The Best Designer Weekender Bags, and How to Choose One That Fits the Overhead Bin

The best designer weekender bags hold two or three nights of clothes and still go in the overhead bin. For a Thanksgiving flight or a trip home in December, choose a soft leather, suede or nylon duffel that measures no more than 22 x 14 x 9 inches with its handles counted, the carry-on limit Delta, United and American all publish; a soft bag gives a little where a rigid one will not. If you drive or take the train, size stops being the constraint, and a roomier, more structured bag becomes the better-looking choice. Either way, the details decide how a weekender travels: a zip that opens the full length, a shoulder strap you can take off, a firm base, and an empty weight you can lift above your head.
Travel is among the occasions people bring to Vêtir's AI stylist most often, and in the twelve months to September 2026 those requests peaked in November. Below: the carry-on rules, how many liters you need for how many nights, our picks for her from Chloé, Saint Laurent, Brunello Cucinelli, Magda Butrym, Pucci and Prada, the weekenders worth giving him, how each material wears, and how to pack one for a holiday trip.
Weekender bag size: what fits in the overhead bin
Start with the airline: the bag has to pass the sizer at the gate before it holds anything. Delta's carry-on rules, United's and American's all cap the carry-on at 22 x 14 x 9 inches, handles and wheels included. They differ on the personal item, and since the weekender is your carry-on, your handbag has to be the personal item.
| Delta | United | American | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Carry-on | 22 x 14 x 9 in (56 x 35 x 23 cm) with handles and wheels, and 45 linear inches (114 cm) in total at most | 22 x 14 x 9 in (56 x 35 x 23 cm) with handle and wheels | 22 x 14 x 9 in (56 x 36 x 23 cm) with handles and wheels |
| Personal item | No dimensions given; a purse, briefcase, small backpack, belt bag or laptop bag that fits under the seat in front | 17 x 10 x 9 in (43 x 25 x 22 cm), under the seat in front; no small purse on top of the two | 18 x 14 x 8 in (45 x 35 x 20 cm), under the seat in front |
| Regional flights | Delta Connection flights, including those with 50 or fewer seats: only personal items on board; larger bags get a pink Gate Claim/Planeside tag and come back as you leave the plane | Gate checks are most frequent on United Express; CommutAir allows only a personal item | American Eagle: a carry-on bigger than the personal-item size is checked free at the gate and returned on the jet bridge (not on the Embraer 175) |
What that means for a weekender:
- Each measurement is a limit on its own. Anything over 22 inches long fails however slim it is, and anything over 9 inches deep fails however short. A bag of exactly 22 x 14 x 9 also meets Delta's 45-inch total, with nothing to spare.
- Trust the measurements over the name. "Large", "XL" and "giant" mean different things at different houses. Saint Laurent's Giant Bowling bag is listed at 47 x 34 x 19 cm, inside a 56 x 35 x 23 cm box. Brunello Cucinelli's Explorer travel bag is listed at 36 cm tall before the handles are counted, a centimeter over, and Chloé gives its XL Paddington weekender a depth of 25 cm, two over, though slouchy leather compresses.
- Measure it packed. A listing measures a soft bag empty and the sizer measures it full, so measure yours packed, at the fattest point. It will not go under the seat either: Pucci's keepall, one of the smallest here at a little over 18 inches long, is too long for United's and American's personal-item limits.
- Plan for the hold. United tells passengers to keep medication, keys and other essentials in the personal item in case a bag is gate-checked; add jewelry and anything you could not replace. On most United flights, a gate-checked bag comes back at baggage claim at your final destination, not at the aircraft door.
- Small planes are stricter, trains more generous. The last leg to an island is often a small plane with a tight luggage allowance; our guide to what to pack for St. Barths sets out one operator's limit, and a soft duffel squeezes into a small hold where a rigid bag may not. Amtrak allows two carry-ons of up to 28 x 22 x 14 inches and 50 pounds each, plus a personal item of up to 14 x 11 x 7 inches and 25 pounds, so a December weekend by train can take a structured leather bag, as long as it fits the station's sizer.
- Check the fare. United Basic Economy includes only a personal item on most trips; a carry-on is allowed on flights to South America or across the Atlantic or Pacific, and for Premier members and their companions, Star Alliance Gold members and the primary cardmember of a qualifying MileagePlus card.
