What to Wear to the Nutcracker: Matinees, Evening Curtains and Gala Nights

The short answer to what to wear to the Nutcracker: dress as you would for a good holiday dinner. That means a velvet, lace or silk midi dress, or a fine cashmere sweater with a satin skirt, worn with low heels or flats and a coat you can manage around a narrow theater seat. New York City Ballet, whose George Balanchine's The Nutcracker runs from November 27, 2026 to January 2, 2027 at the David H. Koch Theater, has no dress code, and it notes that some patrons dress very smartly while others choose to be more casual. That leaves the judgment with you.
Below, we break it down by performance (matinee, evening, and benefit or gala nights), cover what works for a family outing, and walk through the coat, shoe and bag logistics that most guides skip. The same thinking carries over to the ballet and the opera for the rest of the season, so we cover that too.
Is there a dress code for the Nutcracker?
No, not at New York City Ballet or San Francisco Ballet. New York City Ballet's policies and FAQs state that it has no dress code and advise dressing to your own comfort and style, with one exception: for galas and other special events, check your invitation for the requested attire. San Francisco Ballet, which stages its own Nutcracker at the War Memorial Opera House, says in its visitor FAQ that you will see some people in gowns and others in jeans. Its one clothing request is that hats come off indoors.
In practice, we pitch a Nutcracker outfit a notch above what the ticket requires. It is a holiday ritual, often the one afternoon or evening a family dresses up together, and one of the few performances where an adult in velvet and a six-year-old in a party dress look equally right. Our rule of thumb: dressier than the office, easier than black tie, and nothing you will need to adjust once the lights go down.
What to wear to the Nutcracker, performance by performance
The table below is our starting point for each kind of performance. The sections that follow go into fabrics, colors and the pieces we would buy.
| Performance | What we would wear | Fabrics | Shoes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Matinee with children | A knit dress, or cashmere with a silk skirt or tailored trousers | Cashmere, merino, silk crêpe | Ballet flats, loafers, low boots |
| Matinee with adults | Cashmere with a satin skirt, or a fine wool or silk day dress | Cashmere, satin, fine wool | Kitten heels, velvet loafers |
| Evening performance | A velvet, lace or silk midi dress, or a jewel-tone knit dress with some shine | Velvet, lace, crushed or draped silk, embellished knit | Suede kitten heels, satin flats |
| Benefit, opening or gala | Whatever the invitation says: cocktail length, or black tie if stated | Crêpe, cloqué, lace, sequined knit | Low evening heels (the stairs still apply) |
What to wear to an evening performance of the Nutcracker
Velvet is the most useful fabric for a December night at the ballet. It looks dressed without shine, it is warm on the walk from the car or the subway, and it has depth under lobby lighting that flat fabrics lack. Choose one that recovers from sitting: two hours in a theater seat will flatten any pile a little. Cotton velvet, like Max Mara's, is sturdier and marks less than a fluid silk-viscose velvet, and a stretch velvet springs back fastest. Whatever you wear, hang it in a steamy bathroom afterward.
Midi is the theater length. It sits properly when you are seated, still covers the knee when you cross your legs, and does not catch on stairs. A mini rides up once you sit, and floor length belongs to gala nights. Sleeves matter more than people expect: you will sit still for an hour at a stretch in a hall whose temperature you cannot control, so long or elbow sleeves beat a strapless dress with a wrap you keep rearranging. Alaïa's long-sleeved velvet dresses fit this brief, and so does Carolina Herrera's navy lace midi with balloon sleeves; lace is one of the few dressy fabrics that does not crease across the lap.
Plum, bottle green, midnight blue and burgundy are our Nutcracker palette: they read festive without looking like a costume, and they work with black tights and dark shoes. If you want red, go deep (claret, burgundy, garnet) rather than bright, as in Victoria Beckham's draped burgundy satin midi. For a little sparkle, put it where it moves: Carolina Herrera scatters sequins toward the hem of an otherwise plain plum knit dress, and Alaïa studs the skirt of a ruched black velvet midi with crystals.
- Midnight lace, navy on navy: a navy lace midi with balloon sleeves, sheer black tights, navy suede kitten heels and a burgundy satin clutch.
- Violet velvet and pearls: a long-sleeved violet velvet dress, pearl drops and black velvet loafers, which keep the climb to an upper ring easy.
- Sparkle at the hem: a plum knit dress with a sequined hem, opaque tights and satin ballet flats.
- Tonal burgundy: a draped burgundy satin midi, a Bordeaux kitten heel and a dark cape over the shoulders.

