Valentine's Day Outfits: What to Wear for Dinner, Drinks, Brunch or a Night In

Valentine's Day 2027 falls on Sunday, February 14, which is also Super Bowl Sunday, so many couples will celebrate over a Saturday dinner, a Sunday brunch or a night in. The best Valentine's Day outfits start with the setting. For dinner at a restaurant, wear a dress or dressy separates in a fabric that sits well through three courses (a fine knit, wool crepe or lined satin) in red, burgundy, pink or black, and put your effort above the table: neckline, sleeves and earrings. For a cocktail bar, pair one textured piece, such as lace, satin or leather, with something plain. For a daytime date, dress up your knitwear. At home, wear cashmere and silk.
Below, we cover the calendar, what to wear for each kind of date, the colors beyond red, the fabrics that make sense in February, and the shoes to wear with all of it.
Valentine's Day 2027: which night, and what to wear
The holiday shares its date with Super Bowl LXI, which the NFL's 2026-27 calendar places at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, on Sunday, February 14; CBS Sports points out that it is the first Super Bowl ever played on Valentine's Day. The next day, Monday, February 15, is Washington's Birthday on the federal holiday calendar, the holiday most people call Presidents' Day, so many couples have a three-day weekend and a choice of dates. Each one asks for different clothes:
- Saturday, February 13: dinner out. The dressiest night of the weekend, and the one for a tasting menu or a hotel dining room. Book early.
- Sunday, February 14: brunch or a gallery. Fine knitwear, a midi skirt or dark jeans, and shoes you can walk in.
- Sunday night: a night in. Cashmere and silk, with or without the game.
If one of you would rather watch the game, our guide to what to wear to the Super Bowl covers the party, and our Valentine's gift guides for her and for him cover the present.
Valentine's Day outfits for dinner at a restaurant
For a good restaurant, the Emily Post Institute's attire guide points to dressy casual, which it describes as the ideal choice for dinner at a nice restaurant: a dress, a skirt and dressy top, a dressy pants outfit, or nice jeans with a dressy top. For a tasting menu, a hotel dining room or anywhere with a dress code, move up to cocktail: a knee-to-midi dress in an evening fabric.
Then think about the table. For most of the evening, your date sees you from the ribs up, across a tablecloth, by candlelight, so put the interest there: a neckline that frames the face, a sleeve with some shape, earrings that move. Keep the lower half comfortable enough to sit in for two hours. Fabrics that sit well matter more than you would expect: wool crepe, fine knits and lined satin come out of a banquette looking the way they went in, while stiff taffeta crushes and heavy sequins scratch at the arms and the back of the chair.
A romantic dinner outfit, four ways
- Red knit, gold hoops. A long-sleeved red knit midi with a blouson or ribbed bodice, gold hoops and suede pumps. It is warm enough for February, so the coat can stay at the door.
- A fitted red dress with a floral neckline. Thin straps and a sculpted bodice, with a cashmere cardigan over your shoulders for the walk in. Magda Butrym's floral appliqués are made for this.
- Ladylike crepe. A red crepe midi with short sleeves and a bow detail, pearl studs and black pumps. It is the most classic of the four, and works as well for a first date as a tenth anniversary.
- Black, with one red thing. A black dress or tailored trousers and a silk blouse, with red shoes or a red lip. It is the answer for anyone who does not wear red.
What to leave at home: anything you have to hold up, pull down or adjust at the table; shoes you have never walked in; a skirt so full it takes up the aisle of a small restaurant; and white or pale silk if red wine is on the menu. Carolina Herrera's crepe dresses cover the classic end, and Stella McCartney's draped satin the more daring one. To take a slip dress into February, see how to wear a slip dress in winter.

Earrings do the talking
Across a table, earrings are the jewelry your date sees most, so this is where to spend. A drop that moves when you laugh, a pavé hoop that catches the candle, a hoop in red enamel, or a sculptural heart if you want to nod to the day without spelling it out. Match the scale to the neckline: with a high neck or bare shoulders, go big; with a busy neckline or a collar, keep to small hoops. Skip the necklace if the earrings are doing the work. Date night outfits for a cocktail bar
A cocktail bar changes three things: you stand more, you perch on a stool, and the light is low. Low light flatters texture and shine, so this is the place for lace, satin, velvet and leather, one at a time. A short hem rides up on a bar stool, so a midi skirt, a slip with a slit or tailored trousers make the evening easier than a mini. Layer for the walk between the car and the bar: a blazer or a short coat over a camisole comes off inside and still looks finished.
- Lace and leather. A lace-trimmed silk camisole, a black leather midi skirt and a tailored blazer over the shoulders.
- Satin on satin. A dark red silk satin skirt with a fine black cashmere sweater tucked in, and velvet mules.
- Velvet camisole, sharp trousers. A black velvet camisole with lace trim and wide tailored trousers: the least effort for the most effect.
- Fuchsia for the brave. A fuchsia silk skirt with a black knit and black pumps, which reads as pink and red at once.
Valentino's lace-trimmed silks and Prada's velvet are where we would start. Browse more camisoles.

