The Best Shearling Coats and Jackets, and How to Tell Real From Faux

The best shearling coats are cut from real lamb or sheep shearling: a single skin tanned with the fleece left on, so the suede or leather outside and the wool inside are one piece. For most city winters, buy a hip-length aviator or collarless jacket from a house such as Loewe, Toteme or Balmain. If you walk everywhere in real cold, go long, as Brunello Cucinelli, Jil Sander and Toteme cut theirs. This guide explains how to tell real shearling from faux and shearling-trimmed pieces, where the aviator jacket came from and how to wear it now, which cropped and long styles to buy, what the weight and warmth are really like, and how to clean and store a coat so it lasts.
Real shearling, faux shearling or shearling-trimmed?
Three different things are sold under the word "shearling", and the difference shows in warmth, weight and price. Shearling proper is the skin of a recently shorn sheep or lamb, tanned and dressed with the wool left on: suede on one side, clipped fleece on the other. Real shearling breathes, is more flexible and is much heavier and denser than the synthetic pile often sold as "sherpa".
| What to compare | Real shearling | Shearling-trimmed | Faux fur or faux shearling | Teddy pile |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | One skin: suede or leather outside, fleece inside (or worn fleece-out) | Leather, suede, wool or down with shearling at the collar, cuffs or lining | Polyester or polyester-blend pile on a fabric backing | Camel, alpaca or wool pile, often on a silk base |
| On the label | "100% shearling", "lamb shearling" or "dyed sheep", often with a fur origin | The body fabric first, then "trim: shearling" or "lining: shearling" | "Faux fur", "100% polyester" | Fiber content, such as camel and silk |
| Warmth | The highest, and it breathes | Depends on the body: a fully shearling-lined jacket is far warmer than a collar alone | Warm, but it doesn't breathe like wool | Warm for its weight; not wind- or rain-proof |
| Weight | Heaviest | Medium | Light | Light |
| Care | Specialist leather or fur cleaner | Specialist cleaner for the leather and trim | As the label says, often dry clean; keep from heat | Professional dry cleaning |
To check in person, turn back a cuff or look inside an unlined seam. Real shearling shows the wool growing from the skin; faux pile shows a knitted or woven backing. Synthetic pile also has a slight sheen, while the hide side of real shearling is matte. Online, read the composition line: the listings for the real coats below say "100% shearling", "lamb shearling" or "dyed sheep", and several name the country the skins came from, from Spain and Italy to Turkey.
The aviator jacket: the shearling style to buy first
The aviator is the shearling jacket everyone recognizes because it was built for a job. Leslie Irvin, a former Hollywood stuntman, had set up a manufacturing company in Letchworth, England, by 1926, and the British Air Ministry approved his sheepskin flying jacket for pilots in 1932, according to the Imperial War Museums: heavy sheepskin inside for insulation, leather outside for durability, and a large collar that turned up against the wind. In the United States, the Army Air Corps issued its Type B-3 flying coat on May 8, 1934, for open-cockpit and high-altitude flying, with shearling lining the body, the sleeves and the tall neck, as the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum records. The details designers still use come from those jackets: a zip front, a wide shearling collar that buckles closed at the throat, and a waist-length body.
Loewe's blouson is lamb leather lined and trimmed in shearling, with a buttoned front and a knitted rib hem, in tan with a cream collar: the most classic-looking jacket here. Balmain's two-tone biker adds an asymmetric zip and leather-bound seams. Isabel Marant's Charina is dark brown leather lined in shearling and closed with toggles. Miu Miu cuts its blouson from dyed sheep with a shirt collar and flap pockets; Prada makes an ivory shearling bomber with wool ribbing; and Alaïa's black bomber is boxy and cropped, with curved sleeves.
Fit an aviator over your thickest sweater. With your arms bent, the sleeves should still cover the wrist bone, and the collar should close without pulling across the chest.
- The classic: tan aviator, a white T-shirt, straight mid-blue jeans and brown ankle boots.
- Evening: black shearling bomber over a black slip dress, with knee boots.
- Tonal: ivory bomber, grey flannel trousers and a cream crewneck.