What to wear to a Nutcracker matinee, and with children
Matinees are the natural choice for families. NYCB recommends its production for ages 5 and up, and every patron needs a ticket, including a child who would otherwise sit on a lap. San Francisco Ballet does not admit children under 3 to the auditorium and asks that every child have a seat. Plan the outfit around two hours of sitting and an intermission spent in a crowded lobby.
Daylight changes the brief. Velvet and satin still work, but before 5 p.m. texture beats shine: cashmere, fine merino, crêpe and ribbed knits. The easiest matinee formula is a fine cashmere crewneck tucked into a silk or satin midi skirt. It looks polished in a lobby full of party dresses, and nothing about it suffers when a small person leans on you through the battle scene. A ribbed cashmere-silk sweater from Gabriela Hearst or a Loro Piana crewneck looks considered without competing with the stage, and Rabanne's navy lace-and-satin midi skirt gives the same sweater an evening finish.
For the children themselves, soft velvet, fine knits and tights are the classics. Skip anything scratchy: a two-hour performance is a long time to sit in an itchy sequined bodice. If you want a family photo at intermission, coordinate by color family (all jewel tones, or navy and cream) rather than matching outfits.
- Navy on navy: a navy cashmere crewneck, a navy lace-and-satin midi skirt, suede ballet flats and a cape.
- Bordeaux and black: a Bordeaux ribbed sweater, a black silk midi skirt and Bordeaux kitten heels.
- Ivory knit: an ivory knit dress, dark tights, knee boots for the walk and a camel coat.

What to wear to a Nutcracker gala, benefit or opening
Special performances are the exception to the no-dress-code rule. NYCB's Nutcracker Family Benefit on December 12, 2026 is a matinee followed by a holiday party on the theater's Promenade, and for galas and special events the company asks guests to follow the attire requested on the invitation.
If the invitation says cocktail, wear a dress that falls between the knee and mid-calf in crêpe, taffeta, lace, cloqué or a sequined knit, with the evening bag and heel you would wear to a holiday party; our guide to dressing for a cocktail party covers the details. If it says black tie, go floor-length or tea-length, and read how to dress for black-tie events. For a daytime benefit, color is the move: a clear red, an ivory wool with embroidered flowers or a silver jacquard looks celebratory at 2 p.m. in a way that head-to-toe sequins rarely does.
Mind a full skirt in a theater seat. Taffeta and cloqué hold volume beautifully standing up, but sit on a full skirt carelessly and it creases across the back. Smooth it under you as you sit, or choose a sheath. Sequins sewn onto a knit base, like Missoni's sequin-embellished ribbed knits, are softer and quieter in a seat than sequins on a stiff mesh.
- Daytime benefit: a long-sleeved red crêpe dress, pearl drops and black suede kitten heels.
- Ivory at 2 p.m.: an ivory wool dress with floral appliqué at the neckline, navy kitten heels and an emerald satin bag.
- Silver for the party: a silver cloqué cocktail dress, a black velvet cape and a crystal-buckle clutch.
- Evening gala, black tie: a long-sleeved black sequined knit maxi, a long camel coat and satin flats for the stairs.

Coats, the coat check and the theater seat
Coats are where most theater outfits go wrong. Seats at the David H. Koch Theater range from 19 to 23 inches wide, according to NYCB's accessibility page, which is not much room for a folded puffer on your lap. There is a coat check at Orchestra left, which the same page names as the place to borrow binoculars and listening devices, and there is no late seating at NYCB: latecomers wait for a pause or intermission. If you plan to check a coat, arrive early enough to stand in the line.
If you keep your coat, choose one that folds small or sits well on your shoulders in the seat. A cape is the most theater-friendly coat we know: there are no sleeves to wrestle with in a row of seated people, it goes over a full-sleeved dress without crushing it, and it drapes over the seat back instead of piling in your lap. Bottega Veneta's wool-and-cashmere capes and Max Mara's lightweight cashmere cape are the kind we mean. Carolina Herrera's charcoal wool cape, embroidered with roses at the hem, is the most festive of the group, and Givenchy's cropped wool-and-cashmere cape is the easiest of all to sit in; there are more in our edit of designer capes. A single-breasted car coat in a light wool and cashmere, such as The Row's, is the next best thing.
Dress for the auditorium, not the street. You cannot control how warm or cool the house runs, so keep a layer you can wear in the seat: a cape, a cashmere wrap, or a cardigan you are happy to keep on. If you are dressing from your own wardrobe, ask our AI stylist to build the look around your warmest good coat.
- Cape over velvet: a velvet dress under a midnight wool-and-cashmere cape, with gloves in the pockets.
- Car coat over knit: a ribbed knit dress under a black car coat, with a scarf that doubles as a wrap inside.

