Celine, Explained: The Triomphe, the Bags, the Sunglasses and Michael Rider's Celine

Celine is the Paris house that Céline Vipiana founded in 1945 as a made-to-measure shoe service for children. Today it is known for three things: leather bags marked with the Triomphe, sunglasses, and clean, grown-up tailoring. For a first purchase, buy where the house's identity is clearest: a Triomphe bag, a pair of Triomphe or 3 Dots sunglasses (the least expensive way in), or a Celine loafer or ballet lace-up. Since early 2025 the creative director has been Michael Rider, who spent a decade designing ready-to-wear at Celine under Phoebe Philo before he took charge. Below, our editors cover where Celine comes from, what each designer changed, the Celine bags worth knowing (including the Ava and the Luggage), how to choose Celine sunglasses by their size numbers, how the clothes and shoes fit, and what the resale market says about value.

A short history of Celine, from children's shoes to Michael Rider
Céline Vipiana began by making children's shoes to measure. In the 1960s she added the house's first leather goods and accessories, and in 1968 Celine introduced its first collection of what it calls luxurious sportswear, according to the house's own profile at the Comité Colbert, the association of French luxury houses. The emblem that defines Celine today also comes from the founder. The house says the Triomphe, two interlocking Cs, has been its symbol since 1971 (other accounts date it to 1972 or 1973). It is said to be based on the chain railings around the Arc de Triomphe, which, so the story goes, the founder noticed when her car broke down nearby. Celine is now owned by LVMH, and four designers shaped the modern house.
| Years | Designer | What changed |
|---|---|---|
| 1997 to 2004 | Michael Kors | Sporty, polished ready-to-wear that brought Celine's clothes back into the spotlight |
| 2008 to 2018 | Phoebe Philo | Spare, intelligent clothes and the bags of the 2010s, above all the Luggage; her debut collection was for spring 2010 |
| 2018 to 2024 | Hedi Slimane | Dropped the accent from the name, revived the Triomphe on bags and canvas, created the 16 bag, and added menswear, couture, fragrance and beauty |
| 2025 onward | Michael Rider | A Philo-era alumnus who mixes Celine's tailoring with a preppy, colorful streak; first show July 6, 2025 |
Rider was named on October 2, 2024, the day Hedi Slimane's exit was announced, and he started at the house in early 2025. He knows it from the inside: after beginning his career at Balenciaga under Nicolas Ghesquière, he spent a decade as design director of ready-to-wear at Celine under Philo, then became creative director of Polo Ralph Lauren. His first show, in the courtyard of the rue Vivienne headquarters, mixed men's and women's looks. It paired Philo-style volume in coats and trousers with slimmer lines and plenty of jewelry, belts and scarves, and Numéro counted 72 looks, with a preppy wardrobe that reflects his years at Ralph Lauren. Shoppers noticed quickly: in Lyst's index for the first quarter of 2026, Celine's ballet lace-up shoes ranked fourth among the hottest products in fashion. Closer to home, Celine was among the six designers named by the most users in requests to our own AI stylist over the twelve months to September 2026.
How to tell the Celine eras apart
The label is the quickest clue. Slimane removed the acute accent when he arrived in 2018, so an accent on the label (Céline) means the piece was made before that change. Philo's years, 2008 to 2018, are the era resale shoppers are searching for in fast-growing numbers (more on that below). The Triomphe clasp bags and the current Triomphe canvas belong to the years since Slimane revived the emblem; older pieces with the chain motif are vintage.
Celine bags: the Triomphe, the Ava and the Luggage
Celine bags fall into three families, and deciding which one you want narrows the search quickly.
