The Best Knit Dresses for Winter: Cashmere, Ribbed, Polo and Evening Knits

The best knit dresses for winter are wool, cashmere or a blend led by one of them, knitted densely enough to skim the body rather than cling, with long sleeves (or a plan for layering) and a hem at or below the knee. A fine gauge suits the office; a rib gives you shape; a cable or brushed cashmere does the work of a sweater and a skirt at once. Fiber decides warmth and drape, the stitch decides cling, and the size decides whether the dress still looks right after you sit down.

Below: how to read a knit dress before you buy it, how to stop it clinging, what to wear under it, and which boots and coat suit it. Then nine edits from Gabriela Hearst, ALAÏA, Max Mara, Brunello Cucinelli, Tom Ford and more.

How to choose knit dresses for winter: fiber, stitch and weight

A knit dress puts more yarn against more of you than a sweater does, and it has to hang from the shoulders all day without growing. Three lines on a listing tell you more than the photograph: the composition, the stitch and the weight.

Fiber: what each one does in a dress

FiberHow it wearsWatch forBest for

Merino deserves more credit than it gets in a market led by cashmere. The Woolmark Company puts merino at generally less than 22 microns across, against 50 to 100 for a human hair, and says some ultrafine merino is finer than cashmere. US labeling law allows the word cashmere only when the fiber averages 19 microns or less (our guide to cashmere sweaters explains the rest of the definition). In a dress, merino springs back at the seat and costs less, which is why half of our picks under $1,500 are merino or a merino blend.

Rib, jersey or compact: the stitch decides the cling

Pratt Institute's Textile Research Lab notes that rib knits stretch significantly more across their width than jersey, with excellent recovery, and it recommends rib for cuffs, collars and waistbands. In a dress, a rib follows every curve: flattering when you want the body to show, unforgiving over a waistband. Interlock, a double knit, is thicker, more stable and less stretchy than jersey, according to the same lab. When a listing says "compact knit", as Neiman Marcus does for the Tom Ford and Alexander McQueen jacquards below, expect a dense, closely knitted cloth rather than an open one.

For a dress you will sit in for hours, look for interlock, double jersey or a dense flat knit: the listing for Max Mara's short wool-and-cashmere dress describes a 12-gauge, one-ply interlock, and its sweatshirt dress is pure wool double jersey. For shape, choose a rib with a little elastane or polyamide so the shape survives dinner. For texture without cling, a heavy cable stands slightly away from the body.

Weight and gauge

A fine gauge shows everything beneath it, seams and slip edges included: pinch a single layer at the hip, and if you can see your fingers through it, plan a slip. A heavy knit adds bulk at the hip and needs a roomier coat. The listing for TOTEME's pure wool cable dress calls it heavyweight; Tom Ford's long crewneck dress goes the other way, pairing a featherweight cashmere-silk with a mid-gauge cotton-cashmere, partly lined, with a sheer back.

Cling, fit and sizing

A knit dress clings for three reasons: the stitch stretches and pulls back, the yarn is so fine it shows what is under it, or static, the cling you notice most in December.

Static starts when two materials rub and one gives up charge to the other. Triboelectric series rank materials by which way that goes, and published series disagree on details, but in several of the lists collected by the University of Iowa's physics department, nylon, wool and silk sit near the positive end, cotton lower down, and polyester, acetate and rayon near the negative end. Materials far apart on a series are generally expected to build more charge against each other, so a wool dress over a polyester slip, or under an acetate-lined coat, is the pairing most likely to crackle. On those lists silk sits close to wool and cotton lies between, so either makes the safer slip. Dry, heated air makes static worse.

