What to Wear in Cabo: From Cool Nights, Resort Dress Codes, Whale Season and to the Famous Art Walk.

What to Wear in Cabo: From Cool Nights, Resort Dress Codes, Whale Season and to the Famous Art Walk.

What to wear in Cabo between Thanksgiving and spring comes down to one number: about 25 degrees. That is the average gap between a January afternoon and a January night in Cabo San Lucas, by the climate normals of Mexico's national weather service, and San José del Cabo cools even further after dark. So pack for the desert rather than the tropics. Bring swimsuits and long silk sleeves for strong sun and nearly rainless days, a fine knit for every dinner, a hooded shell for the whale-watching boats, closed flats for the cobbled Art Walk and the few rooms that turn away sandals, and one floor-length dress if New Year's Eve is black tie.

Below: the weather month by month, what the big resorts actually publish as dress codes (and where we found none), the whale and Art Walk seasons, a day in Todos Santos, a men's edit and a seven-night packing list, with seventy pieces from Pucci, Loewe, Elie Saab, Manolo Blahnik, Moncler and 34 other houses.

What to wear in Cabo in winter: the weather by month

The SMN, Mexico's national weather service, keeps a station in each town. Its 1991–2020 climate normals for Cabo San Lucas (station 3005), read beside those for San José del Cabo (station 3056), describe a season of warm days, cool nights and almost no rain. Converted from Celsius and rounded:

MonthCabo San Lucas high / lowSan José del Cabo high / lowRain days (Cabo San Lucas)What it changes
November87°F / 64°F89°F / 62°Fabout 1The last weeks of the storm season: one outfit that can get soaked
December81°F / 57°F83°F / 56°Funder 1A knit for every dinner outdoors
January80°F / 55°F82°F / 53°Fabout 1The coolest nights: cashmere, and a shell on the water
February81°F / 55°F83°F / 53°Funder 1San José's day-to-night swing reaches about 30 degrees
March83°F / 57°F85°F / 55°Falmost noneWarmer days, the same 30-degree swing in San José: still a sleeve after sunset
April86°F / 60°F87°F / 58°Fnone on averageSpring-break heat and the end of whale season

Two things in those figures shape the suitcase. The nights first: a dress that is right at a 2 p.m. pool lunch is underdressed late on a terrace, as the air falls toward an overnight low in the mid-50s, and Grand Velas Los Cabos's own guest FAQ calls December evenings "cool and breezy" and tells guests to pack a jacket or sweater. Then the dry: about three-quarters of Cabo San Lucas's annual rain falls in August and September, so from December to April an umbrella rarely earns its space. November is the month to plan for. The National Hurricane Center's eastern Pacific season runs to November 30, so a Thanksgiving trip falls in its final week, and San José del Cabo's November rain average is skewed by a few storm years (about 25 inches fell there in November 1993). Pack one outfit that can get soaked, and no suede for the beach.

Make the layer finer than you expect. Our stylists' rule for Cabo is a knit thin enough to sit over silk: a cashmere-silk or silk cardigan, cropped if the dress has a defined waist, or a light linen jacket for a dinner that starts in daylight.

  • Champagne over burgundy: Isabel Marant's Amaria, a cashmere-and-silk knit embroidered with sequins and seed beads, per its listing, over Rabanne's burgundy floral silk slip dress, which hangs from chain straps.
  • Ivory and ultramarine: Fendi's cropped V-neck in cashmere, silk and alpaca over Carolina Herrera's one-shoulder silk midi.
  • For the sunset sail: Thom Browne's ivory cotton cardigan, with a sailboat jacquard across the back, over a swimsuit and wide white trousers.

More knits are in our edit of designer cardigans.

Cabo San Lucas outfits for beach clubs and pool days

A beach-club or pool day here runs from late morning to late afternoon in bright sun, which is why we pack one-pieces before bikinis for a winter week: every inch a swimsuit covers is an inch you do not have to keep recoating.