The Celine Triomphe bag
The Triomphe is a structured flap bag closed by the emblem itself: a metal clasp, usually gold-finish, shaped as the two interlocking Cs, and carried on a leather strap or a chain. Slimane put the Triomphe back at the center of the house with his first show, for spring 2019, and the bag has run ever since, usually in smooth or glossy calfskin, with seasonal versions in colored leather and raffia. Buy it if you want the signature to be seen; the clasp does the talking, so plain black or tan leather will wear for years without dating. The smallest Triomphe crossbodies are phone-and-cards bags: the Teen size is about seven inches wide on Celine's listing, and a hard sunglasses case alone runs about six inches, so check the width and depth against what you actually carry.
Triomphe canvas and the Celine Ava
Triomphe canvas repeats the emblem as an all-over print, trimmed in calfskin or lambskin. Its best-known shape is the Ava, a curved, half-moon shoulder bag that Celine relaunched in 2020 as part of Slimane's Triomphe canvas collection; it has since come in soft leather with a magnetic flap marked by a gold Triomphe. The Ava sits close under the arm, which makes it a good travel and city bag. Canvas is lighter than leather, and the calfskin trim at the corners and strap takes most of the wear, so it is the easier choice for daily use.
The Luggage and the Philo-era shapes
The Luggage, a top-handle tote, was the It bag of Philo's years, and it tells a useful story about Celine and resale. Interest in her era is surging: saved searches for Philo-era Celine on The RealReal rose 650% year on year in the first half of 2026, according to the platform's 2026 resale report as reported by WWD. Prices have not followed. The same report put the Luggage's average sale price at $940 in 2026, down from $1,700 in 2016, even after a $130 rise over the past year. WWD noted that the report did not adjust the figures for inflation or say whether it controlled for condition and size, so read them as one marketplace's averages rather than a verdict. For a shopper, the practical point is that a secondhand Luggage sells for less on The RealReal, on average, than it did a decade ago, even as more people look for one. Rider knows these shapes well: his first collection included a new bag that reworks the Luggage with a curved zipper, alongside a raffia basket and oversized shoulder totes, as Numéro noted. If you prefer Celine without an obvious logo, look for these plainer, Philo-rooted shapes in smooth leather.
Which to buy first? For one bag that works from office to dinner, a Triomphe shoulder bag in black calfskin. For hands-free days and travel, an Ava. For a work tote, a plain leather tote from the Luggage family, new or pre-owned. Compare them across houses in our edit of designer bags worth investing in, or browse designer shoulder bags.
Celine shoes: ballet lace-ups, loafers and sneakers
The Celine shoes we checked are made in Italy and sized in European sizes, roughly 34 to 41.5, with half sizes on most styles. Three styles cover most wardrobes.
- The ballet lace-up. A ballet flat with laces: soft lambskin, a sheepskin lining, gold eyelets and a thin, flexible leather sole. It is the style Lyst ranked among fashion's hottest products in early 2026. Wear it with cropped straight trousers or a midi skirt; the laces make it look sportier than a classic ballerina.
- The loafer. Look for the house details: an almond toe, a low stacked leather heel and a small gold Triomphe on the apron. Loafers suit wide wool trousers and straight jeans, and a fine ribbed sock in the same color as the trouser keeps the line long in winter.
- The sneaker. Celine's canvas-and-suede low tops carry a Triomphe embroidered on the side and sit on a rubber sole: the weekend shoe, and the one to choose if you walk more than you drive.
Fit notes: thin-soled lambskin flats relax with wear, so start with your usual size and choose the smaller of two half sizes if you are between them. Loafers need to grip at the heel from the first wear, because the heel will not tighten as the leather softens. Celine sunglasses: Triomphe, 3 Dots and how to read the size
Sunglasses are the most accessible way into Celine, and the range is deep. The eyewear is made in Italy by Thélios, LVMH's eyewear company, founded in 2017. The department-store listings we checked promise 100% UV protection, and several include a case and cleaning cloth. Four families are worth knowing:
- Triomphe. The metal emblem sits on the temples of acetate frames in oval, square, rectangular, round and cat-eye shapes. If you are unsure where to start, start here with a black or tortoiseshell oval.
