The Best Turtlenecks for Women, and How to Choose the Neck, Knit and Fit

The best turtlenecks for women are the ones knitted for the job you give them. Start with a fine cashmere or merino turtleneck in black, ivory, gray, navy or camel, close enough through the shoulders to sit under a blazer and long enough to tuck. Add a chunky ribbed or cable turtleneck to wear on its own under a coat, and a mock neck if a full fold feels tight at the throat. After that come the specialists: a sheer jersey or silk turtleneck for layering under dresses, a turtleneck dress, and one with real shine for the December parties.
Below: how to choose the neck height, the knit and the fit, and what a high collar does for your face. Then nine edits, 72 pieces from more than 30 houses, with outfit formulas, care, and the mistakes our stylists correct most often.
How to choose the best turtlenecks for women: neck, knit and fit
The collar matters most, because it sits against your jaw all day, and product names describe it badly: Khaite's listing for its Vivienne top says "Mockneck styling," yet the photograph shows a collar tall enough to fold over. Judge it from the photograph, then choose one of these four.
| Neck | What it is | Best for | Think twice if |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full turtleneck | A tall ribbed tube folded once, so the edge sits close to the jaw | Longer necks, hair worn up, collarless coats, an open-necked blazer | Your neck is short, or you want a necklace on show |
| Funnel neck | A wide collar that rises straight up without folding and stands away from the throat | Anyone who dislikes knit touching the neck; boxy sweaters worn as the top layer | Your coat has a tall collar of its own; the two compete |
| Mock neck | A single layer about half the height, never folded | Short necks, heated offices, a chain worn over the knit | You want the knit to stand in for a scarf outdoors |
| High neck in silk or jersey | A woven or jersey band that stands on its own, usually closed at the back | Evening tops, and blouses under tailoring | Warmth is the point; it is a dress collar, not insulation |
What a turtleneck does for your face and neckline
A turtleneck works like the mat around a framed picture: it stops everything at the jaw, so the color of the knit sits right against your skin. In our stylists' experience, ivory and cream lift a tired complexion, camel and oatmeal soften it, and black reads graphic and severe, which is exactly right at night and can look flat under office lighting unless an earring or a lip color brings warmth back.
Proportion is the other half. A tall fold and a thick rib add width at the throat and chest, which suits a long neck and narrow shoulders and can crowd a short neck or a full bust. For those, our stylists' rule is a mock neck or a fine, close turtleneck, then something that cuts a V below it: an open blazer, a V-neck cardigan worn over the top, or a long pendant. Hair matters too. Worn up, it shows the clean line of the collar; worn long and loose over a tall fold, it catches and tangles, so a mock neck is easier. With a full turtleneck, let earrings do the work. A collar-length chain sits well over a mock neck, and a pendant lies flat on a fine knit but twists on a cable.
How a turtleneck should fit under a blazer or coat
Check the shoulder seam before anything else. On a dropped-shoulder sweater the seam falls partway down the upper arm, and under a jacket with set-in sleeves that spare fabric bunches at the armhole. Under tailoring, choose a set-in or close raglan shoulder. Save dropped shoulders and oversized bodies for cape coats, cocoon coats and weekends.
Then do the sleeve test. Put the jacket on over the turtleneck and reach forward as if for a door handle. If the knit sleeve rides up and gathers at the elbow, you need a finer knit, a short sleeve or no sleeve at all. For length, a fine knit tucks into high-waisted trousers without a ridge; anything heavier should hang out to the hip bone, or be replaced by a bodysuit, which never comes untucked.
Coat collars decide what goes underneath. Funnel-neck coats and jackets are still on the fall 2026 runways: Coveteur's fall 2026 outerwear report pointed to a bright red one at Balenciaga and a fur-and-wool funnel-neck jacket at Altuzarra. Under a funnel-neck coat, wear a mock neck or a fine turtleneck folded low, because two tall collars stacked up look like a neck brace. A coat with notch or shawl lapels leaves room for a chunky roll; our guide to this season's coat trends has the shapes. On sizing, read the fit notes on each listing: Gabriela Hearst's says its Paget top fits true to size, while Saint Laurent's calls its orange cashmere-silk turtleneck a relaxed fit, so expect more room through the body.
Cashmere turtlenecks for women: the one to buy first
If you buy a single turtleneck this winter, make it cashmere in a neutral, slim enough for a jacket over it and long enough to tuck. Choose by shape. Jil Sander's camel turtleneck is the slim one for tailoring, close through the shoulder, in cashmere with virgin wool and silk, according to the listing. Gabriela Hearst's black Paget is cashmere jersey, 70 percent cashmere and 30 percent silk, draped close to the body. ALAÏA's gray turtleneck, a cashmere and wool blend, has short sleeves, so nothing bunches inside a jacket sleeve. Tom Ford's dark gray melange is 64 percent cashmere and 36 percent cotton, by its listing, with a diagonal seam across the front that rises into a draped collar.
The relaxed ones are sweaters to wear alone. Brunello Cucinelli's dark gray is plain-stitch cashmere with dropped shoulders, so it belongs under a coat rather than a blazer. Max Mara's beige cashmere has raglan sleeves and gold buttons along the left shoulder. Loro Piana's ribbed turtleneck is an oatmeal mélange with dropped shoulders, and Saint Laurent's orange cashmere-silk is light enough to layer. For the fitting-room checks that separate good cashmere from poor, see our guide to the best cashmere sweaters.