What to wear on Valentine's Day for a daytime date
With Valentine's on a Sunday, brunch, a gallery or a long walk may be the whole plan, and daytime rewards knitwear and texture rather than shine. The formula is one soft piece and one sharp one: a pink or red cashmere sweater with dark jeans and loafers, a fine knit with a pleated or satin midi skirt and knee boots, a cardigan buttoned as a top under a camel coat. Dressy casual still applies, so keep the jeans dark and the knit fine. Bring a coat you are happy to keep on in a gallery, and shoes you can walk in: a low block heel, a loafer or a flat boot.
What to wear for Valentine's Day at home
A night in is the most intimate version of the date, and it deserves more than sweatpants. The aim is to look as if you made an effort, in things that feel good to the touch: a cashmere cardigan buttoned up as a top, wide silk trousers that move, cashmere pants that feel like loungewear and look like tailoring. Keep one piece of jewelry, go barefoot or wear velvet slippers, and if you are cooking, roll the sleeves. The Row's cashmere and silk trousers and Oscar de la Renta's fine cashmere cardigans show how quiet this can be.
- Pale pink and black. A fitted pink cashmere cardigan, buttoned, with black silk wide-leg trousers.
- Red and chocolate. A red wool-cashmere cardigan with brown cashmere pants: warm, and more interesting than head-to-toe red.
- Silk pajamas, taken seriously. Silk pajama trousers with a fine knit, not the matching shirt, so it reads as an outfit rather than bedtime.

Valentine's Day colors beyond red
Red is the default, and there is a red for everyone if you choose its undertone. Blue-based reds (crimson, raspberry, wine) look sharp with silver and white gold; orange-based reds (tomato, poppy, vermilion) warm up with yellow gold. A useful rule of thumb: if gold jewelry flatters you, choose the warmer red. If red is not you, the other colors of the day are just as romantic:
- Burgundy and oxblood. The grown-up red, and the easiest to wear in winter fabrics. See how to wear burgundy.
- Pink, from blush to fuchsia. Pale pink cashmere is soft and quiet; fuchsia satin is the opposite. Pink and red together looks modern, especially when one of them is a shoe or a bag.
- Chocolate brown. Rich, warm and unexpected on Valentine's Day, and beautiful with pink.
- Black. Always correct at dinner; add one red element, from a shoe to a lip, so it looks like the occasion.

Fabrics and shoes for a February date
Mid-February is coat weather across most of the country, so dress with the coat in mind. Choose a coat long enough to cover your hem, and fabrics that stay warm without bulk: wool crepe, fine cashmere, velvet and heavy satin. Wear sheer tights with a midi dress, and put a cashmere layer over any slip dress. Save linen and cotton poplin for spring. If you are walking more than a block, wear boots and carry your evening shoes, or choose a heel you can walk in.
Red shoes make the most of the date with the least commitment. Suede pumps in red are the easiest to wear with black or with denim; a buckled velvet pump is the dressier version, and velvet mules with a sculptural heel look right at a bar or a dinner table. Watch the material in bad weather: suede and velvet mark in rain and snow, so keep them for door-to-door evenings. Christian Louboutin and Manolo Blahnik both make classic red suede pumps; browse more pumps.

Dinner and date night rank third among the occasions people bring to Vêtir's AI stylist, after everyday outfits and parties. Ask our AI stylist with the restaurant, the time and the forecast, and it will build the full look, starting from a piece already in your Vêtir closet if you like.
How we chose
Across every plan here, from a restaurant dinner to a night in, we kept to top luxury houses sold on Vêtir, took nothing discounted or out of stock at our late-September check, and leaned toward pieces offered in several sizes. With so much red and pink in play, we judged each piece by its photographs, since retailer color names are not always accurate. We favored fabrics that sit well through a long dinner (wool, wool crepe, fine knits, lined satin, cashmere and silk), shoes you can walk a block in, and earrings scaled to be seen across a table. Should a piece sell out before Valentine's Day, the edit swaps in another that meets the same brief.
Frequently asked questions
What should I wear on Valentine's Day?
Dress for where you are going. For a restaurant dinner, a dress or dressy separates in a fabric that sits well, in red, burgundy, pink or black; for a cocktail bar, one textured piece such as lace, satin or leather; for brunch, fine knitwear with jeans or a skirt; at home, cashmere and silk.
What should I wear on a Valentine's Day dinner date?
For a nice restaurant, the Emily Post Institute's guidance is dressy casual: a dress, a skirt and dressy top, or a dressy pants outfit. Put the detail above the table, in the neckline, sleeves and earrings, and choose a fabric such as wool crepe or a fine knit that will not crease or scratch through dinner.
What colors should I wear on Valentine's Day besides red?
Burgundy, pink from blush to fuchsia, chocolate brown and black all work. Pink and red together looks modern, and black with a single red accent, such as shoes or a lip, is the easy route for anyone who does not wear red.
Is it OK to wear black on Valentine's Day?
Yes. Black is always right for dinner. Add one red or pink element, a shoe, a bag or a lip, so the outfit feels like the occasion.
What should I wear for Valentine's Day at home?
Something soft that still looks intentional: a cashmere cardigan buttoned as a top with wide silk or cashmere trousers, or silk pajama trousers with a fine knit. Keep one piece of jewelry and go barefoot or wear velvet slippers.
What should I wear on Valentine's Day when it is cold?
Choose warm fabrics that are not bulky, such as wool crepe, cashmere, velvet and heavy satin, and a coat long enough to cover your hem. Add sheer tights under a midi dress, a knit over a slip dress, and wear boots for any walking.
