakers asks for full pre-payment over Thanksgiving, Christmas to New Year and Presidents' Day weekend, and Sunday polo in Wellington runs from late December to early May.