Fine wool and silk-blend turtlenecks to wear under a blazer
A turtleneck replaces a shirt under a jacket only when it is thin enough to vanish under the lapels. Givenchy's gray turtleneck is 70 percent wool and 30 percent silk, with thumbholes at the cuffs that stop the sleeves riding up inside a jacket. Carolina Herrera's black is mostly wool and silk, with a little nylon and polyurethane, by its listing. Khaite's Vivienne is a lightweight jersey of equal parts wool and silk, and its Vinci, camel in the photograph, is a fine wool-and-silk rib with a stand collar, cut long with side slits to wear over trousers rather than tucked in.
Two pieces solve the sleeve problem from the other direction. Khaite's mustard Karla, mostly virgin wool by its listing, is sleeveless, so nothing doubles up inside the jacket sleeve, and Oscar de la Renta's oat wool turtleneck, made in Italy, has short sleeves. Brunello Cucinelli's pearl-gray rib zips at the neck, which helps in a heated office. ALAÏA's ribbed wool bodysuit, taupe in the photograph, keeps a smooth line under high-waisted trousers all day. Our winter work outfits take these through the week, and our blazer edit has the jackets.
- Black fine turtleneck under a black single-breasted blazer and black wide-leg trousers, with gold hoops: the evening-proof uniform.
- Gray turtleneck under a camel blazer, with cream wide-leg trousers and brown suede loafers.
- Camel rib worn loose over ivory wool trousers, under a chocolate double-breasted blazer.

Chunky, ribbed and cable turtlenecks
A chunky turtleneck is the outfit, not a layer: wear it under a coat with room in the sleeve, never under tailoring. TOTEME's red is knitted from doubled wool yarn with a touch of cashmere and brushed, according to the listing, with low armholes and a trapeze body. Tom Ford's black blends wool, cashmere and mohair under what the listing calls a generous funnel. Brunello Cucinelli's black is an English-rib cashmere, Zimmermann's ivory Valiant is a honeycomb cable in wool with balloon sleeves and a knotted waist, and Missoni's runs a fine, irregular stripe through cashmere and wool.
Three are for the holidays and long weekends. Magda Butrym's is a patchwork of snowflake Fair Isle squares, 70 percent wool and 30 percent cashmere, with an ivory collar and hem. Brunello Cucinelli's cropped beige turtleneck, lambswool and cashmere, has burgundy stripes. Magda Butrym's charcoal turtleneck, pure wool by its listing, gathers into a draped hem at one side.
- Red brushed turtleneck, mid-blue straight jeans, black ankle boots.
- Ivory cable turtleneck, a chocolate suede midi skirt and chocolate knee boots.
- Cropped striped turtleneck with high-waisted gray flannel trousers and burgundy loafers.

