Valentine's Day Gifts for Him That He Will Wear, Use and Keep

Valentine's Day Gifts for Him That He Will Wear, Use and Keep

The best Valentine's Day gifts for him are things he will wear or use within the week: a sterling silver chain or a pair of cufflinks, the parfum version of the scent he already wears, a cashmere hoodie for the weekend, velvet loafers for the dinner, or a weekend bag for a trip you take together. Match the gift to how long you have been together: small and wearable in the first months, more personal after a year or two, generous for a husband. And check the calendar: Valentine's Day 2027 falls on Sunday, February 14, the same day as Super Bowl LXI, with Presidents' Day on the Monday. Below: how to plan around the game, Valentine's gifts by relationship stage and budget, how to get his sizes right without asking, and our edits in each category.

Valentine's Day 2027 is also Super Bowl Sunday

In 2027 the Super Bowl and Valentine's Day share a date: the NFL's calendar puts Super Bowl LXI at SoFi Stadium on Sunday, February 14, and Washington's Birthday, the federal holiday better known as Presidents' Day, falls on Monday, February 15. If he will be watching, do not compete with the game; use the whole weekend instead.

  • Saturday the 13th: the dinner. Give the velvet loafers that morning so he can wear them to it.
  • Sunday the 14th: the main gift over breakfast, and the game in the afternoon, in the cashmere hoodie.
  • Monday the 15th: the holiday, and the end of a weekend away if the gift was a bag and a plan.

If you are hosting or going to a watch party yourself, our guide to what to wear to a Super Bowl party has the looks.

Valentine's Day gifts for him, by relationship stage

Luxury gifts for a boyfriend

With a boyfriend, the gift should show that you notice him rather than that you want to dress him. Look at what he already wears and give the better version of it: the silver chain he would never splurge on, the parfum of the cologne on his shelf, a cashmere hoodie in the gray he always chooses. Leave the statement pieces, the loud logos and anything that needs his exact size until you know them for certain.

Romantic gifts for him: silver he will actually wear

Men's jewelry works as a Valentine's gift when it is plain, solid and easy to live with. Sterling silver chains, a leather cord finished in silver, and cufflinks are the easiest pieces to fold into what he already wears. David Yurman's cable and box chains, Bottega Veneta's leather-and-silver bracelets and Tom Ford's understated silver are the places we start. Fendi and Saint Laurent also make men's pieces in sterling silver, but other pieces from both houses are brass or plated metal that only looks like silver, so read the listing for the metal. Three checks before you buy:

  • His wrist. David Yurman's bracelet size guide measures just below the wrist bone, and its men's sizes run larger than its women's, from extra small for wrists of about 6.5 to 7 inches to extra large for 8.5 to 9 inches. If you can only estimate, a wrapped leather bracelet or a chain with a clasp forgives more than a cuff.
  • His shirts. Cufflinks need French (double) cuffs, or convertible cuffs with a buttonhole on each side. If his shirts all button at the wrist, choose a bracelet or a chain instead.
  • His ring size, if you choose a ring. Borrow a ring he wears on the same finger and have a jeweler measure it. The GIA notes that wide bands fit more snugly and usually need a slightly larger size, which matters for a signet ring.

Fragrance: the parfum of the scent he already wears

If he wears a scent, the easiest romantic upgrade is its richer version. Diptyque describes a scent's eau de toilette and eau de parfum as two readings of one story, one lighter and livelier, the other more intense and longer-lasting. A parfum or extrait is richer again, and many of the best-known men's scents are made in one or both of those stronger versions, so read the label on his bottle before you buy.

Two cautions. First, the richer version is a variation, not a stronger copy: houses set their own concentrations and can adjust the composition at each strength. Second, words such as "intense" or "elixir" on a bottle can mark a different fragrance rather than a stronger one, so read the house's description. If he loves his scent exactly as it is, give the larger bottle of the same one. And if he does not wear a scent, do not choose one for him; give something from another section. Our guide to luxury perfume gifts explains the labels in more detail.

Cashmere for the game, the sofa and the long weekend

A cashmere hoodie or quarter-zip is the Valentine's gift that fits a Super Bowl Sunday: soft enough for the sofa, smart enough for a Monday lunch, and warm on a February flight. Gray and charcoal are the safe choices; burgundy is the Valentine's shade that is easiest to wear. Brunello Cucinelli and Gabriela Hearst make the plainest versions, with little or no visible branding.

