Holiday Outfits for Every December Plan, From the Market Run to the Hanukkah Table

The best holiday outfits are planned around what you will actually be doing, and most of December is not a party. It is an afternoon on your feet at a cold market, two hours in a concert seat, a long brunch, a full day at your in-laws' and a morning in an airport line. Our rule for all of them: dress for the longest and least glamorous part of the day, then add one festive element, such as a sequined knit, a velvet slipper or a jewel color, that you would be happy to see in the photographs.
Below are complete outfits for each of those plans in the 2026 holiday season, from holiday shopping to a Hanukkah dinner, with the pieces we would buy. Parties have their own guides, and we point you to them near the end.
Holiday outfit ideas at a glance
Each row is the outfit we would build for that plan; the last column is the piece that most often spoils it.
| The plan | The outfit | Shoes | Leave at home |
|---|---|---|---|
| Holiday market or a shopping day | One warm knit under a long coat, trousers, a hands-free bag | Shearling-lined boots with a rubber sole | An open tote you have to hold shut |
| The Nutcracker or a holiday concert | A long-sleeved knit dress, or cashmere with a long skirt | Low heels or loafers | Anything that rustles when you sit |
| A gift-exchange evening | One sparkly knit with trousers or dark jeans | Flats or velvet slippers | A short, tight skirt (you will sit on the floor) |
| Holiday brunch | A tweed or bouclé jacket over a fine knit | Loafers or ballet flats | Head-to-toe sequins before dark |
| A day at the in-laws' | Good knitwear and trousers you can sit on the floor in, plus real pajamas | Your own house shoes | Slogans and big logos |
| Travel day | Easy-waist wool or cashmere trousers, a knit, a long coat | Broken-in boots or sneakers | Jeans with a stiff waistband |
| A night in with guests | Knit trousers or a knit dress | House shoes with a real sole | Socks alone on a wooden floor |
| Winter wedding guest | Long sleeves, at the length the invitation asks for | Closed evening shoes | Bare arms without a wrap |
| Hanukkah dinner | A midi or maxi skirt and a sleeved top | Low heels or boots | Loose sleeves near the candles |
Holiday shopping and Christmas markets: dressing for hours outdoors
A holiday market asks more of an outfit than most parties do. In New York, the Holiday Shops at Bryant Park's Winter Village run from October 28, 2026, to January 3, 2027, according to Bryant Park's Winter Village page, and a visit there, or to any outdoor market, means standing still in the cold, then walking into overheated shops and back out again. Three things decide whether you enjoy it.
- Layers that come off in one move. Wear one warm knit under a long coat rather than a sweater, a cardigan and a vest. In a hot shop you unbutton the coat; at the stalls you button it again. A coat that reaches below the knee keeps more of you warm while you stand.
- Feet first. Standing on cold pavement chills you faster than walking does, so this is the day for shearling-lined boots with a rubber sole. Suede wants a protector spray before its first outing and a brush after every wet one.
- Both hands free. You will be holding a hot drink, a paper bag or a phone. Carry a crossbody or a belt bag that closes, worn at the front in a crowd. Check the strap drop against your coat, not your sweater: Bottega Veneta's Gemellini bag lists a drop of about 18 inches and Saint Laurent's LouLou camera bag about 21.5 inches, and over a thick wool coat the longer strap lets the bag sit at the hip instead of riding up under the arm.
Comfort is the fit concern our own users raise most: over the past year, 34 users gave Vêtir's AI stylist a comfort or walkability requirement (no heels, flat shoes), against 13 who asked about petite fits.
Three market-day outfits:
- Gray and camel. A gray cashmere turtleneck, ecru jeans, a long camel coat, tan shearling-lined boots and a burgundy camera bag.
- All black, three textures. A black turtleneck, black wool trousers and Manolo Blahnik's lace-up Mircus boots, which have a lug sole, with Saint Laurent's quilted Lou belt bag buckled over the coat.
- Navy and gray. A navy cashmere crewneck, gray flannel trousers, black lug-sole boots and Prada's light-gray Daino camera bag, which has a double zip.

