What to Wear to Fashion Week: Outfits for New York, London, Milan and Paris

What to wear to fashion week, in short: dress for a long day on foot in winter weather, then add one idea people will remember. Wear a real coat, shoes you can walk miles in, tailoring or knitwear that looks finished when the coat comes off indoors, and carry one bag that holds the whole day. The four major women's weeks begin in New York, where the CFDA's Fashion Calendar lists New York Fashion Week for February 8 to 12, 2027. London's week traditionally comes next. Milan runs from February 23 to March 1, according to the Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana, and Paris from March 1 to 9, according to the Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode.
Below: the rules that hold in every city, dressing for shows versus presentations, NYFW outfits for a New York February, packing for London, Milan and Paris, street style, and the bag.
What to wear to fashion week: the rules for every city
A fashion week day is a loop: out into the cold, across the city to a venue, into a warm room where you sit or stand, and back out again, several times before dinner. Dress for the loop rather than for one photograph.
- The coat is the outfit. In February you are seen, and photographed, in your coat far more than in anything under it. Choose it first and build down.
- Shoes you have already walked in. Flat or low heels on rubber or part-rubber soles. New shoes and a full day on foot are a bad combination in any city.
- Layers that look finished indoors. Venues are warm and coats come off, so the blazer or knit underneath has to stand on its own.
- One idea per outfit. A strong color, an unusual coat or a great bag. Pick one and keep everything else plain.
- Hands free. A bag on the shoulder, gloves in a pocket, sunglasses on your face or tucked into a neckline.
- A courtesy. If you are attending a house's show, one piece from that house is a nod; a rival house's logo is not. One piece, not the whole runway look.
Three fashion week outfits that work in every city:
- A camel wrap coat, an oversized charcoal blazer, straight dark jeans, black loafers and a black leather tote.
- A burgundy coat over head-to-toe black: a fine turtleneck, wide-leg trousers and knee boots.
- A long dark-brown leather coat over a gray knit dress, with lug-sole knee boots.
Max Mara's camel wrap coats are a fashion week classic for good reason: they cover a blazer, look right with jeans and read clearly in photographs. The Row and Khaite cut long wool coats in brown and charcoal that do the same job more quietly, and Toteme's leather coats keep out wind and light rain. Shows versus presentations: how to dress for each
Paris's official calendar includes both fashion shows and presentations, the FHCM notes, and the two formats ask different things of an outfit.
At a show, you sit, often shoulder to shoulder on a bench, for a runway that is over quickly. Your coat ends up on your lap and your bag at your feet or on your knees, so a coat you can fold and a bag small enough for a narrow row make life easier. What people see is you seated: the front of your outfit, your shoes and whatever is on your face. A wide-brimmed hat blocks the view of everyone behind you, so leave it for the street.
At a presentation, you stand and move through a room, usually over a longer window of time, often with a drink in hand. Wear shoes you can stand in, keep your hands free with a shoulder bag, and choose a layer you can open rather than take off.
Three formulas:
- For a show: a slim black blazer, a fine turtleneck, straight trousers, patent loafers and a shoulder bag, with sunglasses in hand.
- For a presentation: a knit dress, flat knee boots and a leather coat worn open, with a tote on the shoulder.
- For a day of both: a brown double-breasted blazer with matching trousers and a cream knit, which works seated, standing and at dinner.
Loewe cuts its double-breasted blazers roomy, Saint Laurent's run long and sharp, and Alexander McQueen's are narrow, with strong shoulders. Browse all blazers.