A one-shoulder or a halter stays put on a lounger and reads as a top at lunch once a sarong goes on; a plain maillot is the one to swim in. Pucci's Orchidee one-shoulder, printed in pink and orange, and Versace's navy-and-black striped one-shoulder, with Medusa hardware at the strap, are the lunch-table suits, and Missoni's zigzag one-shoulder brings the most color. Zimmermann's black Fairlight halterneck has gold-tone beads at the neck and adjustable ties, per its listing, and Jacquemus's pale-yellow Le Maillot, square at the neck on thin straps, is the swimming suit.

  • Pink, orange and rust: Pucci's Orchidee one-shoulder under Kiton's silk caftan, a short A-line with wide sleeves that shades from burgundy at the shoulders to rust at the hem.
  • Black, red and white: Zimmermann's black halterneck under Loewe's red, white and navy printed silk shirt, worn open.
  • Ivory on ivory: Tom Ford's ivory polka-dot suit, framed by fine chain straps, under Burberry's ivory Dorothea silk shirt.

Sizing differs by house: Versace sizes its swimsuits by number, Chloé in French sizes, and Jacquemus and Tom Ford in letters. Try a one-shoulder at home with both arms raised; if the strap slides, it will slide on the lounger too.

Sun protection in Cabo: what dermatologists advise, and what to wear

Winter does not soften the sun at the tip of Baja. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher on all skin not covered by clothing, reapplied about every two hours or after swimming or sweating. It asks for extra caution near water and sand, which reflect the sun, and for sun-protective clothing: a lightweight long-sleeved shirt, pants, a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses with UV protection.

The Skin Cancer Foundation's guide to sun-protective clothing explains what makes a cover-up work. A fabric rated UPF 50 blocks 98 percent of the sun's rays, while an ordinary white T-shirt rates only about UPF 7, and about 3 once it is wet. Dark or bright colors protect better than pale ones, densely woven cloth beats sheer or loose weaves, and even lightweight, satiny silks can be highly protective because they reflect radiation. Anything stretched or wet loses some of that protection.

That is close to a brief for printed silk, which packs into a fist. Pucci's fuchsia Iride shirt and Loewe's red block-print shirt are the brightest here; Pucci's pink crêpe de chine caftan, with waterfall sleeves and a tie at the collar, covers you to the ankle at lunch; Isabel Marant's Freya is a rosewood silk tunic with embroidered trim. Etro's ivory nautical-print tunic and Burberry's ivory Dorothea are the paler compromise, less protective by the Foundation's measure. Swap a soaked cover-up for a dry one before you go back into the sun.

The hat has two jobs here: shade, and staying on. The Foundation's test is a brim of at least three inches and a tightly woven hat rather than a loosely constructed straw. Few listings give a brim width, so measure one before you buy. Loewe's cotton-canvas bucket hat, from its collaboration with Paula's Ibiza, has webbing straps that tie, per its listing; Valentino's cotton hat comes in black, a color the Foundation rates above pale shades; Brunello Cucinelli's bucket hat is a close weave of cotton and linen. All five pairs of sunglasses here list 100 percent UV protection, and oversized and wrap shapes cover more of the skin around the eyes. Browse all designer sunglasses or designer hats.

Boat days and whale-watching season in Los Cabos

The Los Cabos Tourism Board gives December through April as the best time for whale watching, when charters run catamarans and yachts out to see gray and humpback whales, many with their young. Mexico's federal conservation action program for the humpback, published by SEMARNAT and CONANP in 2018, documents the species around Los Cabos from at least November to April, most abundantly in March. A Thanksgiving trip may catch the first humpbacks; if whales are the reason for the trip, the federal record favors March.

Dress for wind, spray and an early start. Four Seasons Resort Los Cabos at Costa Palmas warns winter guests that the north winds "can create cool evenings on the water," and to pack a light layer for boat trips. Our rules:

  • A hood beats a scarf. A light hooded shell blocks wind on the ears and neck, then folds into a beach bag.
  • Flat, rubber-soled shoes. Wet decks and ladders are no place for leather soles or heels, and some yachts ask guests to go barefoot, so choose a pair you can kick off.
  • Trousers, not a long skirt. A maxi catches on ladders and in the wind; wide linen trousers over a swimsuit do not.
  • A strap on the hat. An untied brim ends up in the sea.