Cropped and collarless shearling jackets for women
The other way to wear shearling is fleece-side out, which reads softer and more feminine. Toteme's short coat is dyed lamb shearling with a silky finish, a straight cut and a round, collarless neckline. Bottega Veneta's blouson comes in a pale butter shade with ribbed cuffs and hem. Alaïa nips its ivory jacket at the waist before flaring it into a peplum, Zimmermann wraps its Valiant jacket with a leather belt, and Chloé makes a short zip-up jacket in brushed shearling. Isabel Marant's hooded Amiel is the exception, worn suede-side out with leather trims.
Fleece-out shearling adds volume, so keep what's underneath lean: slim or straight trousers, a column of fine knitwear, a pencil or slip skirt. A collarless jacket leaves the neck bare, so plan on a scarf or a turtleneck; our guide to the best designer scarves explains which scarves suit a collarless coat.
- Office: cognac collarless jacket, a black turtleneck, black straight trousers and loafers.
- Weekend: butter blouson, dark straight jeans, a grey sweatshirt and white sneakers.
- Dinner: ivory peplum jacket over a black silk slip dress and pointed boots.

Long shearling coats for real cold
A knee-length shearling coat is about as warm as city outerwear gets, and heavy with it. Brunello Cucinelli's belted coat, in plush taupe shearling, has a buttoned front, a concealable mock neck and deep side pockets. Jil Sander's black coat is long-haired shearling that closes with hooks. Toteme's collarless black coat is cut relaxed, with rounded shoulders and a hem that curves gently at the back, and Zimmermann's Valiant wrap coat is trimmed in lamb leather, with notched lapels and a detachable belt.
Three details decide how well a long coat works in the cold: whether it closes at the neck (high-collared and double-breasted styles keep out wind that open fronts let in), whether it can be belted (a belt pulls the weight in to the waist and stops drafts), and whether it has a vent or a wrap that lets you walk freely. For more long silhouettes, see all our coats, and for the season's other shapes, our report on coat trends for fall and winter.
- Commuter: belted taupe coat, a charcoal turtleneck, wide grey trousers and lug-sole boots.
- Monochrome: long black shearling coat, a black knit dress and black knee boots.
- Weekend away: dark wrap coat, a cream cable-knit, ecru jeans and brown suede boots.
Long shearling coats
Weight and warmth: what to expect
Real shearling is heavy: noticeably heavier than a wool coat of the same length, and the longer the coat, the more skins it takes. Try one on with the bag you carry every day, and walk. If a long style drags at your shoulders, a hip-length aviator gives you most of the warmth at a fraction of the weight.
- Warmth: the dense fleece traps warmth and, unlike synthetic pile, breathes. Hip-length covers most city winters with a knit underneath; for sustained cold and wind, choose a long, closed, belted coat.
- Indoors: shearling is hot on a train or in a shop. An open-front or collarless cut is easier to vent than a zipped aviator.
- Rain and snow: suede-side-out shearling marks in wet weather. Glazed, waxed or coated leather handles it better, which is why a leather aviator is the smarter buy for a rainy city.
- Color: chocolate, chestnut and cognac hide wear, bag-strap rub and city grime far better than ivory or butter, which show every mark. If you will wear the coat every day, go dark; keep pale shearling for a second coat.
Which shearling coat for your winter?
Match the coat to your weather and to how you get around, not only to your wardrobe.
| Your winter | Buy | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Cold, dry and windy, with a lot of walking | A long shearling coat that closes at the neck, double-breasted or belted | Maximum coverage, and nothing for the wind to get under |
| Wet: drizzle, sleet, slushy streets | A leather-side-out aviator, or shearling-trimmed leather | Smooth or coated leather sheds water that marks suede |
| Mostly driving or taxis | A hip-length aviator or cropped jacket | A long coat bunches in a car seat and is too hot for short hops |
| Mild, rarely below freezing | A shearling-trimmed jacket, a faux bomber or a teddy coat | You get the texture without overheating |
| A ski town, off the slopes | A long coat for evenings in town, an aviator for daytime | Shearling is for the village, not the mountain; wear technical outerwear to ski |

Shearling-trimmed coats and jackets
If you want the look without the weight, a shearling collar or lining on a leather, suede, wool or down coat is the answer, and it often suits milder climates better. Saint Laurent belts a brown suede jacket with a shearling collar; Valentino Garavani puts a shearling collar on an aged-leather biker; Victoria Beckham cuts a leather aviator with a plush shearling collar; and Chloé's cropped burgundy leather bomber has an oversized natural shearling collar. Brunello Cucinelli adds a detachable lamb-shearling collar to a wool-cashmere coat, and Moncler's Boedic down jacket has a long-haired shearling trim on the hood that detaches.
Check the lining. A shearling collar keeps your neck warm; a full shearling lining keeps all of you warm.

