What to Wear to a Formula 1 Race: Austin, Mexico City and Las Vegas, Seat by Seat

What to wear to a Formula 1 race, in short: dress for a long day on your feet in the open air. Wear flat boots or sneakers you have already broken in, layers you can tie on or peel off, sunglasses and a small cross-body bag, and pack earplugs. Grandstand tickets carry no dress code beyond each venue's rules, the F1 Paddock Club asks for smart casual, and a night race in the desert calls for a real coat. This fall, three North American rounds run close together on Formula 1's 2026 calendar: the United States Grand Prix at Circuit of The Americas in Austin (October 23–25), the Mexico City Grand Prix (October 30–November 1) and the Las Vegas Grand Prix (November 19–21).

Below: what works at every circuit, dress codes by ticket, each race in turn, the bag rules that decide which bag you carry, and a men's edit.

What to wear to a Formula 1 race: the rules for every circuit

A race weekend asks more of an outfit than a stadium game or a night at a restaurant. You walk from the shuttle or the parking lot to the gates, from the gates to your seat, and back out to the fan zones and food stands between sessions. You sit in the sun, then in the shade, then after dark. So the best F1 outfit starts with practical questions: can you stand in these shoes for eight hours, and where does the jacket go when you do not need it?

  • Shoes: flat or low, closed and already broken in. A lug sole, a stacked Western heel or a retro runner all work; a stiletto does not. Give new boots a week of wear at home before race day.
  • Layers: a day race can go from full sun to a cool evening, and a night race only gets colder. Carry a jacket light enough to tie around your waist, or a knit you can drape over your shoulders.
  • Ears: the cars are loud, and so are the concerts that follow the track action in Austin. Pack foam earplugs or noise-reducing earbuds in a small case.
  • Sun: sunglasses labeled for full UV protection, a cap you are happy to wear all day and sunscreen. In Austin, Circuit of The Americas' venue policies allow sunscreen in plastic bottles only, so leave the aerosol spray at the hotel.
  • Team colors: merch is part of the fun in the grandstands, and a scarf or a knit in your team's color is a more polished way to show support than a replica shirt. If a team is hosting you in its suite, leave a rival's kit at home: F1 Experiences warns that you may be asked to leave.

Three formulas that work at any circuit:

  1. Dark straight jeans, a knit polo, a suede jacket, flat ankle boots and a cross-body bag.
  2. Wide-leg wool trousers, a fine cashmere crewneck, a leather jacket and retro runners.
  3. A poplin shirt worn open over a tank, relaxed jeans, penny loafers and a cap, with the jacket saved for dusk.

For the shoes, Khaite's Apollo flat ankle boot zips up the back and The Row's stretch-suede Cindy boot pulls on; both sit close to the ankle, so they disappear under straight trousers. Miu Miu's mesh Retro Runner and Bottega Veneta's leather sneakers both sit on rubber soles, which grip concrete and grandstand steps better than leather does.

Grandstand, Paddock Club or team suite: dress codes by ticket

Grandstand and general admission tickets have no dress code beyond each venue's rules, and those rules are about content rather than style. Circuit of The Americas' code of conduct covers clothing its staff deem offensive, obscene or inappropriate, and last year's official Las Vegas guide required shirts and shoes and barred clothing with profane or offensive material. Hospitality is where the expectations rise.

The Paddock Club dress code, decoded

Formula 1 asks for smart-casual attire in the Paddock Club, and F1 Experiences, which sells the sport's official ticket packages, spells out that smart jeans and tailored shorts are fine while flip-flops, beach wear and gym wear are not. It also notes that almost every Paddock Club has an indoor, climate-controlled lounge, so your layers are for the time you spend outside it. In practice, dress as you would for a long lunch at a good restaurant, then adjust for a day outdoors. The Paddock Club package includes a pit-lane walk, when you stand close to the teams as they practice pit stops, so choose shoes that can take concrete and standing. Skip anything precious that can snag or stain: pale suede trousers and floor-length hems do not survive a day of stairs and grandstands.

Three Paddock Club formulas:

  1. A black single-breasted blazer, an ivory silk shirt, dark straight jeans and penny loafers.
  2. A charcoal cashmere polo, pleated wool trousers in a light taupe and retro runners.
  3. A tobacco wool blazer over a white tee with the same jeans and flat ankle boots.

Toteme's stretch-wool blazer and Max Mara's double-breasted broadcloth blazer, in tobacco, cover the jacket; Khaite's Abigail jeans are high-rise and straight, so they sit well under both. Brunello Cucinelli's pinstriped silk poplin shirt and The Row's Oashi cashmere polo handle the top half, and Loewe's pleated wide-leg trousers are the alternative to denim.

Austin Grand Prix outfit: Circuit of The Americas, October 23–25

Austin is the easiest race of the three to dress for, and the one where local style matters most. NOAA's 1991–2020 climate normals for Austin–Bergstrom International Airport put race-weekend highs near 80°F and lows in the mid-50s. Sunday's race starts at 3 p.m. local time, so plan for strong afternoon sun and a layer once it drops.

