What to Wear to the Super Bowl: Stadium, Suite and Watch-Party Outfits

What to wear to the Super Bowl, in short: dress for a long afternoon and evening on your feet and in a stadium seat. Wear flat shoes you have already broken in, a jacket you are happy to have with you for the whole game and one piece in your team's color, and carry a bag that passes the NFL's clear-bag policy: a clear bag no larger than 12 x 6 x 12 inches, plus, if you want one, a small bag no larger than 4.5 x 6.5 inches. Super Bowl LXI is played on Sunday, February 14, 2027, at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, according to the NFL's calendar of important dates, two weeks after the AFC and NFC Championship Games on January 31.

Below: dressing for the stadium, the bag rules and the bags that pass them, team colors without a replica jersey, what to wear in a suite, and the Super Bowl party outfit, which this year is also a Valentine's Day outfit.

What to wear to the Super Bowl at SoFi Stadium

Los Angeles hosts this year's game sixty years after the first Super Bowl was played at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, as the LA Super Bowl Host Committee points out. SoFi Stadium changes the usual cold-weather football calculation in two ways. Its A–Z guide describes a fixed roof, 60 percent of it transparent, so rain is not the problem in your seat, though the stadium says it lets you see the sun and sky: bring sunglasses for an afternoon kickoff. And once you are in, you stay in. Guests may not leave and re-enter on the same ticket, so whatever you wear through security stays with you until the game ends.

Outside the bowl, February in Los Angeles is mild but not warm. NOAA's 1991–2020 climate normals for Los Angeles International Airport, about three miles from the stadium, put a typical February 14 at a high near 66°F and a low near 50°F, with the hourly normals falling from about 62°F at 3 p.m. to about 58°F at 6 p.m. That is the temperature for the walk from the parking lot or shuttle, the plazas before kickoff and the slow exit afterward. Dress for 58°F with a layer you can open.

Two stadium rules shape the rest. SoFi's stadium policies bar clothing that is "commercial, obscene, offensive, inflammatory or political in nature," so leave slogan T-shirts at home. And the stadium is cashless, which suits a small bag: a phone, a card, an ID and a lip balm are all you need to carry.

Three stadium formulas:

  1. A leather or suede bomber over a cashmere crewneck in your team's color, dark straight jeans, clean leather sneakers and a micro bag worn cross-body.
  2. A satin bomber over a white T-shirt, wide-leg wool trousers, loafers, a plain clear tote and a micro bag on a chain.
  3. A fine-gauge knit dress with opaque black tights, flat knee boots and a cropped leather jacket.

The jacket does the most work, because it stays with you all game. A bomber is the right shape for a stadium seat: it ends at the hip, so it does not bunch when you sit, and its ribbed cuffs and hem keep out the evening air. Leather and suede block wind better than a knit, and satin with striped rib trim looks most at home at a football game. Loewe, Tod's and Bottega Veneta make bombers in satin, suede and nylon with leather trims; a deep-red leather jacket, such as Isabel Marant's, doubles as a team color. Browse all bomber jackets.

Shoes for the walk in

Expect to walk: through security screening, from the parking lot or shuttle drop-off, up and down the stairs to your seats and along the concourse at halftime. Wear flat, closed shoes with rubber soles that you have already worn for a full day. Leather sneakers are the most useful answer, because a clean white or black pair works with jeans, wide-leg trousers and a knit dress alike. Leave heels for the party afterward: stadium stairs, a crowd and a drink in one hand are a poor combination for a stiletto.

The Super Bowl bag policy, and bags that pass it

The NFL's clear-bag policy applies at every NFL stadium, and SoFi Stadium's own rules match it. Each fan may carry one clear bag made of plastic, vinyl or PVC no larger than 12 x 6 x 12 inches, or a one-gallon clear plastic freezer bag. Alongside it, you may carry one small bag that is not clear, as long as it measures no more than 4.5 x 6.5 inches, with or without a handle or strap. Medically necessary items are allowed after inspection. Both the NFL and SoFi strongly encourage fans not to bring bags at all. SoFi runs a bag valet, for a fee, at select events; otherwise a bag that breaks the rules goes back to your car or is thrown away. SoFi also notes that its bag rules can vary by event, so read the Know Before You Go details sent before the game.

