Miu Miu, Explained: The Wander, the Arcadie, the Ballet Flats and How to Buy Well

Miu Miu is Miuccia Prada's second house, founded in 1993 and named after her family nickname, and it is where she designs with the fewest rules. If you are buying your first piece, choose one of three: a Wander, the soft, rounded matelassé hobo; an Arcadie, the small top-handle bag that stands up on a table; or a pair of its ballet flats, which, with the Arcadie, made Miu Miu the hottest brand on the Lyst Index for the first time in 2023. All three show what the house does best: a familiar, slightly girlish object, made grown-up by beautiful leather. A short history of Miu Miu

The Prada Group's own history dates Miu Miu to 1993, the year Prada launched its first menswear and Fondazione Prada was established, and calls the label Miuccia Prada's "other soul", a laboratory for new expressions of style. The name was hers, too: Miu Miu is her family nickname, as W magazine noted in its interview marking the label's 30th anniversary. She started it to explore her more experimental ideas, and she told the magazine that anything she could not do at Prada, she wanted to do at Miu Miu.

In the 1990s Miu Miu set the look of a generation. Vogue credits the house with imprinting the knee-length pencil skirt and the vintage-style camisole on the way the 1990s generation dressed. In 1995, months after the release of the film Kids, Mrs. Prada cast its star, Chloë Sevigny, to open Miu Miu's spring 1996 show in New York, W reports; Sevigny's name has been tied to the label ever since, and she was back on its runway for fall 2026.

The modern chapter began with the spring 2022 show in October 2021. Mrs. Prada cut office clothes down to size: pleated miniskirts so short, as W put it, that the pocket linings showed, sweaters and shirts cropped above the waist, and frayed edges. The next show, for fall 2022, moved to the tennis club, with ballet flats worn over knitted socks. The Wander, the bag we come to below, arrived the same year.

The results show in the Lyst Index, the quarterly ranking of fashion's hottest brands. Miu Miu overtook Prada to reach No. 1 for the first time in the third quarter of 2023, on demand for its ballet flats and the Arcadie bag, and returned to the top spot in the third quarter of 2024. In the second quarter of 2026 it ranked second, behind Chanel, after searches rose 30 percent on the previous quarter, helped by its crochet bags and the New Balance line worn by Coco Gauff at Wimbledon. On Vêtir, in the first seven weeks after our search box launched in August 2026, Miu Miu tied with Prada as the fourth most searched brand, counted by the number of people who searched for it, after Gucci, Khaite and Saint Laurent.

Miu Miu runway codes, season by season

Miu Miu returns to the same ideas season after season, so the recent shows are a practical map of what is in the shops. The fall 2026 collection, shown in March 2026, is the one in stores this winter. Vogue Runway's review read it as a return to fundamentals, in a palette of black, gray, camel and burgundy. Miu Miu bags: the Wander

The Wander is Miu Miu's signature in its purest form: a rounded hobo in matelassé, the house's puffy, gathered quilting, worked in soft nappa, with a short quilted handle that continues the curve of the body. Its full name is the Miu Wander. According to WWD, it was pre-launched in fabric for spring 2022 and officially introduced in leather that fall, in two sizes, and it was the subject of Miu Miu's first advertising campaign dedicated to a single bag, photographed by Tyrone Lebon and fronted by Sydney Sweeney. The label's chief executive at the time told WWD that ready-to-wear accounted for almost half of Miu Miu's sales and leather goods came second, and that the Wander was part of a renewed focus on bags.

The family has grown since. It now includes the original hobo, a mini, a top-handle bag and a small tote, in nappa and in suede, shearling, woven, crochet-trimmed and aged-leather versions. The hobo is smaller than it looks, about 20 centimeters (8 inches) across: it takes a phone and a small wallet, and the mini holds less. Black and blush go with everything, and red is the one to buy if you want the bag to be the only color in a black, gray and camel wardrobe.

• Winter weekends: a black Wander on the shoulder with a long camel coat, a gray crewneck and straight jeans.
• Evenings: the mini, carried by its handle, with a bias-cut slip skirt, a cardigan and ballet flats.
• The color move: a red Wander against an all-black outfit, the brightest thing you wear.

Miu Miu bags: the Arcadie

The Arcadie arrived in 2023, and within months it was one of the two products, with the ballet flats, that Lyst credited for Miu Miu's first No. 1. It is the Wander's opposite: a small, rectangular top-handle bag, about 22 centimeters (8.5 inches) across, that stands up on its own, with two rolled handles, a zip across the top and a detachable shoulder strap. On the matelassé versions, a little leather case holding a mirror hangs from one handle. The Arcadie also comes in smooth leather, suede and studded versions, and as a mini. Newer Miu Miu bags: the Ivy, Aventure, Vivant and Beau

Miu Miu's newer bags trade quilting for smooth, aged and crocheted leather. The Ivy is a slouchy tote that also comes as a striped crochet shopper, and crochet bags were one of the reasons Lyst gave for Miu Miu's climb back into its top three in 2026. The Aventure is a zipped top-handle bag with a strap across the front, the Vivant a structured bowling bag with a padlock charm, the Beau a half-moon shoulder bag, and the Rendez-vous and the Spirit are soft shoulder bags. They have less of a track record than the Wander and the Arcadie, so choose them for the shape rather than as the safe first bag.

