The Best Luxury Slippers for Women and Men, From Shearling Mules to Velvet Evening Pairs

The best luxury slippers are chosen sole first and lining second. For cold floors and slow mornings, buy shearling, or suede lined in it, on a rubber sole. For guests and a dinner you host, buy velvet on a thin leather sole. If the pair has to manage a staircase, a parent's house or the walk to the mailbox, look for a rubber sole and a closed heel on the listing before you look at the logo. Men's pairs follow the same rules, and the two most worth owning are a velvet evening slipper and a loafer whose heel folds flat.
Below: six shapes, nine edits with 61 pairs from 27 houses (six for women, three for men), which soles can go outside, how to size shearling, care, and who on your list gets which pair.
Luxury slippers, explained: six shapes and what each one is for
Slippers have left the bedroom. Vogue's report on the fall 2026 shoe trends counted the slipper among the season's shoes, from Gucci's fur-lined horsebit style to embroidered takes at Ralph Lauren and Conner Ives; at Conner Ives and Calvin Klein it was the flat under statement skirts and sequined dresses. Once a slipper is worn with sequins, it has to look finished from every angle.
| Shape | How it is built | Sole you will usually find | Wear it for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shearling slipper or mule | Sheepskin with the wool left on, or suede lined in it | Rubber, often lugged | Tile, stone and the first hour of the day |
| Loafer-slipper | A loafer with the back cut away, or a heel counter that folds flat | Leather or thin rubber | Errands, travel, the week between Christmas and New Year's |
| Velvet evening slipper | Velvet upper, leather sole, a low stacked heel | Leather | Hosting, dinner, a party you can drive to |
| Suede moccasin | Soft leather wrapped under the foot, a top panel stitched on | Rubber or thin leather | The school run, the farmers' market, a long flight |
| Soft house slipper | An unstructured upper in leather, canvas, cashmere or cotton | Leather or rubber | Reading, the bedroom, the suitcase |
| Shearling ballerina | A ballet flat cut in shearling, or suede lined in it | Rubber or leather | A shoes-off party, a chalet, guests at your own table |
A plain velvet slipper and a shearling-lined suede pair are the two we would buy once and wear for a decade. Faux-fur platforms, crystal bows and logo jacquards are this December's pleasure, and that is allowed.
Shearling slippers: the warmest pair, and how to tell a good one
A good shearling pair stays warm without turning clammy, because wool takes up moisture vapor before it feels wet. The Woolmark Company, the wool industry's own marketing body, puts that at up to 35 percent of the fiber's weight in its fact sheet on breathability. In our experience, that is the difference between a shearling footbed and synthetic fleece by the end of a long Sunday.
Read the listing for three words. "Shearling" usually means the slipper itself is the skin, as on Prada's shearling slippers, which Moda Operandi describes as soft shearling hot-stamped with a gold logo. "Shearling-lined" means a suede or leather outer with the wool inside: Roger Vivier's Slidy Viv' mules and Tod's Gommino platform mules are built that way, the Tod's on the house's pebbled rubber sole. "Faux" means what it says: Balenciaga's Furry Platform slippers are faux mink topped with a crystal bow, according to the listing. Isabel Marant's Malvin slide is a fourth case: suede lined with real dyed sheep fur from Iceland, footbed included, per FWRD.
Then check the footbed. We find the warmth comes from wool under the sole of the foot, not from the fluffy collar, so look for "shearling insole" or "fur footbed" in the composition line. Brunello Cucinelli's Monili slip-ons are shearling outside, fully lined, on chunky rubber soles, according to NET-A-PORTER.
- Gray shearling slip-ons, oatmeal cashmere joggers and an ivory cable knit.
- Camel suede mules with cream wide-leg knit trousers and a chocolate cardigan.
- Prada's criss-cross suede mules, shearling-lined on a rubber sole, with ecru jeans and a gray sweatshirt for the coffee run.

