The Best Leather Pants for Women: Straight, Wide, Flared and Suede, and How to Size Them

The best leather pants for most women are a straight or gently relaxed leg in lambskin, with a rise high enough to tuck a sweater into, at least a partial lining and a hem set for the shoe you wear most. In black or dark brown, that pair goes with a cashmere crewneck on a Tuesday and a silk blouse on New Year's Eve. If you buy one pair this season, start with Khaite's high-waisted Ryden or The Row's Selviese, which is quarter-lined in silk. Every other pair here is a variation on that one: wide and barrel legs, flares and bootcuts, skinny pants and leggings, cargo and biker details, suede, faux leather, color and croc, and the leather skirt.
Below that: how to read the label, size leather that softens and set the hem, 15 outfits, and care. Our guide to the best leather jackets covers grain and finish; this one is about the bottom half.
How to choose leather pants: the hide, the label and the lining
The hide
Most of the leather trousers here are lambskin, thin and light enough to drape over a thigh and fold at the knee without standing away from the leg. Plongé is the name several houses give a particularly soft, light lambskin: Khaite describes the plongé of its Callum as "buttery-soft and lightweight," and Chloé cuts its slim and straight pants in plongé too. Calfskin is firmer. Khaite makes its croc-embossed Hunter pant in what it calls "robust and glossy calfskin," and in our experience calf holds a crisper line and creases less across the lap. Gabriela Hearst cuts its Rhein and Norman pants in goat suede and a moto pant in deerskin, and Tom Ford makes its buckled biker pants in bull leather. The practical question is weight: the lighter the hide, the more a pair moves like cloth and the sooner it softens.
Reading the label
The Federal Trade Commission's guides for leather and imitation leather list, in their scope section, luggage, wallets, handbags, footwear, belts "when not sold as part of a garment" and similar articles; trousers are not on the list. For those goods, the guides say a leather look-alike should be disclosed as not leather (their examples include "Imitation leather" and "Vinyl coated fabric") and an embossed hide should name its real kind ("Top Grain Cowhide With Simulated Pigskin Grain" is their example). The FTC's textile-labeling guide puts leather goods outside its fiber-labeling rules, and it asks for the fiber of a lining in a leather product only when that lining is there for warmth. Neither document is written for leather trousers, so the listing is where to check what you are buying: the animal (lamb, calf, goat, deer), the lining, and a composition line that backs up "leather" in the title. Not every listing has one: a retailer's listing for a Saint Laurent "Tapered Leather Pant" gives the composition as 100 percent cotton and calls the fabric vinyl coated.
The lining
Even a partial lining lets leather slide over tights, keeps body oils off the hide and stops a slim pair clinging when you sit. The Row's Selviese is quarter-lined in silk, Tom Ford lines its slim nappa ankle pants in acetate and silk, Isabel Marant's Rolinda is lined in viscose and Max Mara's suede drawstring pants in cupro. We prefer silk, cupro or viscose to polyester, which in our experience turns warm and tacky in a heated room. Unlined leather is lighter and drapes more, which suits wide and barrel shapes.
How leather pants should fit, and how much they give
Buy smooth leather closer than you would buy wool. In our experience, unlined lambskin and plongé relax across the seat, thighs and knees over the first weeks of wear; lined pairs relax less, and stretch nappa hardly changes. Our stylists' fitting-room tests:
- Close, not tight. The fly lies flat, with no ripples beside the zip and no lines pulling across the thighs. A pair that closes only when you stand up straight is a size too small, whatever it may give later.
- Sit and crouch. On a hard chair, the back waistband should stay put and the seat should not strain; leather without stretch has no give there on day one.
- Between sizes. In unlined lambskin, our stylists take the smaller size if it passes the sitting test; in stretch nappa, lined pairs and suede, they take the size that fits now. A listing's own fit note outranks our rule: Gabriela Hearst's listings for its Eos and Navarre pants both say the pair fits true to size.
- Read the rise by style, not by house. Khaite designs the Ryden to sit high on the waist, the Miles lower on the waist and the Callum low, with a slightly bowed leg.
- Compare measurements. Gucci gives a total length of 38.5 inches for its cropped Soft Nappa pants in an Italian 40, and 43.5 inches for its Lightweight Stretch pair in an Italian 38. Measure a pair you own from waistband to hem and you will know before ordering whether either reaches your shoe.
Where the hem should land: boots, heels and flats
A leather specialist can shorten leather trousers, but in our experience letting them down rarely works: there is seldom enough hide turned up, and the old fold stays visible. Avoid a deep break too: our stylists find that the fold where a long hem rests on the shoe sets into a permanent ridge across the shin.
| Shape | Where the hem lands | Shoes that work |
|---|---|---|
| Straight | On the top of the foot, a slight break at most | Loafers, pointed flats, ankle boots under the hem |
| Wide leg | Close to the floor in your shoes, only the toe showing | Pumps, platform loafers, heeled boots |
| Barrel | At or just above the ankle bone, so the curve closes | Chunky loafers, heeled ankle boots |
| Flared or bootcut | Covering most of the shoe, hemmed for its heel | Heels, platforms, heeled boots |
| Skinny or leggings | At the ankle bone, or tucked into a boot | Knee boots, slingbacks, ballet flats |
| Cropped | Above the ankle bone, showing the whole shoe | Loafers, slingbacks, kitten heels |
Only skinny pairs and leggings tuck into a knee boot; a straight leg goes over a slim one. Our guide to the best knee-high boots covers shaft and calf fit, and you can shop every knee-high boot on Vêtir.
Women's leather pants with a straight leg: the pair to buy first
A straight leg falls from the hip without hugging the calf, so it covers an ankle boot, sits cleanly on a loafer and looks right under a long coat. Khaite's Ryden has no pockets at all: darts shape it and a zip closes it at the back, which keeps the front flat under a tucked knit. The Row's Selviese, in dark brown, has belt loops and a back pocket. Balmain's high-waisted lambskin pair adds an offset zip, a double fob pocket and engraved rivets. Isabel Marant's Rolinda is a close-cut five-pocket in dark navy lamb leather, with snap-fastened cuffs. Magda Butrym's dark brown five-pocket pair, Chloé's olive plongé with an asymmetric, horn-buttoned waist and Gucci's cropped soft nappa complete the edit. Dark brown looks softer than black by daylight; our stylists wear it with cream, gray, olive and burgundy.
Straight-leg leather pants to buy first
Wide-leg and barrel leather trousers
Wide leather trousers move differently from wool: the hide has weight, so the leg swings rather than floats, and the shine catches every fold. Loewe's barrel-leg pants are lamb leather with calf details. ALAÏA's dark brown barrel curves out from the hip and, in its listing's words, tapers toward the cuffs, and Bottega Veneta gets the same curve from its mid-rise pair's curved outer seams. For a straighter line, Loewe's gathered pair closes at the side, Bottega Veneta's relaxed-fit trousers carry an intrecciato back pocket, and Khaite's black Callum is low-rise and relaxed but tapered, with a slightly bowed leg after vintage men's jeans. Loewe's cropped pair joins leather to suede below the knee on an elastic waist, and Brunello Cucinelli's pleated lambskin culottes are cropped with a curved hem.
Keep the top fitted or short, because volume in leather already makes a statement. For wide legs in wool, crepe and silk, see our guide to wide-leg trousers.