The small-bag limit is the one to measure. At 4.5 x 6.5 inches it rules out many bags sold as minis: both the width and the height have to fit, so a slim bag seven inches wide still fails. The right size is also the most practical way to carry at a game: worn cross-body, it leaves both hands free and never touches the floor. Each of the bags we chose below measured within 4.5 x 6.5 inches on its listed dimensions when we checked, but listings change and stock rotates, so confirm the dimensions of any bag, ours included, before game day.

  • Split the load. Phone, card and ID go in the small bag; sunglasses, a battery pack and anything bulky go in the clear one.
  • Keep the clear bag plain. The fine print rules out most embellishment. The NFL allows a logo on one side only and bars buckles, hardware or décor that hide any part of the bag, and SoFi requires clear bags to be completely clear, with no tint, hologram, printed pattern or stickers. Carry a simple clear tote and let the small bag be where the luxury goes.
  • Carry warmth on your body. The NFL lets fans carry a blanket through screening over a shoulder or arm, and SoFi permits non-heated blankets. A large cashmere wrap worn over the shoulders does the same job and looks like part of the outfit.

Game day outfit: team colors without the replica jersey

A replica jersey is the fan's uniform, and it is fine in the stands. If you would rather look dressed, put your team's main color into one strong piece and keep everything else neutral: a red knit with black jeans and a black leather jacket reads as a fan who got dressed rather than as a costume. Knitwear is the easiest place for color because a saturated crewneck sits close to the face, where it shows in every photo, and it layers under any jacket.

  • One color, one piece. The knit or the jacket carries the color; jeans, trousers, shoes and bag stay black, navy, white or camel.
  • Two-color teams. Wear the main color on top and the second in a small dose: a scarf, a bag or the trim on a sneaker.
  • Adjust the depth. If a team's shades are very bright, a deeper version of the same color, such as burgundy for red or navy for royal blue, still reads as support and is easier to wear.
  • As a guest. If friends invite you to sit with their side, wear their color or none. Their rival's color in their section is the one real mistake.
  • Costume pieces. SoFi's policies allow soft headpieces but not hard-shelled football helmets, and nothing may hide your face at the security and ticket checkpoints.

Three team-color formulas:

  1. A red lace-up knit, black straight jeans, a black leather bomber and black leather sneakers.
  2. A cobalt crewneck, cream wide-leg trousers, a suede bomber and white sneakers.
  3. A yellow knit with black trousers, a black jacket and a black micro bag. Yellow looks sharper against black than against blue denim.

Burberry's cashmere crewnecks and Loewe's wool knits come in saturated shades, and a lace-up neckline gives a knit a sporty feel without a single logo. Browse all sweaters, or see our edit of the best cashmere sweaters.

Super Bowl suites and hospitality: what to wear

On Location, which sells the official Super Bowl ticket and hospitality packages, publishes no dress code for them that we could find, and the stadium's clothing rules apply to every ticket. In practice, a suite is closer to a long lunch than to a stadium seat: you stand, talk and eat for hours, often with people you are meeting for the first time. Dress smart casual, keep one accent in your team's color and keep the shoes low.

Three suite formulas:

  1. Pleated wool trousers, a silk shirt, a leather jacket and loafers, with a silk scarf in your team's color knotted at the neck.
  2. A cashmere polo in the team color, dark straight jeans, a navy blazer and leather sneakers.
  3. A fine black turtleneck, a leather midi skirt, flat knee boots and a micro bag on a chain.

Choose a jacket you can take off, and wear something underneath that looks finished on its own. The leather jackets above work here too; with a silk shirt they read as dressed rather than dressed up.

