The Best Work Bags for Women, Chosen Around the Laptop You Carry

Start with the laptop: the best work bags for women are sized to it first and chosen for style second. Our rule is simple: measure the laptop, then look for a tote at least two inches wider than it and an inch taller than it is deep, with a zip or clasp, handles long enough to sit on your shoulder over a coat, and a weight you can carry to the train and back. For a 13- or 14-inch MacBook that means a bag 14 to 14.5 inches wide; for a 15-inch, 15.5 inches; for a 16-inch, 16.5 inches or more. A structured leather tote protects a laptop you carry every day, a soft leather or suede tote suits lighter days, and nylon or coated canvas is the one for long walks and rain. Below, we give Apple's laptop dimensions and the bag each one needs, then cover structure, weight, closures, straps and leather care, with the designer laptop totes, zip-top work totes and professional handbags we would buy.
What size work bag fits your laptop?
Ranked by the number of people asking, work was the fourth most common occasion typed into our AI stylist in the 12 months to late September 2026, after everyday dressing, parties and dinners. For a work bag the first question is simple: will the laptop fit? Apple publishes exact dimensions for its laptops, so there is no need to guess. The table gives Apple's figures and, in the last column, the smallest bag we would buy for each: our rule of the laptop's width plus two inches and its depth plus one, rounded up to the next half inch.
| Laptop | Apple's dimensions (width × depth × thickness) | Weight | Our minimum bag size |
|---|---|---|---|
| MacBook Neo (13-inch) | 11.71 × 8.12 × 0.50 in | 2.7 lb | 14 in wide, 9.5 in tall |
| 13-inch MacBook Air | 11.97 × 8.46 × 0.44 in | 2.7 lb | 14 in wide, 9.5 in tall |
| 14-inch MacBook Pro | 12.31 × 8.71 × 0.61 in | 3.4 to 3.6 lb | 14.5 in wide, 10 in tall |
| 15-inch MacBook Air | 13.40 × 9.35 × 0.45 in | 3.3 lb | 15.5 in wide, 10.5 in tall |
| 16-inch MacBook Pro | 14.01 × 9.77 × 0.66 in | 4.7 lb | 16.5 in wide, 11 in tall |
Laptop figures come from Apple's specification pages for the MacBook Air, the MacBook Pro and the MacBook Neo; the 14-inch Pro's weight depends on its chip. For another brand of laptop, find the width and depth on the maker's specification page and apply the same rule.
How to read a bag's dimensions
- Why two inches and one. A listing's measurements usually describe the outside of the bag, and the leather, lining and seams take up room inside. The extra width also leaves space for your hand as you slide the laptop in and out. The margin is our rule of thumb, not a house's figure, so when a listing says a bag "fits a laptop," check which laptop it means.
- Check the width where the laptop will sit. Many totes flare toward the opening, so a bag can be noticeably narrower at the base than its listed width. If the photographs show a sharp taper, the laptop will ride at an angle, higher in the bag.
- A zip needs clearance. On a zip-top tote the laptop has to sit completely below the zip, so do not cut the extra inch of height.
- Tall, narrow totes work sideways. A north-south tote holds a 13-inch MacBook Air standing on its short edge if the bag is at least 13 inches tall and 10.5 inches wide: the same rule, turned on its side.
- Measure the sleeve, not the laptop. A padded sleeve adds thickness on every side; if you carry one, apply the rule to the sleeve.
Structured or soft: choosing the best work bags for women
The shape of a tote decides how it treats a laptop. A structured tote is built from firm leather, sometimes over a stiffened base, and often stands on metal feet. It keeps its shape when empty, stands upright under a desk or a restaurant table, and keeps the laptop's corners off your hip. The cost is extra weight and a more formal look. A soft tote is lighter, folds into a suitcase and drapes against the body, but the laptop becomes its structure: it slumps when half empty, and small things sink to the bottom. Choose structure if the laptop comes with you most days or you see clients; choose soft if you carry a laptop now and then and value a lighter bag.
Structured leather totes
Look for a flat base with protective feet, handles that stand up on their own, a zip pocket or divided interior for keys and cards, and a detachable strap for the commute. Gabriela Hearst's squared nappa totes open onto a central zip pocket between two compartments, which keeps a laptop apart from a notebook and a water bottle. Jil Sander's large totes in hammered calfskin have long twin handles that sit well on the shoulder. Bottega Veneta weaves its large totes from strips of leather and pairs a top handle with an adjustable shoulder strap. Tom Ford's grained-leather totes add an adjustable strap across the opening, and Balenciaga's structured city totes combine brass feet, a front zip pocket and a detachable strap.
- Client meeting: navy trouser suit, ivory silk shirt, a cognac structured tote and black loafers. The warm brown lifts navy without competing with it.
- Winter commute: charcoal wool coat, grey knit dress and black knee boots, with a black tote worn on the shoulder over the coat.
- Creative office: dark straight jeans, a white shirt under a camel blazer and a black woven-leather tote.