Shoes for theater stairs
Most seats are reached by stairs, and some by a lot of them. NYCB notes that many of its seats require going up or down at least one step, and that the Fourth and Fifth Rings have steep stairs. In the dark, after two hours in a seat, that is no place for a 110mm stiletto.
The heel we like for the ballet is 35mm to 55mm with a pointed toe, which keeps the evening line of a pump with the footing of a flat. Manolo Blahnik's 50mm suede kitten heels and Roger Vivier's low pumps are the benchmark; our edit of designer pumps has more. Velvet loafers and satin ballet flats are the other good answers, and both read as evening in a way sneakers never will. On a wet December night, wear boots for the walk and change into your evening shoes before you check your coat.
- One color, shoe to hem: navy suede kitten heels with a navy lace or velvet dress, which lengthens the leg.
- Velvet loafers: black velvet loafers with a silk skirt and sheer tights, for the upper rings.

Bags and jewelry that suit a theater seat
San Francisco Ballet asks that bags fit under the seat or on your lap (roughly 14 by 14 by 6 inches) and sends anything larger, shopping bags included, to the coat check. That is a sensible rule for any theater, and we go smaller still: a clutch or a small top-handle bag that holds a phone, tickets, a lipstick and a card. Skip long metal chains that knock against the seat in quiet passages, and stacked bangles for the same reason. The clutch bags we like most for the ballet are satin, which is soft, silent and reads as evening even at a matinee.
The Nutcracker is a pearls occasion. Pearls suit velvet and cashmere equally, and they look right at a 2 p.m. matinee, where diamonds can feel like too much before dark. Mikimoto's Akoya pearl drops, hung from a slim line of diamonds, work day or night; for more ideas, see our guide to how to wear pearls.
- Burgundy and pearl: a burgundy satin clutch and pearl drops with a plum dress.
- Green on green: an emerald satin top-handle bag with bottle-green velvet and pearl drops.
- Navy and crystal: a navy satin clutch with a crystal spray and a navy lace midi.

What to wear to the ballet or the opera for the rest of the season
The Nutcracker rules carry over. The Metropolitan Opera says it has no dress code and recommends comfortable clothing appropriate for a professional setting, adding that attendees tend to dress more formally for galas and new-production openings, though that is optional. Three adjustments help for other nights:
- Operas often run longer, so favor fabrics that do not crease at the hip after hours of sitting: wool crêpe, jersey, fine knits.
- Repertory ballet evenings are less festive, so drop the sequins and keep the velvet, or wear tailored trousers with a silk blouse.
- Opening nights and galas follow the invitation, as they do at the Nutcracker.
Whatever the performance, dress quietly in the literal sense. Taffeta rustles, a sequined skirt scrapes against a velvet seat, and stacked bangles carry in a hushed house. NYCB also prohibits the use of phones during performances, so keep yours in your bag rather than your lap. The best theater outfit is one you forget you are wearing once the curtain rises.
How we chose
Everything in this Nutcracker edit comes from a top luxury house and was live, in stock and at full price when we selected it, with most styles offered in several sizes. We favored midi lengths that sit well in a theater seat, fabrics that survive two hours of sitting (cotton and stretch velvet, lace, draped satin, cashmere, knit-backed sequins), sleeves over strapless for warmth, heels of 55mm or less for stairs, and bags small enough to fit on a lap. Prices run from about $475 for pearl earrings to about $6,150 for a wool-and-cashmere cape; we checked every product image for color and silhouette.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a dress code for the Nutcracker?
No. New York City Ballet has no dress code and advises dressing for your own comfort and style, except at galas and special events, where you follow the invitation. San Francisco Ballet is equally relaxed and only asks that hats come off indoors.
Can you wear jeans to the ballet?
Yes; San Francisco Ballet says you will see jeans alongside gowns. If you do, make the rest of the outfit evening: dark, clean denim with a silk blouse or fine cashmere, a velvet loafer or kitten heel, and a small satin bag.
What should children wear to the Nutcracker?
Something soft they can sit in for two hours: velvet, fine knits and tights, with flat shoes. NYCB recommends the production for ages 5 and up and requires a ticket for every child, including lap children; San Francisco Ballet does not admit children under 3.
What should I wear to the opera?
The Metropolitan Opera has no dress code and recommends comfortable clothing appropriate for a professional setting. We would wear a wool crêpe or jersey dress, or tailored trousers with a silk blouse, and dress up further for galas and openings.
What shoes should I wear to the Nutcracker?
A heel of 55mm or less, a velvet loafer or a satin ballet flat. Many seats are reached by stairs, and NYCB's Fourth and Fifth Rings have steep ones.
How early should I arrive?
Early enough to check a coat and find your seat before curtain. NYCB has no late seating, so latecomers wait for a pause or intermission.
