What to Wear to a Bridal Shower: Outfits for Guests, Bridesmaids, Mothers and the Bride

What to wear to a bridal shower comes down to one idea: dress as you would for a smart daytime lunch. A knee-to-midi dress, or a fine knit or silk blouse with a midi skirt, in a definite color and with a heel you can stand in for two or three hours, suits almost every shower. The Knot's guest guide pitches the level at anything you would wear to a fancy brunch or a matinee, and asks guests to leave white, and pale shades that photograph as white, to the bride. The Emily Post Institute puts the ideal shower between two months and two weeks before the wedding, so a February or March shower usually celebrates a spring wedding while the guests are still dressing for late winter.
Below, our editors translate the venue into a dress code, then cover cold-weather and warm-weather outfits, dressy separates, the colors to avoid, what bridesmaids and mothers wear, what the bride wears, and the shoes and coats that see you through the afternoon.
What to wear to a bridal shower, by venue
Shower invitations rarely name a dress code, so read the place and the hour. The Knot calls the venue the top indicator of how dressy a shower will be, and in practice a backyard lunch and a private room at a restaurant ask for different clothes, even for the same bride. Emily Post notes that shower guests are normally wedding guests too, which is a useful check: aim for the outfit you would be happy to be photographed in beside the family you will see again at the wedding. The table below is how our editors read the usual settings.
| The shower is | How dressy | What to wear | Shoes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brunch or lunch at a home | Dressy casual | A knit or printed day dress, or a fine sweater with a midi skirt | Low block heels, loafers or flats |
| Lunch in a restaurant's private room | Polished daytime | A tailored midi dress in wool, crepe or tweed, or a printed silk dress | Slingbacks or pumps, 45 to 70mm |
| Afternoon tea at a hotel or club | The dressiest daytime | A structured dress with sleeves, or a silk blouse with a full skirt | Pumps or slingbacks |
| A garden, courtyard or tented lawn | Garden-party daytime | A floral midi in cotton poplin or silk, plus a cardigan or cropped jacket | Block heels or wedges that will not sink into grass |
| An evening couples' shower | Semi-formal | A cocktail dress or dressy separates | Your usual evening heel |
| An activity shower (cooking, flowers, pottery) | Casual but polished | Tailored trousers and a knit, with sleeves you can push up | Flats or loafers |
Two things can move you up or down a row. Time: we treat a shower that starts at six as an evening party, because Emily Post's attire guide advises erring toward formality when an event is later than 6 p.m. That is why we put an evening couples' shower (Emily Post calls them "Jack and Jill" showers) at semi-formal, for everyone on the guest list. Theme: The Knot suggests leaning into a theme when there is one, such as florals at a garden-party shower, and names gloves and fascinators as the accessories for a tea-party shower; check the invitation in case the hosts have asked for them.
Bridal shower guest outfits for February and March
The same late-winter invitation means different clothes in different parts of the country. According to NOAA's 1991–2020 climate normals, the normal February high is 42°F in New York's Central Park and 36°F at Chicago O'Hare, against 66°F at Los Angeles International Airport and 78°F at Miami International Airport. By March, New York's normal high reaches only 50°F and Chicago's 47°F. So a shower dress for Manhattan or Chicago is a wool or knit dress with tights and a proper coat, while the same party in Southern California or Florida takes silk or cotton.
In a cold city, the strongest bridal shower dress is a day dress in a winter fabric: fine merino or rib knit, wool crepe, tweed, bouclé or a woven check. These fabrics look right at lunch, where satin and sequins read as evening, and they stay comfortable in an overheated dining room. Choose sleeves, even short ones, and a hem between the knee and mid-calf that lets you sit on a low sofa without tugging at it. With a knee-length or midi dress, sheer or opaque tights are both fine at a daytime party; The Knot's guide notes you may want tights for a fall or winter shower and closed toes for a rainy one. As a rule of thumb, sheer tights in black or close to your skin tone suit silk and crepe, and opaque tights suit knits, tweed and pleated wool.
- Coral merino, cognac suede. A long-sleeved rib-knit dress in coral or tomato red, cognac suede slingbacks and gold hoops. Proenza Schouler's fine merino knit dresses have the right proportions for it: a narrow body, full-length sleeves and movement at the hem.
- Navy wool, belted. A full-skirted wool day dress with a belt, an Oscar de la Renta staple, with pearl studs and navy or burgundy pumps.
- Tweed with one color. A black-and-white tweed or a gray check dress with a jewel-toned bag and patent pumps. The texture does the job that shine does at night.
- Stripes and a cardigan. A sleeveless striped knit midi under a cropped cashmere cardigan, which comes off once the room warms up.
Unsure how dressy the room will be? Ask our AI stylist with the venue, the start time and the forecast, and it will suggest a dress, a shoe and a coat that work together.