- Maxi Triomphe. The metal emblem stands in relief on both temples of bolder frames, such as butterfly, round and rectangular shapes.
- 3 Dots. Three small metal pins at the front corners of the frame, with temples lacquered underneath to read CELINE on one side and PARIS on the other. Bold 3 Dots uses thicker acetate for a more graphic line.
- Metal and runway frames. Thin gold or palladium frames carry the Triomphe on the temples. The Défilé collection (défilé is French for a fashion show) brings the runway shapes, such as a flat-browed pilot and a small round frame marked with two dots and an engraved gold logo.
How to choose the right size of Celine sunglasses
Every listing we checked gives three numbers, such as 53-18-145: lens width, bridge width and temple length, in millimeters. Compare them with a pair that already fits you. Lens widths around 50 to 52 suit a narrower face, while 55 and above reads oversized. The bridge number matters if you have a low nose bridge: a narrower bridge, or the adjustable nose pads found on most metal frames, keeps the frame from sliding. On shape, a cat-eye lifts the face and flatters a soft jawline, square and rectangular frames add structure to a round face, and an oval softens angular features. Tortoiseshell is the easiest color with camel and brown, black with a black-and-white wardrobe, and a gold metal frame reads lighter and dressier. The 3 Dots and runway frames are the better choice if you want Celine without a visible emblem: the three pins are the only signature, and they read as a detail rather than a logo.

Celine ready-to-wear: tailoring, denim and how it fits
Celine sizes its clothing in French sizes, 34 to 44 on the house's own listings we checked. French sizes run 32 above the US scale, so a French 36 is roughly a US 4, a 38 a US 6 and a 40 a US 8. Jeans are sized by waist, from 24 to 32. Each listing states the cut, such as classic fit or loose fit, and describes jeans by rise and leg, so read that line before you choose a size: a loose, mid-rise boyfriend jean is meant to sit away from the leg, and sizing down to make it fitted spoils the shape.
What to look for: short, structured jackets in bouclé tweed with braided trim, cropped gabardine jackets closed with Triomphe-engraved horn buttons, and trousers and jeans marked with a small Celine Paris Triomphe patch. In jackets, fit the shoulders first; a tailor can take in the body but cannot fix a shoulder. Hem wide trousers for the shoe you wear most: with ballet lace-ups or loafers, the back of the hem should just clear the floor. Browse more designer jeans if you want to compare denim cuts across houses.
Is Celine worth it? What holds its value
As clothes and accessories to wear, Celine earns its place with cut and materials: the shoes, sunglasses and tailoring we checked are made in Italy, and the house's recurring lines, such as the Triomphe and 3 Dots, stay in the collection season after season. As an investment, be realistic. The Luggage, the defining bag of the Philo years, now sells on The RealReal for less on average than it did in 2016, even while saved searches for Philo-era Celine are climbing steeply. Demand follows particular shapes and years, and it does not guarantee a price.
Where the value is highest: bags in plain leather with house hardware, and tailoring you will wear for years. Sunglasses are the lowest-risk way into the house, but buy them to wear, not to resell. Seasonal novelties, such as printed silk and raffia, are the pieces to buy for joy rather than value. If resale matters to you, keep the dust bag, box and receipt, and choose black, tan or brown over a seasonal color. If you want a Philo-era piece, the resale market is the only place to find one, and on the Luggage, at least, average prices are lower than they were a decade ago.
If you like Celine, look at these houses too
- Phoebe Philo: the designer's own label, with the precise tailoring and bags her Celine was known for.
- The Row: quieter still, with no logo at all. See our guide to The Row.
- Saint Laurent: sharp Paris tailoring and sunglasses with more edge. See our Saint Laurent guide.
- Toteme: minimal outerwear and knits at a lower price.
- Loewe: craft-led leather bags with a more playful streak, also owned by LVMH.
