The Best Midi Skirts for Fall and Winter: Satin, Pleated, Wool, Leather and Evening

The best midi skirts for fall and winter are a dark wool A-line or pleated skirt for weekdays, a satin skirt that can go out at night, and one leather or knit skirt you will wear far more often than you expect. The hem matters more than the label. A midi ends anywhere from just below the knee to just above the ankle, and our stylists place the hem where the leg narrows, never across the widest part of the calf. Read the fiber as well: a lot of luxury satin is viscose or acetate, which is fine, but it behaves differently from silk.

Below: how to place the hem for your height, how to read fiber, waistband and lining, eight edits by shape and fabric, a ninth under $1,000, then what to wear on top, which shoes suit each hem length, and 15 outfit formulas from the office to a holiday party.

Midi skirts: where the hem should hit

Three skirts all sold as midis can look like three different garments on the same woman, because the word covers close to a foot of leg. Our stylists place the hem by the leg, not by the name on the listing.

  • Just below the knee. The most practical length for work, stairs and a car. It hides the top of a knee boot and shows the slimmest part of the lower leg, which is why our stylists start women under about 5 foot 4 at this length.
  • Mid-calf, just below the calf muscle. The length most of the skirts in this guide are cut to, and the one our stylists find suits the most legs. It needs a plan for shoes, covered further down.
  • Lower calf, a few inches above the ankle bone. Long and fluid. It looks deliberate with ankle boots and flats; on a petite frame it wants a tucked or cropped top so the skirt does not swallow you.

The length our stylists steer clients away from is the widest part of the calf. A hem that stops there makes the leg look heavier, and in our experience it is behind most complaints that a midi looks dowdy.

Measure before you buy. Stand in the shoes you will wear most with the skirt and have someone measure from where the waistband will sit down to the point where you want the hem. Then compare that number with the listing. Prada gives its camel wool circle skirt as about 31.5 inches from waist to hem, and on the 5-foot-10 model in its photographs it ends at mid-calf; on a woman five inches shorter the same skirt would reach roughly the lower calf. When a listing gives only the model's height, compare where the hem sits on her leg with where you want it on yours. Rise changes the answer too: a skirt cut to sit low on the hip, as Khaite describes its Nania, falls longer than the same length cut for the natural waist.

Waistband, rise and lining

  • Elastic and pull-on waists (most knits, and Rabanne's satin skirt) are comfortable through a long dinner but leave a ridge under a fitted top. Wear the top out, or choose a knit that stops at the waistband.
  • Banded and bandless waists take a tucked shirt or fine knit cleanly. A bandless, faced waist, like the one on Proenza Schouler's Irine suede skirt, is the flattest under a tuck.
  • Lining earns its keep in winter. A lined wool or leather skirt slides over tights instead of climbing them, and it holds its shape after you sit. An unlined wool skirt, such as Prada's circle skirt, is softer to wear and wants a half slip over tights.

Silk, viscose, acetate and polyester: reading the label

Satin is a weave, not a fiber. A satin skirt can be silk or a manufactured fiber, and only the composition line on the listing tells you which: four of the eight satin skirts in our edit below are viscose or a viscose blend.

  • Viscose is a rayon, and the most common kind. A textile-science chapter in Louisiana State University's research archive names viscose rayon and lyocell rayon as the two major regenerated cellulose fibers, and the FTC's business guide to textile labeling notes that the international ISO standard "uses the name viscose for the predominant form of rayon." The University of Georgia Extension's guide to fibers classes rayon as a man-made cellulosic that dyes easily, wrinkles easily and is weaker when wet. McQueen's lace-trimmed satin skirt and Dries Van Noten's Sibanna are viscose satin; Khaite's Nania is 100 percent viscose.
  • Acetate is a separate fiber made from cellulose acetate. The same UGA guide warns that acetone, the solvent in nail polish remover, destroys it on contact, that it builds static, and that it needs care when pressed because it is heat-sensitive. Khaite's Loxley pencil skirt is acetate, and acetate turns up in many skirt linings.
  • Polyester keeps a heat-set pleat and barely wrinkles; the UGA guide adds that it collects static. Max Mara's sunray-pleated georgette skirt is 100 percent polyester, and Valentino Garavani's asymmetric plissé is 54 percent polyester and 46 percent silk.