Moncler's ivory windbreaker is water-repellent nylon, per its listing; ALAÏA's navy one, in polyester and silk with an elasticated waist, is the dressier cut; Burberry's beige Nelson has a two-way zip; Loewe's black shell lines its hood in leather; and Brunello Cucinelli's heather-gray cotton fleece track jacket is the soft option for a dawn start. Our whale-watching outfit: Tom Ford's ivory one-piece, wide white trousers, Moncler's windbreaker, Loewe's canvas bucket hat with its straps tied and Bottega Veneta's wrap sunglasses. For a longer charter, see what to wear on a yacht.

The Los Cabos dress code: what the resorts publish

There is no single Los Cabos dress code. In late October 2026 we read each resort's own dining pages; this is what we found:

ResortRestaurant or barWhat the resort publishes
Las Ventanas al ParaísoLa Botica (piano bar)"No bathing suits, shorts or sandals."
Las Ventanas al ParaísoLa Cava"Evening resort attire," with the wine cellar kept at about 61°F
Las Ventanas al ParaísoArbol / Alebrije / Sea Grill"Chic, your way." / "Smart casual" / "Casual"
One&Only PalmillaAgua / SearedAgua: casual resort attire at lunch, "elegant resort attire" at dinner. Seared: "Resort Casual"
Four Seasons Resort Los Cabos at Costa PalmasCasa de Brasa, Estiatorio Milos, El Puesto, Limon, Zest"Refined resort attire is recommended for dinner. Swimwear, bathrobes, athletic attire and bare feet are not permitted."
Grand Velas Los CabosLucca, Sen Lin, Frida, Cocina de AutorCasual-elegant: a dress, skirt or dress pants for women; a collared shirt, dress pants and closed-toe shoes for men
Zadún, a Ritz-Carlton ReserveHUMO / El Barrio"Smart Casual" / "Casual"
Montage Los CabosAll restaurantsWe found none published on its site
Chileno Bay and Esperanza (Auberge)All restaurantsWe found none published on either site; each restaurant page describes a mood instead, from "beachy casual" to Cocina del Mar's "romantic and celebratory"

Three things follow. Codes apply at dinner; lunch is relaxed almost everywhere. "Elegant" or "refined" resort attire means a midi or maxi dress, or tailored trousers and a silk top, not a sundress over a swimsuit. And shoes are the usual trip wire: La Botica rules out sandals, and the Four Seasons at Costa Palmas rules out bare feet. Where we found nothing, ask the concierge when you book, and confirm any code before you pack: One&Only's page for Seared asked for elegant resort attire in April and now says "Resort Casual".

For the dresses, think long, fluid and sleeved. Gabriela Hearst's Imara is black silk jersey with long open sleeves; Proenza Schouler's Lina, in burgundy crinkled silk, bares the shoulders and back but covers the arms; Zimmermann's Echo Billow, printed on a powder-blue ground, is silk with balloon sleeves and a mandarin collar. Stella McCartney's midnight-blue scarf-neck midi is acetate and viscose satin rather than silk, per its listing, and Dolce & Gabbana's Carretto print is stretch-silk charmeuse with three-quarter sleeves.

  • Black and ivory: Gabriela Hearst's Imara, Roger Vivier's black rose-trimmed ballerinas and Fendi's ivory cropped cardigan for the walk back.
  • Powder blue and silver: Zimmermann's Echo Billow with Loewe's silver Pebble ballerinas.
  • Burgundy and red-trimmed raffia: Proenza Schouler's Lina with Manolo Blahnik's raffia Verallim flats, piped and bowed in red.

San José del Cabo Art Walk: what to wear on the cobblestones

The historic district of San José del Cabo has held an Art Walk on Thursday evenings from November to June, a tour of galleries, boutiques and open-air exhibitions along cobbled streets, according to the Los Cabos Tourism Board. We found no published dates for the 2026–27 season, so confirm it with your hotel before you plan a Thursday around it. The board's own advice is to arrive early and to wear comfortable shoes, because the walk spans the whole district.