Flared and bootcut leather pants
A flare widens from the knee; a bootcut opens just enough to sit over a boot. Both need a heel, so choose the shoe before the hem. Gabriela Hearst's Rhein, in goat suede, is slim through the hip and opens at the knee; it is here in rust and in pale blue. The house's Navarre moto pant is bootcut deerskin with equestrian color-blocking, which it describes as an homage to Gabriela Hearst's upbringing on ranchland in Uruguay. The Row's Kenan is a bootcut in lamb suede on an elasticated waist, Magda Butrym cuts a subtle flare in suede corduroy lined in satin, and Gucci's lightweight stretch leather pair is fitted, with a slightly flared hem that zips. In our experience a suede flare looks warmer and more 1970s; the same line in smooth leather looks sharper and dresses up more easily.

Skinny leather pants and leather leggings
Skinny leather is where construction matters most. Stretch nappa, as in Tom Ford's skinny pants with zips up the front of each leg, moves with you and recovers; plain lambskin cut close depends on darts and seams. Brunello Cucinelli makes two: dark brown front-seamed leggings with an elasticated waist, listed as leather, cashmere and elastane, and black ankle pants that pull on over a wool-and-elastane waistband. Balmain's lambskin trousers hook under the foot with stirrups, ALAÏA's high-rise leggings have a belt attached and zipped cuffs, and Chloé's slim plongé pants zip at the ankle.
Put the volume on top: a long cardigan, an oversized cashmere sweater or a knee-length coat. Our stylists' easiest winter outfit is a slim pair with a knee boot pulled over it.