Fitting shearling boots. Try lined boots on late in the day and with the socks you will wear at the market, because a thick sock takes up the room the lining was cut around. Then follow the house's own note where there is one: Burberry's listing for its check Flint boots says they run slightly small and suggests going half a size up. A boot whose upper is shearling, like Gabriela Hearst's Tina, wears its fleece on the outside, which makes it the least forgiving of salted slush; keep it for dry, cold days. After a wet afternoon, let any shearling boot dry at room temperature, away from a radiator.

The Nutcracker or a holiday concert
For the ballet itself, from matinees to gala nights, our guide to what to wear to the Nutcracker covers the dress codes, the coat check and the theater stairs. Holiday concerts need a slightly different answer, because many of them happen in churches and cathedrals: carol services, a Messiah, a choir by candlelight. Those rooms are often cool, there is often no coat check, and you sit on a wooden pew for an hour or more with your coat on your lap.
That makes the long-sleeved knit dress the best thing to wear. It is warm without a wrap, it does not crease across the lap the way satin does, and a hem below the knee stays put when you stand for a carol. Wear opaque tights and a low heel or boots, and keep the shine small: a little shimmer in the yarn catches candlelight without scraping against the pew the way a sequined skirt does. In a concert hall with a coat check, the same dress works with a lighter coat.
- Charcoal wrap. Isabel Marant's Jozira sweater dress, full length with buttoned shoulders and a self-tie wrap skirt, with black tights, black suede kitten heels and a black cashmere wrap.
- Navy rib. Gabriela Hearst's Ardor polo dress in cashmere and silk, navy tights and burgundy velvet loafers.
- Chocolate wool. Max Mara's high-neck wool and cashmere dress, which comes with a removable brooch, with dark-brown suede knee boots and an ivory cashmere wrap.
- Mustard rib. Proenza Schouler's Roux dress, a silk-blend rib with a mock neck and flared cuffs, with gray tights and black suede ankle boots.
- Ivory, cut short. Moncler's alpaca-blend turtleneck dress is the short one here, so wear it with opaque gray tights and gray suede knee boots that meet the hem, under a long gray coat.
More long-sleeved options are in our edit of knit dresses.

What to wear to a holiday gift exchange
A Secret Santa or a White Elephant swap at a friend's home is an evening of sitting, reaching, unwrapping and laughing, often on a low sofa or the floor. The dress code is usually dressy casual, and the outfit that suits it is one sparkly knit with trousers or dark jeans. A knit moves when you lean across a coffee table, and sequins sewn onto a knit are softer to sit in than sequins on a stiff mesh.
Sequins snag whatever rubs against them, so wear a sequined cardigan over cotton or silk rather than your finest cashmere, and carry your bag on the other shoulder or leave it by the door. And if the game involves stealing gifts across the room, you will be up and down all evening, so this is not the night for a short, fitted skirt.
- Olive sequins over cream. Carolina Herrera's long sequined cardigan, tied at the neck with its ribbon, over a cream silk shirt and black velvet trousers.
- Champagne and denim. Missoni's zigzag sequined lamé sweater with dark straight jeans and burgundy velvet slippers.
- Parchment and gold. Bottega Veneta's cardigan in cashmere, wool and silk, in an ivory the house calls parchment with gold hardware, over ivory wool trousers and black loafers.
- Black, quietly. Brunello Cucinelli's V-neck sequined sweater, knitted with a touch of mohair, over a gray flannel skirt and gray tights.