Four checks before you keep a knit dress:

  • The rib test. Look at the ribs across your hips and bust. They should run straight and parallel; if they fan open and show the channels between them, the dress is a size too small for the look you want.
  • The sitting test. Sit for two minutes, then stand. Wool with a touch of elastane springs back; a loose viscose or cotton knit keeps the shape of the chair.
  • The length check. Neiman Marcus, Bergdorf Goodman and Saks list their models at 5 feet 10 on most of these dresses, so a midi falls lower on most people than in the picture.
  • The size notes. They can disagree. Gabriela Hearst's own listings say its Seymore fits true to size; Neiman Marcus's listing for the navy Seymore in our under-$1,500 edit says it runs small and suggests a size up. Measure your hips and bust against the house's chart.

Between sizes, buy a fitted rib for your larger measurement and a relaxed sweater dress for the smaller, because a loose knit relaxes with wear. A belt, like the leather one on Brunello Cucinelli's cashmere dress or the one that comes with Gabriela Hearst's Meier, waists a straight knit without a tailor.

What to wear under a knit dress

  • A slip. A half slip stops a midi skirt catching on tights; a full slip under a fine, pointelle or lace knit stops it showing what is beneath. Choose silk or cotton, in your skin tone or the dress color. Brunello Cucinelli's lace-flower mohair dress comes with a removable slip.
  • Smooth underwear. Seamless briefs and a molded bra under any rib; a backless bra or adhesive cups under halter and open-back columns.
  • A fine knit under a sleeveless or short-sleeved dress. Gabriela Hearst's Lady Hall maxi is sleeveless and Proenza Schouler's Abie has short sleeves; both look deliberate over a fine turtleneck. Keep the knit underneath finer than the dress, in the same color or one shade darker.
  • Tights in the right weight. Sheer with a fine knit at night, opaque with a chunky one by day; our holiday dress guide sets out a denier scale. Tights the color of your boots make the longest line.

The best cashmere knit dresses

A cashmere dress in a plain cut is the knit dress to buy once and keep. Gabriela Hearst's Uriel is pure brushed cashmere with a fitted bodice, bell sleeves and a maxi skirt. Brunello Cucinelli's belted dress is pure cashmere in stockinette stitch with a V-neck, and its listing allows a careful hand wash. Burberry's Cassidy, slim cashmere jersey with 1 percent elastane, a mock neck and three buttons at the shoulder, is the plainest here, and its short sleeves sit easily under a coat. Magda Butrym's charcoal turtleneck mini is ribbed pure cashmere with a skirt that flares from the hips, and Khaite's Norla is a funnel-neck silk-cashmere jersey with raw edges, cut to drape.

Gabriela Hearst's Lady Hall is the one for evening: a plush cashmere-silk, sleeveless with a V-neck, close through the body and fluid to the ankle.

Cashmere's weakness is friction. The Woolmark Company names elbows, armpits, sleeves, belly and sides as the usual places pills form and says long periods of sitting at a desk raise the risk; on a dress, add the seat. Carry your bag in the hand rather than on the shoulder.

  • Charcoal ribbed mini, charcoal opaque tights, burgundy leather knee boots, a long gray coat.
  • Navy cashmere maxi with gray suede knee boots and an ivory coat.
  • Ivory cashmere-silk maxi over a fine ivory turtleneck, chocolate suede boots, a camel coat.
  • Black brushed-cashmere maxi, black knee boots, silver earrings, nothing at the neck.

Sweater dresses: crewnecks, turtlenecks and cape sleeves

The sweater dress is the most forgiving knit dress. Decide two things, length and waist. A mini sweater dress needs opaque tights and a boot to read as winter; a midi needs either a waist (a belt, a flare, a seam) or one long, straight line from shoulder to hem.

Max Mara's sweater dress is 70 percent wool and 30 percent cashmere with suede panels and a lining; its short dress in the same blend is the fine interlock mentioned above, with kimono sleeves that taper at the cuff. Givenchy's navy mini has a structured high neck, a high-low hem and a slashed open back: a dinner dress, not an office one. Zimmermann's Valiant is merino with a mock neck and buttoned cape sleeves, and TOTEME's cable is pure wool. Brunello Cucinelli's taupe half-zip, 60 percent wool, 30 percent cashmere and 10 percent silk, is ribbed and cut loose; Gabriela Hearst's Seymore is a wool, cashmere and silk knit with short sleeves and an A-line skirt; and Proenza Schouler's Abie is a Donegal-flecked wool with a mock neck.