Sizing is the only hard part. Italian houses often size knitwear in European numbers (46, 48, 50 and up) while others use letters, so read the label of the sweater he wears most, ideally from the same house, and compare it with the size chart on the product page. A relaxed hoodie forgives an in-between size better than a slim crewneck, and the label should say 100 percent cashmere or name each fiber in a blend.

  • Game day: a charcoal cashmere hoodie over a white T-shirt, dark jeans and suede sneakers.
  • The Monday lunch: a burgundy quarter-zip over an open-collar shirt with gray flannel trousers.

For how to judge the knit itself, read our guide to the best cashmere sweaters for men.

Velvet loafers for the Valentine's dinner

Velvet loafers are the most romantic shoe a man can own and one of the most useful: they work with a tuxedo, with a dark suit, and with dark jeans and a roll-neck at a candlelit dinner. Black velvet goes with everything; navy or bottle green is for a man who already wears color. Christian Louboutin, John Lobb, Manolo Blahnik and Tom Ford all make them, from the plain slipper to versions with a bow or a penny strap.

Shoes need his size, so check which scale the listing uses. The loafers here come in three: UK sizes, which run about one below US sizes (John Lobb lists a UK 9 as a US 10D); European sizes such as 42 or 43; and US sizes, sometimes with a width letter. Check the size chart on the product page against the shoes he wears most, and choose these only if you know his size in at least one of the three systems. Ask our AI stylist to build the rest of the dinner outfit around them.

A weekend bag for the Presidents' Day long weekend

With a federal holiday on the Monday, Valentine's weekend 2027 is a natural three-day trip, and the most romantic version of a bag is one given with the plan already made. Choose by how you will travel. Leather, from Berluti's patinated Venezia to smooth calfskin, ages well and suits a car trip; suede is softer and lighter but needs care in rain; canvas with leather trim is the most practical for a flight. If you are flying, check the airline's carry-on dimensions before you buy: a full-size weekender has to fit the overhead bin.

For a husband: pajamas and a proper robe

Sleepwear is the most personal gift here, which is why it belongs to a long relationship. Silk looks and feels like an occasion; cotton and cotton-silk are easier to care for. Pajama shirts come in letter sizes or by collar measurement, like dress shirts, so check which the listing uses against a shirt he owns; robes are the forgiving choice if you are unsure. A robe that hangs on the back of his bathroom door for years is a better Valentine's gift than anything he will use once.

How we chose

  • Things he will use this month: every edit here is worn or used within days of Valentine's, from the dinner to the game to the long weekend.
  • Houses: top luxury houses carried on Vêtir, Tom Ford, Brunello Cucinelli and Saint Laurent among them, capped at three pieces from any one house per section.
  • Sizes: for sized pieces we favored styles stocked in several sizes, and we explain how to find his.
  • Live and new: from the silver chains to the weekenders, each piece was available to US shoppers at full price when we checked, and none is pre-owned. We looked at every photograph and read each listing for fiber, metal and size.
  • Refills: when a pick sells out before the fourteenth, its section fills the gap with a similar piece at the same price level.

Frequently asked questions

What do you get your boyfriend for Valentine's Day?

A better version of something he already uses: a sterling silver chain or bracelet, the parfum of the scent he wears, or a cashmere hoodie in the color he always chooses. Keep sized gifts and statement pieces for later.

What is a good Valentine's gift for a husband who has everything?

Something to share rather than own: a weekend bag given with a trip already booked, or pajamas and a robe for Sunday mornings. If he loves an object, a signet ring or a watch marks a milestone.

Is jewelry a good Valentine's gift for a man?

Yes, if it is plain and easy to wear: a silver chain, a leather-and-silver bracelet, or cufflinks if he wears double cuffs. Avoid rings unless you know his size.

What is the difference between eau de toilette and parfum?

Strength. A parfum is the richer, longer-lasting version of a scent and an eau de toilette the lighter one, and each house sets its own concentrations. The parfum can also be composed a little differently, so it is a variation on his scent, not a copy.

How do I find out his size without asking?

Read the labels of the sweater, shirt and shoes he wears most, ideally from the same houses, and note whether they use letters, European numbers or UK shoe sizes. For bracelets, measure his wrist just below the wrist bone; for rings, borrow one he wears.

What if Valentine's Day is on Super Bowl Sunday?

In 2027 it is. Hold the dinner on Saturday or on Presidents' Day Monday, give the gift on Sunday morning, and let the afternoon belong to the game.