Super Bowl party outfit: watch parties and a Valentine's Day kickoff

This year the Super Bowl falls on Valentine's Day, and Presidents' Day follows on Monday, February 15, so the game sits in the middle of a long weekend of plans. A watch party is dressy casual at most. You will sit on a sofa for hours, reach across a coffee table and eat with your hands, so choose comfort first and fabric second: cashmere, wool and heavy cotton look deliberate on a sofa in a way that jersey sweats do not.

  • As a guest: cashmere sweatpants with a crisp poplin shirt and loafers, or dark jeans with a good knit. If the party turns into dinner, add earrings and swap the sneakers for a flat.
  • As the host: you will be on your feet and near the food. Skip white silk and trailing sleeves, choose a dark knit that forgives a splash of sauce, and wear flat shoes.
  • For Valentine's Day: if dinner follows the game, a red cardigan buttoned as a top, with black trousers, covers both. For the dinner itself, see our Valentine's Day outfits guide, and send your date to our men's date night edit.

Three watch-party formulas:

  1. Navy cashmere sweatpants, a white poplin shirt, a camel cardigan and suede loafers.
  2. A red cardigan buttoned to the neck, black straight jeans, ballet flats and gold hoops.
  3. A gray knit set, a scarf in your team's color and white leather sneakers.

Cashmere sweatpants from The Row and Loro Piana look deliberate with a shirt and loafers; a tapered leg dresses up more easily than a wide one. Browse all sweatpants.

How we chose

  • Rules first: each small bag we picked measured within the NFL's 4.5 x 6.5-inch limit on its listed dimensions when we checked, and each can be worn on a strap or chain.
  • Walkability: flat sneakers with rubber soles, and no heels anywhere in the stadium edit.
  • Weather: leather, suede, satin and cashmere for a February afternoon that cools toward 58°F by 6 p.m.
  • Color: knits chosen from the product photographs rather than the retailer's color names, which are sometimes wrong.
  • Houses and availability: all 31 picks, from the stadium bombers to the micro bags, come from top luxury houses on Vêtir; no house supplies more than two pieces to a module; and each was live when we checked, with sizes still in stock.
  • No affiliation: Vêtir is not affiliated with the NFL, its teams or SoFi Stadium, and nothing here carries a team logo. Team colors are just colors.

Frequently asked questions

What should I wear to the Super Bowl?

Flat shoes you have broken in, a jacket you can wear for the whole game, one piece in your team's color and a bag that meets the NFL's clear-bag policy. At SoFi Stadium you sit under a fixed, partly transparent roof and cannot re-enter, so dress for the walk in and out as well as the seat.

What bags are allowed at the Super Bowl?

One clear plastic, vinyl or PVC bag no larger than 12 x 6 x 12 inches, or a one-gallon clear plastic freezer bag, plus one small bag no larger than 4.5 x 6.5 inches, with or without a strap. A clear bag must be completely clear, with a logo on one side at most. Medically necessary items are allowed after inspection.

Is there a dress code at the Super Bowl?

There is no formal dress code. SoFi Stadium prohibits clothing that is commercial, obscene, offensive, inflammatory or political in nature. For a suite, we would dress smart casual.

What is the weather like for the Super Bowl in Los Angeles?

Mild. NOAA's climate normals for Los Angeles International Airport, about three miles from SoFi Stadium, put February 14 at a high near 66°F and a low near 50°F, with about 58°F at 6 p.m. The roof keeps rain off the seats; bring a jacket for the walk in and out.

What should I wear to a Super Bowl party?

Dressy casual: dark jeans or cashmere sweatpants with a good knit or a crisp shirt, and flat shoes. This year the game falls on Valentine's Day, so a red knit that also works at dinner covers both plans.

What do you wear in a Super Bowl suite?

Smart casual: tailored trousers or dark jeans, a silk shirt or cashmere polo, a leather jacket or blazer, and loafers or clean leather sneakers, with your team's color as one accent.
