Dior, Explained: The Lady Dior, the Saddle, the Book Tote and the Bar Jacket

Dior is the Paris couture house Christian Dior opened in December 1946 and launched on February 12, 1947, with the collection the press named the New Look. If you are buying your first piece, choose one of its four modern signatures: the Lady Dior top-handle bag, the Saddle, the Book Tote or the Bar jacket, the nipped-waist jacket from that first collection. Since 2025 every Dior line, women's, men's and haute couture, has been designed by Jonathan Anderson, the first single designer to lead all three since Christian Dior himself. Below, our editors cover where Dior comes from and who has designed it, how to choose between the Dior bags and their sizes, how the Bar jacket and the clothes fit, the J'Adior and other shoes, what holds its value, and how to care for cannage lambskin and embroidered canvas.

A short history of Dior, from the New Look to Jonathan Anderson

Christian Dior showed his first collection in his salons on avenue Montaigne on February 12, 1947. He called the line Corolle; Carmel Snow, editor of American Harper's Bazaar, christened it the New Look on the spot, according to the Victoria and Albert Museum, which holds a Bar suit. The Bar was one of that collection's most popular models: a jacket in natural tussore silk, padded at the hips, over a fully pleated black wool crêpe skirt mounted on a stiffened taffeta petticoat. The volume was the scandal. A woolen day dress could take 15 meters of fabric at a time when rationing was still in place.

Dior died in 1957, and the house has been led since by a line of designers who each left a mark on it:

Anderson, who had led Loewe since 2013, was named creative director of Dior's women's, men's and haute couture collections on June 2, 2025, the first time all three have been under one designer since Christian Dior himself, as Fashion Dive reported. He showed his first menswear later that June, his first women's collection in the Tuileries on October 1, 2025, and his first couture collection in January 2026. His early work has been a deliberate remix of the archive: Bar jackets cut in Irish Donegal tweed, a Bar scooped up at the front as if tied like a bow, and bows everywhere, from the shoes to the detachable leather bow on some Lady D-Joy bags. His first men's show also reworked two house bags: the Book Tote carried book covers, including Françoise Sagan's Bonjour Tristesse, and the textile artist Sheila Hicks reimagined the Lady Dior.

How to tell the Dior eras apart

Look at the logo. From about 2018 until Anderson arrived, Dior used an all-capital DIOR, so that wordmark usually dates a piece to those years. Anderson has returned to the house's original 1946 logotype, set in the Cochin typeface with a capital D followed by lowercase letters, according to nss magazine's history of the Dior logo. Saddle bags on the resale market come from two runs: Galliano's, from 2000, and the revival that began with Chiuri's fall 2018 collection.

Dior bags: the Lady Dior

The Lady Dior is the house's defining bag: a structured top-handle shape in lambskin topstitched with cannage, a diamond pattern that alludes to the cane chairs of Dior's original couture salon, with gold-tone D.I.O.R. charms hanging from rounded handles. The V&A, which holds one in its collection, dates its launch to 1995. It was first called Chouchou, French for favorite, and was renamed Lady Dior in honor of Diana, Princess of Wales, after Bernadette Chirac, then France's first lady, gave her one, the museum's catalog entry records.

How to choose one:

  • The classic. Black cannage lambskin with gold-tone charms is the version that dates least. Lambskin is soft and scuffs more easily than calfskin, so this is a bag for dressing up rather than for a crowded commute.
  • The Lady D-Joy. A longer, slimmer take on the Lady Dior line, with a detachable chain and a leather shoulder strap. It carries a phone and cards on the shoulder, which makes it the more practical choice day to day.
  • Size. Dior has made the classic Lady Dior in sizes from micro and mini up to small, medium and large. The one in the V&A's collection measures 24 by 20 by 11 cm, about 9.5 by 8 by 4.5 inches: the size most people picture, and the smallest we would choose for a wallet, a phone and a sunglasses case. The smaller sizes are evening and hands-free bags, so check the listing's dimensions against what you carry.

Cannage runs through other Dior bags too, quilted into lambskin, woven into raffia or blown up as a larger Macrocannage. Compare structured shapes across houses in our edit of designer bags worth investing in, or browse all designer top-handle bags.