Mock neck tops and sweaters for women
The mock neck stands about half as high as a full turtleneck and is never folded, so it does not press on the throat. Choose it for a short neck, a warm office, or a chain worn over the knit. Saint Laurent's olive mock neck is silk rib with a small gold YSL at the neck, and fits close. Victoria Beckham's gray merino runs its ribs on the diagonal to a pointed hem, and Versace's red is a semi-sheer fine rib of virgin wool and nylon with a Medusa stud at the back. Max Mara's Fragola, light blue wool and cashmere, is the relaxed one.
The rest show how far the shape stretches. Chloé's navy crop is knitted with tulips. Brunello Cucinelli's ivory cashmere mock neck comes with ties that knot into a bow or hang loose like a scarf. Jil Sander's navy top is boiled wool with short cap sleeves, and its white cotton mock-neck T-shirt, elbow length, is the everyday base under everything.
- Olive silk mock neck, ecru jeans, chocolate loafers, a cream coat.
- Red mock neck, a black blazer and black trousers, a short gold chain worn over the knit.
- Light blue mock neck with gray pleated trousers and white leather sneakers.

Funnel necks and statement turtlenecks
These have a shape of their own: the season's pleasures rather than its foundations. TOTEME's black funnel neck rises from a boxy, mid-weight wool body, and its heather-gray turtleneck fits close at the top, then flares to a swinging hem. Zimmermann's charcoal merino Valiant has buttoned cape sleeves. Jacquemus knots the short sleeve of its beige wool-and-cashmere Fiocco and buttons it at the back of the neck. Balmain's black rib is fluffy, with padded shoulders, and Max Mara's Adorno is a cropped mohair-blend rib with a teardrop cutout across the back.
Rabanne's cream turtleneck is intarsia-knitted with trailing florals over a close fit, by its listing, and Alexander McQueen's dark brown wool rib ends in textured cuffs that its listing calls feather-inspired. Two practical notes from our stylists: one statement piece per outfit, and cape or balloon sleeves will not go into a coat sleeve, so plan to wear a cape, or a coat over the shoulders.

Second-skin turtlenecks: jersey, silk, lace and the bodysuit
The thinnest turtlenecks are layering tools: under a slip dress, a sleeveless or V-neck dress, a pinafore, or an open shirt. Coveteur's fall 2026 knitwear report listed sheer and cut-out knits among the season's directions, including a Schiaparelli turtleneck with mesh panels. Saint Laurent's chocolate turtleneck is a semi-sheer jersey of cupro and elastane with a gathered neck. Jil Sander's black is a semi-sheer silk jersey with ribbed knit sleeves, by its listing, and Zimmermann's ivory corded-lace bodysuit is lined with jersey through the bodice.
In silk, The Row's Miles is draped and relaxed, chocolate in the photograph, and Valentino Garavani's ivory mock neck is fluid crepe with short sleeves and a keyhole at the back. Not all of these are natural fibers, and we name them: besides the Saint Laurent's cupro, TOTEME's embroidered black tulle is polyester and Loewe's purple jersey is mostly viscose. PUCCI's printed tulle has lettuce edges and a print that, the listing says, varies from piece to piece.
Contrast under a dress works only when it looks deliberate. A chocolate jersey turtleneck under an ivory slip, or ivory lace under a gray wool pinafore, reads as a choice; a near-match in a slightly different shade looks like a mistake. For more ways with a slip in the cold, see our guide to wearing a slip dress in winter, and browse bodysuits for the smoothest base layer.