Soft leather and suede totes
A soft tote reads as relaxed rather than casual when the leather is good and the shape is plain. Saint Laurent's shopping totes are the simplest version, two flat handles and a tab across the top, and its larger soft totes in grained calfskin come lined in suede with a hook to close the opening. Valentino Garavani's chevron-patterned nappa tote is wide enough for a 16-inch laptop, Tod's suede shopping totes stand on metal feet, and Prada makes a large, soft tote in deer leather. Because a soft tote has no internal support, carry the laptop in a padded sleeve and keep small things in a zip pouch so the bag does not collapse around them. Leave suede at home on wet days.
- Weekday: black soft tote, black turtleneck, grey wool wide-leg trousers and black loafers.
- Friday: camel suede tote, cream cable-knit, dark indigo jeans and brown suede boots.
- Tonal: a dark beige leather tote with an oatmeal knit dress and a camel coat.

How heavy is a work bag with a laptop inside?
The laptop is the heaviest thing in the bag. Apple lists the 13-inch MacBook Air and the MacBook Neo at 2.7 pounds, the 15-inch Air at 3.3, the 14-inch MacBook Pro at 3.4 to 3.6 and the 16-inch Pro at 4.7. Add a charger, a notebook, a water bottle, keys and a wallet, and the bag's own weight comes on top of all of it, carried on one shoulder. Few houses publish a tote's empty weight, so note it when a retailer does: one large grained-leather tote we chose for this guide is listed at 1.6 pounds empty, which with a 16-inch MacBook Pro inside puts more than six pounds on your shoulder before the charger goes in. Otherwise, judge the weight by the build.
- What adds weight: stiff leather, full leather or suede linings, metal feet, heavy hardware, chain straps and detachable pouches.
- What saves it: nylon, unlined leather and soft leather without a stiffened base.
- Do not assume canvas is light. Dense cotton canvas with leather trim can weigh as much as a soft leather tote. Its advantage is that it copes with weather and scuffs.
- Carry the load well. Wide, flat straps spread the weight better than thin ones. Switch shoulders on the walk, and if you can, keep a second charger at the office.
If you walk a long way or carry a 15- or 16-inch laptop, nylon saves the most weight. Coated canvas, such as Burberry's check, and leather-trimmed canvas are the materials for rain: wipe them down and they recover, where pale leather would mark.
- Rainy commute: khaki nylon tote, navy trench, a grey crewneck, straight black trousers and rubber-soled loafers.
- Summer office: ecru canvas tote with brown leather trim, a white shirt dress and tan sandals.

Closures and security: work totes for the subway and the train
An open tote is fine from the car to the desk. On a subway or bus, choose a closure you can hold shut. In order of security: a zip top, then a clasp, hook or toggle, then a magnetic snap, then an open top. WMATA's safety advice for Washington's Metrorail and Metrobus riders is to use a purse with a secure clasp, keep it close to your body with your hand on the clasp, and keep a firm grip without wrapping the strap around your hand or wrist. It also suggests not standing near the rail car doors, where you are more likely to be crowded or bumped.
- Wear it in front on a crowded train, with the zip or clasp against your body.
- Use the pockets. An inside zip pocket takes keys, cards and a passport; an outside slip pocket takes the transit card you use twice a day, so the main compartment stays closed.
- Add a zip pouch to an open tote. Many soft totes include one. Keep your wallet and phone in it.
- Think about the floor. Metal feet and dark colors hide the wear of train floors and pavements; pale suede and ivory leather show it.
- Check the weather. Grained leather, nylon and coated canvas cope with a wet walk; suede does not.
If the tote doubles as your cabin bag on work trips, check your airline's rules. Delta, for example, allows each passenger one carry-on bag and one personal item, such as a purse or laptop bag, that fits under the seat in front. Our guide to packing for business travel covers the rest of the suitcase.
- Train commute: a burgundy suede zip-top tote worn in front, a camel coat, a black turtleneck, dark jeans and flat boots.
- Airport to meeting: a check zip tote, navy knit blazer, white T-shirt, black trousers and white leather sneakers.

