Loewe Bags, Explained: The Puzzle, Amazona, Flamenco, Hammock and Squeeze, Size by Size

For most people, the best Loewe bag is the Puzzle Edge in the Small size: it carries by hand, on the shoulder or across the body, holds a day's essentials and weighs about 1.1 pounds, according to Loewe's own listing. For evening, choose the Flamenco clutch; for work, the Amazona 180 or a Puzzle Fold tote; for a softer everyday bag, the Squeeze or the Hammock. This guide takes Loewe bags family by family, with the dimensions and weights Loewe publishes, how each one carries and who it suits. It also covers the house's history, what has changed since Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez took over in 2025, a size comparison of the key models and how to care for Loewe leather.

Loewe in brief: from a Madrid workshop to the Puzzle

Loewe was founded in Madrid in 1846 as a small leather workshop on Calle Lobo, and it describes itself as the second-oldest luxury fashion house in the world. The name dates to 1872, when the German merchant Enrique Loewe Roessberg acquired the workshop, and, as Loewe's welcome page explains, the name is pronounced lo-weh-vay. It became an official supplier to the Spanish crown in 1905, and its first named handbag, the Amazona, arrived in 1975, according to W magazine's history of the bag.

The modern chapter began when Jonathan Anderson became creative director in 2013. His Puzzle bag, first shown in his debut spring 2015 menswear collection and released that year, was the first new bag shape Loewe had introduced since the 1980s, according to WWD's history of the Puzzle. Anderson left in 2025 after 11 years to lead Dior, which named him creative director of its women's, men's and haute couture collections that June. His successors are Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez, the founders of Proenza Schouler, who in Loewe's words have been at the helm of all its collections since 2025. Loewe's leather bags are made in Spain, and 2026 is the house's 180th year. Beyond leather, Loewe makes fragrance, sold as Loewe Perfumes, and candles and diffusers under Loewe Home Scents.

What has changed under Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez

The designers' first Loewe collection, for spring 2026, coincided with the Amazona's 50th anniversary, and they brought the bag back as the Amazona 180. It hangs from a single top handle, is designed to be carried open with its zip top collapsing into a slouch, and carries a logo pared down from four interlocking Ls to two, as W magazine describes it. We covered their debut in our Loewe spring 2026 spotlight. For the 180th anniversary, the artist David Shrigley drew a lion, a nod to the name (Löwe is German for lion), which appears in beaded embroidery and leather intarsia across a capsule of the Amazona 180, the Flamenco, the Puzzle, the Hammock Flip and the Cala.

New shapes on Loewe's site this season include the Scarf bag, two panels tied together with a leather knot; the Bilbao, a trapeze-shaped bucket bag built around a central pleat; the Cala, with a handwoven leather handle; and the Whisker, a slouchy bag with a structural handle and a giant zip. The older families continue: the Flamenco, an archive design that W magazine dates to the 1980s, and Anderson's Puzzle, now in several versions, Hammock (joined by the Hammock Flip in 2025) and Squeeze.

The best Loewe bag for you: which to buy first

The best Loewe bag depends on how you carry. Start with the job it has to do.

  • Every day: Puzzle Edge Small. Three ways to carry, a structured shape that keeps its line, and room for a phone, a card case, keys and sunglasses.
  • Work: Amazona 180 in Medium or Large, or a Puzzle Fold tote in Medium. The Fold is by far the lighter at about a pound; Loewe lists the Large Amazona 180 at 2.7 pounds.
  • Evening: the Flamenco clutch in Mini or Medium, or the metallic version.
  • A softer everyday bag: the Squeeze in Small, which sits snugly under the arm, or a Hammock, which changes shape as its sides fold in and out.
  • Travel: the Puzzle Fold, which Loewe designs to fold completely flat and calls a perfect tote to travel with.
  • Light for its size: the Medium Flamenco purse, at 0.31 kilograms for a bag nearly 12 inches wide, and the Mini Hammock hobo, at 0.28 kilograms.

The Loewe Puzzle bag

Anderson "set out to find a new way of building a bag, fundamentally questioning its structure," as he put it when the Puzzle launched, and the result was a geometric, many-sided form meant, in his words, to be "a flat object with a tridimensional function." Loewe says the Puzzle can be worn as a shoulder bag, crossbody, tote, clutch or bum bag. Most of the current range falls into three branches:

  • Puzzle Edge, the structured version in classic or soft grained calfskin, which differs from the original in its overlapped panels with single stitch lines. Sizes run from Mini to Large.
  • Featherlight Puzzle, in supple nappa lambskin (with nubuck and suede versions) that makes the bag soft and slouchy. Loewe lists the Small at 0.50 kilograms against 0.52 for the Small Puzzle Edge in classic calfskin, so the difference is in the hand rather than on the scale; at Medium size the gap widens to 0.68 against 0.78 kilograms.
  • Puzzle Fold, the tote, which folds flat for packing. The Medium's handles have a 27-centimeter drop, and Loewe lists it for shoulder or hand carry.

Which size? The Mini (about 7 by 5 inches) holds a phone, cards and a lipstick. The Small (9.4 by 6.5 inches) is the everyday size; its top handle has a 7-centimeter drop, so it is a hand-carry handle, and the detachable strap adjusts from about 32 to 45 inches for the shoulder or across the body. The Medium (11.4 by 7.7 inches) suits days that include a book or a small umbrella, at about 1.7 pounds in classic calfskin. Tan and black are the easiest colors to wear every day; burgundy is this season's darker alternative.

  • Work: tan Small worn crossbody over a navy blazer, a white shirt and straight jeans.
  • Weekend: black Mini on its long strap with a trench coat and white sneakers.
  • Evening: burgundy Small carried by the top handle with a black knit dress.