- Flying on to Europe? Lufthansa's carry-on allowance is 55 x 40 x 23 cm and 8 kg, about 17.6 pounds, and the airline says it checks the number, weight and size of carry-on bags at the airport. Weigh a leather weekender empty before you pack it.
These figures come from each carrier's own page as we read them in late September 2026. Policies change, and on a codeshare the operating airline's rules apply, so check yours before you pack.
How many liters? Weekender capacity by the night
Few designer listings give a capacity, but you can work out the ceiling: multiply length, height and depth in centimeters and divide by 1,000 to get liters. The 56 x 35 x 23 cm carry-on box comes to about 45 liters, the most any bag can hold on those three airlines. A barrel-shaped duffel of the same outer size holds about a fifth less, closer to 35, because its curves give up the corners. Our rule of thumb, for a cold-weather wardrobe in which knits and a second pair of boots take far more room than summer clothes:
- One night: 20 to 25 liters. A change of clothes, a wash bag and one pair of shoes. Pucci's keepall works out at about 24.
- Two nights: 30 to 40 liters. Most women's weekenders sit here: Saint Laurent's Giant Bowling bag comes to about 30 liters, Brunello Cucinelli's Explorer to about 40.
- Three nights or more: 45 liters, the carry-on maximum, and only if the coat, the boots and the heaviest knit travel on you. Past that, check a suitcase and keep the weekender for the journey.
The best designer weekender bags for women
The women's weekenders worth buying this season fall into two groups: leather and suede, which look richer and weigh more, and nylon and canvas, which are lighter and easier to live with. On Vêtir most designer duffels sit in the men's collections, so the women's edit is short, and every bag in it is built for travel. Browse all women's weekend bags.
Leather and suede
Chloé's XL Paddington weekender reworks the house's padlocked Paddington in slouchy grained buffalo leather, with a single zip and handles long enough to go over the shoulder of a coat: Chloé lists a 26 cm drop. Saint Laurent's Giant Bowling bag comes in suede or crocodile-embossed leather, with a two-way zip and a detachable crossbody strap; its handles drop only 13 cm, so the strap does the carrying. Brunello Cucinelli's Explorer, in suede or ivory leather, closes with a strapped flap and a lock rather than a zip, which makes it the neatest bag in a hotel lobby; pack small things in pouches inside it. Magda Butrym's Large Brigitte is a soft suede duffel with a two-way zip and the house's leather rosettes hanging from one handle.
- A Thanksgiving flight: a tan suede weekender, a cream cashmere crewneck, ecru jeans, a camel coat and brown suede loafers.
- A December weekend in the city: a black leather weekender, a charcoal flannel suit, a black roll-neck and black leather ankle boots.
- Christmas in the country: an ivory leather weekender, a burgundy cable-knit, gray flannel trousers, a navy wool coat and navy suede loafers.

Nylon and canvas
Nylon is the frequent flier's material: light, quick to dry and hard to mark. Pucci's Keepall is printed nylon with leather overlays, a two-way zip and a detachable shoulder strap, sized for one night at about 18 x 11.5 x 7 inches. Prada's Explore duffel is Re-Nylon trimmed in leather, with front and side pockets for what you need at security. Brunello Cucinelli's leather-trimmed tennis bag is lightweight canvas on an adjustable strap, a luxury duffle bag that works as well for a week of winter sun as it does for tennis.
- A ski weekend: a black nylon duffel, a white down jacket, a gray cashmere set and black snow boots, with ski boots and helmet in a bag of their own. Our ski trip packing list covers the rest.
- A week of winter sun: an off-white canvas duffel, a navy cashmere wrap for the plane, white jeans and white leather sneakers.

Weekenders to give him, and to borrow
A weekender is one of the easier luxury gifts to get right: there is no size to guess, and a good one gets used on every trip. Several of the best duffels, Bottega Veneta's Intrecciato duffel and The Row's Iowa among them, sit in the men's collections and are plain enough for anyone to carry. See all men's weekend bags.
Leather and suede duffels
Bottega Veneta weaves its duffel in Intrecciato leather and adds a detachable shoulder strap; The Row's Iowa is plain calf leather lined in lambskin, with a two-way zip. Tom Ford's Buckley holdall, in walnut suede, is listed at 19 x 12 x 7 inches, well inside a carry-on, and Berluti's Overnight bag in Venezia leather has a trolley sleeve that slides over the handle of a roller. Saint Laurent and Zegna make theirs in soft suede, and Brunello Cucinelli's burgundy suede duffel adds front pockets and protective feet. Prada's Saffiano travel bag has small metal feet and a detachable woven nylon strap, but at 25 cm deep it is a bag for the car.
