What to Wear to Art Basel Miami Beach: Fair Days, Gallery Dinners and Beach Nights

What to wear to Art Basel Miami Beach comes down to two things: polished, breathable clothes you can stand in all afternoon, and flat shoes with real soles. The fair's public days run December 4 to 6, 2026 at the Miami Beach Convention Center, the anchor of Miami Art Week (November 30 to December 6), and early-December normals on Miami Beach are about 77°F by day and 66°F at night. For the fair, that means a crisp cotton or silk shirt with fluid trousers, or a sleeveless shirt dress; loafers, low sneakers or ballet flats; a crossbody bag; sunglasses; and a light layer for the air-conditioning.

After dark, switch to a silk slip dress or a column with a flat sandal or a low heel. Below, we cover fair days, the vernissage and gallery dinners, beach-side events and late parties, and finish with a packing list for the week.

Is there an Art Basel dress code?

No. Art Basel publishes no dress code. Its rules for visitors cover security checks, bags, prohibited items and conduct, and they touch on clothing in one place only: face coverings are not permitted, with exceptions for health, religion or disability. Any dress code for the week's dinners and parties will be on the invitation. The unwritten code at the fair is easier to read once you remember what the fair is: a marketplace where dealers, advisers and collectors are at work. Dress as you would for a day of meetings in a warm city, with good fabric, a clean line, one piece with a point of view, and nothing you have to manage. Head-to-toe logos and trend pieces tend to look like costume next to the art; a perfect white shirt never does.

The rest of Miami Art Week is looser. According to Miami's visitor bureau, the week spreads across satellite fairs, museum and gallery shows and parties from South Beach to Wynwood and Downtown, and Design Miami runs December 1 to 6 in Miami Beach. Expect to change once a day: fair clothes until early evening, dinner or party clothes after.

Miami weather in early December

The National Weather Service's 1991–2020 daily normals for Miami Beach put the highs for December 1 to 6 at about 77°F and the lows at 66 to 67°F, and the daily rainfall normal is well under a tenth of an inch. In practice that is a warm, mostly dry afternoon and a mild evening. The complication is indoors: convention halls, galleries and restaurants are air-conditioned, so the gap between the sidewalk and the aisle can be wide.

Dress in breathable natural fibers (cotton poplin, linen, silk crêpe de chine, silk twill, lightweight tropical wool) and carry one light layer you are happy to wear indoors: a linen blazer, a cashmere cardigan, or a second shirt worn open. Leave the heavy coat at home; you are unlikely to need it. Bring a water bottle, too: Art Basel's visitor rules allow bottles of up to 33 ounces (1 liter), and the Convention Center has refill stations.

What to wear to Art Basel Miami Beach on a fair day

Plan the outfit for the whole visit. Day tickets are sold with an entry time slot, the earliest at 12 p.m., and Art Basel's ticket FAQ says day tickets are "valid for single entry only" and that re-entry is not permitted once you exit. The Weekend Ticket and the premium passes are the ones listed as valid for re-entry, and the premium passes also get you in from 11 a.m. Each ticket names the Convention Center entrance you are to use, so check it before you set out. Whatever you put on at lunchtime has to work in the outdoor line, in the aisles and in the air-conditioned halls.

A crisp shirt is the most useful fair piece. Poplin or silk twill looks sharp, breathes in the heat and buttons to the wrist when the air-conditioning bites. The Row's longline poplin shirts, Loewe's gingham silk twill and Gabriela Hearst's puff-sleeved linen shirt are three versions we like. Wear the shirt with trousers that skim rather than cling: pleated linen from TOTEME, or Loewe's fluid navy silk wide-legs. If you prefer a dress, choose a sleeveless shirt or trench dress in a linen blend, like Carolina Herrera's, with enough structure at the shoulder to look finished without a jacket. Our guide to styling a white button-down shirt has more ways to wear one.

Keep the palette quiet (white, navy, stripes, gingham, sand) and let the art be the loudest thing in the booth. If you want one statement, make it a shoe or a bag.

  • The white shirt: a longline white poplin shirt worn loose over navy silk wide-leg trousers, with suede loafers and a crossbody bag.
  • Gingham and linen: a navy gingham silk shirt, pleated sand linen trousers, brown suede sneakers and round sunglasses.
  • One and done: a sleeveless linen-blend trench dress, navy mesh ballet flats and a small patent crossbody.