The spring bridal shower dress: florals on a colored ground
For a late-March shower in the South or the West, or any shower held in a garden, florals are the natural choice. The detail that matters is the ground color. A print on navy, black, cobalt, green or coral reads as color in every photograph; a print on white or ivory reads as white from across the room, and it will sit beside the bride in the gift-opening pictures.
Cotton poplin, pongé, jacquard and silk crepe de chine are the right weights for daytime; leave chiffon and heavy satin for the evening. A long-sleeved floral in a thicker weave works in March, when mornings are still cool, while a sleeveless dress with wide straps needs a cardigan or cropped jacket everywhere but the warmest climates.
- Navy florals and a belt. A long-sleeved, fit-and-flare floral in the Emilia Wickstead mold, with navy suede slingbacks and a small top-handle bag.
- Big blooms on a dark ground. The full-skirted peony and rose prints Carolina Herrera and Dolce & Gabbana put on navy and black carry a garden theme with enough contrast to photograph well.
- Blue jacquard, sleeveless. A full-skirted floral jacquard on a blue ground, a cropped jacket or cardigan, and navy pumps; the weight of the weave keeps it looking dressed in daylight.
- Green on green. A green brushstroke or leaf print with a square neck, a camel cardigan and tan block heels for a courtyard or conservatory.

Dressy separates: a bridal shower outfit that is not a dress
The Knot's guest guide lists dressy separates, meaning tops, blouses, trousers and skirts, alongside dresses and jumpsuits as proper shower attire. Separates are also the easiest way to wear what you already own: a fine cashmere sweater or a silk blouse, a midi skirt with movement, and one good shoe.
- Satin and cashmere. A gathered satin midi skirt with a fine crewneck tucked in, suede pumps and small gold earrings.
- Pleats in winter wool. An accordion-pleated wool skirt with a tonal knit, opaque tights and a low heel or a loafer.
- Color below the waist. A terracotta pleated skirt or a swirling silk print with a navy, camel or chocolate top keeps the color bright and the whole look grown-up.
- Trousers for an activity shower. Tailored wool trousers, a silk shirt and loafers for a cooking class or a flower-arranging afternoon, where a full skirt gets in the way.
What The Knot rules out is the casual end of separates: jeans, sneakers and athleisure. Tailored trousers are as relaxed as a shower outfit should get.

Colors to wear to a bridal shower, and the ones to avoid
White belongs to the bride, whether or not she wears it. The Knot describes white as reserved for the guest of honor to take or leave, and asks guests to skip light shades that can look white in photographs, butter yellow included. The Emily Post Institute counts cream as white at weddings, and says that an outfit on the light side of beige should not look bridal in its cut or accessories. That guidance is written for weddings; we extend it to the shower, where guests stand beside the bride in most of the photographs. In practice, we would rule out ivory, cream, champagne, pale blush and ice blue as your main color, along with white-ground prints.
What works instead: saturated or mid-tone colors that read clearly next to white, such as coral, cobalt, navy, red, green, chocolate and a true pink. Black is not off-limits, but at a party that starts at noon it looks best in a daytime fabric, such as tweed, wool crepe or a black-ground floral, with a colored bag or shoe. If the bridesmaids have been asked to wear a particular color, choose another.
The Knot's other exclusions are about register rather than color: night-out clothes belong at the bachelorette party, and anything formal enough for the wedding itself overshoots a daytime shower. We would count sequins, lamé, cutouts and very short hems as night-out, and an evening gown as wedding-level.
What bridesmaids, the maid of honor and the mothers wear
Bridesmaids and the maid of honor
Unless the bride asks for a color or a style, bridesmaids dress like the other guests, according to The Knot. The difference is work: bridesmaids may be asked to help with setup, gift tracking or games, so The Knot suggests block heels or flats for anyone on her feet, and extra polish for a maid of honor who stands beside the bride while she opens gifts. Emily Post points out that bridesmaids are not obliged to host a shower, though they may if they want to.
For a working bridesmaid, we would choose a dress with pockets, or a skirt and knit you can move in, sleeves that push up, and a 45 to 55mm block heel, with flats in the car for the cleanup.
The mother of the bride and the mother of the groom
The mother of the bride will talk to nearly everyone, appear in many of the photographs and may give a toast or run a game, as The Knot's mother-of-the-bride shower guide points out. The same guide says to avoid white and to choose something clearly different from the wedding-day outfit; a stylist quoted in it describes the shower dress as the livelier of the two. We would add three practical points: a neckline that frames the face in photographs (a bateau, a jewel neck or a soft V), sleeves or a jacket so the look holds in a cold room, and a heel low enough to stand through the gift opening.
One mother of the bride asked our AI stylist for a skirt and blouse for a summer wedding, with nothing white or nude, and the same brief works for the shower. Structured day dresses from houses such as Oscar de la Renta, Carolina Herrera and Emilia Wickstead suit the role: defined waists, sleeves and fabrics that keep their shape through two hours of sitting and standing. The mother of the groom follows the same rules, and if both mothers are hosting, a quick exchange about colors keeps them from matching.
What should the bride wear to her bridal shower?
White is hers if she wants it: The Knot treats it as the guest of honor's to take or leave. For a February or March shower, winter white means fabric with texture and weight: a ribbed merino dress like Balmain's, a wool-and-cashmere knit blazer over ivory trousers or a skirt, or wool crepe with lace or bow details. A sculpted knit from Alaïa or knitted tailoring from Gabriela Hearst looks special without looking like a preview of the wedding dress.
Think about the gift opening, because it is the part of the afternoon with the most photographs. She will sit for a long stretch, so a skirt that sits without riding up matters, and sleeves she can push back make unwrapping easier. A bride who prefers color can wear one of the pale shades guests have avoided, such as blush or butter yellow, and still stand out. For more ways to wear it, see our winter white guide or the bridal and bridal-party dresses edit.