Loafer-slippers and backless mules: the pair you can answer the door in
A loafer-slipper looks dressed from the front and lets the heel go. Gucci's Horsebit mule is the reference shape, and the pair here is its louder version, in beige and ebony GG Supreme canvas on a rubber sole, according to Gucci. Miu Miu's version is a penny loafer with the back removed, on a white rubber lug sole, and it is the only pair in this group lined in shearling. Roger Vivier's Viv Rangers is the dressier backless pair: black leather cut like a loafer, with the house's buckle on a 15mm heel, according to NET-A-PORTER.
The most useful variant has a heel counter that folds down. Saint Laurent's Le Loafer in hagfish leather can be worn with the back up or folded, according to the house's own listing, so one pair is a street loafer on Saturday and a slipper on Sunday. Our stylists' rule: fold it only on the days you stay in, because a counter left folded for weeks stops standing up.
Brunello Cucinelli turns the boat shoe into a backless mule, with Monili beads along the sides and a rubber sole that NET-A-PORTER says is there for grip. Isabel Marant's Malvin mule is softer, a moc-stitched suede with tassel ties, made in Portugal according to Neiman Marcus. Loewe's Toy is the quietest: a slipper loafer in ivory leather with almost nothing on it.
- Gucci's GG canvas mules with cream wide-leg trousers and a gray cashmere crewneck.
- Loewe's ivory Toy with ecru straight jeans and a camel-hair coat.
- Miu Miu's shearling penny mules with gray flannel trousers and a cream turtleneck for a Saturday of errands.

Velvet slippers: the Albert, worn out of the house
Menswear writers call the velvet slipper on a leather sole the Albert, a name that tradition traces to Prince Albert; we found no record that settles it. Its place in evening dress is narrow: Gentleman's Gazette's guide to evening footwear files Albert slippers with the dinner jacket at home, the shoe for the host of a less formal black-tie evening.
Its Venetian cousin is softer. Friulane began in the Friulian countryside in the 1800s as cheap shoes women sewed by hand from scraps, later soled with old bicycle tires; once they reached Venice, gondoliers took them up because they gripped well and did not scratch the boats' varnish, according to the Italian news site Il Post. A friulana flexes on a rubber sole; an Albert is structured and leather-soled. TOTEME's Venetian slipper is in our luxury pajamas guide; the pairs below are the evening kind.
Wearing velvet slippers out works within two limits: dry pavement and a short walk. The Row's Marc, velvet with leather trim on a leather sole according to Mytheresa, is the plainest way to do it. Jil Sander's Elbe, from the Fall '26 runway, is stretch satin scattered with black crystals on a Vibram rubber sole, per NET-A-PORTER: the rare evening slipper that will not skate on a wet sidewalk. Zimmermann's Atelier mule is black velvet on a 35mm wedge, with a leather sole and a rubber heel cap, per Shopbop: a little height for the woman who hosts in it. ALAÏA's satin slip-on, in a deep petrol teal on a low block heel, looks like an evening shoe and walks like a slipper. Valentino Garavani's ballerinas are metallic floral brocade with a gold-tone VLogo buckle.
- Espresso velvet slippers, cream wide-leg wool trousers and an ivory silk shirt for Thanksgiving dinner.
- Black satin slip-ons, a black column skirt and a burgundy cashmere wrap for a holiday concert.
- Pink brocade ballerinas with gray flannel trousers and a white poplin shirt for Christmas lunch.