  • Camel cape-sleeve dress, chocolate suede knee boots, a cream coat.
  • Navy slashed-back mini, navy opaque tights, gray suede knee boots.
  • Charcoal cable maxi, black lug-sole boots, a long gray coat.
  • Bordeaux mini, burgundy leather boots, a camel coat.

Ribbed knit dresses

A ribbed knit dress is the one with a figure: the vertical lines lengthen the body and it looks finished with nothing added.

Prada's midi is 100 percent virgin wool in a shade Prada calls cacao, so dark that it reads as black. Alexander McQueen's is pure wool, close-fitting, with a fluted, ruffled hem. ALAÏA's two minis are wool with a little polyamide and elastane: one sleeveless and flared in a blue-gray so deep it looks almost navy (ALAÏA calls it gris bleu), one taupe with a mock neck and short sleeves. Proenza Schouler's Abie maxi uses a speckled Donegal yarn ruched at the waist; its orange Rosario (the listing says red) widens its ribs below the hips. Gabriela Hearst's Meier is a sleeveless wool-cashmere rib with a belt, and Bottega Veneta's wool mini is a sleeveless A-line rib for wearing over a turtleneck.

  • The near-black Prada rib midi, black opaque tights, black knee boots, a long gray coat.
  • The deep blue-gray ALAÏA mini over a fine navy turtleneck, navy tights, black knee boots.
  • Orange Rosario maxi, an ivory coat, burgundy boots.

The polo dress and the knit shirtdress

A collar and placket turn a knit dress into something you can wear to a meeting. Gabriela Hearst makes the reference version: Net-a-Porter's listing describes its Ardor as almost identical to the house's Amor apart from the longer sleeves, in a soft rib of cashmere and silk. The house's Tenes is a cashmere-silk shirtdress in a heavier rib with brass belt hardware, and Tom Ford's polo-collared maxi is pure cashmere with a partly buttoned front.

More casual: ALAÏA's polo is a piqué, the stitch of a tennis shirt, in viscose and polyamide; Casablanca's, from its fall-winter 2026 collection, is cotton and wool with pearl buttons; Zimmermann's Mouline is a marled rib in 100 percent viscose. Etro knits its polo dress to the ankle in viscose and wool, and Proenza Schouler's Rosario is 100 percent merino with a drop waist.

The knit midi dress for the office

For work, choose a knit midi dress with a collar or crew neck, sleeves to the wrist, a hem below the knee and a gauge fine enough to sit under a jacket; try the two together, since a knit sleeve bunches inside a slim tailored one. Our winter work outfits and work outfit ideas cover the rest of the week.

  • Black cashmere-silk polo dress, black tights, black knee boots with a buckle at the ankle, a gray coat.
  • Bordeaux knit shirtdress, gray suede knee boots, a charcoal coat.
  • Chocolate cashmere polo maxi, a camel coat, burgundy boots for a weekend lunch.
  • Cream-and-navy striped polo mini, navy tights, burgundy boots.

The knit column for evening

A long knit column is one of the warmest ways to dress up in winter: it packs without creasing and needs no tights. Tom Ford's black maxi is 69 percent cashmere and 29 percent silk, and its halter column is a rib flecked with Lurex. Balmain knits its halter maxi in what the listing calls smooth Milano jersey, with a detachable collar of gold-tone beads. ALAÏA's crimson column is pure wool with ribbed cuffs, and its open-back maxi is finely ribbed wool with a high halter. Givenchy's sapphire halter is lightweight wool with a draped cowl, and Missoni's trumpet maxi is a dégradé viscose lamé, for New Year's Eve rather than dinner. Gabriela Hearst's Kurt breaks the column: extrafine merino, off the shoulder, with pointelle pleats that open over a floral print as you walk and a horsebit belt at the waist.