NYFW outfits for February in New York
New York in February is the coldest stop of the season. NOAA's 1991–2020 climate normals for Central Park put February's average high at about 42°F and its average low at about 30°F, with about 10 inches of snowfall in a normal February. Plan on walking between venues through slush, then sitting in rooms warm enough to make a coat unbearable.
- Boots first. Knee boots or ankle boots with rubber soles; lug soles grip best in snow and slush. Slush and road salt mark suede, so keep suede for dry days and treat leather before the week starts.
- A coat that covers the knee. A long coat over a skirt or dress keeps you warm on a street corner; a cropped jacket does not.
- Accessories you can pocket. Leather gloves, a cashmere scarf and a hat that comes off without ruining your hair for the next photograph.
Three NYFW formulas:
- Lug-sole knee boots, a long leather coat, a chunky knit and leather gloves.
- A double-breasted brown wool coat over a gray suit, with flat knee boots.
- Lace-up leather boots on lug soles, wide-leg jeans, a camel wrap coat and a cashmere scarf.
Lug-sole leather knee boots from Jimmy Choo and Proenza Schouler, and Tod's lace-up leather boots, are built for exactly this weather. Loafers on thick rubber soles, such as Maison Margiela's split-toe pair, cover the drier days, and suede loafers wait for a dry forecast. London, Milan and Paris: fashion week outfits for the rest of the season
The British Fashion Council sets London's dates and publishes its schedule. Milan and Paris are fixed: Milan's last day, March 1, is Paris's first, so anyone covering both goes straight from one to the other, and a trip that starts in Milan on February 23 and ends in Paris on March 9 means packing for more than two weeks. Plan the shoes around the streets: Milan's cobbles and tram tracks and the cobbled side streets of Paris catch a thin heel, so pack block heels and lug soles rather than stilettos.
Pack a capsule around two coats rather than a suitcase of outfits:
- Coats: one neutral (camel, brown or charcoal) and one statement (a color, a leather coat or an unusual shape).
- Tailoring and knits: two blazers, four fine knits and three pairs of trousers in colors that all work together.
- Dresses: one knit or wool dress for daytime and one for dinners.
- Shoes: loafers, flat or low boots and one pair for the evening.
- Bags: one tote for the day and one small bag for dinner.
- Extras: sunglasses, leather gloves, a cashmere scarf and a compact umbrella.
The late-evening dinners and events that follow the shows are where the second bag and the evening shoes come in. For the rest of the trip, see our guide to what to wear in Paris in winter.
Fashion week street style: how to be photographed without looking in costume
Street style is the scene outside the venues, and the outfits that photograph best look like the wearer's own clothes, worn with conviction. The ones that miss look borrowed: a full runway look head to toe, or five statements fighting each other.
- One strong element. A burgundy coat with everything else black. An oversized blazer with jeans. A tote in an unexpected color.
- Proportion over pieces. A long coat over a short skirt, a big blazer over slim trousers, a wide trouser with a small bag. Contrast in shape reads from across the street.
- One color, head to toe. Brown from coat to boots, or gray from blazer to trousers, looks deliberate in photographs and is easy to pack.
- Sunglasses. The simplest finishing piece, and practical on a bright winter morning. A strong shape, such as an oversized round frame, a cat-eye or a shield, does more than a small one.
Fashion week is among the events clients name when they ask Vêtir's AI stylist what to wear. Ask our AI stylist with your schedule and the forecast, and it will build a look for each day from pieces in stock. For frames, see our edit of designer sunglasses for women, or browse all sunglasses.

The fashion week bag: one tote for the whole day
Between the first show and dinner, your bag has to carry a phone, a battery pack and charger, sunglasses, gloves, a lip balm and anything you pick up along the way. A structured or soft leather tote with a strap long enough to wear over a coat does it; choose one with a zip or magnetic closure for crowded rooms. Put the tote on the floor under your seat at a show, or on your knees if the row is narrow, and keep a flat pouch inside for the small things so you are not digging for your phone.
The Row's plain leather totes are the quiet option, and Bottega Veneta's woven leather adds texture without a logo; a tote in a pale color is the easy way to give a dark outfit its one idea. Browse all tote bags, or see our edit of the best work bags.

How we chose
- Walkability: shoes with rubber or part-rubber soles, flat or low-heeled.
- Weather: wool, cashmere and leather coats long enough for a February street corner, and blazers that stand alone indoors.
- Street style: pieces with a strong color or shape in most groups, next to quieter classics.
- Photographs, not color names: outside a show the cameras see the real shade, so every piece was chosen from its product images; retailer color names are sometimes wrong.
- Houses and availability: the coats, blazers, boots, sunglasses and totes all come from top luxury houses on Vêtir, two pieces at most from any house per module, and every one was live with sizes in stock at our check.

Frequently asked questions
What should I wear to fashion week?
A real coat, shoes you can walk in all day, tailoring or knitwear that looks finished indoors and one bag that holds everything. Add one strong idea, such as a colored coat or a statement pair of sunglasses, and keep the rest simple.
When is New York Fashion Week in February 2027?
The CFDA's Fashion Calendar lists New York Fashion Week for February 8 to 12, 2027; the week takes place every February and September. London's dates are set by the British Fashion Council, Milan runs from February 23 to March 1, 2027, and Paris from March 1 to 9, 2027.
What do people wear to NYFW in February?
Long wool, cashmere or leather coats, knee boots or ankle boots with rubber soles, tailoring or knits underneath, leather gloves and a tote. February normals for Central Park run from about 30°F to 42°F, and a normal February brings about 10 inches of snow.
What is the difference between a fashion show and a presentation?
A show is a seated runway that is over quickly; a presentation is usually a standing event over a longer window, where guests walk through the room. Dress for a narrow row at a show and for standing at a presentation.
Should you wear the designer to their show?
One piece from the house is a courtesy, and a rival house's logo is best left at home. Avoid wearing a full runway look head to toe.
Can you wear sneakers to fashion week?
Yes, clean leather sneakers are fine with tailoring or a long coat, especially for a day of walking. In New York slush, boots with rubber soles are the better choice.
