Chanel, Explained: The Flap Bags, the CHANEL 25, Price Increases and How to Buy

Chanel is the Paris house Gabrielle Chanel founded in 1910, and its defining bag is the quilted flap: the 2.55 of February 1955, and the classic flap Karl Lagerfeld built on it in 1983, which Chanel now calls the 11.12. New Chanel bags are sold by Chanel itself and their prices have climbed fast, so many buyers go pre-owned. On Vêtir the split is explicit: the classic flaps, 2.55 reissues, older designs and costume jewelry come from resale dealers and sit in modules labeled pre-owned, while the new-season bags, including the CHANEL 25 and the Maxi Flap, link through to Chanel, and the J12 and Première watches are new. Below, our editors cover the history, the flap bags and how to choose one, the newer designs, Chanel's price increases, how to check a pre-owned bag, and how to wear it all.

A short history of Chanel, from a hat shop to Matthieu Blazy

Gabrielle Chanel, already called Coco, opened her hat shop at 21 rue Cambon in 1910, and actresses wearing her hats built her name, according to Chanel's own history. She opened a boutique in Deauville in 1912 and began selling sportswear in jersey, then a fabric for men's underwear, the following year; her first couture house opened in Biarritz in 1915, and in 1918 she bought 31 rue Cambon, where the boutique, salons and workshops still share one building. N°5 followed in 1921, made with the perfumer Ernest Beaux.

She staged her comeback in 1954, at 71, and in February 1955 designed the 2.55 flap bag, named for its date. She died in 1971. Karl Lagerfeld took over in 1983 and, in his first year, reworked the 2.55 into the classic double flap, adding a chain threaded with leather and the interlocking-CC turn-lock, as Sotheby's history of the flap bag recounts. He led the house until his death in 2019, when his longtime right hand, Virginie Viard, took over. Matthieu Blazy, who came from Bottega Veneta, showed his first Chanel collection at the Grand Palais on October 6, 2025, Wallpaper* reported: Charvet shirts, tweed tailoring cut loose like menswear, and a 2.55 that looked crushed and worn, as if passed down.

Chanel is also one of the houses our own users ask about most. In the 12 months to September 26, 2026, it was the fourth most-named brand, by number of users, in the requests people typed to our AI stylist, after Saint Laurent, Khaite and Prada.

Chanel flap bags: the 2.55 vs the classic flap (11.12)

The two bags share the diamond quilting, the flap closure and the half-moon pocket on the back. What separates them, as Sotheby's sets out, is the hardware:

Inside, the listings we checked describe the same layout: a zip pocket under the first flap, a slit pocket under the second, and two open pockets separated by a slim lipstick compartment. Sotheby's traces the traditional burgundy lining to the uniform Gabrielle Chanel wore as a girl at the convent of Aubazine. The 11.12 is a couturier's bag in construction too. According to WWD's visit to Chanel's workshop at Verneuil-en-Halatte, it is made only in France, it is sewn and turned inside out like a jacket, and it takes some 180 steps. Unlike an Hermès bag, which one artisan makes alone, it passes through about 30 people, and Chanel says training a leather artisan fully takes four to five years.

How to choose a classic flap: size, leather and hardware

  • Size. In the listings we checked, the small measures about 9 inches across, the medium about 10, the jumbo about 12 and the maxi about 13. The small and medium hang about 16.5 inches on a single chain (9.5 doubled), which is a shoulder length for most women and a crossbody only on a petite frame; the jumbo's longer chain, about 23 inches, crosses the body comfortably. The mini, in rectangular and square shapes, is the evening and crossbody size.
  • Leather. Caviar, the pebbled grained calfskin, resists scratches and suits a bag you carry daily. Lambskin is smoother and softer and shows wear sooner, which some owners like as patina.
  • Hardware and age. Gold, silver and the darker ruthenium all appear. Collectors prize vintage bags made before late 2008, when Chanel moved from 24-karat gold-plated hardware to gold-tone metal, according to Sotheby's.

For a first Chanel, a medium or small classic flap in black caviar with gold hardware is the bag you will carry most often, over a coat in winter and a T-shirt in summer. Compare it with other houses' styles in our designer shoulder bags. The flaps in this module are pre-owned, from resale dealers, and several are listed as never worn.

The new Chanel bags: the CHANEL 25 and the Maxi Flap

The CHANEL 25 was teased at the Cruise 2025 show in Marseille in May 2024 and featured heavily in the Spring-Summer 2025 show that October, WWD reported when its campaign with Dua Lipa was unveiled. It is a soft hobo that borrows the quilting and the braided chain of the 11.12 and adds two large pockets on the sides. It launched in three sizes, and a Mini has since appeared in Chanel's collections. Chanel's president of fashion, Bruno Pavlovsky, told WWD the bag is roomy enough for a computer, which makes the medium the most practical Chanel for work.

