What to Wear to Coachella: Luxury Festival Outfits for Heat, Dust and Cold Nights

What to wear to Coachella comes down to three conditions: a hot afternoon, a night that cools quickly, and a long day on your feet on grass and dust. Wear breathable, washable fabrics such as cotton, linen and denim; broken-in boots or leather sneakers with closed toes; a hat that stays on in the wind and wraparound sunglasses; and carry a jacket for after dark in a small bag that fits the festival's size limit. According to the festival's website, Coachella 2027 runs over two weekends, April 9 to 11 and April 16 to 18, at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California.

Below: what the desert does between noon and midnight, last year's rules on bags and bottles and how to dress around them, Coachella outfits for day and night, the boots that last the distance, and a weekend packing list, with pieces from Isabel Marant, Chloé, Gabriela Hearst, Loewe, Saint Laurent and other houses.

Coachella weather: hot afternoons, cool nights and wind

The Coachella Valley is desert, and the temperature swing is what catches people out. NOAA's 1991–2020 climate normals for Indio put the average mid-April high at about 85°F and the average low around 62°F. Readings outside town run cooler still: at the airport in nearby Thermal, April's average low is about 55°F. Those are averages, so a warm spell or a cold snap can move both numbers, but plan on a swing of 20 degrees or more between mid-afternoon and the small hours. Last year's festival FAQ put the end of the music at around 1 a.m. on Friday and Saturday and around midnight on Sunday, so you will be there for the coolest part of the night.

Then there is the wind. On Sunday, April 12, 2026, the last day of that year's first weekend, the South Coast Air Quality Management District issued a windblown dust advisory for the Coachella Valley, forecasting high winds that evening and advising anyone at outdoor events to take more breaks when dust levels are high. Spring wind is part of the valley's weather, and it shapes the whole outfit:

  • Dust shows on dark colors and on white. Mid-tones, light-wash denim, tan, olive and busy prints hide it best.
  • Choose fabrics you can wash. Cotton, linen and denim go in the machine after the weekend; dry-clean-only silk and suede hold on to the dust.
  • Wide brims and loose hems fight the wind. A bucket hat or cap stays on, and a skirt with some weight behaves better than a sheer, floaty one.

Last year's bag and bottle rules, and how to dress around them

Coachella publishes what you can bring in its festival FAQ. The rules below are the 2026 edition. The festival says it can change the list at any time and will post updated rules for 2027, so check the FAQ again before you pack.

  • Bags: in 2026, bags, backpacks, purses and handbags up to 18 by 13 by 8.5 inches were allowed, measured fully packed, and a bag had to fit into a sizing box, as at an airline's carry-on check. Fanny packs and hip bags were allowed too.
  • Chains: chains and chain wallets were on the prohibited list. We would carry a bag on a leather, nylon or canvas strap rather than test a chain strap at the gate.
  • Water: empty plastic bottles up to 64 ounces and empty plastic hydration packs up to 2 liters were allowed, with free refill stations on site. Metal and glass bottles were not.
  • Sun: hats, sunglasses and parasols were allowed, as was non-aerosol sunscreen. Aerosol sunscreen and umbrellas were not.
  • Money: the 2026 festival was cashless, so a phone and a card covered purchases.
  • Storage: lockers were available to rent, including charging lockers the festival said could hold jackets and bags, which is one answer to the question of where your night layer spends the afternoon.

The size limit is generous, but a large bag is a liability in a crowd. For a day of dancing, a belt bag or a small crossbody worn across the body keeps your hands free and your phone in front of you. Choose leather or nylon that wipes clean, and a zip rather than a flap, because dust gets into everything. Browse every designer belt bag, or see our guide to the best crossbody bags.

What to wear to Coachella: day outfits that breathe and wash

Coachella's FAQ sets no dress code beyond its list of prohibited items, which is partly why so many Coachella outfits end up as costume. Luxury festival outfits look better when they read as clothes: one request to our AI stylist, for a concert in Austin, asked for a look that was "chic but casual, not boho," and that is the right brief. Start from fabrics that breathe and wash, cover the shoulders or carry something that can, and let one piece, usually the boots or the hat, do the talking.

  • Denim and poplin: light-wash denim Bermuda shorts, a white cotton poplin shirt worn open over a tank, tan western boots, a bucket hat and a belt bag.
  • The printed dress: a cotton sundress in a small print, low-heeled ankle boots, and a denim jacket tied at the waist for later.
  • Crochet and denim: a cotton crochet top with high-rise denim shorts, cowboy boots and shield sunglasses.
  • No boots: wide linen trousers, a fitted tank, leather low-top sneakers and a raffia bucket hat.

On shorts, length is a practical choice as much as a style one. A Bermuda or a longer cutoff covers more skin through a full afternoon of sun, and a high rise keeps a belt bag sitting where it should. Mid and light washes hide dust better than black or raw indigo. For more on proportions, see our guide to how to style Bermuda shorts.

Boots and shoes for dust, grass and long walks

The festival is held on polo fields, and between the stages, the food and the exits you will cover a lot of ground, much of it on grass, packed dirt and dust, in a crowd. Shoes decide how the day goes.

  • Closed toes: crowds step on feet. A boot or a leather sneaker protects them, and keeps the dust out.
  • A low, wide heel: a stacked western heel of an inch or two walks well on grass; a stiletto sinks into turf.
  • Smooth leather over suede: leather wipes clean with a damp cloth. Suede takes the dust into the nap; if you wear it, brush it once the weekend is over.
  • Break them in: wear new boots around the house for a week first, with the socks you will wear at the festival. A cushioned sock does more for your feet than any insole.