Shoes for a day on convention-center floors

A convention-center floor is hard and unforgiving, and a full fair day adds up to hours on your feet. Choose a flat or near-flat shoe with a real sole: a suede loafer on a rubber sole, a low sneaker, or a ballet flat with some structure. Wear them in before you fly; new shoes and a long fair day are a bad combination. Save thin-strapped sandals for the beach, where you will not be walking the length of a hall in them.

A good sneaker is entirely at home at the fair. A slim suede pair from Dries Van Noten or a TOTEME runner looks deliberate with tailored trousers, and our guide to the best designer sneakers goes further. Loewe's and Tod's suede loafers suit a shirt dress, and Alaïa's mesh ballet flats bring a little evening to a day look, which helps if you are going straight from the fair to dinner.

  • Sneakers with tailoring: brown suede sneakers, cream linen trousers and a white shirt.
  • Navy on navy: navy mesh flats with a navy gingham shirt and navy silk trousers.

Bags and sunglasses: hands free, small, secure

Keep both hands free for a coffee, a catalog or a handshake. The fair's rules make the choice for you: one bag per person, anything larger than 16 by 8 by 16 inches goes to the Coat & Bag Check, and backpacks of any size are not allowed, nor are large umbrellas. A crossbody bag with a zip or a flap closure is the right tool for crowded aisles: big enough for a phone with your ticket, a card, sunglasses and sunscreen, small enough not to swing into a sculpture. Bottega Veneta's soft Intrecciato suede crossbody, Prada's leather camera bag and TOTEME's patent T-Lock bag all fit the brief; for more, see our guide to the best designer crossbody bags.

For sunglasses, an oval or round frame in black or tortoiseshell suits almost every face and every outfit on this list. One piece of fair etiquette: take them off when you step into a booth to talk to a dealer.

What to wear to the vernissage, gallery dinners and parties

The dressiest hours inside the fair come at the vernissage on Thursday, December 3, from 4 p.m., which Art Basel includes with its premium passes. Treat it as early evening: the fair outfit with sharper shoes and jewelry, or a silk dress with a flat.

Gallery and collector dinners are where most people change. With evening lows in the mid-60s, you do not need a coat, but by the end of the night you will want sleeves, or a shirt over your shoulders. The silk slip dress is our Miami evening uniform: it is cool in the heat, packs flat, and takes a crisp shirt or a jacket over it. Khaite's silk organza slips and The Row's lace-trimmed silk slip are the ones we would pack; our edit of slip dresses has more. A draped satin or jersey column does the same job with more coverage.

Before you choose the party shoe, find out where the party is. A sand beach, a hotel rooftop and a warehouse floor call for different things, and a flat sandal or a low block heel covers most of them. Carry a small shoulder bag you can keep on while you dance; Rabanne's metal-disc bag and Alaïa's studded heart both qualify. If the invitation names a dress code, follow it; our guide to dressing for a cocktail party covers the most common one.

  • Slip and shirt: a black lace-trimmed silk slip dress, a white poplin shirt worn open over it and flat metallic sandals.
  • Color after dark: a violet-blue silk organza slip, crystal mesh flats and a studded heart bag.
  • Column for a rooftop: a raspberry satin maxi, gold flat sandals and a metal-disc bag.

What to wear to beach-side dinners and pool parties

Beach-side events are the one time a heel is a liability rather than a choice: sand, boardwalks and wet pool decks all punish a stiletto. Wear a flat sandal with an ankle strap or a thong you can walk in, and a dress or kaftan that looks intentional at a hotel dinner and still behaves in a sea breeze. A silk kaftan is our pick for these nights: it looks dressed at the table and stays cool at 77°F. Pucci's printed silk crêpe de chine is the classic, Alaïa's sheer linen and silk is the quieter option, and Fendi's short silk kaftan dress with kimono sleeves is the one for a pool party.

A raffia bag reads as beach rather than afterthought, and it is light enough to carry all evening. If an invitation says resort or beach chic, take it literally: linen, silk, flat sandals and a light shawl for later. Our resort wear guide goes deeper on the category.