How to care for Celine leather, canvas and raffia
- Smooth and glossy calfskin: store the bag stuffed with tissue in its dust bag, away from sunlight, and wipe it with a soft dry cloth. Glossy leather shows scratches, so keep keys and pens in an inner pocket.
- Lambskin: softer and more easily scuffed than calfskin; keep it out of the rain and away from denim, which can transfer dye.
- Triomphe canvas: wipe the canvas with a barely damp cloth and dry it at once. The leather trim is the part to protect, since it wears first at the corners and handles.
- Raffia and sisal: keep them dry, store them flat or stuffed, and reshape with tissue after a trip.
- Sunglasses: carry them in the case, clean the lenses only with a soft lens cloth, and have a loose hinge tightened by an optician rather than bending the temples yourself.
How to style Celine
Celine's look is Parisian and precise: a few well-cut pieces, one clear signature, nothing fussy. Four formulas to start from:
- Weekday: a cropped gabardine jacket, straight jeans, ballet lace-ups and a black Triomphe shoulder bag, finished with oval tortoiseshell sunglasses.
- Office: a navy blazer over a striped poplin shirt, wide wool trousers and loafers, the preppy streak Rider brought to the house. Keep the bag plain leather.
- Weekend: an Ava in Triomphe canvas, a gray crewneck, loose jeans and white sneakers.
- Evening: a short bouclé jacket over a black dress, sheer tights and a small Triomphe on a chain, with metal cat-eye sunglasses for the drive there.
Proportion keeps all four clean: a short jacket over a wide leg, or a long coat over a slim one. If you want the full outfit built around a Celine piece you already own, ask our AI stylist to style it.
How we chose
Every product in this guide is by Celine, new rather than pre-owned, and was in stock when we checked it. When we checked, Celine's new stock on Vêtir was concentrated in sunglasses, with a smaller selection of bags, shoes and ready-to-wear, so the modules reflect what you can actually buy new rather than the full Celine range. We read materials, fit notes, sizes and country of manufacture on each listing, looked at every product image to confirm color and shape, and favored the house's recurring lines: the Triomphe, Triomphe canvas, 3 Dots and the Celine loafer and ballet lace-up.
Frequently asked questions
Is it Celine or Céline?
Both refer to the same house. Hedi Slimane dropped the acute accent from the logo in 2018, so the house now writes its name as Celine; labels that read Céline were made before then.
Who is the creative director of Celine?
Michael Rider. He was named in October 2024, started in early 2025 and showed his first Celine collection in Paris on July 6, 2025. Before that he spent a decade as design director of ready-to-wear at Celine under Phoebe Philo and was creative director of Polo Ralph Lauren.
What is the Celine Triomphe?
The house's emblem of two interlocking Cs, which Celine says has been its symbol since 1971 and which is said to be based on the chain around the Arc de Triomphe. It gives its name to the Triomphe bag, whose clasp is the emblem, and to Triomphe canvas.
Where are Celine sunglasses made?
In Italy, by Thélios, LVMH's eyewear company. The department-store listings we checked promise 100% UV protection, and several include a case and a cleaning cloth.
Does Celine run small?
There is no single answer, because Celine describes the cut of each piece rather than giving one fit rule. The clothes come in French sizes (a French 38 is roughly a US 6), and each listing states the cut, such as classic fit or loose fit; the shoes come in European sizes with half sizes. Start with your usual conversion and let the cut described on the listing decide.
Is Celine worth it?
To wear, yes, if you buy the house's core pieces: Italian-made shoes and sunglasses, precisely cut tailoring and bags with house hardware. As an investment, no guarantee: The RealReal's 2026 report put the Luggage's average resale price at $940, down from $1,700 in 2016, even as searches for Phoebe Philo-era Celine rose 650% in a year. Plain leather in black, tan or brown, kept with its dust bag and box, is the safest choice if resale matters.