Festive outfits for daylight: the holiday brunch
A holiday brunch, whether at a restaurant between Christmas and New Year's or at a friend's table, happens in daylight, often by a window. Sequins look harsh in that light, and a party dress looks like last night's. The piece we reach for is a tweed or bouclé jacket. It is dressier than a sweater and softer than a blazer, it works with jeans and with tailored trousers, and its texture reads as festive without a single sequin.
How a brunch jacket should fit. Try it on over a fine knit, not over a T-shirt alone, because that is how you will wear it in December. Sleeves should end at the wrist bone so a bracelet or a watch shows. Before you keep it, raise both arms as if you were lifting a coat off a high hook: a cropped jacket that rides up past the waistband when you do that will do it at every brunch. Bouclé loops snag on rings and on chain straps, so carry a bag with a leather strap.
- Tweed and dark denim. Carolina Herrera's charcoal tweed jacket, hand-embroidered with beaded flowers according to its listing, over a white T-shirt with dark straight jeans, black loafers and small gold hoops.
- Winter white. Toteme's open-front ivory bouclé blazer, finished with fringed edges, over an ivory turtleneck with cream wide-leg trousers and burgundy ballet flats.
- Blush and charcoal. Valentino Garavani's blush tweed jacket over a charcoal turtleneck, with charcoal wool trousers and burgundy loafers.
- Black tweed, white shirt. Saint Laurent's single-button tweed blazer over a white poplin shirt with black wide-leg trousers and black pumps.

A day at the in-laws'
A holiday at a partner's family home is the longest occasion of the season: breakfast to a late dinner, often overnight, with children on the floor, a walk, the photographs and someone else's rules about shoes. Dress like a considerate guest who expects to be useful. That means good knitwear and trousers you can kneel in, fabrics that survive a spill, and nothing with a slogan or a large logo.
- Plan two looks, not five. A day outfit of a navy cashmere crewneck and gray flannel trousers becomes a dinner outfit when you change the top for a silk blouse and add earrings. One small bag of changes is easier than a suitcase of options in a spare room.
- Bring your own house shoes. Many families keep a shoes-off house, and arriving with velvet or felt slippers that have a proper sole spares you a day in socks on a wooden staircase.
- Pack pajamas you would wear to their breakfast table. The morning is when the photographs happen. Choose an opaque two-piece set and a robe. Toteme's monogram flannel pajamas are made of modal rather than cotton and need specialist cleaning, according to the listing; Versace's Barocco cotton-terry robe, by contrast, can go in the washing machine, which helps on a long stay.
Silk pajama trousers double for the drive home: Saint Laurent's printed silk satin pair with a gray crewneck and a long coat looks deliberate in a way sweatpants never do. Browse more pajamas.

What to wear on a holiday travel day
For many families the holiday journey is a long drive rather than a flight, and the outfit has to cope with either: hours of sitting under a seat belt or in a narrow seat, an overheated car or cabin, a cold gas station or jet bridge, and a front door where someone is waiting to take a picture.
Flying is a little simpler than it used to be. Since July 2025, passengers at domestic airports have been able to keep their shoes on at TSA checkpoints, according to the TSA's announcement, so a lace-up boot no longer costs you time at security.
Over the past year, four different users sent our AI stylist the same request in the same phrasing: a chic airport travel outfit that's comfortable. Our answer:
- The waist decides the day. Choose trousers with an elastic or drawstring waist in wool flannel or a cashmere knit. A denim waistband that feels fine at the curb is digging in by the third hour.
- The coat is your blanket. A long wool coat over one knit, plus a cashmere wrap, handles a cold plane and a hot car better than a puffer you cannot take off in a narrow seat.
- Wear your warmest shoes, broken in. Winter boots are the bulkiest shoes you own, so wear them rather than pack them, and never take a new pair on a travel day.
- Mind the friction. Cashmere knit trousers pill where a seat belt, a bag strap or an armrest rubs. For frequent trips, a woven stretch-wool jogger, like Max Mara's flannel pair or Kiton's creased version, keeps its surface longer. Max Mara's knitted cashmere wide-leg trousers list dry cleaning as their only care, so a cashmere comb is how you lift pills between cleans.
Three travel-day outfits:
- Taupe cashmere. Max Mara's knitted cashmere wide-leg trousers in taupe, a cream crewneck, a long camel coat and ivory leather sneakers.
- The tailored jogger. Max Mara's stretch-wool joggers in turtledove, a warm taupe, with a cream turtleneck, a long charcoal coat and white sneakers.
- Soft gray, top to toe. Victoria Beckham's Clara track pants in a wool and cashmere blend with a gray cashmere hoodie and white sneakers.

