Valentine's Day Gifts for Her, Matched to How Long You Have Been Together

The best Valentine's Day gifts for her fit the stage of your relationship. In the first months, give something small and personal that asks for nothing in return: heart studs in 18-karat gold, a delicate bracelet, a rose-scented candle for the dinner you are cooking. After a year or two, give what she will wear every day: earrings, a pendant, a fragrance she has told you she loves. For a long-term partner, go further: a ring in her size, silk to sleep in, or a bag she will carry for years. Valentine's Day 2027 falls on Sunday, February 14, which is also Super Bowl Sunday and the middle of the Presidents' Day long weekend, so plan the dinner and the gift around it. Below: the dates, gifts by relationship stage and budget, how to get her ring and bracelet size without asking, which perfume strength to buy, and our edits in each category.

Valentine's Day 2027: the dates to plan around

Two practical points. We cannot promise delivery dates, because pieces on Vêtir ship from the retailers and houses that sell them, so order in January rather than the week of. And read the return policy on the product page before you pay. Each retailer sets its own window, some jewelry has a shorter one than the 30 days most items carry, and final-sale pieces cannot be returned at all, so a piece bought in mid-January may no longer be returnable by February 14.

Valentine's Day gifts for her, by relationship stage

A Valentine's gift carries a message whether you intend one or not, and the same object can say "thoughtful" in one relationship and "too much, too soon" in another. This is the logic our editors use.

Where you areWhat worksWhat to leave for laterA sensible budget
The first Valentine's (weeks to about six months)Small, personal, easy to accept: heart studs, a delicate bracelet, a crystal heart, a rose candle for dinnerRings of any kind, lingerie, anything sized, a perfume chosen for herUnder $600
Established (one to three years)What she will wear daily: earrings, a pendant, the scent she has named, a small leather good in redA new signature scent picked by you; big logos unless she wears them$500 to $4,500
Living together or engagedThings for the life you share: silk pajamas, a weekend away, the bag she has mentioned twiceAnything practical for the home$700 to $3,500
Married or long-termThe milestone: a ring for her right hand, a bracelet she keeps on, an upgrade of the jewelry she wears every dayRepeats of last year's category$1,000 and up

Whatever the stage, write the card. A line about why you chose the piece (the earrings she keeps borrowing, the scent she wore on your first trip) does more for the gift than another hundred dollars.

Romantic gifts for her that are not a cliché

The Valentine's symbols work when they come in a grown-up form. Hearts are lovely in solid gold or clear crystal and awkward in plush; roses are better in a bottle or a candle than in a bouquet that is dead by Wednesday; red is striking in leather or on a silk square, and a risk in lingerie unless you know her taste very well. For a first Valentine's, one of these is enough. The charm bracelet below is gold-tone fashion jewelry rather than fine jewelry, which keeps it light enough to accept.

Jewelry, the classic Valentine's gift, and how to get her size right

Jewelry is where the Valentine's money goes, if not the most gifts. In the National Retail Federation's survey for Valentine's Day 2026, a quarter of consumers planned to buy jewelry, yet shoppers expected to spend more on it than on anything else: $7 billion, ahead of $6.3 billion on an evening out. The risk with jewelry is size, and the fix is to know which pieces need one.

Hearts are the obvious motif and, in gold, the best version of it: an open heart outlined in diamonds, heart-shaped diamonds in a small stud, a rose-gold outline that reads as a line drawing, or one heart split in two on a pair of chains, one half for each of you. Jennifer Meyer, Repossi and Anita Ko do this with the lightest touch, and our fine jewelry gift guide explains karat, stones and paperwork in more depth.

Rings: decide the finger, then find the size

A ring says more than any other gift, so choose the finger before the ring. In the US, a ring on the left ring finger reads as an engagement ring; unless that is the message, give a band for her right hand, or a slim ring to stack on the index or middle finger. For the size, the GIA suggests borrowing a ring she wears on the same finger and having a jeweler measure it on a mandrel, and it flags two traps: for a right-handed woman, the left ring finger is typically about half a size smaller than the right, and a wide band fits more snugly than a thin one, so size up slightly for it. Our fine jewelry gift guide also covers the European ring sizes several houses use. Stock is the last constraint: many rings are listed in only a handful of sizes at any one time, so if hers is not available, give a pendant now and a ring on an anniversary.

Bracelets: measure below the wrist bone

David Yurman's bracelet size guide measures just below the wrist bone and describes how each type should fit: a bangle should slide over the hand and rest securely on the wrist, a cuff should sit snug with little movement, and a chain can be looser. The house's women's sizes run from extra small, for wrists of about 5 to 5.5 inches, to extra large, for 7 to 7.5 inches. Chain bracelets with an adjustable clasp are the forgiving choice if you can only estimate.

Necklaces and earrings: no size needed

Pendants need no size, only a length: on most women a 16-inch chain rests near the base of the neck and an 18-inch one around the collarbone, so copy the length of a necklace she already wears. For earrings, check whether the listing is for a pair or a single (several fine jewelers sell earrings individually for second and third piercings), and whether she wears studs, huggies or drops.

More in rings and necklaces.