Men's velvet slippers for hosting
For men, velvet slippers belong to the evenings he hosts; our guide to tuxedos covers where they sit against patent oxfords. Tom Ford's Nicolas is the classic shape with a leather tassel and a stacked heel of about three-quarters of an inch, according to FWRD. The house's Leo, an apron-toe slipper listed as royal blue, photographs as a midnight velvet that reads almost black. Its apron-toe penny loafer in espresso velvet has a tan leather lining and edge piping, per Neiman Marcus. Gucci's Ragazzo is velvet with grosgrain trim and a quilted insole, built inside out for a soft fit, according to Gucci.
Dolce & Gabbana covers the rest of the range: a plain leather slipper loafer, the Ariosto in leopard-print pony for a man who already owns a velvet jacket, and a backless black suede slipper embroidered with a tonal crest, on a leather sole according to Mytheresa: the Albert, made as a mule.
- Midnight velvet slippers, gray flannel trousers, a white shirt open at the neck and a burgundy cardigan.
- Black leather slipper loafers with a black dinner jacket and black trousers at your own party.

Suede moccasins: the slipper that goes outside
A true moccasin, soft leather wrapped up from under the foot, is the closest a street shoe gets to a slipper. For winter, choose one with a rubber sole. The Row's Lucca has one, according to Mytheresa, and so do Proenza Schouler's whipstitched suede loafers, per Bergdorf Goodman. For cold floors, three pairs are suede lined in shearling, each with a shearling insole and a rubber sole according to Mytheresa: Christian Louboutin's Chambeliboat, Isabel Marant's studded Fitza and Tod's Gommino boat shoe.
Miu Miu's fringed moccasins lace all the way around the collar, according to Bergdorf Goodman, so they pull snug on a narrow foot; the house's plainer pair is a suede driver. Keep moccasins for dry days: thin soles are made for floors and pavement, not slush.
- Tan shearling-lined moccasins, ecru jeans, a cream fisherman sweater and a camel-hair coat.
- Black Lucca moccasins with black straight jeans and a gray cashmere hoodie on a flight.

House slippers for women in leather, canvas, cashmere and cotton
The quiet pairs are the ones you wear most. The Row's Casa comes in leather and in canvas, gathered softly at the heel, and the house's Stellene is brown suede with an elongated almond toe, according to Moda Operandi. Proenza Schouler's Glove slippers are pieced suede and leather on a rubber sole, per Saks, and Loro Piana's Alba is leather in a beige with green undertones, square-toed on a slight heel.
Three pairs stand apart. Prada's Mary Jane flats are cashmere on a rubber sole with a buckled strap, according to Mytheresa: the cashmere house shoe a cold-footed reader will actually keep on. ALAÏA's Neo Vienne is laser-cut suede on a leather sole, a slipper smart enough for lunch. Dolce & Gabbana's backless slippers are soft, lightweight cotton printed after maiolica, the hand-painted ceramics of Sicily, according to NET-A-PORTER, and the easiest to give, since they come in small to extra large.

Shearling ballerinas: the house shoe for a shoes-off party
In a shoes-off house, a shearling ballerina lets a guest stay dressed. These are made for floors; street flats are in our guide to the best ballet flats.
Roger Vivier's Pilgrim Strass is shearling all over with a jeweled buckle on a leather sole, per Mytheresa, which keeps it indoors. Gabriela Hearst's Fleur is soft shearling with a sharply pointed toe and a slight heel finished in gold-tone hardware, according to NET-A-PORTER; we include it in ivory and in black. ALAÏA's two pairs are suede and shearling on rubber soles, one of them inspired by classical Japanese shoes, according to Saks. Burberry wraps a Mary Jane in shearling and puts its Check on the strap and footbed.
A fluffy upper grips the heel poorly, so if her heel slips out of ballet flats, choose a Mary Jane.

Designer slippers for men: house mules and fold-down loafers
Most men want one house pair that does not look like a bath mat. Bottega Veneta's Rocco is nappa leather with an elasticized notched vamp, and its Sunday is lambskin in a graduated Intrecciato weave; both sit on leather soles, according to Bergdorf Goodman. Gucci's Casanova is a Horsebit slipper lined in merino wool on a leather sole, per Gucci. Prada's men's mules have a gathered leather apron on a rubber sole, according to Saks, so they can take out the recycling. Tod's suede slipper loafers sit on a grooved rubber outsole with the house's pebbles on the heel. TOTEME's men's loafer is the shearling option: soft nappa lined in short-pile shearling, with elasticated trims so it slips on, according to MR PORTER.
At the playful end, Givenchy's Puffy is an open-toe suede mule with a tonal logo patch, and Balenciaga's Furry open mules are a furry polyester upper on a TPU sole with the house's embroidered logo, per Saks: a fleece slide with a label, not a shearling.