Cargo, biker and denim-look leather pants
Details change what leather trousers say. Gabriela Hearst's Eos puts cargo pockets on a sculpted barrel leg in lamb plongé. Balmain's biker trousers have pintuck pleats down the legs, topstitched knee panels, press studs and ankle zips, and Tom Ford's biker pants buckle at the hips. Isabel Marant's Brinley, in dark burgundy, hangs carabiner-clipped straps from the waist. Then there is trompe-l'oeil: Bottega Veneta prints denim onto a five-pocket cowhide pair and a high-waisted nappa column leg that, across a room, passes for jeans. Treat these as a second pair and keep the rest of the outfit simple.

Suede pants
Suede is leather buffed into a nap, softer to the eye than smooth leather and easier to wear by day, and more practical than its reputation if you keep it out of the rain. Our own users look for it: 27 accounts searched for suede in Vêtir's search box in its first seven weeks, from August 6 to September 26, 2026.
Brunello Cucinelli has three pairs here: a taupe five-pocket wide leg, a baggy pair with a watch pocket and a straight olive pair on an elasticated waist. Max Mara's drawstring pants are pale beige lamb suede lined in cupro. Gabriela Hearst's Norman, in goat suede, has dramatically wide legs and seams the house says are invisibly bonded, and its Amoret is a barrel in tan suede. Bottega Veneta's relaxed wide leg is dyed a mottled "Cloudy Indigo," and Loewe's straight pair fades from a glossy finish at the waist to suede at the hem. For more, see our story Trending: The Suede Edit.
Suede shows wear where it is rubbed: the seat, the inside of the knee, the thigh under a bag strap. Our routine, not any house's instruction: brush it in one direction after wearing to lift the nap, spray it with a protector before the first wear (test inside the hem), and keep new dark suede off a pale sofa, because in our experience the dye can transfer.

Faux leather pants: what polyurethane is, and how long it lasts
Faux leather is a coated fabric: a textile base under a top layer of synthetic polymer, typically polyurethane or PVC. "Vegan leather" tells you what a piece is not, so read the composition. Maison Margiela's oversized wide-leg pants list polyurethane and viscose. Max Mara's cropped coated jersey trousers spell out the construction: a 100 percent polyester jersey with a layer of polyurethane resin, cut with leatherwork-style seams. Max Mara's two Sublime pairs, a flare and a kick-flare, and Stella McCartney's gathered pencil skirt list polyester (with elastane in the skirt) and do not name a coating. The FTC's textile guide asks for fibers only, says plastic need not appear on a label, and exempts a fabric whose coating adds at least 35 percent to the weight of the base fabric from fiber labeling, unless the seller says something about fiber. So look for the words polyurethane, PU or PVC; a faux pair that names none of them has told you about its base, not its surface.
Faux leather does not soften or mold to you, so buy the size that fits on day one. Care is simple: Maison Margiela's listing says to wipe its pair with a soft damp cloth, and Max Mara's allows a cold hand wash, inside out, for its cropped coated jersey trousers. The coating does degrade with time. Conservation researchers from Glossy Surfaces, a project run with museums including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, write in the abstract of a chapter in Wiley's Handbook on Museum Textiles (2022) that a significant proportion of plasticized PVC and polyurethane-coated garments in museum fashion collections already show blooming, peeling, stickiness or powdering, and of "the generally short lifespan of these polymers." That abstract does not separate the two coatings. A 2024 editorial in Conservar Património by four of the same authors is specific to polyurethane: it reports a large presence of polyurethane coatings in fashion collections, as opposed to PVC, and names blooming, a white deposit commonly found on aged polyurethane-coated fabric, and flaking as the most urgent conservation problems. Buy faux leather for a shape you want to try, not as the pair you expect to keep for a decade.
Faux leather pants and skirts, with the composition named
Colored, croc-embossed and haircalf leather pants for the holidays
From Thanksgiving on Thursday, November 26, to New Year's Eve, our stylists treat leather trousers as a stand-in for a dress at most parties short of black tie, with color or texture doing the festive work that sequins do on a dress. Khaite's Hunter is calfskin embossed with alligator scales, an engineered pattern the house says is oriented on each pair, and it is made in the United States. The Callum also comes in olive-brown leather and in hair-on calfskin, which carries a short, glossy coat of hair. Chloé's slim pants come in red calfskin, Brunello Cucinelli's slim bordeaux pair is trimmed at the waist in wool, and Tom Ford's slim ankle pants are pale lilac-pink nappa. A colored pair wants a quiet top: our stylists put red with black cashmere, bordeaux with gray, olive-brown with ivory, and lilac with cream.