The Dior Saddle and the Dior Book Tote

The Saddle

The Saddle was designed in 1999 and first appeared on the runway in John Galliano's collection for spring 2000. Its kidney shape swings from a short handle, with a D-shaped stirrup hanging from the flap and CD initials on either side of the handle. Maria Grazia Chiuri brought it back for fall 2018, one of several signatures of her tenure, and today's versions add a thin, adjustable, removable strap, so the bag can be carried by hand, on the shoulder or crossbody. The version on Dior's listings measures about 10 by 8 by 2.5 inches, which Dior says fits a phone, a card holder, sunglasses and a lipstick. The Saddle sits close under the arm on its short handle, and the curved base makes it look best against a straight line: a tailored coat, a slim knit, a fitted jacket.

The Book Tote

Chiuri introduced the Book Tote in the spring-summer 2018 collection. It is an open, flat-handled tote, usually in canvas embroidered all over, with the Dior or Christian Dior signature on the front. The medium size with a strap, about 14 by 11 by 6.5 inches on Dior's listing, is the practical choice for work, but it is not light: Dior gives its weight as about 2.5 pounds empty. Because it is open at the top, it suits the office and weekends better than travel. Anderson has kept the Book Tote and treats its embroidered front as a canvas for artwork, such as book covers, so expect new designs season to season.

Which to buy? The Saddle if you want a shoulder or crossbody bag with an unmistakable silhouette; the Book Tote if you need a work tote that does not look corporate. For more cross-body options, see our guide to the best designer crossbody bags.

The Bar jacket and how Dior's clothes fit

The Bar jacket is the piece that explains Dior's clothes. It is closely fitted through the torso, nipped at the waist, and flares into a short basque over the hips, so it makes the waist look smaller by contrast. Today there are two families. The classic Bar, with notched lapels, three buttons and a lightweight wool-and-silk cloth, stays close to the 1947 original; Anderson's versions play with it, collarless with covered buttons, or cut in tweed.

Sizing. Dior's ready-to-wear is sized in French sizes, 34 to 46 on the listings we checked (up to 50 on the classic Bar), which run 32 above US sizes: a French 36 is roughly a US 4, a 38 a US 6, a 40 a US 8. On several Bar jackets Dior's own listing states the fitted silhouette and recommends ordering one size larger for a more comfortable fit. Follow that advice if you plan to wear a sweater underneath or if you are between sizes, and fit the shoulders first: a tailor can take in the waist but cannot rebuild a shoulder.

How to wear it. The basque needs a clean line below it. Wear the Bar over straight or slim trousers, a pencil or pleated skirt, or straight jeans; avoid bulky wide-leg trousers that fight with the flare at the hip. Button it and skip the belt, since the jacket already defines the waist. Anderson has shown it over miniskirts, including denim, which is the easiest way to wear a formal jacket in the day. Dior shoes: J'Adior slingbacks and the new shapes

The J'Adior slingback is a Chiuri creation, built on a pointed toe, a sculpted comma heel and an embroidered ribbon across the foot. Anderson has released new J'Adior pumps, sandals and ballet flats, with the Dior-embroidered ribbon tied into a flat bow, and added shapes of his own, including a suede loafer, a square-toe woven mule and a biker-style ankle boot. Dior makes its shoes in Italy and lists most of them in European sizes, roughly 34 to 42 with half sizes, though some listings use US or Italian sizes, so check the size system on each one.

Fit notes: pointed toes need length, so if your toes feel pinched, go up half a size rather than hoping the leather will give. Slingbacks with an elastic strap forgive a narrow heel; mules do not, so buy those in your exact size. The heels on the pumps and sandals we checked run up to 10 cm, about 4 inches, high enough for the office only if you are used to heels, so the ballet flat is the everyday choice. Compare Dior with other houses in designer slingbacks.

Dior jewelry: the easiest way into the house

Dior's fashion jewelry costs a fraction of a Dior bag and carries the same codes. Look for the CD initials, the lily of the valley that Christian Dior counted among his lucky charms, and the Tribales earrings, built around the house's signature resin pearls. These pieces are gold-finish or silver-finish metal rather than fine gold, so treat them as costume jewelry: take them off before swimming or the gym, keep perfume and lotion away from the finish, and store each piece in its pouch.

Is Dior worth it? What holds its value

As clothes and bags to use, the classics earn their price through construction you can see: the Bar jacket's silk-lined, close-fitted cut, the Lady Dior's topstitched cannage and the Saddle's calfskin, all made in France or Italy on the listings we checked. As an investment, be more careful than bag marketing suggests. Resale prices move with the model, the size, the color and above all the condition, and nothing guarantees that a Dior bag will be worth more later than it cost new.