Fold-down heels: two shoes for the price of one suitcase slot
A collapsible heel counter is the cleverest idea in men's slippers. Saint Laurent's leather pair, which Neiman Marcus calls a smoking slipper, has an almond apron toe, a diamond-quilted insole and a heel counter that can be worn up or folded down. Givenchy's Label loafer in taupe suede has the same collapsible back, per Bergdorf Goodman, and Bottega Veneta's Daddy is nubuck with the house's leather knot and a collapsible back for wearing as a slide. Gucci's Horsebit mule, in soft dark brown leather on a leather sole according to Gucci, is backless from the start. For a man with a sense of humor, Jacquemus's Les Derbie is a lace-up derby with the back cut away, on a cork outsole; Casablanca's loafer mules carry gold-foil logos, according to Saks.
- Taupe suede fold-down loafers, gray flannel drawstring trousers and a navy cashmere crewneck.
- Black collapsible-heel slippers with charcoal trousers and a white Oxford shirt on a flight, heel down on board.

Indoor or outdoor slippers? Read the sole on the listing
The sole decides whether a slipper can step outside, and the listing's composition line is the only reliable place to find it. Here are the picks above, sorted by what their listings say.
| The listing says | Examples in this guide | Where we would wear them |
|---|---|---|
| Rubber sole | Miu Miu's shearling penny mules, Roger Vivier's Slidy Viv', Jil Sander's Elbe (Vibram), ALAÏA's shearling ballerinas, Prada's cashmere Mary Janes and men's mules, Tod's | Tile, stairs, the mailbox, dry pavement |
| Leather sole | Gucci's Casanova, The Row's Marc, ALAÏA's Neo Vienne, Roger Vivier's Pilgrim Strass, Bottega Veneta's Rocco, Tom Ford's Nicolas | Carpet, wood floors and car to door; careful on wet stone and polished stairs |
| Cork | Jacquemus's Les Derbie | Dry floors and dry streets |
| Not stated | Loewe's Toy, The Row's Casa, Givenchy's Puffy | Treat as indoor until you have seen the sole |
For an older parent, the sole is a safety question. The National Institute on Aging lists backless shoes among the footwear that can raise the risk of a fall, advises nonskid, rubber-soled, low-heeled shoes, and warns against walking on stairs or floors in slippers with smooth soles, in its guide to falls and fractures in older adults. We use that as a shopping filter, not a safety rating: in this guide, Prada's cashmere Mary Janes and ALAÏA's shearling ballerinas are listed with a closed heel, a buckled strap and a rubber sole. If a parent has balance problems or has fallen before, their doctor or a physical therapist is the person to ask.
How to size luxury slippers: half sizes, shearling and European numbers
Slippers fail as gifts on fit, not taste. Our stylists' rules, and what the houses say:
- Full shearling packs down. In our experience the wool compresses under the foot over the first weeks, so a fully lined pair should feel close on day one. Between half sizes, take the smaller in a shearling-lined slipper.
- Velvet and leather hold their length. A structured velvet slipper on a leather sole fits the way a loafer does, so start from the loafer size, and between half sizes our stylists take the larger, since nothing inside it packs down.
- Backless forgives, closed does not. A mule can be half a size long without trouble; a closed slipper that is long will slip at the heel.
- Read the house note. Saks says ALAÏA's Neo Vienne runs small and recommends a size up, and notes that Dolce & Gabbana's leather slipper loafers run small. A note like that outranks your usual size.
- Check the scale. Many pairs here use Italian or European numbers with half sizes. Tod's men's slipper loafers are listed in UK sizes with the US beside them, a UK 7 shown as a US 8.5; Dolce & Gabbana's printed cotton pair is sold in small to extra large.
To find a size without asking, read the insole of flats or loafers already in the closet, then adjust with the rules above.