Handles, straps and how you will carry it
The handle drop, the distance from the top of the handle to the opening of the bag, decides where a bag can sit. As a rule of thumb:
- Under about 5 inches: carry it in your hand or the crook of your arm. It looks polished walking into a meeting and grows tiring with a laptop inside.
- About 8 to 10 inches: it sits on the shoulder over a blazer or a sweater.
- More than 10 inches, or an adjustable strap: it goes over a winter coat.
The best work totes give you two ways to carry: top handles for walking into a room, and shoulder straps or a detachable strap for the commute. A long strap is worth having on any tote you carry through airports. If you want your phone and cards on your body while the laptop rides in the tote, add a small crossbody bag; our guide to the best designer crossbody bags has the ones that sit well under a coat.
Leather, suede, nylon or canvas: what survives office life
| Material | How it wears | In rain | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grained or pebbled calfskin | Texture hides small scratches | Copes with light rain; wipe it dry | The everyday laptop tote |
| Cross-hatched calfskin (Saffiano) | Stiff and hard to scratch; holds a structured shape | Wipes clean | Structured totes for client-facing days |
| Smooth calfskin and nappa | Soft and polished; shows scuffs and develops a patina | Wipe water off at once | Top-handle bags and lighter days |
| Suede | Soft and matte; marks and darkens when wet | Keep it at home | Dry days |
| Woven leather | Soft and flexible | Wipe it dry | Soft totes |
| Nylon | The lightest; wipes clean | Good | Walking commutes and travel |
| Coated canvas | Resists scuffs and stains | Good | Commuting and travel |
How to care for a leather work bag
Hermès's leather care instructions are written for its own pieces, but the hazards they name are the ones a work bag meets every day, so we have followed them here and said where the advice is ours.
- Water: Hermès says to wipe it off at once with a soft, lint-free cloth, which prevents stains and blisters.
- Ink, makeup, perfume and alcohol-based products: Hermès lists all four among the things that can leave permanent marks on leather. Keep pens in a case and cosmetics in a zip pouch; in a work bag that matters more than anywhere else.
- Dark and raw textiles: Hermès warns that repeated contact with them can have undesirable effects on lighter leather. Dark denim rubbing at the hip against an ivory tote is exactly that contact.
- Overloading: Hermès advises against overloading a bag or putting irregularly shaped objects inside, to preserve its shape. A laptop and a charger brick are both, so give them a sleeve and a pouch.
- Heat and light: Hermès notes that prolonged exposure to intense light and heat, such as a sunny window or a radiator, may alter the color.
- Storage: between uses, Hermès recommends a temperate, dry place away from light, ideally in the bag's box or dust cover, with tissue paper or bubble wrap inside, the zips closed and the straps attached. It advises against anti-humidity sachets, which dry leather out.
For stains, take the bag to the house or a leather specialist rather than experimenting with products at home.
The professional handbag: when the laptop stays at the office
On days of meetings without a laptop, a structured top-handle bag looks sharper than a half-empty tote. Look for a firm shape that holds a phone, a wallet, glasses, keys and a slim notebook, a top handle you can carry into a room and a detachable strap for the walk there. Givenchy's structured top-handle bags have the crisp, architectural lines of a briefcase; Ferragamo's softer take on a structured satchel, The Row's roomy leather top-handles, Max Mara's doctor's-bag shapes and Victoria Beckham's frame bags all do the same job with different formality. For the rest of the outfit, see our business casual outfit examples and our guide to winter work outfits.
- Presentation day: black top-handle bag, black tailored trousers, a cream fine-knit sweater and black pumps.
- Dinner after work: charcoal top-handle bag with a charcoal suit, a white shirt and gold earrings.
- Conference: taupe structured bag, camel trousers, a navy crewneck and loafers; our guide on what to wear to a work conference plans the rest of the week.

How we chose
We considered only houses on Vêtir's luxury list, and only bags that were new, in stock and available for US delivery when we chose them; there are no pre-owned pieces. For the tote edits we favored bags whose makers or stockists publish dimensions, and most of our totes are listed at 14 inches wide or more, enough for a 13-inch MacBook Air by the rule above; where a listing gives no measurements, check it against the table before you buy. We looked for closures that suit a commute, pockets that keep keys and cards separate, more than one way to carry, and materials that cope with daily wear, and we spread the picks across houses and price points. When a bag sells out, its edit refills with new stock from a set list of houses, in the same shape and price band.
Frequently asked questions
What size tote fits a 13-inch laptop?
By our rule, a tote listed at least 14 inches wide and 9.5 inches tall. Apple's 13-inch MacBook Air measures 11.97 by 8.46 inches, and the extra room covers the lining, the seams and your hand. For a 14-inch MacBook Pro, look for at least 14.5 by 10 inches.
What is the best work bag for a 16-inch MacBook Pro?
A tote at least 16.5 inches wide and 11 inches tall, with shoulder straps. Apple lists the 16-inch MacBook Pro at 14.01 by 9.77 inches and 4.7 pounds, so choose a light nylon tote or a leather tote with wide, flat straps.
Is a tote bag professional enough for the office?
Yes, in plain leather or suede with a closure and little visible branding. For client meetings choose a structured shape in black, brown, navy or taupe, and save logo canvas and very slouchy shapes for less formal days.
What is the most durable leather for a work bag?
Grained or pebbled calfskin, whose texture hides scratches, or a stiff cross-hatched leather such as Saffiano. Smooth leather marks more easily and suede is for dry days. For rain, nylon and coated canvas are the most forgiving.
Should a work bag have a zip?
If you commute by train or bus, or leave the bag under a desk in a shared office, yes. A zip top is the most secure closure, a clasp or hook comes next, and a magnetic snap keeps a bag neat but opens easily. An open tote works if valuables go in a zip pouch inside.
Can a work tote be my personal item when I fly?
Usually, if it fits under the seat in front of you. Delta, for example, allows each passenger one carry-on bag and one personal item such as a purse or laptop bag. Check your airline's limits before you travel.