Faux shearling and fiber alternatives
Faux has improved, and demand is real: Trendalytics' fall/winter 2026 report counts structured faux fur among the fabrics leading outerwear demand, with market adoption up 22 percent. Stella McCartney, which says it has never used leather, feathers, fur or skins, makes a plush chocolate bomber in polyester faux fur. Zimmermann's Valiant bomber is 100 percent polyester, and Maison Margiela's is a plush polyester and viscose blend with ribbed trim at the collar and cuffs.
Max Mara's Teddy Bear Icon coat sits between the two worlds. Its listing describes a coat designed in 2013 from an '80s archive piece, in a pile fabric of 88 percent camel and 12 percent silk: no skin, but animal fiber. Choose faux or teddy if you want an animal-free coat (faux), a lighter one (both), or one for a climate that rarely freezes. Expect less breathability from synthetic pile, and keep it well away from irons and radiators, which can flatten it.

Shearling care: cleaning, drying and storage
Most of the real shearling coats in this guide carry the same instruction, "specialist clean", and Zimmermann's reads "dry clean by fur professional". Between cleanings, a few habits keep a coat looking new, most of them from Iowa State University Extension's leather care guidance.
- Brush it. Frequent brushing with a soft brush lifts surface dirt from suede.
- Protect the collar. Wear a scarf to keep perspiration and body oils off the collar.
- Dry it slowly. If it gets wet, let it air-dry on a broad hanger, away from radiators and hair dryers.
- Leave stains to a professional. Take spots to a suede and leather cleaner quickly, and don't try to remove them at home.
- Clean before you store. The Dry Cleaning and Laundry Institute advises cleaning garments before storage so hidden food and drink stains don't oxidize into yellow marks, and storing them somewhere cool, dry and ventilated, out of direct light and away from attics and basements.
- Skip the plastic. Don't store leather in a plastic bag; use a breathable cotton garment bag and a padded hanger that supports the shoulders.
- Don't buy it tight. Hides relax with wear and can shrink slightly in cleaning, so avoid a snug fit.
How we chose the best shearling coats
We started with real shearling from houses on Vêtir's luxury list, checked each listing's composition line against its photographs, then added shearling-trimmed pieces and clearly labeled faux and teddy alternatives. We favored styles available in at least three sizes, covered every length from cropped to below the knee, and ranged from faux bombers at the accessible end to Brunello Cucinelli's belted coat at the top. Nothing here is pre-owned. For outfit ideas around the coat you choose, ask our AI stylist; for more coats, see the best coats of the season and our full edit of faux fur and shearling.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between shearling and sheepskin?
Sheepskin is the general term for a sheep's hide tanned with its fleece intact. Shearling is sheepskin or lambskin from a recently shorn animal, so the fleece is short and even, which is what makes it wearable as a coat lining or a fleece-out jacket.
Is a shearling coat warmer than a wool coat?
Usually, yes. The dense fleece traps air and breathes, so a shearling coat is warmer than a single-layer wool coat of the same length. A shearling-trimmed coat is only as warm as its body fabric.
Can you wear shearling in the rain or snow?
Light snow and brief showers are fine if you let the coat air-dry away from heat afterward. Suede-side-out shearling marks in heavy rain, so for wet cities choose a glazed, waxed or coated leather finish.
How do you clean a shearling coat?
Brush it regularly and have it cleaned by a specialist leather or fur cleaner, especially before you store it for summer. Never machine wash it or dry it with heat.
How can you tell real shearling from faux?
Look at the reverse: real shearling is one piece, with the fleece growing from the skin, while faux pile sits on a fabric backing. Synthetic pile has a slight sheen, and the label will say "faux fur" or list polyester.
What is the best shearling jacket for women?
For most women, a hip-length leather jacket lined with shearling, such as Loewe's blouson or Isabel Marant's Charina: it is warm, copes with light rain and works over jeans and tailoring. For a softer look, choose a cropped fleece-out jacket from Toteme or Bottega Veneta, sized for a sweater underneath.