It is a shoe question first. Stilettos catch between cobbles and, in our experience, smooth new leather soles slip on worn stone, so wear a closed flat or a Mary Jane whose strap keeps the foot in place. Thom Browne's black leather pair buckles at the instep and Gianvito Rossi's black patent pair has a gold buckle; Proenza Schouler's orange crochet flats and Manolo Blahnik's red-trimmed raffia Verallim are the lightest for a warm night. All of them pass La Botica's no-sandals rule too. Carry a small crossbody (see our best crossbody bags) and the cardigan: San José's average January low is 53°F.

  • Ivory and khaki: Isabel Marant's ivory Falja, a printed stretch-silk dress with a wrap-effect neckline, under Max Mara's khaki linen-and-silk jacket, with Thom Browne's black Mary Janes.
  • Print and black: Dolce & Gabbana's Carretto midi with Miu Miu's black leather slingback ballerinas.

A day in Todos Santos

Todos Santos sits on the Pacific coast in the foothills of the Sierra de la Laguna, a scenic hour's drive from Los Cabos; the Mexican government named it a Pueblo Mágico in 2006, according to the Los Cabos Tourism Board, and its streets are cobbled. It is cooler, too: the SMN normals for the Todos Santos station put average January highs near 77°F and lows near 52°F.

For the drive, the town and the sunset, wear linen trousers or a cotton day dress, the flats you would wear to the Art Walk, a hat with a strap and a cashmere sweater in the car, such as The Row's sand Torin or Gabriela Hearst's navy Linna, both pure cashmere, per their listings. Leave the silk at the hotel; dust and wind are hard on it.

Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Eve in Cabo

Thanksgiving falls on Thursday, November 26, 2026, the warmest holiday of the season, when a cotton or linen dress and a light cardigan are enough. Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve come as the nights cool, with December nights in Cabo San Lucas falling to about 57°F on average. Among the party requests typed into our AI stylist over the past twelve months, across all users, is "Outfit for a black-tie party in Cabo."

Black tie somewhere warm still means floor length, in fabrics that breathe: crêpe, cady, jersey or chiffon rather than velvet, in a jewel tone or a clear color. Elie Saab's emerald halterneck is silk, viscose and acetate crêpe; Oscar de la Renta's orange column is stretch cady over inner corsetry, with cap sleeves; Proenza Schouler's yellow Sirena is ruched viscose and linen; Alexander McQueen's lilac bustier gown is flat chiffon. Carolina Herrera's ultramarine A-line is polyester and polyurethane, per its listing. Bring a wrap or the cardigan for after midnight, and a block heel or dressy flat for a terrace or the sand, where a stiletto sinks. More ideas are in our New Year's Eve outfits.

What men wear to dinner in Cabo

The strictest published rule we found is Grand Velas Los Cabos's casual-elegant code: a collared shirt, dress pants and closed-toe shoes. Pack for that and, in our reading, you meet every other code in our table, including La Botica's, which rules out shorts and sandals. In practice: linen trousers after dark, a linen shirt or a knit polo (a polo has a collar), a light jacket for cool nights and suede loafers.

  • Ivory and gray: Canali's ivory jacquard-knit polo, Brunello Cucinelli's gray pleated linen trousers and The Row's black suede Marc loafers.
  • Navy and slate: Prada's navy open-knit polo in cotton and linen with the same trousers and Ferragamo's slate-gray suede Tancredi, a boat-shoe loafer on a rubber sole.
  • For a jacket night: Canali's light-blue herringbone blazer in linen and wool over Thom Browne's white linen shirt or Kiton's blue linen shirt, with the gray trousers and the Tancredi.

One fitting note: Brunello Cucinelli's pleated linen trousers come with unfinished hems, per the listing, so have them hemmed before you fly. For more, see our guide to beach vacation outfits for winter sun, which includes the flight down.

What to pack for Cabo: a seven-night list

This list covers the Cabo vacation outfits above and assumes three pool or beach days, one whale-watching or boat morning, an Art Walk Thursday, a day in Todos Santos and four dinners, one of them dressy.