Formula 1's own Austin Paddock Club page says cowboy hats and boots are worn throughout, and that no other Paddock Club has such a bespoke dress code. You do not need a hospitality ticket to borrow the idea. Western boots are the most useful shoe of the weekend: the stacked heel walks better than it looks. Keep the rest of the outfit modern so the boots read as local style rather than costume: dark denim, a crisp shirt, a suede or leather jacket and one good belt. The first time you wear new boots, wear socks that come above the shaft so it does not rub bare skin.

Plan for the evening as well as the race. According to Circuit of The Americas, each race ticket includes the concerts on the Germania Insurance Super Stage on Friday, October 23 (Maroon 5) and Saturday, October 24 (Post Malone), plus Alesso's post-race set on Sunday, with the schedule subject to change. Your race-day outfit is also your concert outfit, hours later and several degrees cooler.

Three Austin formulas:

  1. Cognac suede Western boots, straight dark jeans, a white poplin shirt and a suede jacket tied at the waist.
  2. Burgundy Western ankle boots, black wide-leg trousers, a knit polo and a leather bomber for the concert.
  3. Mid-calf Western boots under a denim or suede midi skirt, with a fine-gauge cardigan over the shoulders.

Isabel Marant's Duerto, in cognac suede on a modest stacked heel, is the most wearable pair here. Gabriela Hearst's Capitana is the most traditional, a tall stitched boot in mahogany leather, while Valentino's embroidered burgundy ankle boots and Brunello Cucinelli's suede Western booties suit anyone who wants the silhouette without the full shaft. Browse all cowboy boots.

Mexico City Grand Prix: sun at altitude, October 30–November 1

The Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez sits in a city high above sea level, which means the midday sun feels stronger than the temperature suggests and mornings and evenings run cool. Sunday's race starts at 2 p.m. local time. Dress in light layers: a tee or poplin shirt under a jacket or overshirt you can remove, trousers rather than shorts, and flat shoes. Race Sunday also falls on November 1, during Día de Muertos, so if you plan to see the city afterwards, choose an outfit that can go from the stands to dinner without a stop at the hotel.

Sun protection is the priority here. Choose sunglasses with lenses big enough to shade the skin around your eyes, and a cap with a proper brim; a wide-brim hat blocks the view of the people behind you. Our edit of the best designer sunglasses for women goes deeper on frame shapes.

Three formulas for Mexico City:

  1. A cotton poplin shirt, relaxed jeans, a cap and retro runners, with a light suede jacket for the evening.
  2. A shirt dress, a leather belt, flat ankle boots and aviators.
  3. Wide-leg trousers, a cashmere tee, a denim jacket and loafers.

Bottega Veneta's Mitre aviators and Saint Laurent's oval frames are strong, simple shapes; Loewe's round Coil frames soften a square face; and Prada's black nylon baseball cap, with a full curved brim, goes with everything else here. Browse more sunglasses.

What to wear to F1 Las Vegas: a night race on the Strip, November 19–21

Las Vegas is the race people dress up for, and the easiest one to under-dress for. Qualifying starts at 8 p.m. on Friday, November 20, and the race at 8 p.m. on Saturday, November 21. NOAA's normals for Las Vegas put the temperature at about 64°F in mid-afternoon, around 54°F at the 8 p.m. start and about 51°F by 11 p.m. For the 2025 race, gates opened at 2:30 p.m., so a race day can stretch from daylight to late night; dress for the late night.

Last year's official A–Z guide shaped the outfit in three ways, and each is worth checking against the 2026 guide before you go. Road closures meant the organizers encouraged fans to walk from nearby hotels, so wear boots you can walk in. Umbrellas were not permitted, and the guide told fans to plan for a poncho or raincoat if rain was forecast. And there were no lockers, so whatever you wear in, you wear all night.

  • A real coat: a teddy, shearling, long leather or long wool coat. A cropped jacket over a slip dress is a daytime outfit.
  • Warmth underneath: a cashmere turtleneck or fine knit under the coat, and trousers or knee boots with tights rather than bare legs.
  • Small extras: leather gloves and a scarf that tucks into the coat. You will sit still for the length of a race.
  • Shine, if you want it: Las Vegas is the one race where a metallic knit or a sequined top under the coat looks right, especially if the night continues.

Three night-race formulas:

  1. A black leather trench, a cashmere turtleneck, wide-leg trousers and lug-sole boots.
  2. A teddy coat over a fine black turtleneck, a slip skirt, knee boots and opaque tights.
  3. A burgundy leather jacket, a black turtleneck, dark jeans and flat ankle boots.

Max Mara's Teddy Bear coat, an oversized double-breasted coat in wool-and-silk teddy, is the coat to choose if you feel the cold, and Toteme's black shearling coat is the sleeker alternative. Magda Butrym's double-breasted leather trench is long enough to cover a skirt, Burberry's belted Kensington trench jacket comes in burgundy lambskin, and Saint Laurent's black jacket has a removable shearling collar you can turn up against the wind off the track. For the layer underneath, The Row's ribbed Stepny turtleneck in wool and cashmere has a relaxed fit that sits well under a roomy coat. Our guide to the season's coat trends has more options.