None of these is a reason to pass on a skirt: a heavy viscose or acetate satin is often more opaque over tights than a thin silk, and a polyester plissé survives a day at a desk. What matters is that the price and the care fit the fiber.

Satin and slip midi skirts

A satin midi is the evening skirt that also works by day, because it takes its mood from the top: a gray cashmere crewneck turns it into a lunch outfit, a silk camisole and a long coat make it dinner. Choose one with enough body to hide the seams of your tights, and decide where you want the detail. Valentino Garavani's gray silk satin is straight, with a high side slit edged in lace. Loro Piana layers asymmetric silk-satin panels over a pencil underskirt, so the outer layer moves while the inner one keeps the line. Khaite's Nania is a low-slung A-line in double-faced viscose satin, and Rabanne's black satin, a blend of viscose, silk and nylon on an elastic waist, has scalloped lace at the hem. Isabel Marant's navy Alexandra, a silk-blend satin, runs longer, to the lower calf, with lace along a front slit. Etro's navy paisley satin wants a plain cream knit and nothing else patterned. For the full layering method (a fine turtleneck under, a cropped sweater over, tights and boots), our guide to wearing a slip dress in winter applies to a slip skirt as well.

Pleated midi skirts

Pleats are where fiber makes the biggest practical difference. Technology in Australia 1788-1988, published by the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering, records that the SI-RO-SET process was released in 1957, when wool was losing ground to polyesters that "can be heat set to give permanent creases and pleats". Wool could not be heat set the same way: it needed a chemical treatment just before final pressing to hold a permanent pleat. In our experience the difference still shows: wool pleats soften and open with wear and want pressing by a good cleaner a few times a season, while polyester and polyester-silk plissé stays crisp and folds into a suitcase.

  • Knife pleats, all facing one way, are the kilt shape and look best in a check. Burberry's Elydia has structured knife pleats in a wool-blend tartan twill, and the house's charcoal check skirt has hand-ironed pleats, according to the listings. Brunello Cucinelli's brown tweed, pleated all the way round, is 70 percent wool and 30 percent polyamide.
  • Box and inverted pleats lie flatter at the hip and swing below it. Brunello Cucinelli's gray wool blend, with its pleats stitched down at the front, is the office version, and Prada's charcoal wool opens at the front onto semi-sheer silk inserts.
  • Sunray and accordion plissé radiate from the waist and move with every step: Max Mara in polyester georgette, Balmain in a black plissé crepe made in France, Valentino Garavani with an asymmetric hem.

Pleats should lie closed when you stand still. If they spread open across the hip, go up a size or choose pleats that start lower. And keep the top short or tucked: a hip-length sweater over pleats adds bulk exactly where the pleats already add it.

Wool A-line and flared midi skirts

If you buy one skirt from this guide, make it a dark wool A-line. It works with a knit at the office, with boots on a Saturday and with a silk blouse at dinner, and in our experience a good one lasts a decade. Look for wool with some weight, a waist that sits where your natural waist is, and a flare that starts below the hip rather than at it. Burberry's belted skirt is water-resistant wool with a double-breasted-style button front and a detachable buckle belt, in burgundy. Gabriela Hearst's Patterson is 90 percent virgin wool and 10 percent cashmere, slim through the hip with a wide sweep. Brunello Cucinelli's ivory stretch gabardine has an inverted front pleat, Oscar de la Renta's glen check mixes wool, silk and cashmere, and Jacquemus's Fiocco flares like a trumpet from the knee. Prada's camel circle skirt is the fullest of the group, on an elastic waist.

Pencil and column midi skirts

Slits are one of the ten fall/winter 2026 womenswear trends on Tagwalk's trend page, which is convenient, because a straight skirt below the knee needs an opening to walk in. Where the opening sits decides where the skirt can go. A back vent or slit is the office version: Givenchy's dark navy pinstripe, Thom Browne's gray windowpane with its walking vent, and Valentino Garavani's chevron bouclé all open at the back. A front or side slit, like Jil Sander's curved one or the high slit on Khaite's corseted Loxley, belongs to the evening.