- What he flies in: a navy cashmere crewneck, gray flannel trousers, a black overcoat and black suede loafers, with a black duffel on the shoulder.
- With a walnut or tan suede holdall: a cream roll-neck, olive cords, a camel overcoat and brown suede boots.

Canvas, nylon and flannel duffels
The Row's Sisal duffel is cotton canvas with a two-way zip, the simplest bag in this guide. Prada's Re-Nylon duffel is trimmed in Saffiano leather, with a leather pad on the shoulder strap and a lock on the zip. Moncler's Caradoc is nylon padded with down, a puffer in the shape of a duffel, and Fendi's FF Light duffle folds and rolls up, so it can travel flat in a suitcase and come home full of presents. Brunello Cucinelli's leather-trimmed duffel in wool, alpaca and cashmere flannel is the most wintry bag here, while Tom Ford's nylon holdall, at 16.5 inches tall, stays in the trunk. Brioni and Burberry add a leather-trimmed canvas duffel and one in the house check.

Leather, suede, nylon or canvas?
The material decides the weight, how the bag copes with sleet on a station platform, and how it looks after a year of trips.
| Material | Weight | Wet weather | How it wears | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Grained leather | Heavy | Copes with a shower; dry it slowly, away from heat | The grain hides scratches and scuffs | Frequent trips, if you can lift it |
| Smooth leather | Heavy | Water can spot the surface | Shows scratches and corner wear, and darkens with handling | The car, the train, city hotels |
| Suede | Lighter than most leathers | Marks easily; treat it with a protector before the first trip | Water and road salt leave marks; brushing lifts the nap | Dry trips and the car |
| Leather-trimmed canvas | Light | Absorbs water and can stain | Softens and marks; the leather wears first at the corners | Winter sun and country weekends |
| Nylon | The lightest | Sheds a shower and dries quickly | Resists scuffs; corners and piping fray eventually | Frequent fliers and ski trips |
Weight is the figure most listings leave out. The carry-on pages of Delta, United and American set no weight limit, but someone still has to lift the bag: Delta notes that its flight attendants cannot proactively help place carry-ons in the overhead bins, with certain exceptions, and Amtrak's rules say passengers must be able to lift their bags over their heads onto the luggage shelf. If a listing gives no empty weight, ask before you buy. For anyone who flies every month or travels alone, nylon or suede is the kinder choice; keep polished leather for trips where the car does the lifting.
Care is simple. Empty the bag after every trip, stuff it with tissue and store it in its dust bag, away from radiators and sunny windows. Brush suede once it has dried after sleet or a salted sidewalk, dry a soaked bag slowly at room temperature, and spot-clean nylon and canvas with a damp cloth, never in a washing machine. The pouches that keep a weekender in order are in luggage and travel.
What to look for: zips, straps, feet and a trolley sleeve
- A two-way zip across the top. It opens wide enough to see the bottom, and the second pull opens just one end at security.
- A removable, adjustable shoulder strap. Off in the car, on for the terminal. A wide strap spreads the load; a narrow one bites once the bag is full.
- Handles that clear a coat. A drop of about 10 inches lets the bag ride on the shoulder of a winter coat; at 5 inches, you carry it by hand or by the strap.
- Feet or a firm base to keep leather off wet platforms and terminal floors.
- A zipped pocket inside for the passport, chargers and earrings that otherwise sink under two days of clothes.
- A trolley sleeve, if you travel with a roller. A back panel that slides over the handle of a rolling case lets the weekender ride through the airport. Few luxury weekenders have one; Berluti's Overnight bag does.
How to pack a weekender for Thanksgiving or a December trip
- Plan the outfits first. One for each day and one for each evening, in two or three colors so every top works with every bottom. Thanksgiving falls on Thursday, November 26, this year, and our Thanksgiving outfit ideas cover the dinner itself. Wear the coat, the boots and the heaviest knit on the journey.
- Shoes go in first, heel to toe along the base in dust bags, so the weight sits low and the bag hangs level.
- Roll the casual pieces, fold the tailored ones. Knits and jeans roll into the gaps; blazers, shirts and dresses lie flat on top. For a holiday wedding, fold the dress once over tissue, lay it on top, and hang it in the bathroom while the shower runs when you arrive.