In our view, the pieces most likely to keep their appeal are the Lady Dior in black or another neutral, the Saddle in plain leather or the Oblique jacquard, and the Bar jacket, which you will wear for a decade. The least likely are seasonal prints, summer capsules, embellished novelties and sneakers, which you should buy because you love them. Keep the dust bag, box and receipt, and keep leather bags stuffed and away from sunlight so the shape survives.

If you like Dior, look at these houses too

  • Chanel: the other great Paris couture house for tailoring and quilted bags. See our Chanel guide.
  • Celine: cleaner lines and the Triomphe; see our Celine guide.
  • Saint Laurent: sharper, darker Paris tailoring from the house founded by Dior's first successor.
  • Loewe: craft-led leather goods from the house Anderson led before Dior.

How to care for cannage lambskin, calfskin and embroidered canvas

  • Cannage lambskin: the softest leather Dior uses for bags, and the easiest to scuff. Store it stuffed with tissue in its dust bag, keep it away from denim and rain, and wipe it only with a soft dry cloth.
  • Calfskin and grained calfskin: hardier, and the better choice for a daily Saddle. Buff away light marks with a dry cloth and let a damp bag dry naturally, away from heat.
  • Embroidered canvas: spot-clean the Book Tote with a barely damp cloth, never soak it, and keep pens capped inside, since ink will not come out of embroidery.
  • Charms and hardware: wrap charms and CD letters in tissue before storing so they do not dent the leather.
  • Tailoring: dry-clean wool-and-silk jackets sparingly, hang them on a shaped hanger that fills the shoulder, and give tweed a day to rest between wears.

How to style Dior

Dior is about the waist and the line from shoulder to hip, so build around one strong shape at a time. Four formulas:

  1. Office: a black Bar jacket, a white shirt, a pleated black skirt below the knee and J'Adior slingbacks, with a Lady Dior in the hand.
  2. Weekend: a tweed Bar jacket over a fine turtleneck with straight jeans, a suede loafer and a Saddle worn crossbody.
  3. Dinner: a cropped jacket over a slip dress, pearl Tribales earrings and a small Lady D-Joy on its chain.
  4. Work tote day: a navy knit, wide-leg trousers, ballet flats and a Book Tote; keep the palette plain so the embroidery carries the look.

How we chose

Every product in this guide is by Dior, new rather than pre-owned, and was in stock when we checked it, most of it listed directly by Dior. We favored the house's recurring lines, the Lady Dior, the Saddle, the Book Tote, the Bar jacket and the J'Adior shoes, over one-season pieces, read materials, fit notes and country of manufacture on each listing, and looked at every product image to confirm color and shape. When we checked, every classic Lady Dior on Vêtir was pre-owned, as were most Saddles, so those appear in the text but not in the modules.

Frequently asked questions

Who is the creative director of Dior?

Jonathan Anderson, formerly of Loewe. He was named creative director of Dior's women's, men's and haute couture collections on June 2, 2025, and showed his first women's collection on October 1, 2025. He is the first designer to lead all three lines since Christian Dior.

Why is it called the Lady Dior?

The bag was first called Chouchou. It was renamed in honor of Diana, Princess of Wales, after Bernadette Chirac, then France's first lady, gave her one; the V&A dates the bag's launch to 1995.

What sizes does the Lady Dior come in?

Dior has made the classic Lady Dior in sizes from micro and mini up to small, medium and large. The one in the V&A's collection measures 24 by 20 by 11 cm, about 9.5 by 8 by 4.5 inches, which is the size to choose if you carry a wallet and a sunglasses case; the smaller sizes are evening bags. The Lady D-Joy, a longer and slimmer version of the line, comes with a chain and a leather shoulder strap.

Which is more practical, the Saddle or the Book Tote?

For a small everyday bag, the Saddle: it has a crossbody strap and fits a phone, card holder, sunglasses and lipstick. For work, the Book Tote, which holds far more but is open at the top and heavy for its size.

Does Dior run small?

Dior's jackets are cut close to the body, and on several Bar jackets the house itself recommends ordering one size larger. Clothes come in French sizes (a French 38 is roughly a US 6) and shoes in European sizes with half sizes.