The western boot earns its place here for reasons beyond style: a tall shaft keeps grit off your legs and out of your socks, and the boot protects your ankles in a crowd. Isabel Marant and Gabriela Hearst both treat it as a house staple, Isabel Marant on low stacked heels and Gabriela Hearst with heavier stitching, and Versace and Khaite make their own versions. If boots are not your thing, a leather low-top sneaker is the practical alternative; see our edits of the best white sneakers and the designer cowboy boots on Vêtir.

After dark: the layer you will want at midnight

With average lows in the 50s and low 60s and a wind that can pick up in the evening, you will want a layer by the time the headliners play. The denim jacket is the answer for most people: it ties around the waist in the afternoon, shrugs off dust, washes easily and looks right over everything from a slip dress to shorts.

  • Cropped over high-rise: a cropped denim jacket over high-rise shorts or a midi skirt keeps the waist visible.
  • Blouson over a dress: a roomier denim blouson over a cotton sundress, with the same boots.
  • Denim on denim: works when the washes differ clearly, a mid-blue jacket over light-wash shorts, with a white tank between them.
  • The quiet extra: a thin cashmere sweater in the bag or the locker, for the coldest hour.

Thom Browne, Versace and Loewe make the jacket in classic mid and light washes; a cropped cut sits well over high-rise shorts, and a leather-trimmed or printed version is the dressier take. Browse every designer denim jacket.

Hats, sunglasses and a scarf for sun and dust

Accessories do the protective work at a desert festival, so choose them for function first.

  • A hat that stays on: a bucket hat or a cap sits close to the head in the wind. A wide straw brim looks right at the pool and spends the festival in your hand.
  • Sunglasses that wrap: a shield or wraparound frame keeps glare and blowing grit out from the sides as well as the front. Bring a case, and clean the lenses with the cloth rather than your shirt, which drags dust across them.
  • A scarf and a mask: a silk scarf or bandana keeps dust out of your hair and off your face, but it is not a filter. On a dust-advisory day, a real mask does that job; last year's allowed list included non-costume face masks.

Balenciaga, Saint Laurent and Bottega Veneta make the most convincing shield frames; Prada's nylon and Loewe's raffia are the bucket hats we would pack. See our designer sunglasses guide, or browse every pair of designer sunglasses on Vêtir.

What to pack for a Coachella weekend

  1. Day outfits: two or three, built from cotton, linen, crochet and denim in mid-tones or prints.
  2. Shoes: one pair of broken-in boots and one pair of leather sneakers, plus cushioned socks and blister plasters.
  3. Night layer: a denim jacket, and a thin cashmere sweater for the coldest hour.
  4. Bag: a belt bag or small crossbody on a leather, nylon or canvas strap, well inside the festival's size limit.
  5. Sun: a bucket hat or cap, wraparound sunglasses with a case, and non-aerosol sunscreen.
  6. Dust: a silk scarf or bandana, and a face mask for windy evenings.
  7. Water: an empty plastic bottle or hydration pack; the 2026 limits were 64 ounces and 2 liters.
  8. Power: a phone charger, which was on the 2026 allowed list.

How we chose

  • Houses: top luxury houses that make hard-wearing festival pieces well, from Isabel Marant and Gabriela Hearst's western boots to Loewe, Thom Browne and Versace's denim.
  • Function first: low stacked heels, zip-top bags on leather or nylon straps rather than chains, shield frames that wrap, and hats that sit close in the wind.
  • Fabric: denim, cotton, nylon, raffia and smooth leather that can be washed or wiped after a dusty weekend, with a suede boot flagged as the one to brush.
  • Color: mid and light washes, tan, brown and olive, which hide dust better than black or white.
  • Price and stock: the boots, bags, denim and sunglasses were all live on Vêtir when we chose them, and each module keeps a price band around its picks, so a pair that sells out before April is replaced by a similar one at a similar price.

Frequently asked questions

When is Coachella 2027?

Coachella 2027 runs over two weekends, April 9 to 11 and April 16 to 18, at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California, according to the festival's website.

What should you not wear to Coachella?

Skip stilettos, brand-new boots and delicate dry-clean-only fabrics. Leave chain wallets and chain-strap bags at home too: chains were on the festival's 2026 prohibited list, so check the 2027 FAQ. White and black both show dust; mid-tones and prints hide it.

What shoes are best for Coachella?

Broken-in western boots or leather sneakers with closed toes and a low heel. You will be walking on grass and dust for hours, and smooth leather wipes clean more easily than suede.

How big can my bag be at Coachella?

Under the 2026 rules, bags could be up to 18 by 13 by 8.5 inches when fully packed, and fanny packs and hip bags were allowed. The festival says it can change its rules, so check its FAQ before the 2027 festival.

Does it get cold at Coachella at night?

Cooler than the afternoon, yes. NOAA's normals put mid-April lows around 62°F in Indio and about 55°F at nearby Thermal, and in 2026 the music ran until around 1 a.m. on Friday and Saturday, so bring a denim jacket or a knit.

Can you bring a water bottle to Coachella?

Under the 2026 rules, yes: an empty plastic bottle of up to 64 ounces or an empty plastic hydration pack of up to 2 liters, with free refill stations inside. Metal and glass bottles were not allowed. Check the 2027 FAQ before you go.