Perfume for Valentine's Day: which strength to buy

Perfume is the most romantic gift on this list and the easiest to get wrong. Give it only when she has told you what she wears or wants, or when you have noticed the bottle on her dresser. If you are buying blind, our guide to choosing a perfume for someone else explains how to narrow a scent family, and why a discovery set is the honest alternative.

Once you know the scent, read the word under its name. The eau de toilette and the eau de parfum of one fragrance, as Diptyque describes them, are two readings of the same story, the first lighter and livelier, the second more intense and longer-lasting. A parfum or extrait, where the house makes one, is the richest version. Houses set their own concentrations, so treat the words as a guide to character rather than a formula, and buy by what she already wears:

  • She wears the eau de toilette: the eau de parfum of the same scent, if the house makes one, is the natural step up and the better choice for an evening.
  • She wears the eau de parfum: the parfum or extrait is the deeper version. It can be composed a little differently, so give it as a variation to enjoy rather than a stronger copy.
  • She loves her scent exactly as it is: give the same strength in a larger bottle.
  • The bottle says "intense" or "elixir": read the house's description before you assume it is the same perfume made stronger.

Rose is the Valentine's note for good reason, and it now comes in every register, from a dewy eau de toilette to a dark, spiced eau de parfum and perfumed oils worn straight on the skin. Houses such as Guerlain and Maison Francis Kurkdjian each make more than one rose, so if she loves roses, match the mood as well as the flower.

Red and pink leather: small pieces that read as Valentine's

If you want the gift to say Valentine's without a heart on it, give the color. A small leather piece in red, burgundy or pink is used every day, which is more than can be said for most red things given on February 14. Choose the shade by her wardrobe: burgundy and oxblood sit comfortably with the black, camel and navy of a winter wardrobe, while a true red or a pink is for someone who already wears color. Pouches that take a phone, cards and a lipstick double as evening bags, which makes them especially useful for the dinner itself.

Silk to sleep in, for a long-term partner

Sleepwear is the most intimate gift here and belongs to a relationship where you know her size and her taste. Silk pajamas from Toteme, Saint Laurent and Valentino are cut like relaxed shirts, trousers and shorts, so buy the size she wears in a relaxed shirt; the tops are generous, and pajama bottoms usually have an elasticated or drawstring waist. A matching top and bottom is the full gesture, a top or a pair of shorts the lighter one. Silk often asks for dry cleaning or a gentle hand wash, so check the care label before you give it to someone who hates laundry.

More in pajamas and sleepwear.

The big gesture: a bag for the partner of many years

A bag is the gift for a partner whose wardrobe you know well: which shapes she carries, whether her hardware is gold or silver, how much she fits in an evening bag. Valentine's is the one day a heart-shaped or deep red bag makes sense as a first choice rather than a novelty. Alaïa's heart silhouette is the most literal, Khaite and Gabriela Hearst make the quieter red evening bags, and a small bag on a chain will see her through far more dinners than February's. If she has mentioned a specific bag, give that one; a guessed bag is the most expensive way to miss.

If you are planning the evening too, dinner and date night is one of the three occasions our clients most often ask our AI stylist to dress them for; describe the restaurant and it will build the look. Our guide to Valentine's date-night outfits covers what to wear, and one stylist's own picks are in Gloria Nakash's Valentine's gift guide.

How we chose

  • By stage, not just price: each edit answers one relationship stage, so a first Valentine's is not sold a ring and a twentieth anniversary is not sold a candle.
  • Houses: top luxury houses carried on Vêtir only, with fine jewelers such as Jennifer Meyer, Messika and Anita Ko beside the fashion names, and never more than three from a single house in one section.
  • Sizes checked: we favored rings stocked in several sizes, and one-size earrings, pendants and bags; where a piece is sized, we say how to find the size.
  • Live and new: every gift here could be bought by US shoppers at the time we checked, and none of it is pre-owned or marked down. We looked at every photograph and read every listing for metal, stone and fiber.
  • Refills: a sold-out gift is replaced by a similar piece in the same price range, so each stage's budget still holds.

Frequently asked questions

When is Valentine's Day 2027?

Sunday, February 14, 2027. It is also Super Bowl Sunday, and Presidents' Day falls on the Monday, so many couples will have a three-day weekend.

What is a good Valentine's gift for a girlfriend of a few months?

Something small and personal that she can accept easily: 18-karat gold heart studs, a delicate bracelet, a rose-scented candle or a rose eau de toilette she has mentioned. Avoid rings, lingerie and anything that needs her size.

How much should I spend on a Valentine's gift for her?

Match the spend to the stage rather than a number: under $600 is right for a first Valentine's, while established couples can move into fine jewelry. The card matters more than the price at every stage.

Can I give a ring for Valentine's Day without it looking like a proposal?

Yes. Choose a band for her right hand, or a slim ring to stack on her index or middle finger, and avoid a solitaire diamond. In the US, a ring worn on the left ring finger reads as an engagement ring.

Is perfume a good Valentine's gift?

Yes, when you know what she wears. Give her scent in its richer eau de parfum or parfum, or the same strength in a larger bottle. If you would be guessing, a discovery set lets her choose the full bottle herself.

Is jewelry too much for a new relationship?

Not if it is small and not a ring. Gold studs or a delicate bracelet read as thoughtful; a ring, or anything in the thousands, can feel like a statement she did not ask for.