The turtleneck dress
A turtleneck dress covers you from jaw to knee or ankle, so it needs shape somewhere: a cinched waist, a fluted hem or a clean column. ALAÏA's mint sculpting dress is pure wool and sleeveless, with rib lines that sweep across the body into an asymmetric hem, and its silk-blend mini, dark aubergine in the photograph, has architectural cap sleeves. Gucci's black dress is a fine wool rib with a leather-trimmed Horsebit, by its listing. Givenchy's black sleeveless mini is a pleated cotton knit with sheer bands at the waist. Gabriela Hearst's bordeaux Atira is a rib in 100 percent silk, which its listing describes as fitted at the bust and waist and loose at the hip.
Versace's mini is a micro cable in wool, fuchsia and red above and violet below, with bat sleeves and Medusa hardware on an open back. Valentino Garavani's black silk georgette maxi has a draped mock neck, structured shoulders and sheer sleeves, and Stella McCartney's star-print midi is polyamide mesh. A turtleneck dress has no waistband to fight after a long meal, which makes it the Thanksgiving dress for Thursday, November 26. For knit dresses of every neckline, see our guide to the best knit dresses and the knit dress edit.

Evening turtlenecks: lamé, sequins, lace and satin
An evening turtleneck covers more than a party top and still catches the light, for dinners from Thanksgiving through Hanukkah to New Year's Eve. ALAÏA's bronze bodysuit is 91 percent silk with snap fastenings. Valentino's blush high-neck bodysuit is Lurex lace. Lurex is a brand, not a fiber: the Lurex Company describes it as a brand of metallic and special-effect yarns, created in 1946, and this lace is mostly polyamide and viscose, with metallic fiber at 9 percent, by its listing.
Valentino's pink top is pleated silk cady that rises to a high neck over padded shoulders. Gabriela Hearst's black Waite is an open knit of silk and virgin wool, sheer by design, with button loops at the neck. Brunello Cucinelli's beige rib carries subtle sequins, and its brown sleeveless mock neck is a lamé knit of cashmere, viscose and polyester. Rabanne's copper stretch satin has a pleated turtleneck and cuffs, and Stella McCartney's silver-gray rib, shot with metallic fiber, is the one for an office party. For a black-tie invitation, a turtleneck top with trousers rarely reads formal enough; Valentino Garavani's floor-length georgette in the dress edit is the turtleneck that does. More party pieces of every neckline are in our guide to the best party tops.
- Bronze silk bodysuit with an ivory satin bias-cut midi skirt and gold sandals.

- Beige sequined turtleneck, a black satin slip skirt and black pointed pumps; the listing itself suggests the slip skirt and pointed pumps.

The best turtlenecks under $700
Under $700, virgin wool from Max Mara leads the edit. The Saluto, in espresso, is soft virgin wool, fully fashioned and close at the neck. A slim reddish-brown rib is sold as a polo neck sweater, its retailer's listing using the British name for a fold-over turtleneck, and a sand-colored turtleneck is relaxed, with elbow patches. Dries Van Noten's navy turtleneck is a striped ribbed cotton blend, and Jil Sander's black jersey is 55 percent polyester and 45 percent wool.
Three are viscose, and we say so because it changes how they wear: Proenza Schouler's red Fox is a matte viscose rib, and Zimmermann's bordeaux fine knit and bottle-green sheer high neck are light, close and cool rather than warm. Treat them as under-layers for heated rooms, not as sweaters for a walk across town. For every price, browse all turtleneck tops and sweaters.