Race-day bags: the Las Vegas and Austin rules, and bags that pass them

Bag rules are where most race-day outfits come unstuck, and the two US races set different ones. For the 2025 race, the Las Vegas Grand Prix's official A–Z guide allowed either a clear tote or backpack no bigger than 12 x 6 x 12 inches, or a small handbag or belt bag up to 6 x 9 inches that did not need to be clear, and every bag was subject to search. The rules can change, so check the 2026 guide on the organizers' site or in the official F1 Las Vegas app before you pack.

Austin is more relaxed. Circuit of The Americas allows bags up to 12 x 12 x 20 inches at major races, and small hand-held umbrellas are permitted. The exception is the Super Stage concert floor and loge upgrades: there, COTA allows only a clear tote up to 12 x 12 x 6 inches, a one-gallon clear bag or a clutch no bigger than 4.5 x 6.5 x 2 inches, which is smaller than any of our picks below.

At every race, a wallet on a chain or a mini cross-body bag is the right shape: hands free, nothing to set down on the floor, room for a phone, a card, earplugs and a lipstick. Wear it cross-body under your coat at the night race, where it stays warm and out of the way. Each of our picks is within 6 x 9 inches on its listed dimensions; check the measurements of anything else before race day. Christian Louboutin's transparent Bettina mini is the most literal answer to a clear-bag rule.

What men should wear to a Formula 1 race

The same rules apply to men: walkable shoes, layers and sunglasses. The two common misreads of the Paddock Club are a full suit that looks like a business meeting and gym clothes. Smart casual sits between them: a knit polo or an open-collar shirt, chinos or dark jeans, an unstructured jacket and loafers or clean suede sneakers. No tie.

  1. Grandstand in Austin or Mexico City: a suede jacket, a navy knit polo, stone chinos, navy suede sneakers and aviators.
  2. Paddock Club: the same polo under an unstructured jacket with pressed chinos; in Austin, suede Western boots under straight trousers fit the local dress code.
  3. Las Vegas at night: a cashmere overcoat over a cashmere half-zip, dark trousers, leather boots and gloves.

Zegna's Cashseta polo, in cashmere and silk, is smart enough for hospitality and soft enough for a day in the stands. Loro Piana's Roadster half-zip goes under a coat in Las Vegas or over a polo in Austin, Brioni's cashmere herringbone overcoat is the night-race layer, and Jil Sander's pull-on suede Western boots sit on rubber soles for the walk in. How we chose

  • Houses: only top luxury houses on Vêtir, spread across the edit, with no more than two pieces from one house in any module.
  • Walkability: flat soles, stacked Western heels or runner soles, and no stilettos. New boots, including every Western pair here, need breaking in before race day.
  • Weather: fabrics matched to NOAA's normals for each city, from cotton and suede in Austin to teddy, shearling, leather and cashmere in Las Vegas.
  • Rules: bags checked against their listed dimensions and last year's Las Vegas size limit; nothing that needs a locker.
  • Availability and price: every piece was live on Vêtir with sizes in stock when we checked, from about $490 for sunglasses to about $6,500 for outerwear.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a dress code for a Formula 1 race?

Not for grandstand or general admission tickets, beyond each venue's rules on offensive clothing (and, at last year's Las Vegas race, shirts and shoes). The F1 Paddock Club asks for smart casual, and team hospitality guests should not wear a rival team's kit.

What is the Paddock Club dress code?

Smart casual. F1 Experiences, which sells the sport's official packages, says smart jeans and tailored shorts are fine, while flip-flops, beach wear and gym wear are not. In Austin, cowboy hats and boots are part of the Paddock Club look.

What should I wear to the Las Vegas Grand Prix?

Dress for a cold night. NOAA's normals put Las Vegas at about 54°F at the 8 p.m. race start and around 51°F by 11 p.m. Wear a teddy, shearling, leather or wool coat over a cashmere layer, trousers or knee boots with tights, walkable boots, gloves and a small bag that meets the organizers' size rule.

Can you wear heels to an F1 race?

We would not. You will walk and stand for hours, often on concrete and stairs. A stacked Western heel or a block heel under two inches is the most we would wear; everything else calls for flats, boots or sneakers.

Do you need ear protection at a Formula 1 race?

Yes, bring it. The cars and the evening concerts are loud. Foam earplugs or noise-reducing earbuds are enough; at the 2025 Las Vegas race, the organizers gave out earplugs free at medical, guest services and accessibility points.

What bag can I take to F1 Las Vegas?

For 2025, the rule was a clear tote or backpack up to 12 x 6 x 12 inches, or a small handbag or belt bag up to 6 x 9 inches. Check the 2026 guide before you go. In Austin, Circuit of The Americas allows bags up to 12 x 12 x 20 inches.