Caring for shearling, suede and velvet slippers
This is the routine we follow at home; the maker's label comes first when it says otherwise.
- Shearling: shake out after each wear, let damp pairs dry at room temperature away from a radiator, and lift flattened wool with a soft brush. If you wear one pair every day, alternate it with a second.
- Suede: spray with a protector before the first wear and again each season, brush with a crepe brush once dry, and keep suede slippers inside on wet days.
- Velvet: brush in the direction of the pile with a soft clothes brush, steam a crushed patch from a distance, and never wear velvet in rain.
- Leather soles: scuff them lightly before polished stairs, or ask a cobbler for a thin rubber half-sole if the pair will go outside.
Luxury slippers as a gift: who gets which pair
- A partner: the best shearling you can afford, in a color already in their loungewear.
- A parent: a closed heel and a rubber sole, as above.
- The host: velvet slippers for the party they throw, or shearling ballerinas if theirs is a shoes-off house.
- The traveler: a fold-down loafer, which does the work of two pairs in a carry-on.
Most pairs here cost roughly $800 to $1,600; the printed cotton pair is the one under $300, and the dearest shearling and velvet pairs go past $2,000. Sized gifts are the ones to buy early: Thanksgiving is Thursday, November 26, and Hanukkah runs from sundown on Friday, December 4, to nightfall on Saturday, December 12. For the rest of the list, see our holiday gift guide for her, the holiday gift guide for him and our luxury stocking stuffers. Not sure which shape suits the house? Ask our AI stylist to match a slipper to the loungewear and evening clothes already in the closet.
How we chose
We read every listing for the sole, the lining and the size system, and describe a sole as rubber or leather only where the listing says so. We looked at every photograph we could load, because the color field misleads: Proenza Schouler's whipstitched moccasins are listed as scarlet and photograph as a mustard tan. Dolce & Gabbana's embroidered mule, listed as blue, is black. Gucci's photographs would not load for us, so the four Gucci pairs are described from Gucci's own product text. We named faux fur and polyester as what they are, kept to new, full-price pairs from houses on Vêtir's luxury list, and left out every pair already in our pajamas, loungewear, loafer and ballet flat guides.
Frequently asked questions
What are the best luxury slipper brands?
For shearling, Prada, Miu Miu, Roger Vivier and Brunello Cucinelli; for velvet evening slippers, The Row and Tom Ford; for loafer-slippers, Gucci's Horsebit mules and Saint Laurent's fold-down pairs; for quiet house slippers, The Row and Loro Piana; and for men's house slippers, Bottega Veneta.
Can you wear slippers outside?
Only if the listing says the sole is rubber. Jil Sander's Elbe has a Vibram sole and Prada's men's mules a rubber one, so both can manage a dry street. Leather-soled velvet and satin slippers should stay indoors or go car to door.
Should shearling slippers be tight or loose?
Close-fitting at first. In our experience the wool compresses with wear, so a shearling-lined pair that feels roomy in the first week will feel loose by January. Between half sizes, choose the smaller.
Are velvet slippers formal?
They are evening shoes for parties you host, dinners at home and festive evenings out, but strict black tie still calls for patent shoes. Women can wear velvet slippers with evening trousers or a long skirt anywhere the walk is short and dry.
What are the best slippers for an elderly parent?
We start with a closed heel and a listing that says rubber sole. The National Institute on Aging recommends nonskid, rubber-soled, low-heeled shoes and names backless shoes and smooth-soled slippers among the footwear that can raise the risk of a fall. For a parent with balance problems or a past fall, ask their doctor or a physical therapist.