  • Print at the table: a printed silk kaftan, gold flat thong sandals and a raffia basket bag.
  • Pool to dinner: a sheer linen-and-silk kaftan over a black swimsuit by the pool, then over a slip dress for dinner, with tan strappy flats.

Satellite fairs and gallery walks

Miami's visitor bureau counts more than 20 contemporary art fairs during the week, many of them away from the Convention Center, and a gallery walk in Wynwood or the Design District means far more time outdoors than a day at the main fair. Plan for sun and pavement: a shirt with sleeves you can roll, trousers or a skirt with enough weight that it does not blow around, sneakers or loafers, and sunglasses you keep on until you are inside. Add a hat only if you will actually wear it; a wide straw brim in a crowded booth becomes one more thing to carry.

  • Gallery walk: a striped poplin shirt, pleated linen trousers, suede sneakers and a woven raffia shoulder bag.
  • Fair hopping by car: a sleeveless trench dress, suede loafers and tortoiseshell sunglasses, with a cardigan in the bag for the air-conditioning.

A packing list for Miami Art Week

The hardest-working Miami Art Week outfit is the shirt and trouser pair, so build the rest of the suitcase around it. For a week that runs from November 30 to December 6, this list covers five fair or gallery days and three evenings, with everything worn at least twice:

  • Shirts: three (white poplin, gingham or striped silk, linen).
  • Bottoms: two pairs of trousers (pleated linen, fluid silk).
  • Day dress: one sleeveless shirt or trench dress.
  • Evening: two dresses (a silk slip, a satin or jersey column) and one kaftan for the beach.
  • Layer: a linen blazer or a fine cashmere cardigan for the air-conditioning.
  • Shoes: suede sneakers, loafers or mesh flats, and flat sandals.
  • Bags: a crossbody by day, a small party bag at night, raffia for the beach; no backpack, since the fair does not allow one.
  • Extras: sunglasses, sunscreen, a refillable water bottle and a silk scarf that works as a shawl.

If your wardrobe is already digitized with Vêtir, our AI stylist can turn this list into outfits from your own closet, day by day. Our guide to dressing for travel covers the flight.

How we chose

Our Art Basel picks come only from top luxury houses; each was live on Vêtir, in stock and at full price at the time we chose it, and most had a good spread of sizes. For fair days we favored natural, breathable fibers and cuts that look finished without a jacket; for shoes, flat or near-flat soles you can stand in for hours; for bags, crossbody straps and closures that suit a crowd and the fair's one-bag rule. Evening picks are silks and satins that pack flat and suit mild nights. Prices run from about $380 for sunglasses to about $3,450 for a silk kaftan dress, and we checked every product image for color and silhouette.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a dress code for Art Basel Miami Beach?

No. The fair publishes no dress code; its visitor rules cover tickets, bags and conduct, and on clothing say only that face coverings are not permitted, with exceptions for health, religion or disability. We dress as for a day of meetings in a warm city: a good shirt, fluid trousers or a shirt dress, and flat shoes. Dinners and parties print any dress code on the invitation.

What shoes should I wear to Art Basel?

Flat or near-flat shoes with a real sole that you have already worn in: suede sneakers, rubber-soled loafers or structured ballet flats. Save thin-strapped sandals and stilettos for the evening.

What is the weather like in Miami during Art Basel?

Mild and mostly dry. National Weather Service normals for Miami Beach put early-December highs at about 77°F and lows at 66 to 67°F. Indoor spaces are air-conditioned, so carry a light layer; a linen blazer, a cashmere cardigan or a shirt worn open covers it.

Can I leave Art Basel Miami Beach and come back the same day?

Not on a day ticket. Art Basel's ticket FAQ says day tickets are valid for single entry only and that re-entry is not permitted once you exit. The Weekend Ticket and the premium passes are listed as valid for re-entry.

Can I bring a backpack to Art Basel?

No. Art Basel's visitor rules do not allow backpacks, suitcases or trolleys of any size, allow one bag per person, and send bags larger than 16 by 8 by 16 inches to the Coat & Bag Check. A crossbody bag is the easiest answer.

What do people wear to Art Basel parties?

Silk slip dresses, columns and short party dresses are the safest bets, with flat sandals or low heels, because venues range from sand beaches to rooftops. Follow the invitation if it names a dress code.