The Maxi Flap is a larger, softer take on the classic flap. Chanel's own listings place it in Spring-Summer 2026, Matthieu Blazy's first season, and it has continued in later collections, including in suede. It keeps the quilting, the flap and the chain but lets the leather relax against the body. If the stiff classic flap feels too formal for you, this is the Chanel flap to try on. The name itself is older: Chanel made oversized flaps in the late 1980s and 1990s, and "Maxi" has never meant one standard size, so check the measurements on any vintage Maxi you find on the resale market.

These bags are new, sold by Chanel itself, and on Vêtir they link through to Chanel's own site, which sets their availability and final price.

Other Chanel bags worth knowing, pre-owned

  • Wallet on Chain. A flap wallet with card slots and a zip pocket, on a chain you can wear across the body. It is the least expensive way into the classic look and suits evenings when a phone and cards are enough.
  • 2.55 Reissue. The Mademoiselle-lock flap on its all-metal chain, including a deliberately worn-in version sold as the Crush, with a flap you can reshape.
  • 19 and 22. Later house designs: the 19, designed by Lagerfeld and Virginie Viard for Fall-Winter 2019 and described by Sotheby's as his final contribution to the house, is a large, soft quilted flap on a chain of mixed metals, and the 22 is a slouchy drawstring bag with CHANEL spelled across the front.
  • Vanity case, Coco Handle and Deauville. The zip-around vanity case with a top handle, a 1990s design; the Coco Handle, a flap bag with a leather top handle; and the Deauville, a canvas or wool shopping tote.

These bags are pre-owned, from resale dealers, and a few are listed as never worn. For more small bags across houses, see our designer crossbody bags.

How to buy Chanel new

Chanel sells its handbags through its own boutiques, and the new bags on Vêtir link to Chanel's own listings rather than to another store. Three things make buying new easier.

  • Know which bags are permanent. The 11.12 and the 2.55 in black leather are made season after season. Seasonal versions in suede, denim, tweed or sequins arrive with each collection, as the collection names on Chanel's listings show, and are made for that season only.
  • Decide on size and leather before you go. Try the small and medium side by side, and the caviar and lambskin, so the only open question is color.
  • Keep everything. The box, dust bag, receipt and any card or tag are part of what a bag is worth if you ever sell it.

Chanel price increases: what has happened and how to plan for it

Chanel raises its prices regularly, and the classic flap shows it most clearly. Sotheby's put the U.S. price of the medium classic flap at $4,900 in 2016 and $11,300 after an increase in August 2025, more than double in under a decade. The rises have come in steps rather than jumps: WWD reported in 2025 that for several years the house had raised prices in March and September to reflect the cost of raw materials and to align prices between regions, and Bruno Pavlovsky told WWD that the euro price is set once a year, with dollar prices adjusted for the exchange rate and usually timed to the launch of collections.

What that means for a buyer:

  • Check the current Chanel price before you judge a pre-owned one. A dealer's price only makes sense against what the same bag costs new today.
  • Do not expect a big discount on a pristine bag. Sotheby's notes that in-demand Chanel styles in perfect condition sell there close to retail, while a comparable store-fresh Hermès bag can fetch several times its boutique price; the bigger savings on Chanel come from bags with some wear.
  • Buy new when you have decided, not in a rush before a rumored increase. A bag you are unsure about is expensive at any price.
  • Consider vintage for the classic shape. Sotheby's says a classic flap that sold for about $1,000 in the 1980s now sells for around $6,000 in excellent condition, still well below the price of a new one.

Buying Chanel pre-owned: how to check a bag

Every classic flap, reissue and older Chanel design on Vêtir is pre-owned and sold by a resale dealer, not by Chanel. Before you buy, check these points.

  1. The seller. Buy only from an established reseller or auction house that authenticates every piece and accepts returns if an independent check disagrees. High-quality counterfeits have grown with demand, Sotheby's warns.
  2. The serial number or chip. Chanel began numbering bags in 1984, with a serial sticker inside, and from 2021 it replaced the stickers with a microchip, Sotheby's notes. A bag made before 1984 has neither. Good dealers print the serial series or season code in the listing.
  3. Condition. Wear shows first on the corners and base; look for scratches on the hardware, loose stitching and marks on the leather, and remember that lambskin marks more easily than caviar.
  4. The set. A box, dust bag and receipt help the resale value and the paper trail.
  5. Vintage hardware. On a bag made before late 2008, 24-karat gold plating is part of the value; make sure the photos show it clearly.