- Keep liquids within reach. Containers of 3.4 ounces (100 ml) or less go together in one quart-size clear bag, as Delta's and United's pages set out. The TSA's travel tips add that sauces, jam, preserves and wine over 3.4 ounces count as liquids and belong in a checked bag, so if the weekender is your only bag, buy the cranberry sauce when you land.
- Leave the presents unwrapped. TSA asks travelers to carry gifts in gift bags or in boxes with lids that lift off, so officers can inspect them without opening wrapped presents. Wrap them when you arrive, and put snow globes in a checked bag.
- Keep valuables in the personal item. Chargers, power banks, medication, jewelry and your passport stay under the seat in front. If a carry-on has to be checked, American's page asks you to take out batteries first, because they cannot travel in checked bags.
- Leave room for the trip home. A weekender packed to the seams no longer fits the sizer, and December trips come home heavier than they left. A duffel that folds flat, like Fendi's, can ride empty in a suitcase for the return.
For two nights, that means trousers worn on the journey, a knit, two tops, a dress for the evening with one pair of evening shoes, sleepwear and a wash bag. Our guide to packing efficiently for travel goes further, and our story on how to master airport style covers the outfit you fly in. Tell our AI stylist where you are going and for how long, and it will plan the outfits that go inside, shoes included.
Giving a weekender: what makes a good gift, and what to monogram
Match the bag to how the person travels, not to how they dress. Someone who flies every month wants a soft nylon or suede duffel inside 22 x 14 x 9 inches, with a shoulder strap; someone who drives to the country can take a structured leather bag they will never lift into a bin. Dark colors forgive terminal floors and car trunks; ivory leather and off-white canvas suit someone who notices a mark and deals with it the same day.
On monograms, we would put the initials on a leather luggage tag rather than stamp them on the bag: a tag can be replaced if the bag changes hands, and a bag without someone else's initials is easier to pass on or resell. Some of the bags here come with a tag already; Prada's Saffiano travel bag has a removable leather name tag, and Burberry's check duffel a detachable address tag. If you do personalize the bag itself, ask first whether personalized pieces can be returned. For the smaller things that travel inside, from passport covers to toiletry cases, see our luxury travel gifts, the travel accessories shop and our luxury gifts for him.
How we chose
We started with the overhead bin and worked outward. Every bag here is sold as a weekender, a duffel, a holdall or a travel bag, or, like Saint Laurent's Giant Bowling bag, measures big enough for two nights, and we read each listing for the closure, the strap, the base and the pockets. Where a listing gives measurements, we held them against the 22 x 14 x 9 inch carry-on and say in the text which bags are over. We left out bowling bags sold as "large" that turn out to be handbag-sized, tote-shaped bags sold as weekenders, suitcases, and every pre-owned or vintage listing. The women's edit is shorter than the men's because on Vêtir most designer duffels sit in the men's collections. The picks come from 15 houses, all new stock, and every one was live when we checked in late September.
Frequently asked questions
What size weekender bag can I take on a plane?
Up to 22 x 14 x 9 inches, handles and wheels included, on Delta, United and American; Lufthansa allows 55 x 40 x 23 cm and 8 kg. Rules differ by airline and fare, so check your carrier before you fly.
Does a weekender bag count as a personal item?
No, it is a carry-on. The personal item goes under the seat in front: United sets it at 17 x 10 x 9 inches and American at 18 x 14 x 8, and Delta gives examples such as a purse, a small backpack or a laptop bag.
How many liters should a weekender bag be?
As a rule of thumb, 30 to 40 liters for two nights and 20 to 25 for one. A bag at the 22 x 14 x 9 inch carry-on limit holds about 45 liters at most, and a barrel-shaped duffel of that size closer to 35.
Is leather or nylon better for a weekend bag?
Nylon if you fly often: it is the lightest and shrugs off rain and scuffs. Leather if you drive or take the train, or want a bag that ages well; grained leather hides wear better than smooth, and suede is lighter but marks in the wet.
What is the difference between a duffle bag and a weekender?
A duffel, also spelled duffle, is a shape: a soft, long bag with a zip along the top and two handles. A weekender is a use: any bag big enough for two or three nights, whether it is a duffel, a bowling bag or a structured travel bag.
Is a weekender a good gift?
Yes: there is no size to get wrong. Give a soft bag inside 22 x 14 x 9 inches to someone who flies and a structured one to someone who drives, with the initials on a luggage tag rather than the bag.