Miu Miu ballet flats

Miu Miu's ballet flats came to the fore at the fall 2022 show, where the tennis-club looks were finished with ballerinas and knitted socks. By 2023 they were, with the Arcadie, one of the two products behind the house's first No. 1 on the Lyst Index. The range now runs from the soft ballerina held on by a logo elastic, in leather, satin or velvet, to Mary Janes with a buckled strap, pointed suede styles and winter pairs lined with shearling.

• The runway way: white or gray socks, a pleated skirt and a cropped cardigan.
• Every day: straight jeans that end at the ankle, a collared knit and a long coat.
• In winter: sheer black tights with a knee-length skirt, or the shearling-lined Mary Janes with wide trousers.

Fit: the flats are made in European sizes, and many retailers list them converted to US sizes, half sizes included, so check which system a listing uses before you choose. The elastic styles are the most forgiving, buckled Mary Janes can be adjusted, and pointed styles need your exact size. Miu Miu sneakers

Miu Miu sneakers come in two families. The New Balance collaboration reworks the sports brand's classic running shoes in Miu Miu's suedes and leathers, and Lyst named it among the drivers of Miu Miu's rise in the second quarter of 2026. Miu Miu's own sneakers are slim, low and retro: the Plume, a flat suede trainer on a thin rubber sole; the Gymnasium, a gym-shoe shape in suede or leather, some with a buckled strap; and satin versions of the Plume that sit halfway between a sneaker and a ballet flat. Wear them the way you would the flats, with straight trousers cropped at the ankle, jeans, or a pleated skirt and socks. Miu Miu knitwear, skirts and the low-rise codes

Miu Miu clothes are built from school and office staples, cut a little shorter, closer or lower than you expect. The knitwear is the easiest way in: cashmere cardigans with a detachable shirt collar that buttons on, cardigans with a round embroidered collar, and knit polos, some with an argyle front. A collared cardigan buttoned to the top works as a sweater on its own; worn open over a shirt, it is the Miu Miu version of a jacket. The skirts carry the house's two proportions. The low-rise micro-mini, a code since spring 2022, sits on the hip: wear it with opaque tights and a longer knit that covers the waistband rather than with a crop top, and it works well past your twenties. The knee-length pencil skirt, a Miu Miu idea since the 1990s and back on the fall 2026 runway, is its grown-up counterpart: wear it with a fitted shirt or a collared cardigan, ballet flats or a low heel. How Miu Miu fits

Clothing. Retailers list Miu Miu clothes either in Italian sizes or converted to US sizes, so check which system each listing uses before you compare. Read the fit line on each listing: slim-fit knits sit close to the body, boxy polos are cut loose, and mini skirts are short by design. If you plan to wear a shirt under a slim cardigan, go up a size.

Shoes. European sizes, usually converted to US sizes with half sizes. Leather and suede give a little with wear; satin gives much less, so choose satin pairs in the size that fits from the first day.

Bags. Most lines come in more than one size, from mini to large, and the names alone do not tell you how big a bag is. Compare the dimensions on each listing with a bag you already carry.

Miu Miu Women's Tales

Miu Miu's other long-running project is on screen. Since 2011 the house has commissioned short films from women directors under the title Miu Miu Women's Tales, with more than 30 episodes so far, from Zoe Cassavetes, who made the first, to Lucrecia Martel, Ava DuVernay, Agnès Varda, Chloë Sevigny, Mati Diop and, most recently, Claire Denis. Each director has total freedom over the story; the one constant is Miu Miu's clothes, which the house describes as a cast of characters in their own right. Miuccia Prada has summed up the idea:

Miu Miu or Prada?

Same designer, different temperament. How to care for matelassé, suede and satin

• Matelassé nappa: wipe it with a dry, soft cloth, keep it away from heat and damp, and store it stuffed with tissue in its dust bag so the quilting keeps its shape. Keep pens and makeup capped inside, because a lining cannot be cleaned on its own. For damage, take it to a Miu Miu boutique or contact client service, which handle repairs case by case; Miu Miu warns that cleaning or repairs by unauthorized third parties can limit what it can do for the bag later.
• Suede bags and sneakers: brush in one direction with a suede brush, and use a protective spray before the first wet day.
• Satin and velvet flats: save them for dry days, and store them in their dust bags so the fabric does not snag.
• Shearling: let it air out after wearing and brush the pile gently; do not dry it near a radiator.