Shoes, bags and coats for a daytime shower
A shower is two or three hours of standing, mingling and perching, often in a house with stone steps or a garden path. A slingback or pump between 45 and 70mm is the sweet spot: dressy enough for a hotel tea, low enough for a long afternoon. The Knot suggests skipping stilettos at a brunch shower in favor of sandals, flats or kitten heels. On a lawn, choose a block heel or a wedge, because a stiletto sinks. In February, closed toes and a sheer or opaque tight are practical as well as correct. Cognac or navy suede, a square-buckled pump from Roger Vivier or a colored patent slingback all sit well with day dresses.
For the bag, a shoulder or top-handle style that holds a phone, a card and a lipstick is enough; carry the gift separately, since it goes onto the gift table when you arrive. In February, wear a coat long enough to cover your hem, so a knit dress does not crush under a short jacket on the way in.

How we chose
Every piece here comes from a top luxury house sold on Vêtir, and each was in stock in four or more sizes when we selected it in late September 2026. We left white, ivory, cream and pale shades out of every guest edit and kept them for the bride's, and we checked each product's photographs rather than trusting color names, which are not always accurate. For guests, we favored daytime fabrics (wool, tweed, merino, crepe, cotton poplin and printed silk), sleeves for winter and hems from the knee to mid-calf; for shoes, low and mid heels you can stand in all afternoon. Frequently asked questions
What is appropriate to wear to a bridal shower?
Polished daytime clothes: a knee-to-midi dress, a jumpsuit, or dressy separates such as a silk blouse or fine knit with a midi skirt. The Knot's benchmark is what you would wear to a fancy brunch or a matinee. Let the venue set the level: a home lunch is dressy casual, a hotel tea is the dressiest daytime.
Can you wear white to a bridal shower?
No. White is reserved for the bride, whether or not she wears it, and The Knot advises skipping pale shades that photograph as white, such as butter yellow. The Emily Post Institute counts cream as white at weddings, and we apply the same rule at the shower.
Can you wear black to a bridal shower?
Yes, in a daytime fabric such as tweed, wool crepe or a black-ground floral. Add color with a bag, shoes or jewelry so the outfit reads as a party rather than a meeting.
Can I wear pants to a bridal shower?
Yes. Tailored trousers with a silk blouse or fine knit count as dressy separates, which The Knot lists as appropriate. Jeans, sneakers and athleisure are what it rules out.
What should the mother of the bride wear to the bridal shower?
A structured day dress, or a skirt and blouse, in a color other than white, with sleeves or a jacket and a heel she can stand in. She will be in many photographs and may give a toast, so a neckline that frames the face is worth choosing on purpose.
What should the bride wear to her own bridal shower?
White or ivory if she likes, since it is hers, in a fabric that suits the season: a ribbed knit or a knitted blazer in February, cotton or lace in warm weather. Whatever she chooses should look clearly different from the wedding dress.