Buy a pencil skirt for your hip measurement and have the waist taken in if it gapes; a tailor can take in a waist far more easily than let out a hip. Our stylists' fit check: you should be able to pinch about an inch of fabric at each hip, and the hem should still cover your knee when you sit. Balance the narrow line with volume on top: a boxy cropped jacket, an oversized cardigan, or a big sweater worn half-tucked.

Knit midi skirts

A knit midi is the warmest skirt here, but knits have two weaknesses: they seat, bagging at the back after a long sit, and they cling to tights. A dense, wool-led knit recovers better than a loose one in our experience. ALAÏA's flared black skirt is 94 percent wool, and its charcoal is a mohair, polyamide and wool blend; Gabriela Hearst's Eden is pure cashmere with a speckled Donegal look and a fluted hem. Bottega Veneta knits its navy skirt in silk and finishes it with a fringed hem, Proenza Schouler's Joelle is mostly mohair with silk and nylon, and Etro's paisley knit is a viscose and wool blend. Brunello Cucinelli's light brown column is the exception: 52 percent nylon, 37 percent polyester and 11 percent mohair, with small sequins in the yarn, which makes it a party knit rather than a warm one. A half slip stops a knit catching on tights. Wear a knit skirt with the matching sweater and it reads as a dress; our guide to the best knit dresses covers knit sets in detail.

Leather and suede midi skirts

A leather midi is the investment that looks better in its third winter than its first. Leather gives little at the hip, so fit it there and let a tailor adjust the waist. Lambskin is soft and drapes, which suits Balmain's draped skirt and Givenchy's asymmetric panels; calfskin is firmer, as in Chanel's black skirt from its Métiers d'art collection, which the listing describes as calf-length. ALAÏA's low-rise lambskin, in a shade the house calls prune, is half-lined in cupro, and Tom Ford's snake-effect skirt in ruby has slits front and back. Proenza Schouler's Irine is suede, and its listing asks for a leather specialist for cleaning. The Irine, the ALAÏA and the Tom Ford sit just below the knee on the models rather than at mid-calf, the shortest midis in this edit and the easiest to wear with a knee boot. Store leather on a clip hanger by the waistband, away from radiators. Prune and ruby are as easy to wear as black. For leather trousers, see our guide to the best leather pants.

Sequin, metallic and evening midi skirts

Sequins are easier to wear at midi length than on a mini, because the length reads as evening clothes rather than costume. Most are synthetic: Dolce & Gabbana's gathered sequined skirt is 100 percent polyester and Maison Margiela's draped one 93 percent polyester. Sequins snag chunky knits and bag chains, so pair them with fine-gauge cashmere or silk and carry a clutch. For metallic without sequins, Valentino Garavani knits its gold skirt in ribbed Lurex, Rabanne weaves metallic fibers into a wrap jacquard, and Dior's Byzance Garden skirt blends wool, silk, viscose and metallic polyester. Oscar de la Renta's silk party skirt is gathered and embroidered with ferns at the hem. Our guide to holiday party outfits covers dress codes.

Velvet, lace and tulle

Velvet looks richest by candlelight: Emilia Wickstead's black velvet pencil sits high on the waist and stops just below the knee, and Tom Ford's lynx-pattern skirt is a compact velvet knit with viscose in the blend. Lace and tulle need a plan for what goes underneath. Dolce & Gabbana's Chantilly lace is rayon and nylon over a silk lining, Prada's floral lace is cotton, and Oscar de la Renta's guipure is polyester lined in silk. Dolce & Gabbana's layered tulle is sheer, photographed over black briefs, so plan a black slip or shorts underneath. Khaite's Sydni is silk with an organza overlay, and Brunello Cucinelli's pleated lynx print is pure silk organza.

How to wear a midi skirt in winter

On top: tuck, half-tuck or cropped knit

  • Full tuck for A-line, flared and pleated skirts. The waist is the narrowest point and the skirt adds the volume below it, so a fine knit or a shirt tucked all the way in keeps that shape. Pull an inch of blouse back out so it does not look strained.
  • Half-tuck, front only, for pencil and column skirts worn with a thicker sweater. It shows the waistband without the bulk of a full tuck. Skip it with pleated or gathered waists, where the extra layer sits on top of the pleats.
  • Cropped knit for elastic waists and knit skirts. A sweater that ends at the waistband hides the ridge and makes the skirt start where the knit stops.
  • Jackets: short and fitted over a full skirt; boxy and cropped, or long and narrow, over a pencil. A long coat should cover the hem or stop well above it.