  • Swimwear (3): two one-pieces that work at a lunch table and one for swimming.
  • Sun cover (3): a long-sleeved silk shirt in a bright print, a caftan and a sarong.
  • Day (3): wide linen trousers, a cotton day dress, a fine tank or T-shirt.
  • Dinner (3): two long dresses with sleeves, or one with sleeves and one with a cardigan, plus a gown or dressier piece for the holiday night.
  • Layers (3): a cashmere-silk cardigan, a cashmere sweater and a hooded shell.
  • Shoes (4): rubber-soled flats for the boat, closed flats for cobbles and dinners, flat sandals for the pool and one dressy pair.
  • Accessories: a wide-brimmed hat with a strap, UV-rated sunglasses, a crossbody and a beach tote.

Leave at home: an umbrella, suede for the beach and stilettos. For the humid kind of trip, see our guides to what to wear in Tulum and resort wear. If half of this is already in your closet, our AI stylist can plan the week around what you own and point out only the gaps.

The mistakes we see in Cabo

Most come from treating a desert coast like the Caribbean:

  • Packing for the tropics. All linen and no knit leaves you cold at dinner from December to March.
  • Trusting a white T-shirt as sun cover. By the Skin Cancer Foundation's figure it rates about UPF 7, and about 3 when wet.
  • An open-weave straw hat on a boat. It lets sun through, and without a strap it leaves with the first gust.
  • A loose hat. Hats are sized by head circumference, in centimeters or in US hat sizes such as 7 1/8, so measure just above the ears before you order.

Each evening, rinse swimwear in fresh water and dry it in the shade, hang silk so salt and creases drop out, and let raffia flats dry fully before they go back in a closed suitcase.

Worth buying once: a fine cashmere-silk cardigan in ivory or champagne, which goes over every dinner dress and home to a city winter; a hooded shell that packs small; closed leather flats you can walk a mile in. Fine for one season: a printed one-piece, a bright silk caftan and a gown in a color you would not wear at home.

How we chose

  • The 25-degree swing: every dinner look has a sleeve or a knit beside it, and the layers are fine enough to wear over silk.
  • Sun first: one-pieces over bikinis, long silk sleeves in strong colors, close-woven hats, one with ties, and sunglasses whose listings state 100 percent UV protection.
  • The published rules: dinner shoes are closed, so they pass La Botica, and the men's edit meets Grand Velas's collared-shirt code.
  • Wind on the water: boat layers have hoods and close at the hem or waist.
  • Honest fabrics: where a dress or gown is acetate, viscose or polyester, we say so.
  • Own feeds: Moncler and Chloé come from the houses' own stores. Prices run from under $500 for a swimsuit or sunglasses to about $6,500 for a gown.

Frequently asked questions

What should I wear in Cabo in December?

Swimwear and light cover-ups for days around 81°F, and a dress with sleeves or a fine knit for nights that fall to about 57°F, by the SMN averages for Cabo San Lucas. Add a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses and closed flats for dinner.

Is there a dress code at Cabo resorts?

At some restaurants, mostly at dinner. Las Ventanas' La Botica allows no bathing suits, shorts or sandals; One&Only Palmilla's Agua asks for elegant resort attire at dinner; the Four Seasons at Costa Palmas recommends refined resort attire and bans swimwear and bare feet. We found no code published on the Montage, Chileno Bay or Esperanza sites, so ask the concierge.

Do I need a jacket in Cabo in winter?

Yes. From December to February the average overnight low is in the mid-50s, cooler in San José del Cabo and on the water. Pack a cashmere-silk cardigan for dinner and a hooded shell for boats.

When is whale-watching season in Cabo?

December through April for gray and humpback whales, according to the Los Cabos Tourism Board; Mexico's federal humpback program documents humpbacks there from at least November to April, most of them in March. Wear a hooded windbreaker, trousers, flat rubber-soled shoes and a hat with a strap.

What do you wear to the San José del Cabo Art Walk?

Comfortable closed flats for the cobblestones, a dress or trousers that work for a gallery and dinner, a crossbody bag and a light layer. It has run on Thursday evenings from November to June; confirm this season's dates with your hotel.

What should men wear to dinner in Cabo?

Linen trousers, a collared linen shirt or knit polo and suede loafers. That meets Grand Velas's casual-elegant code and La Botica's no-shorts, no-sandals rule; add a light linen-wool blazer on cooler nights.