Caring for a Chanel bag

Store the bag upright in its dust bag, lightly stuffed with tissue so the flap and quilting keep their shape, and away from direct sunlight, which fades color. Tuck the chain inside rather than letting it hang against the leather, where it can leave marks. Keep lambskin out of the rain and away from hand cream; wipe caviar with a soft, dry cloth. For repairs, start with a Chanel boutique or a specialist leather restorer rather than a general cobbler; Chanel runs its own repair workshop at Verneuil-en-Halatte, WWD found.

Chanel jewelry and watches

Pearls and the interlocking CCs are Chanel codes, and its costume jewelry is full of both. Pre-owned pieces are an easy way to add Chanel to plain clothes, and vintage clip-on earrings suit anyone without pierced ears. Wear a long pearl rope doubled over a black sweater, or a single pair of CC earrings with a white shirt. These pieces are pre-owned, from a resale dealer. See other houses' designs in our designer earrings.

The watches are new, sold through a department store. The Première, from 1987, was Chanel's first watch, and the house says its octagonal dial takes its shape from the N°5 bottle stopper and the Place Vendôme; the Iconic Chain version's bracelet repeats the metal chain threaded with leather from the bags. The J12 arrived in 2000 in black ceramic and in white three years later, according to Chanel; it is made in Switzerland, and the 33 mm size suits most wrists while the 38 mm reads bolder. The Code Coco is a cuff-like steel bracelet watch. Compare them with other houses' in our designer watches.

How to wear Chanel

Chanel looks most modern when one piece carries the outfit and the rest stays simple. Four formulas to start from:

  1. Weekend: straight jeans, a white shirt, a tweed jacket worn open and ballet flats, with a small flap crossbody. The tweed and the quilting do the talking.
  2. Work: a navy suit, a fine knit, loafers and a medium CHANEL 25 on the shoulder, big enough for a laptop.
  3. Evening: a black dress, a mini flap or Wallet on Chain, and one pair of CC earrings or a doubled pearl rope, not both.
  4. Travel: a cashmere sweater, wide trousers, sneakers and a Deauville tote, with the classic flap packed for dinner.

Two rules help. Keep the chain metal matched to your jewelry, gold with gold and silver with silver. And wear the quilting once: a quilted bag with quilted boots and a quilted jacket turns into a uniform. To build the rest of the outfit around a Chanel bag you already own, ask our AI stylist.

How we chose

Only Chanel appears in these modules. Flaps, reissues, older designs and costume jewelry are pre-owned from resale dealers and sit under pre-owned headings; the new-season bags link to Chanel's own listings, and the watches come new from a department store. We picked the flap in the sizes, leathers and colors that are easiest to wear and to sell on, checked every listing's notes on measurements, leather, hardware, condition and serial or chip, and matched each photo to its description before a product went in. The history, craft and price facts come from Chanel, WWD, Wallpaper* and Sotheby's, with a link at each one.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the Chanel 2.55 and the classic flap?

The 2.55, designed by Gabrielle Chanel in February 1955, closes with a rectangular Mademoiselle lock and hangs from an all-metal chain. The classic flap, Karl Lagerfeld's 1983 version, which Chanel now calls the 11.12, has the interlocking-CC turn-lock and a chain threaded with leather.

What is the CHANEL 25 bag?

A soft quilted hobo with two side pockets and the 11.12's braided chain, introduced on the runway in 2024 and launched with a campaign starring Dua Lipa in 2025. It comes in several sizes, including a Mini, and the medium holds a laptop.

Why are Chanel bags so expensive, and do prices keep rising?

The classic flap is made in France in some 180 steps, and Chanel raises prices regularly, usually twice a year: Sotheby's put the medium at $4,900 in 2016 and $11,300 after an August 2025 increase. Pristine pre-owned examples of popular styles sell close to retail, so the bigger savings come from bags with some wear.

How can I tell if a pre-owned Chanel bag is real?

Buy from an established reseller that authenticates and accepts returns. Check for a serial sticker (bags from 1984 to 2021) or a microchip (from 2021), even quilting and stitching, and clean hardware; a bag made before 1984 has no serial number.

Which Chanel bag should I buy first?

A small or medium classic flap in black caviar leather with gold hardware for everyday wear, or a Wallet on Chain if you want the look for less. For work, the medium CHANEL 25.