How to wear a turtleneck: six outfits our stylists rely on
Most turtleneck outfits rest on one rule: keep the volume in one place. A fitted turtleneck can take wide trousers or a full skirt; a chunky one wants something narrow. Tuck a fine knit only at the front for a waist without bulk at the back, and reach for a bodysuit when nothing will stay tucked.
- The office: navy fine turtleneck, gray flannel trouser suit, black loafers.
- Dinner: black turtleneck bodysuit, a black satin midi skirt, black slingbacks and drop earrings.
- The weekend: oatmeal chunky turtleneck, dark straight jeans, white leather sneakers, a navy peacoat.
- Layered: burgundy fine turtleneck under a black slip dress, black tights, black knee boots.
- Travel: charcoal turtleneck, black wide trousers, white leather sneakers, a long gray coat.
- A gallery opening: black mock neck, a gray pleated midi skirt, black knee boots, silver earrings.
If you already own the turtleneck, tell our AI stylist which one it is and where you are going, and it will put the rest of the outfit together.
Turtleneck care: makeup, pilling and a collar that keeps its shape
The collar ages first. This is our stylists' routine; the care label always overrides it.
- Dress before makeup. Foundation transfers to the inside of a collar in one pull, so put the turtleneck on first.
- Earrings last. Hooks and posts catch in mohair, open knits and lace on the way over.
- Comb pills early. They start where something rubs: under the arms, where a bag strap sits, and on a turtleneck at the chin. Use a cashmere comb on knits; keep fabric shavers away from fine jersey, silk and tulle.
- Read the label, because they differ. Brunello Cucinelli's cashmere turtleneck is listed as hand wash only and dry flat; Max Mara's wool polo neck as hand wash cold and dry flat in the shade; Khaite's wool-and-silk Vivienne as dry clean only; and Saint Laurent's cupro jersey, perhaps surprisingly, as machine wash cold.
- Close the snaps. Fasten a bodysuit before washing so the hardware cannot catch the knit.
- Rest it. In our experience a rib collar recovers its spring if you give it a day off between wears. Fold turtlenecks for storage; never hang them.
What to buy once, and what to enjoy for a season: a fine cashmere or merino turtleneck in black, ivory or navy, a ribbed one that fits close, and a black turtleneck bodysuit will last for years. Cape sleeves, open backs, logos, prints and most sequins are one- or two-season pleasures. Buy them for the fun.
How we chose these turtlenecks
Every piece was sorted by the collar its photograph shows rather than the word in its name, which is how a top sold with "Mockneck styling" landed among the full turtlenecks and a "polo neck" among the fold-over ones. We read each composition and name the viscose, polyester, cupro and polyamide pieces in the text, and kept the cashmere edit to cashmere-led knits. We checked shoulders, because a dropped shoulder decides whether a knit can go under a jacket. Where a listing's color and its photograph disagreed, as with Khaite's "taupe" Vinci and ALAÏA's "brown" bodysuit, the picture won. The edit draws on more than 30 houses, with at most three pieces from one house in any edit, nothing pre-owned, and no piece repeated from another Vêtir guide.
Frequently asked questions
How should a women's turtleneck fit?
Close at the neck without pressing when you turn your head, with the shoulder seam on your shoulder if a jacket goes over it, and sleeves ending at the wrist bone. A fine turtleneck should tuck flat into high-waisted trousers; a chunky one should end around the hip bone.
What is the difference between a turtleneck and a mock neck?
A turtleneck is a tall collar folded over on itself. A mock neck is about half the height, a single layer that stands without folding. A funnel neck is wide and stands away from the throat. Brands use the names loosely, so judge the collar from the photograph.
How do you wear a turtleneck with a blazer?
Choose a fine wool, merino, cashmere or silk-blend turtleneck with a set-in or close raglan shoulder, tuck it in, and leave the blazer open so the lapels frame the collar. A sleeveless or short-sleeved turtleneck avoids bulk inside the jacket sleeve.
Can you wear a necklace with a turtleneck?
Yes. Over a mock neck, a collar-length chain sits well. Over a fine full turtleneck, a long pendant lies flat on the chest. With a chunky or cable knit, skip the necklace and wear earrings, because a pendant twists on the texture.
How do you keep makeup off a turtleneck?
Put the turtleneck on before foundation and powder, or pull it on over a thin scarf held across your face.