Shoes and boots by hem length

  • Just below the knee: knee boots whose tops disappear under the hem when you stand, or pumps and slingbacks with sheer tights.
  • Mid-calf: this is the length that creates the boot-and-skirt gap. Either wear a tall boot whose shaft stays under the hem as you walk, or go low (ankle boots, loafers, ballet flats) with opaque tights matched to the shoe, so the leg reads as one line. A boot that stops exactly at the hem is the combination our stylists avoid.
  • Lower calf: ankle boots, loafers and flats look intentional, and tall boots work too.

For calf measurements and heel heights, see our guide to the best knee-high boots. Tights follow the darkest piece. Wear black with black, charcoal, burgundy and navy skirts. With camel, brown and cream, choose chocolate or a sheer skin tone. The slip dress guide linked above has a denier chart.

Midi skirts under $1,000

Below $1,000 the edit leans on wool blends, cashmere blends and honest synthetics. Max Mara's two pieces are wool and cashmere (its dark brown skirt's listing allows a cold hand wash), Stella McCartney's body-con skirt is 100 percent virgin wool, and Victoria Beckham offers two in wool: a charcoal virgin wool softly pleated from the hip, and a gray draped skirt in wool and mohair. Dries Van Noten's draped gray jersey is cotton, and its listing allows machine washing at 30 degrees Celsius. Proenza Schouler's White Label tweed is 85 percent polyester and 15 percent wool: the look of tweed for less, with less of wool's warmth.

Which midi skirts to invest in, and which to wear for one season

Buy once: a dark wool A-line or pleated skirt in charcoal, navy, black or burgundy; a leather or suede midi; and a satin skirt in black or a deep color. Buy for a season: sequins, metallic jacquards, sheer tulle and strong prints. They are the pieces people remember, which is also why they tire quickly.

The mistakes we see most are a hem at the widest part of the calf, a strip of bare leg between ankle boot and mid-calf hem, a long sweater left loose over pleats, and a thigh-high slit at the office.

How we chose

Between August 6 and September 26, 2026, skirts were the fifth most-searched product type in Vêtir's search box, counted by the number of accounts searching (46), after dresses, tops, bags and jackets, so we treated this as a working wardrobe guide rather than a trend list. We read every listing for composition, lining and waistband, then looked at the model photographs to see where each hem actually falls: several skirts sold as midis stopped at the knee and were left out, as were ankle-length pieces. We favored skirts with a long size run, kept to luxury houses and full-price pieces, and named the fiber of the pieces we describe, including the viscose, acetate and polyester ones. Start with the full skirts edit if you want to browse beyond these nine edits.

Frequently asked questions

How long is a midi skirt?

A midi ends between just below the knee and just above the ankle; the classic length is mid-calf. Measure from your waist to the point on your leg where you want the hem, in the shoes you will wear, and compare it with the skirt length on the listing.

What shoes do you wear with a midi skirt in winter?

Knee boots whose tops stay under the hem, or ankle boots, loafers and flats with opaque tights in the same color as the shoe. At mid-calf length, avoid a boot that ends exactly at the hem.

Are midi skirts flattering on petite women?

Yes. Our stylists put petite clients in a hem just below the knee or where the calf narrows, with the top tucked or cropped to show the waist. A lower-calf length on a petite frame needs a heel or a pointed shoe.

What top goes with a midi skirt?

Tuck a fine knit or a shirt into A-line and pleated skirts, half-tuck a thicker sweater into a pencil, and wear a cropped sweater over elastic waists and knit skirts.

Is a satin skirt made of silk?

Not always. Satin is a weave, and luxury satin skirts are often viscose, acetate or polyester. Check the composition on the listing; it changes the care, and acetate is damaged by nail polish remover.

Are midi skirts in style for fall 2026?

Yes. Fitted shapes and slits are both on Tagwalk's fall/winter 2026 trend list, and the skirt leads into spring: Prada titled its spring 2027 show in Milan "The Skirt": 63 looks by Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons, and the house's show notes call the skirt "a Prada obsession."