For black tie, choose floor length plus shine (lamé, Lurex or beading) and an evening shoe; boots are for the walk there. The coat should be longer than the column or end at the waist.

  • Crimson wool column, gold earrings, black satin pumps, a long black coat.
  • Sapphire halter, silver sandals, a long ivory coat.
  • Black cashmere-silk maxi, a velvet clutch and diamond studs for a dinner that runs late.

Texture and pattern: jacquard, crochet, lace and fringe

Many patterned knit dresses are compact jacquards built on viscose: Tom Ford's lynx jacquard is viscose with nylon, polyamide and polyester, Alexander McQueen's flower jacquard is viscose and polyester, and Oscar de la Renta's navy floral is 70 percent viscose. Viscose holds a print crisply but is not as warm as wool, so treat these as cocktail dresses. For pattern in a warmer fiber, Brunello Cucinelli knits a Prince of Wales check into alpaca and wool (54 and 30 percent, with nylon) for a high-neck sleeveless mini. Its lace-flower dress is an open net of nylon, mohair and wool shot with lamé thread.

Texture can do the work of pattern. Missoni's crochet column works its zigzag with metallic fibers and sequins, Loewe trims a wool-blend maxi with fringe at the neck and hem, and Zimmermann's Valiant Deco runs bold stripes across ribbed jersey. Wear one pattern at a time and keep the boots and coat plain. Buy the jacquards and the lamé for this winter's parties; buy a plain cashmere column or a dark rib to keep.

  • Lynx jacquard midi, black knee boots, a black coat.
  • Navy floral jacquard, navy tights, gray suede boots, pearl studs.
  • Lead-gray lace-mohair dress over its slip, charcoal tights, black ankle-strap boots.

The knit set: a skirt and sweater that read as one dress

A knit set does what a sweater dress does, but you can buy different sizes top and bottom and wear the pieces apart. Pieces in the same yarn and shade read as one garment. Gabriela Hearst says its May turtleneck is made to pair with its Freddie skirt in the same black merino and cashmere. Max Mara's belted skirt and turtleneck are both pure cashmere in the color the house calls Bruciato, a burnt red-brown, and Kirna Zabete lists Proenza Schouler's Monet skirt and top as a coordinating pair in a fine bobble knit.

Two single skirts finish the edit, for a sweater you own: ALAÏA's ivory wool-cashmere midi, ribbed and flared, and The Row's Jovan, a pure cashmere maxi with an elasticated waist. To make a set read as a dress, tuck a fitted top in at the natural waist; to read as separates, wear the sweater loose. For a long seated meal, a knit skirt with an easy waist is the comfortable choice; our Thanksgiving outfit ideas cover the rest of the table for Thursday, November 26.

The best knit dresses under $1,500

Below $1,500, pure cashmere dresses are rare; merino, wool and wool-silk do the work. TOTEME's turtleneck midi is a fluid wool and silk with ties at the waist. Jacquemus's Castagna is a merino-blend turtleneck with structured shoulders, and Isabel Marant's Alexane is ultrafine merino with a two-way zip and vertical ribs. Max Mara's sweatshirt dress is pure wool double jersey with a half zip, and the navy Seymore described above sits here too. Proenza Schouler's Lothea is a merino blend, one-shouldered and long; Zimmermann's Valiant has a tiered skirt edged in lace.

Isabel Marant's Jozira is 70 percent viscose and 30 percent wool: soft and drapey, but less warm than the merino beside it, so better for a heated office than a walk across town.

Which boots and coat to wear with a knit dress

With a knit midi, the boot sets the line of the hem and rubs against the knit all day.