The Loewe Amazona and Amazona 180

The Amazona was designed by Dario Rossi, named for the warrior women of Greek mythology and introduced in 1975, originally made in gold suede, as W magazine recounts. It was conceived as a softened briefcase without a rigid base, for a generation of women entering the workforce. The McCollough and Hernandez version, the Amazona 180, is the most relaxed yet: Loewe describes a single top handle, a concealed closure under the open top, and removable shoulder and crossbody straps. The short handle has an 11-centimeter drop on the Small, so plan to carry it by hand or use the straps. It comes in Mini, Small, Medium and Large, from 7.9 inches wide to 13.6.

The structured Amazona continues too, and its names are practical: the number is roughly the width in centimeters, so the Amazona 23 is 23 centimeters (9.1 inches) wide and the 28 is 28 centimeters, while the 31 is a long, narrow shoulder bag. Choose the 180 for a softer, more current look, and the 23 or 28 for the neater classic shape with its padlock. There's also an Amazona 180 in shearling, which pairs well with the coats in our guide to the best shearling coats.

  • Office: Medium Amazona 180 carried open by its handle, with grey tailoring and a cream knit.
  • Weekend: Mini Amazona 180 on its crossbody strap, a suede jacket and straight jeans.

The Loewe Flamenco

The Flamenco is older than it looks: W magazine dates the gathered pouch to the 1980s. Loewe describes the clutch as a soft and slouchy bag with a cinched closure and what the house calls historical knot drawstrings, and the Flamenco purse as a lightweight bag with a ruched shape and a donut chain. The clutch comes with a detachable strap, so the same bag works by hand, on the shoulder or across the body.

The Medium clutch (11.8 by 9.6 inches, about 1.1 pounds) is the classic. The Mini is the evening size and takes a phone, cards and keys; the Large is closer to a soft tote. Nappa is soft and marks easily, so keep keys in a small pouch rather than loose inside, and keep suede versions for dry days.

  • Evening: black Mini on its strap, a black slip dress and a long camel coat.
  • Weekend: tan Medium under the arm, straight jeans, a white shirt and loafers.

The Loewe Hammock

The Hammock's flexible sides fold in and out to change its silhouette, and a detachable, adjustable strap lets you carry it by hand, on the shoulder or across the body. It comes in several sizes, from the Compact up, plus a hobo that reworks the shape as a sling. The 2025 Hammock Flip uses what Loewe calls a stitched and turned construction, so it moves from a carry-all to a body-friendly hobo. Loewe lists the Small Hammock at 0.65 kilograms and the Mini hobo at 0.28 kilograms, among the lightest bags in this guide.

The Hammock suits women who carry more than a Puzzle holds but don't want a tote: a Small takes a day's essentials plus a scarf, and the sides can be folded in for a neater shape.

  • Commute: tan Small Hammock with its sides open, a camel coat, dark jeans and loafers; fold the sides in for a neater shape at dinner.
  • Weekend: ivory Hammock hobo across the body with a navy sweater and white jeans.

The Loewe Squeeze

The Squeeze is one of Anderson's later designs, first shown on the fall/winter 2023 runway: a bag in soft nappa with a ruched body, a squishy handle that gives the bag its name and a donut chain that adjusts, with an extension, so you can carry it by hand, on the shoulder or across the body. It comes in Small (11.4 by 9.4 inches, about 1.1 pounds) and Medium (13.4 by 13 inches, about 1.6 pounds). The Small is the better buy for most: the Medium is roomy but, like any unstructured bag, sags when half full.

  • Day: burgundy Small, a grey knit dress and a long navy coat.
  • Night: black Small on the chain, black trousers and a silk shirt.

New Loewe shapes: the Scarf, the Bilbao and the Cala

If you already own a Puzzle, the newer shapes are where Loewe is heading. The Scarf bag is two panels knotted together at the top, like a tied scarf, finished with a new, distorted take on the house's Pebble signature; the Medium measures 34 by 21 centimeters. The Bilbao is a trapeze bucket in smooth calfskin or calfskin and suede, pleated down the center. The Cala, which W magazine notes was introduced with the Paula's Ibiza collection in April 2026, has a handwoven leather handle and a removable tubular leather strap.

Loewe bags compared: sizes and weights

These are the key models in the sizes most people buy, with the measurements and weights Loewe listed on each product page on loewe.com in September 2026, in the leathers named; other materials can weigh slightly more or less, and Loewe can revise a listing. Dimensions are width by height by depth.

Squeeze (nappa lambskin)Medium13.4 × 13 × 5.30.72 kg (1.6 lb)

Two things stand out in Loewe's numbers. The Small Squeeze weighs the same 0.50 kilograms as the Small Featherlight Puzzle, though its listed dimensions are larger, so it carries more for the same weight. And the Amazona 180 is the heavyweight: the Large weighs 1.22 kilograms, more than twice the Medium Puzzle Fold tote, whose listed dimensions are only slightly smaller.

How to care for a Loewe bag

Loewe works in several leathers, and each wants slightly different handling.

  • Classic and grained calfskin (Puzzle Edge, Hammock): the sturdiest leathers here. Wipe with a soft, dry or barely damp cloth, and keep the bag filled with tissue in its dust bag so the panels hold their shape.
  • Nappa and mellow nappa (Flamenco, Squeeze, Featherlight Puzzle): soft and quick to mark. Keep pens and keys in a pouch or an inside pocket where the bag has one, and store the bag lying down rather than hanging by its handle or chain.
  • Suede (seasonal Amazona and Flamenco versions): brush with a soft brush, avoid rain, and take stains to a professional suede and leather cleaner rather than treating them at home.
  • Storage: a cool, dry, ventilated shelf, out of direct sun, never in a plastic bag. Puzzle Fold totes can be stored flat; everything else keeps its shape better stuffed.