The leather skirt, for when you would rather not wear pants
A leather skirt does the same job with less to fit: no rise, no seat, no hem arguing with your shoes, and no waistband pressing across the lap at a long dinner. Choose the length for your boots. A mini, like Khaite's olive-brown Jett in plongé, ALAÏA's asymmetric black mini or Alexander McQueen's pleated burgundy, goes with opaque tights in the skirt's color family and a knee boot or a loafer. A knee-length sheath, such as TOTEME's, is the office version. At midi length, Loewe's asymmetric nappa skirt has a diagonal waistband, Brunello Cucinelli's black pencil falls below the knee with a walking vent, and Tom Ford's croc-effect pencil comes belted. The Row's Danas is a beige suede wrap that fastens with a horn button. With a midi, the boot should meet the hem or disappear under it.

How to care for and store leather pants
- Clean rarely, and through a leather specialist. Listings word it differently ("specialist clean," "dry clean by leather specialist"); a Brunello Cucinelli listing is plainest: go to specialized facilities for cleaning, do not dry clean. Ask whether a cleaner handles leather in-house.
- Clean matching pieces together. Have a leather jacket and trousers bought as a pair cleaned together; in our experience cleaning can shift a shade slightly, and you want it to shift on both.
- Hang them long or fold them once. Use a clip hanger with felt pads at the hem, or fold the pair once over a padded bar; leather keeps a crease. Store it in breathable cotton, out of the sun.
- After rain, our routine is to blot, dry at room temperature away from radiators, and brush suede only once it is fully dry. A day off between wears lets knees and seats recover.
- Faux leather follows its own label. Keep it away from heat and, in our experience, away from sharp folds, which crack the coating over time.
What to buy once, and what to wear for a season
Buy once: a black or dark brown straight leg in lambskin, at least partly lined, in a rise you can tuck a knit into. It behaves like a neutral, so it outlasts trends. A taupe or brown suede pair is the second to keep. Barrel legs, stirrups, colored leather, croc embossing and printed denim are pleasures for a season or two, and faux leather is a few-season piece by nature. Leather skirts sit in between: a plain mini or a knee-length sheath lasts, while an asymmetric or pleated one dates sooner. The leather and suede trousers here start under $2,000 and most sit between about $4,000 and $7,500; the faux pieces run from about $400 to $1,000.
How we chose
We started from the hide, not the label on the door. A pair stayed in only if its listing named what it is made of (lamb, calf, goat, deer, or the polyester and polyurethane of faux leather), and we left out wool and denim trousers sold with leather trim or patches, as well as a "leather" pant whose listing gives the fabric as vinyl-coated cotton. We read every lining line. Color comes from the photographs: Isabel Marant's Rolinda is called navy because it photographs navy, Chloé's straight pair is called olive although its listing says olive brown, and Khaite's Callum and Jett, listed as dark olive, are called olive-brown because that is how they photograph. We preferred long size runs, skipped pieces featured in our other guides and kept to new pieces from houses on our luxury list.
Frequently asked questions
Do leather pants stretch?
A little. In our experience unlined lambskin relaxes across the seat, thighs and knees in the first weeks; lined pairs and stretch nappa change less, and none get longer. Buy them close but comfortable sitting down, and follow the listing's fit note where there is one.
Should leather pants be tight or loose?
Straight and skinny pairs should be close through the seat and thigh with no pulling at the zip when you sit. Wide, barrel and relaxed pairs are cut loose on purpose; fit those at the waist and hip.
What shoes go with leather pants?
Loafers, pointed flats or ankle boots under a straight leg; heels or platforms under flares and bootcuts; chunky loafers or heeled boots with barrels; and a knee boot pulled over skinny pairs and leggings.
Are faux leather pants worth it?
For a shape you want to try at a lower price, yes. Polyurethane coatings do not soften like leather, and museum conservators name blooming and flaking among the ways coated garments age, so plan on a few seasons of wear rather than a decade, and buy the size that fits on day one.
How do you clean leather pants?
Rarely, and only through a leather specialist. Between cleanings, wipe smooth leather with a dry, soft cloth and brush suede. Never machine wash leather.
Can you wear leather pants to work?
In most offices that allow tailored separates, yes. Choose a straight or wide pair in black or dark brown, add a fine knit or a shirt and a blazer, and keep the shoes plain.