  • Shaft shape. A slim, smooth shaft lets a knit hem fall straight over it; a wide shaft pushes the hem out, which suits a full skirt and spoils a column.
  • Hardware. A buckle or clasp at the top of the shaft rubs where a midi hem moves, and a loose knit will pill or snag there. Givenchy's Pinch and Prada's suede boot carry theirs at the top, so wear them with minis and long skirts; under a midi, choose a clean shaft or hardware at the ankle, like Christian Louboutin's Dianouchette or Valentino's Pattie.
  • Heel. A flat or low block heel suits sweater dresses; a high, pointed boot such as Saint Laurent's Capucine or Aquazzura's Harper sharpens a rib or a column.
  • Color. Our stylists wear black boots with black, charcoal, gray, ivory, red or navy knits, and gray suede with navy, charcoal, ivory or burgundy. Burgundy boots suit gray, charcoal, cream and camel. Espresso and chocolate boots (Ferragamo, Prada) go with camel, cream, oatmeal, gray, burgundy or olive, and our stylists keep them away from black and navy.

For the coat, leave room in the sleeve: a raglan, dropped-shoulder or cape cut stops a knit sleeve bunching at the elbow. Over a midi, the coat should cover the hem or stop well above it. If static bothers you, check for linings in acetate or viscose. See our winter coats and winter boots guides, or ask our AI stylist to build the whole look around a knit dress you already own.

How to care for a knit dress so it keeps its shape

  • Fold it. A dress carries more weight than a sweater, and on a hanger it lengthens and dents at the shoulders. For a night, fold it over the bar of a padded hanger.
  • Rest it. Give wool or cashmere a day off between wears and steam the seat and elbows. Viscose and cotton knits recover less.
  • Deal with pills early. The Woolmark Company says a few can be removed by hand, with a comb used very gently, or with a battery-operated fabric shaver.
  • Read the label. Brunello Cucinelli's belted cashmere and Max Mara's interlock dress allow a careful hand wash; ALAÏA's wool-cashmere skirt asks for specialist cleaning. Never wring a knit, and dry it flat.

How we chose

We started with fiber: most dresses here are led by wool, merino, cashmere or alpaca, and the viscose and nylon knits, mostly in the polo, pattern and evening edits, are named as such in the text. We read each listing's composition, stitch, lining and fit notes and looked at every photograph, because several listings name a color the picture does not show: Prada lists its rib midi as brown where the photograph reads almost black, Proenza Schouler's "red" Rosario is orange, Gabriela Hearst's "brown" Meier is camel, and ALAÏA's gris bleu mini is close to navy. We describe what the photograph shows, and pair it accordingly. We passed over dresses left in only two sizes wherever an equivalent had a longer run, chose the boots for shaft shape and hardware, and repeated no pick from another Vêtir guide.

Frequently asked questions

Are knit dresses warm enough for winter?

Yes, in the right fiber and weight: a midweight wool, merino or cashmere dress with long sleeves, opaque tights, knee boots and a coat. Viscose knits look warmer than they are; keep them for heated rooms.

What should I wear under a sweater dress?

Seamless underwear, tights, and a silk or cotton slip if the knit is fine or open. Under a sleeveless or short-sleeved knit dress, add a turtleneck finer than the dress.

How do I stop a knit dress from clinging?

Swap a polyester slip for silk or cotton: on the triboelectric lists we cite, polyester sits far from wool and is the likelier to build static against it. Size a rib so the ribs stay parallel at the hips, and choose a denser knit (interlock, double jersey or cable) for a dress that skims.

What shoes go with a knit midi dress?

Knee boots with a smooth shaft under the hem, loafers or low pumps with opaque tights, or lug-sole boots with a heavier sweater dress. With an evening knit column, an evening pump or sandal.

Can you wear a sweater dress to work?

Yes. Choose a fine-gauge knit midi with a collar or crew neck, long sleeves and a hem below the knee, in a dark or neutral color, and skip open backs and very short hems.

Should you size up in a knit dress?

Only in a fitted rib that pulls open at the hips or bust. Buy a relaxed sweater dress at your smaller size, since loose knits relax with wear.