A cozy night in with guests
A film, a board game, fondue by the fire: the night in is the easiest invitation of the season to host and the easiest to get slightly wrong. The host is on her feet more than anyone, carrying plates and opening doors, so the outfit is knit trousers or a knit dress with house shoes that have a real sole. Socks on a polished wooden floor are a hazard on the stairs, and so are many velvet and leather soles. If your home has stairs, choose a rubber sole: The Row's Hudson slippers, Prada's suede and shearling slippers and Roger Vivier's shearling-lined platform mules all have one, according to their listings.
- Black velvet and charcoal. The Row's black velvet Ponti slippers with charcoal cashmere knit trousers and a cream cardigan. Their soles are leather, so save them for a home without polished stairs.
- Ivory on ivory. Gabriela Hearst's Bristol slippers, made from a blend of alpaca, wool, cashmere and silk, with an ivory knit dress.
- A smoking slipper for later. Saint Laurent's leather Alain slippers, whose heel counter can be worn up or folded down, with black wide-leg trousers and a fine black turtleneck.
Keep a basket of clean, plain socks by the door for guests if you keep a shoes-off house; it is kinder than asking them to pad around in their tights. More options are in our slippers edit.

Winter wedding guest: the short version
December weddings follow the dress code on the invitation, and our winter wedding guest guide decodes each one. The short version: floor length for black tie, a midi for cocktail, long sleeves by default, a jewel tone or an evening dark rather than anything close to white, and a coat long enough to cover the dress between the car and the door. Carolina Herrera's forest-green draped jersey gown, Alaïa's red merino column and Etro's embroidered velvet gown with a turtleneck collar all have long sleeves, so you can leave the wrap at home.

What to wear to a Hanukkah dinner
Hanukkah 2026 begins at sundown on Friday, December 4, and ends at nightfall on Saturday, December 12, according to Hebcal. Two of the eight nights fall on a Friday, December 4 and December 11, and for both Hebcal's calendar lists the candles to be lit before sundown, the hour Shabbat begins. In a home that keeps Shabbat, a Hanukkah dinner on either Friday is also a Shabbat dinner. Chabad.org's guide for Shabbat dinner guests covers the courtesies: confirm with your hosts what time they would like you to arrive, dress a notch more formally than you would on a weekday, leave your phone in your bag and take no photographs, and bring any gift to the house before Shabbat starts rather than to the meal.
If it is your own family's table, you know its customs; the notes here are for a guest. What to wear depends on the household, so the simplest courtesy is to ask your hosts. If you cannot ask, dress modestly. Chabad.org's guide to Jewish clothing says women's clothing should cover the collarbone, upper arms and knees and should not be overly tight, that skirts or dresses are typically worn rather than trousers, and that many communities add their own standards. A midi or maxi skirt with a sleeved knit is right at almost any Hanukkah table, which is why our edit here is all skirts.
Two practical points. The menorah is often lit at a window or a doorway, and everyone gathers close, so wear sleeves that fit at the wrist and tie back long scarves before the blessing. Latkes and doughnuts are fried in oil, and wool and cashmere hold the smell of a frying pan: when you get home, lay your knit flat to air overnight rather than putting it straight back in a drawer.
- Charcoal pleats and navy. Max Mara's belted pleated cashmere-blend midi skirt with a fitted navy turtleneck and black suede knee boots.
- Black satin, ivory knit. Victoria Beckham's Isabella satin maxi skirt, with its puddle hem, an ivory fine-gauge sweater and black kitten heels.
- Burgundy and cream. Max Mara's deep-burgundy virgin-wool maxi skirt with a cream turtleneck and dark-brown suede boots.
- Black velvet and gold. Alaïa's cotton-velvet maxi skirt with a fitted black knit and gold earrings.

What to wear for the holidays when the plan is a party
Parties get their own guides, because the invitation changes everything. Our holiday party outfits guide decodes office, cocktail, festive and black-tie invitations. Christmas outfit ideas runs from Christmas Eve dinner through Christmas Day, church included. New Year's Eve outfits covers galas, dinners, clubs and midnight outdoors. And if you are choosing one dress to wear to several of them, the best holiday dresses sorts the season's options by fabric and length. To plan around something you already own, ask our AI stylist with the occasion, the venue and the piece you want to wear.
Winter holiday outfits: what to buy once, and what to enjoy for a season
Most of these pieces earn their keep long after January. The ones we would buy once and keep:
- Shearling-lined boots with a rubber sole. Worn from the first cold week of November to March, they cost little per wear.
- A tweed or bouclé jacket. It does brunch in December, the office in February and a spring evening over a dress.
- Easy-waist wool trousers. They travel, they host, and they pass for tailoring at a casual dinner.
- A hands-free bag that closes. Markets, airports and museums all reward it.
- House shoes with a real sole. You will wear them more than any evening shoe you own.
The sequined cardigan is the season's pleasure. Buy one if it makes you happy, in a color you already wear, but treat it as a December piece rather than a wardrobe foundation.
The mistakes we see most often are practical ones. People dress for the photograph instead of the temperature of the room, wear new shoes on the longest day of the year, pile three festive pieces into one outfit, and forget that a long skirt needs a long coat. Care matters too: fold sequined knits rather than hanging them, because the weight of the sequins stretches the shoulders, steam velvet rather than ironing it, and keep a suede brush by the door from now until spring.
How we chose
We built each edit around the hardest part of its occasion. Market bags had to close with a zip, a buckle or a flap and sit across the body; market boots had to be lined with or made of shearling and sit on a rubber or lug sole; concert dresses needed long sleeves; travel trousers needed an elastic or drawstring waist; skirts for the Hanukkah table had to reach the knee or below. We drew on 34 houses, from Saint Laurent and Alaïa to Toteme and Zimmermann, and left out pre-owned pieces. When we checked on October 19, 68 of the 72 garments and shoes were offered in four or more sizes. Prices run from under $500 for house slippers to about $5,000 for the dearest tweed jackets. Every color named above was checked against the product photograph, and where a retailer's color name and its picture disagreed, we chose another piece.
Frequently asked questions
What should I wear to a Christmas market?
Dress for standing still in the cold: one warm knit under a long coat, trousers or a long skirt, shearling-lined boots with a rubber sole, gloves and a crossbody or belt bag that closes. Choose a coat you can unbutton quickly for heated shops.
What do you wear to a holiday brunch?
A tweed or bouclé jacket over a fine knit, with dark jeans or tailored trousers and loafers or ballet flats. Save sequins and satin for the evening; in daylight, texture looks more festive than shine.
What should I wear to a Hanukkah dinner?
A midi or maxi skirt with a sleeved knit suits nearly every household. If your hosts are observant, cover the collarbone, upper arms and knees, and ask them if you are unsure. On the two Friday nights, December 4 and 11, the dinner is also a Shabbat dinner in many homes, so ask what time to arrive. Keep sleeves close at the wrist near the candles.
What is the most comfortable outfit for holiday travel?
Wool or cashmere trousers with an elastic or drawstring waist, one warm knit, a long coat you can use as a blanket and broken-in boots or sneakers. Since July 2025, passengers at domestic US airports can keep their shoes on at TSA screening.
What do you wear to a gift exchange party?
Dressy casual: a sequined or embellished knit with trousers or dark jeans, and flats you can sit on the floor in. Wear sequins over cotton or silk rather than fine cashmere, which they snag.
What should I wear to my in-laws' for the holidays?
Good knitwear and trousers you can sit on the floor in, nothing with a slogan, your own house shoes, and opaque pajamas with a robe if you are staying overnight. Change the top and add earrings for dinner.
